As with version 20H2 last fall, Microsoft is delivering the few new features of 21H1 (see an overview here) in advance via a cumulative update. This time they were included in the May update for versions 2004 or 20H2. However, the new features remain inactive until the enablement package unlocks them.
This is delivered via WSUS and Windows Update for Business as KB5000736, and is also available in the Download and Volume Licensing Center. The official release also marks the start of the support period of 18 months, which Microsoft generally grants for all editions of the spring update.
The new features delivered in the May update are released as KB5000736
Users who are still running a version older than 2004 will need a conventional upgrade, which requires several reboots.
New GPO settings
Windows 10 21H1 doesn’t include any new features that would require additional group policies for their configuration. Nevertheless, the update brings ten new settings for components that have been in place for a while.
Most of them serve to drive the transition from legacy web browsers to Edge Chromium. Internet Explorer can now be deactivated as a standalone browser. IE then only serves as a rendering engine for Edge in Internet Explorer Mode. If a user tries to start IE, this group policy automatically redirects the page to load in Edge.
The Group Policy settings introduced with Windows 10 21H1
Two other settings control the behavior of IE when it is run as a component of Edge. You can now show the Save target as entry in the context menu of a link. The other option allows you to activate hot keys, such as CTRL+S.
The legacy browsers also include the first generation of Edge, which Microsoft is now replacing with the Chromium version during Windows 10 feature upgrades. Until this change has taken place, a dialog warns the user that the current browser is outdated. This message can be suppressed via another setting.
In addition, there is an option for Windows Update. It is used to deactivate the so-called safeguards. These prevent the installation of feature upgrades on computers that contain components known to cause problems with a particular version of the operating system.
Another setting allows you to switch off the news feed in the taskbar. The next one removes the icon for Meet Now, which is a feature for video conferencing on Skype.
The remaining settings control text recognition for TIFF files, which is a feature of Windows Search. They allow, for example, the selection of the language based on the code page or cause the OCR function to always capture all pages of a TIFF.
In the past, searchOCR.admx, which contains these settings, was a constant source of error messages; while the language files were available, the actual template for them was missing.
Detailed information about all settings can be found in the Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet. It also explicitly marks new options.
ADMX download
The templates with all current settings for the group policies are, as usual, part of the operating system and can be found under% SystemRoot%PolicyDefinitions. In addition, the complete templates can now be downloaded from Microsoft’s Download Center.
As usual, this package comes with 22 language files, whereas on a workstation, only en-US or the language of the localized Windows is available. The ADMX download primarily benefits users who use Windows 10 in multiple language versions.
The administrative templates must be unpacked with elevated rights
In addition, there are ADMXs that are not relevant to local group policies and are therefore not part of the operating system. This includes GroupPolicyPreferences.admx for the configuration of Group Policy Preferences, which are available only in domains. Overall, the download is particularly recommended if you want to keep the templates in a central store.
Security Baseline, ADK, and RSAT
The Security Baseline is another tool that Microsoft provides with the release of Windows 10 21H1. It contains the manufacturer’s recommended settings to harden the system. The update does not add any new settings or remove existing ones.
The baseline was refreshed primarily to bring the documentation up to date with the new GPO settings. It can be downloaded as part of the Microsoft Security Compliance Toolkit. This also includes the baselines for Edge and the Microsoft 365 applications.
The Security Compliance Toolkit contains the baselines for Windows 10 21H1 Edge und Microsoft 365
The same applies to the Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). Since 21H1 shares the kernel and system files with the predecessors, there is no need for an update here. This is also true for WinPE, which has been a separate download since Windows 10 1809. Thus, you can continue to use the existing deployment tools.
21H1 does not bring any changes to the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT). Since version 1809, it has not been necessary to download these tools separately, but the RSAT are installed as an optional feature.

Conclusion
The small number of innovations in Windows 10 21H1 is reflected in the tools for the administration and deployment of the system. Only the group policies bring some additional settings; otherwise, the toolbox remains largely unchanged.

In this article, we will be seeing how to install or update Group Policy Administrative Templates (ADMX) in Windows 11/10. It is a simple procedure that will help you to cope up with the constant upgrading that the Windows OS is subjected to.
What are Group Policy Administrative Templates?
To centralize users for better management in the Active Directory environment we use Group Policy Administrative Templates.
At first, these files were used with an extension, .adm as they were text-markup files. But after the introduction of Windows Vista and Server 2003, XML-based Administrative Templates were introduced with .adml or .admx extension.

Before installing the templates, we need to download them. You can download GPO Administrative Templates from microsoft.com
Once you have downloaded the suitable file, go to the following locations.
C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Group PolicyWindows 10 May 2021 Update (21H1)PolicyDefinitions
Copy the content and paste it into the GPO Central Store on your domain controller.
There are few points that you should be aware of while doing the copy-paste action.
- It is recommended to backup the PolicyDefinitions directory before replacing the files. So, you will be able to downgrade to the previous Administrative Template.
- There is no need for you to copy the adml file for all the languages. Just move those languages that your GPO editor is currently using.
- If your system is running Windows 10, there is no need for you to install the MSI file, just copy the administrative templates from “%WinDir%PolicyDefinitions”
Next, create a new GPO in Group Policy Management Console and make sure it has the policy configuration from the latest Windows 11/10 build.
How to create a new GPO in Group Policy Management Console
To create a new GPO:
- Open the Group Policy Management console.
- Expand Forest > YourForestName > Expand Domains > Expand YourDomainName
- Click Group Policy Objects > Click Action > Click New.
- Type the name for your new GPO.
- Finally, click the new GPO in the Navigation pane
- In the details pane, click the Details tab and change the GPO Status to User configuration settings disabled.
You can now deploy the new GPO template in your clients and you will be good to go.
Similarly, you can install new administrative templates.

ADMX
(и
ADML
Active Directory
Windows 10 2004 (20H2): Computer Configuration -> Policies -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Delivery Optimization.
к. в консоли редактора GPO (
gpmc.msc
- Перейдите на страницу загрузки административных шаблонов для максимального билда Windows 10, которые используется у вас в домене. В нашем случае это Windows 10 2004. Проще всего выполнить поиск в google по ключевой фразе “Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows 10 2004”;
Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows 10 May 2020 Update.msi
); - Теперь нужно скопировать содержимое каталога C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Group PolicyWindows 10 May 2020 Update (2004)PolicyDefinitions в центральное хранилище GPO на контроллере домена (каталог \winitpro.ruSYSVOLwinitpro.ruPoliciesPolicyDefinitions) с заменой (!)
- Обязательно создайте резервную копию каталога PolicyDefinitions на контроллере домена перед заменой файлов (это позволит откатится к предыдущим версии admx шаблонов);
- Не обязательно копировать каталоги с adml файлами для разных языков. Скопируйте только каталоги для тех языков, которые используются у вас в редакторе GPO. Это уменьшит размер каталога SYSVOL на DC и уменьшить трафик репликации;
%WinDir%PolicyDefinitions
- Теперь запустите редактор Group Policy Management Console (gpmc.msc), создайте новую GPO и проверьте, что в ней теперь доступны настройки политик из нового билда Windows 10;
Active Directory
- Перейдите нас страницу Microsoft Edge for business (https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/business/download);
- Выберите версию, билд и платформу Edge, которую вы хотите использовать. Нажмите кнопку Get Policy Files;
MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplates.cab
MicrosoftEdgePolicyTemplateswindowsadmx
Active Directory group policies, also called Group Policy Object (GPO), are one of my core topics. I have a lot to do with this in various projects and as a Microsoft trainer. As a result, I have accumulated a number of templates and links. This link collection should make your search a little easier. Only templates of the respective manufacturers or projects are listed here. I have deliberately avoided third-party guidelines.
Do you know a template that is missing? Please write me a comment or a mail with the link. I will update this list.
Notes on the changes to group policies
Before making changes to the GPOs, it is essential to make a backup. If you don’t always want to back up the entire domain controller, or if you use special software such as the AGMT or corresponding data backup solutions, I can help you. In the article “Backing up and documenting group policies correctly“, I present a suitable PowerShell script of mine, with a download link in the Microsoft TechNet Gallery. The GPO Central Store should also be backed up, which the script can also do.

Adobe
For the Acrobat series, Adobe has extensive documentation on the subject of group policies and corporate functions. This is in English. As of 2015/2016, recently released Security Updates or Cumulative Updates, for Windows and/or Internet Explorer, are shipping updated ADMX/ADML files e.g. inetres.admx/adml for IE.
So, if you can’t find the setting you’re looking for in the downloads section, you might need to grab the latest CU for Windows or IE to get the freshest ADMX/ADML. This concept also seems to apply to Win10 upgrades (e.g. 1507 -> 1511 -> 1607)… |

Nice Wiki. Helpful !
Microsoft has released a new version of Windows 10, dubbed version 21H1. This version brings new functionality that many organizations are eager to utilize. In many organizations, Windows-based devices are joined to Active Directory Domain Services (AD DS), so devices can be managed centrally and end-users can sign-in on any domain-joined device of their liking.
A new Windows version means that Active Directory needs to be properly prepared. In this blogpost, I’ll show you how to prepare Active Directory for Windows 10, version 21H1:
Group Policy
Windows 10, version 21H1 comes with ten new Group Policy settings. To centrally manage Group Policy, you can update the Group Policy Central Store with the new Group Policy template (*.admx) and Group Policy language (*.adml) files. This way, you can centrally manage the versioning of Group Policy templates.
Note:
If your organization doesn’t use the Group Policy Central Store feature, yet, now is a good time to implement it.
You can download the Download Administrative Templates (.admx) for Windows 10 May 2021 Update (21H1) from the Microsoft Download Center. This download includes *.adml files for the Czech, Danish, German, Greek, English, Spanish, Finnish, French, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Swedish, Turkish and Chinese languages.
Copy the new PolicyDefinitions folder over the existing PolicyDefinitions folder in the Active Directory System Volume (SYSVOL) share to update the Group Policy Central Store.
When you’re a fan of Microsoft’s security baselines, you can download and implement the Security baseline (final) for Windows 10, version 21H1.
Windows Activation
Active Directory-based Activation (ADbA) is available since Windows Server 2012 as a replacement for Microsoft’s Key Management Services (KMS).
Note:
If your organization doesn’t use Active Directory-based Activation, yet, now is a good time to implement it.
You can download the product keys for your organization from the Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC). Enter the product keys to automatically activate Windows 10 when it comes into scope of your Windows activation method.
Remote Server Administration Tools
In previous Windows 10 version, the Remote Server Administration Tools (RSAT) needed to be downloaded manually to allow admins to manage Windows Server features from these devices. However, since Windows 10, version 1809, the RSAT are included as Features on Demand in Windows 10 itself.
Do not download an RSAT package from this page. Instead, perform the following steps on a device running Windows 10, version 21H1:
- Press the Start button.
- Search for Manage optional features.
Click the search result with the same name - Click Add a feature.
You now see the list of available optional features. - Select and install the specific RSAT tools you need. All RSAT tools names are prefixed with RSAT: , so this makes for easy filtering.

gpedit.msc
Windows».
mmc
Policy Plus.
ADMX files downloaded successfully. Open them now?».
regedit
