Was in the mood for something old (1997), something
stolen
borrowed (abandonware site) and something blue (screwed up color palette), so I settled on Beasts & Bumpkins because it looks charming, simple and fun and I need to scratch a recent itch I have for a «city builder» type game but how the heck do you get it to play on Windows 10 nicely? I used the old Windows 95 compatibility setup trick to get it installed and running but I strongly suspect the color palette is wonky — my lil computer guys/village idiots are literally blue. Tolerable but the worst thing is the unacceptable mouse lag. Anyone here ever play this under Windows 10 and get it lag-free or do I ask too much, for the sun, the blue moon, and the stars, and should I stop living in the past?

Interesting enough, I recently had Dark Forces 2 & its expansion, along with Age of Pirates 2, running well under Windows 10 with the voodoo wrapper but, alas, Beasts & Bumpkins still hates Windows 10 no matter what I try. Guess I’ll just have to throw in the towel. Thx anyway.

I would borrow VMware and have a win95 machine sitting on the desktop for when these unseemly urges bubble up. I’ve spent the last few days in just such a hole.

I had a similar problem with a game recently that DxWnd fixed. It doesn’t seem like there are presets for the game but it might not need too much fiddling with settings. Here’s a link if you’re interested in trying it. I’ve noticed I have to run DxWnd as administrator to get it to launch programs in case you come across that problem.

It was worth a try and it even gave me the best results but the mouse is still too choppy for my taste. Sometimes it’s too high of a mouse’s USB polling rate that causes issues (DOSBox used to make the mouse cursor jumpy until I would lower the polling rate from 1000 Hz to normal values like 125 Hz) and I even tried lowering it but… no joy.

I never got this game to run properly. On different kinds of OS too. Always had issues of some sort.
My last attempt was years ago, and it had me editing the Windows registry. It ran but not without frame rate and scrolling issues.
Though I love this game, I gave up on trying to get it to work. I’ve been wanting to replay this for years, and even got the original CD. It must be more than 15 to 20 years since I last played it 
There is a Let’s Play on Youtube so I assume it’s possible to get it to work.
He says he has instructions on how to get it to work.
Installation instructions:
1. Download the ISO file from here: http://www.theisozone.com/downloads/p…
2. Download PowerISO here: http://www.poweriso.com/download.php
3. Download DXWND from https://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/
4. Mount Beasts and Bumpkins ISO file to virtual cd drive using PowerISO.
5. Explore the ISO in a window and find Setup.exe. Right click on it and change compatibility mode to windows 95 or 98. Run this file with administration permission and install the game to your hard drive
6. Open DXWND. Click the Edit tab and select ADD. Name it whatever you want. In the Path section you have to select the Beasts.exe file wherever you installed it. In the directx tab make sure to select Directx1-6. Limit resolution to 640×480. 7. Run hooked. If it doesn’t work you may need to fiddle with the settings as not all computers will run this game the same.

Not sure what hooked means but I followed everything else in those instructions and it still runs like shit through a crazy straw under Windows 10. There’s a LOT of options in that DXwind proggie so maybe heavy fiddling & experimenting with ’em might make something playable. But I’m already petered out trying to get Crysis running at more than 25 FPS in fullscreen today (who woulda known that there’s a refresh rate bug that forces you to create a custom resolution of 1919×1080 in Nvida CP instead of 1920×1080 to get it to work right? How could I be so dumb? I mean it’s perfectly obvious that this is what needs to be done. Right? *smirk*) so maybe some kind autistic soul here can find the solution to B&B using DXWind and post their results.

Too bad it didn’t work. But like I said, I have tried multiple times over the years. I’m done 
Fun as the game is though.. It isn’t worth the vast effort, and there are plenty of other games to play.

I had this same itch lately and persevered for a couple hours and got it to work on windows 10, give this a try:
1. get the iso
2. mount the iso (I used winCDEmu, but any other im sure is good)
3. as in above guide: find Setup.exe. Right click on it and change compatibility mode to windows 95. Run this file with administration permission and install the game to your hard drive
4*. I found an old star trek game website armadafleetcommand.com which is has a pre-setup DXWnd for all their mods and games here:

i. Download the FULLSCREEN setting version
ii. Open it up and select the top entry in the list (Birth of the Federation) and go edit > modify
iii. change the path to point to your beasts.exe location where you installed it, clear the launch path, change the Name (optional)
iv. as in above guide, go to DirectX tab and set DirectX Version Hook to DirectX1~6, and tick both the AERO handling check boxes in that same tab, I left everything else as is.
That worked for me, running fullscreen and smooth with good colours on windows 10, dont forget cd/iso needs to be mounted for game to work.

*following the original dxwnd advice didnt work for me, either it was laggy, or it ran smooth but the color palette was messed up (green and blues where they shouldnt be in brighter ranges), i was messing with settings until I realised its better to see if someone had figured some optimal settings for other old 90s games, i got lucky it worked first try with that star trek games site, hope it works out for you, I never completed b&b when I was a kid so I’m pretty excited to play it again now in my old age.

Beasts and Bumpkins is a great Settlers-style gem that is one of the very few games from software giant Electronic Arts that were released very quietly without any marketing hype, and only in Europe.
And that’s a shame, because in contrast to many hyped-but-horrible games EA put out, BNB is entertaining and very charming. Tim Chown’s Games Domain’s strategy editor, says it all in his review about what makes the game well worth a look, although by no means a classic: «…What I found was a game that indeed wasn’t worthy of a full price sale, but one with a lot of new game ideas and reasonable value as a bargain bin buy. Or it is if the Settlers style of «cute» game is your thing. The cuteness factor probably comes from the apparent European influence on the game, which is credited as «Demons et Manants» in the title screen, hinting at a French connection.
The game itself has the same village building nature as Settlers, but it’s presented in something of a simpler way. Putting aside the perils of the game world, your prime goal is to expand your population, providing food, water and anything else needed to keep your subjects happy.
The innovative slant on Beasts and Bumpkins is that your population must grow by «natural» means — you don’t build or buy new villagers, you need a frisky man and woman to nip off into a hut for a bit of nookie to get a baby, which then may grow into a boy or girl, assuming the wolves don’t get it first. If you want a soldier you have to send a young man to a guard tower and train him for cash (which you raise by charging for water and food). If you later want a villager back, you can demob the footman back to farm duty. The game clock runs continuously — you can’t pause to give orders — and time is split into four seasons which in turn are split by night-time phases. It takes a few seasons for babies to grow to adults, and an adult may live for four or five game years, depending on food and water supply. As long as you provide food, housing, water, and you don’t get attacked, you should expand nicely by surviving on wheat, bread, cattle and milk. Wheat is planted in spring and harvested in the autumn, cows can be lured into fenced fields where they can be milked.
The «Sim Village» part of the game isn’t too complex, is quite well implemented, but is perhaps too repetitive in each mission. For those who like charts and graphs, there’s a good selection of stats you can view to track such things as population growth, birth rate, and so on. That repetition is broken up by the tasks you’re given in each mission. I haven’t completed all the missions, of which there are reportedly 30, but what I’ve played to date has reasonable variety. Like Warcraft, the first few outings are merely tasters, asking you to grow your village to a certain population or to raise a certain amount of cash. From there, extras are added like retrieving artifacts, destroying an evil shrine, conquering enemy villages.
Missions have implicit sub-plots — in mission 6 you need to navigate through fields filled with traps, but to do that you really need to find the «reveal trap» scroll to add that spell to your wizard’s repertoire. New game elements are added as the missions progress, so the game complexity (what there is of it) is ushered onto you gently. Hints and tips are delivered tutorial-style via letters which you can read. The control system is a little clumsy — while you can scroll the map easily enough bring up the building menu bar can be a little hit and miss, and it often gets in the way of your scrolling. One useful hotkey takes you back to your village center.
Beasts and Bumpkins is a game that understandably got overshadowed by Total Annihilation and Dark Reign when it came out last autumn (1997), and technically it’s also well behind the likes of Warwind II. However, it does have that certain cuteness that attracted a lot of followers to Settlers, and the simpler style of play may well prove more enjoyable to many gamers. I wouldn’t recommend Beasts and Bumpkins at full price — there’s a lot better to be had — but at £7.99 it’s a fun little purchase to help see away the days until the big name games start rolling out this summer.»

Perhaps one of the strangest games to have been published by EA, Beasts and Bumpkins is a real-time strategy game with a solid mechanics and a humorous twist. Inspired by games like Age of Empires, Beast and Bumpkins has just about everything an RTS gamer comes to expect, with the added bonus of a lot of laughs akin to something you might experience in a Fable game. That being said, with some complicated time-based systems that have your villagers growing from infancy to retirement—is this cult-classic worth a look for modern audiences?
The Sims – Old English Village Edition
Beasts and Bumpkins has all the markings of a solid RTS game. With an isometric viewpoint you are charged with overseeing an entire village and ensuring its survival.
Over the course of the thirty levels, you will have various ancillary tasks to complete like collecting a certain item or razing a certain opposing village—but the crux of the game comes from the RTS mechanics. A majority of your time will be spent managing the economy and life of your local village.
In addition to livestock and protection, you will have to handle population and the aging of your villagers from infancy all the way through adulthood and on to retirement (making it very similar to The Sims, but with more characters to take care of). When characters retire, as a fun little mechanic, you have to make sure they are taken care of as some retirees can contract a ‘plague’, spread it as they lull about, and run amok for your entire village. All that being said, while the graphics have aged, and especially the sound effects (more on that later)—the RTS mechanics of the game hold up very well.
A Few Beasts, and a lot of Bumpkins
One of the first things you notice about Beasts and Bumpkins comes from the one-liners. When you play an RTS you expect a certain amount of seriousness as Age of Empires, Rome: Total War or Command & Conquer have sort of embedded that tone into their DNA. However, Beasts and Bumpkins wears its humor like a badge of honor in both its sound effects and the commentary from the villagers.
For example, in order to add more villagers, obviously some of them will have to reproduce—in those moments a man might yell out ‘fancy some nookies?’ while a woman responds ‘Oo, I’d like that!’ in these ridiculously hilarious old-English accents—one of the main reasons Fable comes to mind, though the entire scene is reminiscent of Fallout Shelter as well.
A True Cult-Classic
While the age of Beast and Bumpkins shows—the mechanics that make for a good RTS are all there. Not to mention, the interface is easy to understand and doesn’t overwhelm itself with too many things to manage.

While the game is long, often getting quite difficult in later levels, and the sound effects, while funny, tend to be overused—the game is still worth a few laughs and a few good RTS hours of play.

On its first release, this game was seen less as a C&C beater than as a mildly amusing diversion. Which is exactly what it still is. Added to the real-time stew is a fantasy Carry On-style world replete with busty young maidens and wolf whistles. The humour won’t be to everyone’s taste; in fact, if Carry On leaves you cold then you can stop reading right now.
Instead of progressing through an eternity of building and fighting, you have to worry about the coming seasons, and both harvesting your crops and sowing your human seed. Young farmers grow old and become a burden, and small children need nurturing before they can pull their weight. This element may sound complex, but it’s all done with the minimum of fuss, thanks to a very workable interface and a gradually unfolding mission structure.
Where the game may lose another flock of fans is due to its light-handed combat. You won’t see any large-scale wars, rather small skirmishes between a few soldiers and man-eating wasps.
Beasts & Bumpkins does include a little exploration to make up for it, but if you want massive pitched battles you might be better off opting for WarCraft 2.

Beasts and Bumpkins Overview
Beasts and Bumpkins Free Download for PC is a single player real-time strategy video game. It was developed by Worldweaver Ltd and published by Electronic Arts in 1997 and is available for the Windows platform.
In the game’s storyline, the player was exiled by the king. They begin with limited resources and a few peasants to control. After building an empire and increasing their resources, the player can challenge Dark Lord Sabellian, who attacks the surrounding area.
Gameplay
The game is a standard isometric ‘god’ style game. The player’s goal is to complete one or more specific tasks on each level. This can be to collect a certain item, to kill a certain enemy or village, earn a certain amount of gold or survive for a specific duration of time.
