About GitHub Desktop installation
You can install GitHub Desktop on supported operating systems, which currently include macOS 10.12 or later and Windows 7 64-bit or later. If you have an account on GitHub or GitHub Enterprise, you can connect your account to GitHub Desktop. For more information about creating an account, see «Signing up for a new GitHub account» or contact your GitHub Enterprise site administrator.
If you are a network administrator, you can deploy GitHub Desktop to computers running Windows on an Active Directory-managed network by using the Windows Installer package file (.msi) with Group Policy or another remote installation system.
The Windows Installer package extracts the standalone installer (.exe) and configures Windows to install GitHub Desktop the next time a user signs in to their workstation. Users must have permissions to install GitHub Desktop in their user directory.
If a user runs the Windows Installer package for GitHub Desktop directly, to complete the installation, the user must sign out of their workstation and then sign back in.
Downloading and installing GitHub Desktop
You can install GitHub Desktop on macOS 10.12 or later.

- Click Download for macOS.
- In your computer’s
Downloadsfolder, double-click the GitHub Desktop zip file.
- After the file has been unzipped, double-click GitHub Desktop.
- GitHub Desktop will launch after installation is complete.
You can install GitHub Desktop on Windows 7 64-bit or later.
Warning: You must have a 64-bit operating system to run GitHub Desktop.

Freeware

Open Source
Open Source software is software with source code that anyone can inspect, modify or enhance. Programs released under this license can be used at no cost for both personal and commercial purposes. There are many different open source licenses but they all must comply with the Open Source Definition — in brief: the software can be freely used, modified and shared.
Free to Play
This license is commonly used for video games and it allows users to download and play the game for free. Basically, a product is offered Free to Play (Freemium) and the user can decide if he wants to pay the money (Premium) for additional features, services, virtual or physical goods that expand the functionality of the game. In some cases, ads may be show to the users.
Demo
Demo programs have a limited functionality for free, but charge for an advanced set of features or for the removal of advertisements from the program’s interfaces. In some cases, all the functionality is disabled until the license is purchased. Demos are usually not time-limited (like Trial software) but the functionality is limited.
Trial
Trial software allows the user to evaluate the software for a limited amount of time. After that trial period (usually 15 to 90 days) the user can decide whether to buy the software or not. Even though, most trial software products are only time-limited some also have feature limitations.
Paid
Usually commercial software or games are produced for sale or to serve a commercial purpose.

GitHub Desktop is a program for convenient work with projects placed on the same service. It can be used to add any repositories directly to your hard drive, by dragging and dropping, or through the conductor. If the drag-and-drop folder is a Git repository, GitHub imports the entire history and connects it to the user’s profile. Another way to add repositories is to clone it from GitHub.com. It can be performed directly from the interface of the program, using the viewing of your personal profile or organization to which you belong. Also, cloning is performed by pressing the corresponding button «Clone in Windows» on the page GitHub.com.
The application is a full-featured version of msysGit — no additional installation is required. PowerShell is also supported. The program includes special utilities to make it easier to work with the command line. When cloning repositories, HTTPS protocol is used and credentials are cached, which eliminates the need for constant use of SSH keys each time a remote action is performed.

Program allows people to work on projects placed on same server. It’s nice that you just have to download this program and it makes it simple by clicking and dragging files. No other need of downloads keeps it simple and concise.It has special utilities so typing commands is quick and easy.

GitHub has made multitasking and coding a lot simpler and has increased the reliability and efficiency of my work. There have been times my PC has frozen (due for a new one), but GitHub had backed up the code I was working on. Additionally, working with my team has been very productive, making changes to 15 things but treated as one action are big pluses. It really simplifies a lot of the work. Love it.

GitHub Desktop is an easy to use program that offers an intuitive user interface. It allows me to quickly and easily manage my code repositories with a few clicks. The program also offers a wide range of features like the ability to commit, push and pull changes, create branches and view history. I appreciate the ability to quickly review changes in a file before committing them. The interface is also quite intuitive, allowing me to quickly start working. The only downside I’ve noticed is that it can take some time to load a repository when initially setting up. However, once it’s loaded it’s quite responsive. Overall, GitHub Desktop is a great tool for managing my projects.

Start a project
You’ll find all the projects you’re working on listed in the sidebar. If you’re starting a new project, use the repository drop down menu to create a new repository or clone an existing one directly from GitHub.com.
Branch off
Branches are essential to proposing changes and reviewing code on GitHub—and they’re always available in the top left corner of the repository view. Just select the current branch to switch branches or create a new one.
Craft the perfect commit
View a diff of your uncommitted changes, and form the perfect commit by selecting the files—or even the specific lines—that make up a change. Enter the summary and description, then commit.

Visualize your changes and commits in the comparison graph. You can select commits on the graph to navigate through the history of your local branches.
Create a pull request

Merge and deploy
Browse commits on local and remote branches to quickly and clearly see what changes still need to be merged. You can also merge your code to the master branch for deployment right from the app.
