Here are a few tips you should know before you get started:

Both the Microsoft and Xbox cards work just the same. Once redeemed to your Microsoft account, you can spend your balance at Microsoft Store online, on Windows, and on Xbox. You can get the latest apps, games, movies, TV shows, and Surface, Xbox, and accessories.

Gift cards do not currently work at physical Microsoft Stores.

You currently cannot buy Microsoft 365 with a gift card.

How to redeem a gift card or code online

The easiest way to redeem a gift card or code is online. Sign in to redeem.microsoft.com with your Microsoft account, enter the 25-character code, and then select Next.

If you or your family have multiple Microsoft accounts, make sure you’re signed in to the one to which you want to apply the gift card or code. Money can’t be transferred from one Microsoft account to another and can’t be converted from one currency to another. For more info, see Limits on the money in your Microsoft account.

Try signing in to your Microsoft account using an InPrivate browser session to clear all other Microsoft account info from the cache. See Browse InPrivate in Microsoft Edge for more info.

Here’s how to redeem a gift card or code from Microsoft Store on a Windows 10 device:

On your Windows 10 device, select Microsoft Store on the taskbar.

In Microsoft Store, select the See more menu (located next to the Search box on the upper right side of the page).

Select Redeem a code. If you aren’t already signed in, sign in to the Microsoft account on which you want to redeem the code.

Enter the 25-character code, and then select Redeem. Don’t worry about hyphens, the system takes care of those for you.

How can I tell if my card or code was redeemed?

To see if your card or code was redeemed, check your order history. On the Order history page, look for the date that you redeemed the card or code, and you’ll see the order number and how the card or code was used. If you see Redeemed code under Payment method, the card or code was successfully redeemed.

What happens after I redeem my gift card or code?

If the card or code has money on it, we’ll apply the entire balance to your Microsoft account. You can use it to buy things from Microsoft Store online, on Windows 10, and on Xbox One.

If the card or code is for a specific app or game, we’ll add it to your personal library, where you can download and install it. Go to My Library in Microsoft Store. When some apps or games are redeemed, they will take you to the product page where you can also download and install.

If the card or code is for a subscription, you can find it in your Services & subscriptions.

Troubleshooting

If you’re having trouble redeeming a gift card or code, select one of the following troubleshooting scenarios that best fits your issue, and it will expand to display more info:

Once a code has been redeemed, it can’t be redeemed again.

Check your order history to see if it was already redeemed on your account.

If you have more than one Microsoft account, you might have redeemed it on the other one. Try signing in with your other Microsoft account and try redeeming again, or checking your order history.

Check that you entered the code correctly. If the code was damaged, scratched, or warped in some way you may not be seeing the correct characters. Codes shouldn’t contain the following characters: A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1, 5.

If it’s a physical code, try returning it to the place you purchased it from and explaining that it couldn’t be redeemed.

If it’s a digital code, contact the person who sent it to you and explain that the code couldn’t be redeemed. If this code was a gift from another player, ask them to sign in to their Order history and select Cancel item.

There are a couple of places you can look for your content after redeeming a code.

If this is a Windows 10 game or app, launch the Microsoft Store app on your device and then select > My Library > All owned.

If the code is for content you already own, there are a couple of places you go to install your content.

If this is a Windows 10 game or app, launch the Microsoft Store app on your device and then select > My Library > All owned.

You can give the code to a friend since you no longer need to redeem it.

You might not be able to redeem a code to your account if you have a pending balance due on a subscription.

If the code hasn’t been activated, return it to the place where it was purchased and ask for them to activate it so it can be redeemed. Make sure to take your proof of purchase with you.

The code was purchased for use in a different country or region than the one your account is set to, so you won’t be able to redeem it.

If you purchased this code, try contacting the retailer you purchased it from for assistance.

If this was a gift from someone, and the person who sent it to you doesn’t live in the same country or region as you, ask them to sign in to their Order history and select Cancel item. Once they do that, they can resend the code using the country or region that matches the one on your account.

Some subscriptions limit the amount of time you can add using a code. If this happens, you’ll need to wait before you can redeem the code.

You can check how much time is left on your subscription at account.microsoft.com/services.

If the code was purchased from another company, such as Amazon.com, Best Buy, or EA, contact them directly to redeem the code.

Gift cards can be redeemed to personal Microsoft accounts, not business or corporate accounts. If you don’t have a personal account, visit the Microsoft account page to sign up.

Gift cards can’t be used to shop at Microsoft Store retail locations.

You can’t use a gift card to purchase Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

You can’t use Microsoft or Xbox gift cards to purchase content from the Xbox 360 Marketplace or Xbox 360 content on the Xbox One.

A gift card can only be redeemed in the currency printed on the card, or described on the web site. Example: a gift card in U.S. dollars can’t be used to buy an app priced in Euros.

The gift card or code may have additional instructions, and may be subject to additional terms and conditions.

You can’t find content after redeeming a code

After the redemption of Codes or Gift Cards, there are a couple of places to check the content you got. On Windows 10, open Microsoft Store and click the three-dot icon from the far right of the menu bar and choose My Library => All owned.

If you see a message that says the code is for content you already own, visit the library of Windows store and install the product you own. Same goes for the Xbox one as well.

You have a pending balance on a subscription

You won’t be able to redeem codes or Gift Cards if there is already a pending balance due for any previous subscription. Therefore, pay for the past-due to eradicate the issue.

The code hasn’t been activated

To settle upon the issue, go to the place from where it was purchased and tell them to activate the card so that you can redeem it. Before moving into the store, make sure to take the proof of purchase.

The code doesn’t match your country or region

Your Microsoft account may fail in the redemption of the gift cards if it was acquired for a different country or region. In such a case, contact the retailer for further assistance.

If the card was a gift from someone who does not belong to the same place as you, ask them to sign in their Microsoft account and visit Order history to cancel the item. After doing so, they can resend the code using the country or region that matches the one on your account.

The code is for a pre-paid subscription

There are some subscriptions that limit the amount of time you can add using a code. If this is the case, you will have to wait to redeem Codes or Gift Cards on Microsoft Account. To check how much time is left on your subscription, visit the official webpage of Services & subscriptions.

The code came from another online store

If the gift card was bought from another company for example – Amazon, Best buy or EA, get in touch with them directly.

Other limitations

There are some limitations to redeem a gift card. Such as –

1. First of all, always keep in mind that you can redeem codes or Gift Cards on your personal Microsoft Account only. Business and corporate accounts are not eligible to use the same.
2. These cards can not be used to shop at Microsoft Store retail locations.
3. You are not able to purchase Microsoft 365 subscriptions via redeeming codes or gift cards.
4. Buying content from the Xbox 360 Marketplace or Xbox 360 content on Xbox One is not authorized.
5. The card can only be used in the currency mentioned on the card itself or described on the web site.
6. There might be additional instructions or terms and conditions.

Microsoft Redeem Gift Cards are a great way to bring joy to your friends. As you get a card, you can either purchase a specific product it is tied to or spend the amount of gift money it contains on pretty much anything in the Microsoft Store.

You can use your gift cards in the online Microsoft Store or Windows 10 / XBOX applications. XBOX gift cards are the same thing as Microsoft Gift cards, and you can apply them in the same places. You can use gift cards to purchase software, subscriptions, and even in-game items. Exceptions are brick-and-mortar Microsoft Stores and some flagship products like Office 365. Gift cards won’t help here. And yet they are a real deal!

However, you may sometimes experience problems redeeming your gift card. Today we look through the three ways of using your gift card code, one for each place where you can employ your card. In this article, you can also read the list of possible troubles with redeeming your card.

Redeeming your card on the Microsoft Website

1. Go to the Microsoft website.
2. Sign in to your Microsoft account if you have to.



As you sign in to your Microsoft account, you will be offered to input your 25-character gift card code.

3. Input the 25-character code from your gift card and click Next.
4. Add the product to your account by pressing Confirm. Thus you will have redeemed your gift card.

Be extremely careful when using your gift card to buy anything outside the Microsoft Store. Microsoft sometimes allows that, but be accurate. Make sure that the account you log into is yours and confirm it right before purchasing the gift card.

Redeeming your card in Windows 10

1. Open Microsoft Store. Its icon is usually on the taskbar, or you can use the Start Menu search bar to find it.
2. Click the round icon of your Microsoft account at the upper right of the window.
3. In the drop-down menu, select Redeem code or gift cards.



Click the icon of your Microsoft account. In the drop-down menu, select Redeem code or gift cards.

4. Input the 25-character code from your gift card and press Next
5. Press Confirm to finish.

You can also check whether your gift card offers you any software product exclusively for Windows 10.

1. Click the Library icon in the lower part of the left Microsoft Store panel.



Check with the list of products in the MS Store Library to see whether your card gives you an exclusive Windows 10 product.

2. In the library, you will see all available Windows 10 products. Check with this list.

Redeeming your card on XBOX

Check the Internet connection of your XBOX and whether you are logged into your Microsoft Account.

Access Microsoft Store. It should be easy. The icon is at the bottom of the left pop-out panel. Moreover, there is a Store button on the upper pane. There is also a big square icon of the Store application somewhere on your main screen. You can as well hit the Right Button four times to access the Store.

In the Microsoft Store click the Use a code rectangle with a QR-code icon.

Continue with a familiar 25-character code entering procedure. Click Next.

The Store will show you what you are receiving with the current gift card. Press Confirm to finish.

You can check your Ready to install section of My games and apps option accessible via the main menu (the Xbox button) to see if your card only provides you with a particular Xbox product. You can choose the game or program you want to get and press Install.

If the card only gives you a subscription, you will see it in the Subscriptions. The path is:

Possible difficulties

You can experience some issues while attempting to redeem your gift card, and you can solve some of these troubles by addressing Microsoft. You can fix other problems via the shop where you have bought the card. Unfortunately, some issues are hard to solve. Therefore, it is better to be aware of them in advance.

Code already redeemed

Nothing special here. First of all, try to recall whether you redeemed the code already or not. Maybe you have more than one Microsoft account. If so, check them up: you might have already used your code from elsewhere. Also, be advised that you can only use a personal (not corporate account) to redeem your gift cards.

The code is damaged or illegible

The best thing to do here is to take the card to the shop where you bought it and explain the situation there. Of course, it is better to have the bill to prove your purchase.

Your code was not found

There is only one hint for this issue: try again and do it thoroughly. Characters A, E, I, O, U, L, S, 0, 1, 5 are not included in gift codes.

You redeemed the code successfully, but where’s the content?

You can check the All owned option within the Microsoft Store Library in Windows 10. Sometimes the Store will render the message that you own something that comes with your code, but you do not have it yet, because the product still needs to be installed. Visit the library to do it. The same problem can occur on Xbox.

An outstanding debt

If Microsoft is waiting for your payment, you will only be able to redeem your gift code when you rid yourself of the arrears.

Your code needs activation

It sometimes happens that the seller of the gift card forgets to activate it, which makes redemption impossible. Contact the shop where you bought the card and explain the situation.

The code doesn’t work where you live

Your Microsoft redeem gift code might be eligible for only a particular country or region. Moreover, you can only redeem your gift code into the currency indicated on your card or its description online. Better keep that in mind before you buy the gift card.

Your gift card is for a subscription you are using

This trouble is a little tricky, but in fact it is not a problem. If you have a gift card for a subscription that you have already prepaid, you may need to wait before the last payment expires – use your code then.
