Windows 10 supports themes which may include custom desktop backgrounds, sounds, mouse cursors, desktop icons, and an accent color. There are a number of methods you can use to change a theme in Windows 10. Let’s review them all.

In Windows 10, you can get extra themes using Windows Store or install them from a themepack file. Themes may include:

Desktop background: An image, a set of images, or a solid color which can be used as a wallpaper.
Colors. Windows 10 allows changing the color of the window frame, window borders, active elements and selected items.
Sounds. A set of sounds that are assigned to various events like notifications, message dialogs, window operations, emptying the Recycle Bin, and so on.
Screen Saver. Screen savers were created to save very old CRT displays from being damaged by issues like screen burn-in. These days, they are mostly used to personalize the PC with entertaining visuals or improve its security with additional password protection.
Pointers. By default, Windows 10 comes with no custom cursors bundled and uses the same cursors as Windows 8. Users who love customizing their OS may want to change them.
Desktop Icons. Themes can change icons like This PC, Recycle Bin, and so on.

Where Windows 10 stores themes

Windows 10 stores themes under different folders.

Themes that you’ve installed manually, saved, or synced from your Microsoft account are stored in the folder %LocalAppData%MicrosoftWindowsThemes.
Default themes are the ones that come pre-installed with Windows 10. They can be found in the folder C:WindowsResourcesThemes.
High Contrast Themes. — Themes that make items on your screen easier to see. They are part of the Ease of Access feature of Windows 10. They can be found in the folder C:WindowsResourcesEase of Access Themes.

The current theme can be found in the Registry. See the CurrentTheme string (REG_SZ) value under the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionThemes

To change the theme in Windows 10, do the following.

Open the Settings app.
Go to Personalization -> Themes.
On the right, click on a theme you like under Apply a theme.
The theme is now applied.

Alternatively, you can use the classic Control Panel applet to quickly apply a custom theme, or any of the default themes, or the High Contrast theme.

Press the Win + R keys on the keyboard.
Type or copy-paste the following command in the Run box: explorer.exe shell:::{ED834ED6-4B5A-4bfe-8F11-A626DCB6A921}.
This will open the classic Personalization applet. Click on the desired theme in the list to install it.

Apply a High Contrast theme using Settings

Open the Settings app.
Go to Ease of Access -> High Contrast.
On the right, set the option Turn on high contrast.
From the Choose a theme drop down list, choose one of the four pre-installed High Contrast themes.

Finally, you can apply a theme from a file manager app like File Explorer.

Change the Windows theme from File Explorer

Open File Explorer app.
Navigate to the folder which contains the *.theme file of the theme you want to apply. The default folders are mentioned in the beginning of this article. e.g., visit the folder C:WindowsResourcesThemes.
Double-click on the *.theme file to apply the theme. The theme will be applied. Also, Windows 10 will open the Themes page of the Settings app.

Winaero Theme Switcher is an application which allows you to change a Windows theme from the command line. It is primarily intended to be used with the command prompt or in a batch file where you want to automate the applying of a custom theme.

A theme is a collection of backgrounds and sounds, along with an accent color and mouse pointer style.^[1]^[2] Windows 10 allows you to set themes, and it’s much simpler and easier than previous editions. Start by reading step 1.

Right-click the desktop and select Personalize. Make sure you’re right-clicking an empty area of the desktop—clicking an icon will not produce the «Personalization» menu.

5 ways to change Theme in Windows

A theme file is a classic text file containing parameters, values and resources such as wallpapers are usually located in a subdirectory. Microsoft uses the Themepack and Deskthemepack archive (ZIP or CAB) package files that contain all the theme resources to simplify theme sharing and for their redistribution via the Microsoft Store. There are three types of themes stored in different locations in Windows 11/10 viz;

My Themes — manually created or saved, or downloaded and installed from a themepack file or Microsoft Store. These themes are saved in the %localappdata%MicrosoftWindowsThemes folder.
Windows Default Themes — pre-installed themes on your Windows OS. These themes are stored in the C:WindowsResourcesThemes folder.
High Contrast Themes — specially made for people with vision problems and are part of the Ease of Access feature. These themes can be found in the C:WindowsResourcesEase of Access Themes folder.

There are several ways to change the theme in Windows 11/10. We will discuss these methods as follows:

1] Change Theme via Desktop

The easiest method to change the theme in Windows 11/10 is via the desktop. To change the Theme via Desktop, do the following:

Right-click on an empty area on the Desktop.
Select Personalise from the context menu.
In the Personalisation window, under the Select a theme to apply section, simply click the theme you want.

2] Change Theme via File Explorer

To change Theme via File Explorer in Windows 11/10, do the following:

Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
Navigate to the folder below or any other folder containing the theme you want to apply

C:WindowsResourcesThemes

At the location, double-click the theme file for the theme you want.
Close the Settings app that automatically opens once you double-click the theme file.
Close File Explorer.

3] Change Theme via Command Prompt

To change Theme via Command Prompt in Windows 11/10, do the following:

Press Windows key + R to invoke the Run dialog.
In the Run dialog box, type cmd and hit Enter to open Command Prompt.
In the command prompt window, type or copy and paste the path below OR the full path to the theme file you want and hit Enter:

start "" "C:WindowsResourcesThemesaero.theme"

The theme will be applied and the Personalisation page in Settings app will automatically open. you can close the Settings app. If you want the theme to be applied without you having to interact with extra windows, run the modified command as follows:

start "" "C:WindowsResourcesThemesaero.theme" & timeout /t 3 & taskkill /im "systemsettings.exe" /f

When the command executes, it will apply the theme, wait for 3 seconds with the timeout command, and forcibly close the Settings app with the taskkill app.

4] Change Theme via PowerShell

To change Theme via PowerShell in Windows 11/10, do the following:

Press Windows key + X to open Power User Menu.
Tap I on the keyboard to launch PowerShell (Windows Terminal).
In the PowerShell console, type or copy and paste the path below OR the full path to the theme file you want and hit Enter:

start-process -filepath "C:WindowsResourcesThemesaero.theme"

start-process -filepath "C:WindowsResourcesThemesaero.theme"; timeout /t 3; taskkill /im "systemsettings.exe" /f

5] Change Theme via Control Panel

To change Theme via Control Panel in Windows 11/10, do the following:

Press Windows key + R to invoke the Run dialog.
In the Run dialog box, copy and paste the shell command below and hit Enter:

In the Personalisation window, click the desired theme under the My Themes, Windows Default Themes, or High Contrast Themes sections.
Exit Control Panel when done.

Most of the themes are old ones from Windows 10 and they have been adapted for Windows 11 but that’s still a huge selection to consider. You can right-click anywhere on your desktop and click on Personalize > select Themes to apply any of the installed themes on your PC, or click on Browse themes to find some more themes on the Microsoft Store.

The desktop theme feature was first introduced with Windows 7 and is exist in the latest Windows 10 as well. While a desktop theme usually includes a bunch of cool wallpapers, it’s possible to bundle mouse cursors, sound schemes, desktop icons, and screen savers with it.

In Windows 7 and 8/8.1, we could easily install new themes and switch between installed themes by opening the Personalization window.

In Windows 10, when you right-click on the desktop and click Personalize option, the Personalization section of the Settings app is launched instead of the classic Personalization window. Because of this, if you want to change the default theme to a newly installed one in Windows 10 or uninstall a desktop theme to free up some disk space, you need to follow a couple of extra steps.

Whether you want to switch between installed themes or uninstall a theme in Windows 10, you can use the directions mentioned in below given methods.

NOTE: Desktop themes are entirely different from visual styles. This guide covers only installing and switching between desktop themes and not visual styles.

To change the current theme

Step 1: Right-click on desktop, click Personalize option to open and navigate to Personalization section of the Settings app.

Visit the official Windows personalization gallery page to download as many themes as you want. The Personalization gallery features over 300 themes. Note that themes that were released for Windows 7 and Windows 8 are compatible with Windows 10, as well.

Step 2: After downloading themes, double-click on a theme to install and apply the theme.

Установка темы на Windows 10

Те, кто раньше устанавливал темы оформления на Windows 7, наверняка помнят принцип этой процедуры. Используя специальную утилиту, необходимо было пропатчить определенные файлы. После этого запрет на установку тем снимался. Сейчас в качестве безобидной альтернативы можно воспользоваться темами из Магазина Windows. Они меняют лишь цветовое оформление и фоновое изображение, но нередко именно этого и хочется определенным юзерам.

Способ 1: Microsoft Store

Простой метод установки темы, не требующий вмешательств в системные файлы. Для этого у вас в Windows должен быть установлен «Магазин приложений», через которые и будет осуществляться дальнейшая загрузка.

Как правило, подобные темы являются лишь подборкой фоновых изображений на определенную тематику и общей цветовой схемы, ничего кардинально не меняя. Поэтому такой вариант подойдет пользователям, желающим заменить привычный фон на набор обоев в формате слайд-шоу.

Нажмите правой кнопкой мыши по пустому месту на рабочем столе и выберите «Персонализация».

Переключитесь на раздел темы и справа найдите ссылку «Другие темы в Microsoft Store».

Запустится «Магазин» с приложениями и играми от Microsoft. Вас сразу же направит в раздел «Windows Themes».

Выберите понравившуюся тему и откройте ее. Некоторые темы могут быть платными. Если не готовы платить — используйте бесплатные варианты.

Нажмите кнопку «Получить».

Скачайте и запустите программу. В приветственном окне нажмите «Next».

Поставьте галочку рядом с пунктом принятия лицензионного соглашения и снова «Next».

Появится вторая часть лицензионного соглашения. Здесь кликните по «I Agree».

В новом окне откроется состояние трех файлов, которые нужно пропатчить. Обычно все три файла имеют статус «not patched», иногда некоторые не требуют изменения. Жмите на «Install».

Скачайте и распакуйте тему. Найдите в ней папку «Theme» и скопируйте два файла, которые в нем находятся.
Теперь откройте новую папку и перейдите по следующему пути:
C:WindowsResourcesThemes
Вставьте скопированные файлы из «Theme» (папке из Шага 1) в системную папку «Themes».

Если появится окно, требующее выдать права администратора для добавления файлов в системную папку, сделайте это кнопкой «Продолжить». Дополнительно поставьте галочку «Выполнить для всех текущих элементов».

Прямо из папки вы можете применить тему, нажав два раза левой кнопкой мыши по соответствующему файлу.

Если появится запрос от системы безопасности, выберите «Открыть».

Готово, тема применена.

Если у вас не изменился цвет панели задач, проверьте настройку в «Параметрах Windows». Для этого кликните ПКМ по рабочему столу, откройте «Персонализация».

Переключитесь на вкладку «Цвета» и поставьте галочку рядом с пунктом «В меню «Пуск», на панели задач и в центре уведомлений».

Как изменить тему в Windows 10

Зайти в раздел «Персонализация» одним из двух способов.

Самое простое — щелчок правой кнопкой мыши по рабочему столу Windows, а во всплывающем окне нажмите «Персонализация», чтобы перейти непосредственно к разделу.

Как загружать и применять новые темы в Windows 10

В своих последних обновлениях Windows 10 добавила в свой магазин приложений эксклюзивный раздел, из которого можно загружать новые темы. Однако получить к нему доступ непосредственно с главной страницы магазина невозможно. Но, в разделе «Темы», в меню «Персонализация» конфигурации Windows 10, поверх загруженных вами тем, есть ссылка «Получить дополнительные темы в магазине». Нажмите на нее.

Вы перейдете непосредственно к новому разделу магазина приложений, где есть темы для скачивания. Каждая из них отображается в поле предварительного просмотра обоев. Выберите понравившуюся тему и нажмите на нее.

В открывшемся окне будут показаны детали этой темы, просмотрите обои и совместимые устройства. После нажатия на кнопку «Получить» Windows автоматически произведет загрузку.

После загрузки в окне темы появится кнопка «Начать». Нажав на нее, вы перейдете непосредственно в раздел «Темы» настроек Windows, в котором были раньше.

В нем в списке доступных тем вы увидите ту, которую только что загрузили, поэтому для активации остается лишь щелкнуть по ней.

Как использовать сторонние темы в Windows

Помимо тем, которые вы можете найти на официальном носителе Windows, есть инструмент UltraUXThemePatcher. Он позволяет устанавливать на Windows 10 с обновлением Creators Update другие темы, которые вы найдете в сети.

Для загрузки перейдите на страницу приложения и нажмите кнопку UltraUXThemePatcher 3.2.1, которая отображается синим цветом.

Скачайте исполняемый файл .exe, и при открытии начнется процесс установки, в котором нужно просто нажимать Next для перебора вариантов. По завершении процесса увидите предупреждение, что программа может повредить Windows. Не паникуйте, потому что программа создает резервную копию всех исходных файлов системы, и все сделанные изменения можно отменить с помощью деинсталлятора.

Следующий шаг — загрузить темы.

Скачайте тему с загрузочного сайта и загрузите в формате ZIP. Теперь распакуйте этот файл и перейдите во вновь созданную папку.

В папке есть несколько подпапок для разных версий обновлений Windows 10. Выберите ту, что соответствует текущему обновлению, например, Creators Update. В ней вы найдете настроечные файлы .theme, а также папку с графическим материалом.
Эти три элемента нужно скопировать в определенной папке Windows. Чтобы перейти в нее, в строке браузера введите адрес C: Windows Resources Themes. Также в папку можно попасть путем переходов: Этот компьютер > локальный Диск (C:) > Windows > Resources > Themes. Переместите туда графические файлы и файлы .theme.

Windows запросит разрешения на перемещение файлов в эту папку, после получения разрешения картина должна выглядеть, как на снимке. Таким образом, вы загрузили тему в ОС Windows. Теперь необходимо дважды щелкнуть по выбранному файлу .theme. Изменения будут применены.

Воспользуйтесь одним из трех методов.

Через панель управления

Открыть «Пуск» и написать Control Panel, затем “Enter”.

Примечание! Исходные темы операционной системы не могут быть удалены из настроек.

Через Проводник

Комбинацией клавиш “Win+R”, открыть “Выполнить”, в строке написать %localappdata%MicrosoftWindowsThemes, нажать “Enter”.

Как активировать черную тему?

Многие люди предпочитают текст на темном фоне, особенно при навигации по меню на своих компьютерах. Некоторые пользователи с ослабленным зрением также находят, что «темную» или высококонтрастную тему намного легче читать.

По умолчанию виджеты Windows, меню, почтовый клиент и браузер Edge имеют черный или синий текст на белом или сером фоне. Однако, настроив несколько настроек, вы можете дать всей ОС темную тему.

Установка стандартной темы aero

Местом хранения стандартных тем Windows 10 является папка Themes.
Этот компьютер → системный диск → Windows → Resources → Themes.

Открыть в проводнике папку C:Windows/Resources/Themes.

Скопируйте Aero.файл темы на рабочий стол, присвоив файлу имя AeroLite. Запустите блокнот и перетащите AeroLite в открывшемся окне блокнота.
