Quickly Close Open Windows Using Shortcut Keys

How to type your way out of a mess with Windows keyboard shortcuts

Updated on November 13, 2020

One of the advantages of Microsoft Windows PCs is that you can have many different programs and windows open at the same time. This advantage becomes a disadvantage, however, when you have to close dozens of open windows. Fortunately, you can carry out repetitive actions like closing windows with keyboard shortcuts.

Instructions in this article apply to Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.

How to Close Windows With Alt + Spacebar + C

One option for closing windows with keyboard shortcuts is as follows:

  1. Open the window that you would like to close using your mouse.

  2. Press and hold down the Alt key, then press the Spacebar to reveal the right-click context menu at the top of the program window you’re trying to close.

  3. Release both keys and press the letter CThis will cause the window to close.

If you can execute this sequence using one hand while the other hand controls the mouse, you’ll be able to close roughly a dozen windows in about as many seconds.

How to Close Windows With Fn + Alt + F4

Another option is to select the window you want to close and then press Fn+Alt+F4. You’ll probably need two hands for this one.

Although the shortcut is officially listed as Alt+F4, you must hold down the Function (Fn) key for it to work.

How to Close Tabs With CTRL + W

The Ctrl+W shortcut only closes the current file you’re working on, but it leaves the program open. This feature can be handy if you want to leave the desktop program open but get rid of all the files you’re working on in quick succession.

Ctrl+W works in most browsers too, so you can close the current tab you’re looking at without taking your hands off the keyboard. If you use Ctrl+W when only one browser tab is open, then the program window will close.

How to Select Open Windows With Alt + Tab

It’s possible to select an open window without using the mouse. Press Alt+Tab to cycle through your open windows. Use this shortcut in conjunction with the other shortcuts to close all open windows without taking your hands off the keyboard.

How to See Your Desktop With Windows Key + D

Sometimes you don’t actually want to close all those windows; what you really want to do is just look at your desktop. To quickly access your desktop, press the Windows Key+D. Use the same shortcut to bring back all your windows.

How to Close a Group of Windows With the Mouse

When you have numerous files open in the same program, like a bunch of emails in Outlook, Word files, or several spreadsheets in Excel, you can close all of them at once using the mouse. Right-click the program in the Windows taskbar and select Close all windows (or Close Group in older versions of Windows).

This wikiHow teaches you how to close an open window on Windows 10, Windows 11, Mac, Android, iPhone, or iPad. If you’re using a computer, you’ll also learn how to minimize and hide open windows without closing them completely. There are a few keyboard shortcuts you can use to quickly close apps on your computer.

Things You Should Know

  • On a Windows PC, press Alt+F4 to close a window.
  • On a Mac, press Cmd+W to close the window or tab you have open.
  • On an Android, press the apps button and swipe up on the app to close it.
  • On an iPhone or iPad, swipe up from the bottom of the screen or double-click the home button, then swipe up on the app.
  1. Image titled Close Windows Step 1

    1

Click the X at the top-right corner of a window to close it. Nearly all Windows apps have an X at the top-right corner. Apps like these can typically be closed easily by clicking the X.

    • If the window contains an open document, you may be prompted to save or dismiss it before the window will close.
    • If the window has expanded to full-screen size and you don’t see the X, press F11 to bring it back to normal size first.
  2. Image titled Close Windows Step 2

    2

Press Alt+F4 to close a window. This keyboard shortcut will close the currently-active window just like clicking the X. If the window you’re using doesn’t have the X at the top-right corner, this combination of keys should do the trick.

    • If the window isn’t responding, you can open the Windows Task Manager to end the task.

    3

Press Ctrl+F4 to close an active document. This command can be used in an app that supports multiple active documents at once, such as Microsoft Word. The app itself will not close, but the open file will.

  4. Image titled Close Windows Step 4

    4

Click Ctrl+W to close a web browser tab. If you’re using a browser like Chrome or Edge, this keyboard shortcut will close the active browsing tab without closing the browser application.

    • Click Ctrl+ Shift+W to close all of the tabs in a window, effectively closing the entire window.
  5. Image titled Close Windows Step 5

    5

Press Win+ to minimize the active window (Windows 10 only). Pressing the Windows Key and the down-arrow key at the same time will not close the window, but it will remove it from your view so you can work on other things.

    • For Windows 11, you need to press twice to minimize, since the first press will just bring the window out of full-screen mode.
    • To restore a minimized window, click it on the taskbar, which is usually at the bottom of the screen.
    • To minimize all open windows at once, press Win+M.[1]
    • To reopen all of the minimized windows, press Win+ Shift+M.

Click the red circle at the top-left corner of a window to close it. If the window you’re closing contains an open document, you may be prompted to save or dismiss that document before the window will close.

    • If you aren’t able to use the mouse or prefer a keyboard shortcut, you can also press Cmd+Q on the keyboard to close the active window.[2]
    • Some apps require you to press and hold Cmd+Q to quit the application.
    • If an app isn’t responding and can’t be closed, you can try using Force Quit to close the app.
  2. Image titled Close Windows Step 7

    2

Press Cmd+W to close the active window. This keyboard shortcut works in the same way as clicking the red circle at the top-left corner.

    • If you’re using an app with tabs, such as a web browser, this shortcut will close the active tab only. To close all open tabs in the window, keep pressing Cmd+W until all are closed.
    • To close all open windows at once, press Cmd+ Option+W.
  3. Image titled Close Windows Step 8

    3

Press Cmd+M to minimize the active window. Minimizing a window doesn’t completely close it, but it does remove it from the screen until you need to bring it back into view. You can re-open the minimized window by clicking its icon at on the far-right side of the Dock.

    • To minimize all open windows at once, press Cmd+ Option+M.
  4. Image titled Close Windows Step 9

Press Fn+F11 to hide all open windows. Pressing this key will return you to your Mac’s desktop immediately. When you’re ready to re-open the windows you’ve hidden, just press Fn+F11.

  5. Image titled Close Windows Step 10

    5

Press Cmd+H to hide the active window. This command makes it look like the window is no longer open even though you’re not closing the app. When you’re ready to go back to the hidden window, click its application icon to re-open it.

    • To hide all windows at once, press Cmd+ Option+H.

    • If your Android has a button with a square (or overlapping squares) at the bottom of the screen, tapping it should bring up your recent apps.
    • If neither of these options work, try swiping up from the bottom of the home screen (but not so far that the app drawer opens).[4]

All answers I could quickly find on this topic involve either the tip Molly gave or using an application (or coding it yourself). For example (I haven’t tried this),
Close All Windows.

Also, by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc you get the Windows Task Manager, where you can see all running applications at once (among other things), select them, and End Task them.

I like to see my open windows ungrouped, but realized that this i.e. closing multiple windows at once was a problem with such a setting. A less time-taking method would be to use the command line like this :

taskkill /im explorer.exe -f

And then restart explorer using :

explorer

Caution : This will cause processes like file copying on the default Windows interface to abort.

I just found myself a quick way of doing this after a very long overtime work today.

Win10 user here:

Windows Key + Tab ( Will bring up something like Win Aero )

then

Press Delete until every window on your display is gone.

Sadly, if you have multi monitor/display, I don’t know how to Delete/close the other windows yet.

Simultaneously close all open windows:

  1. While pressing the Ctrl key, successively click each of the task icons on the taskbar.
  2. Right-click the last task icon, and choose Close Group.

If you only want to minimize the windows, use the ‘Show Desktop’ shorcut.

I usually (yes, this happens a lot to me..) just press Alt key and then go crazy on the F4 key until everything is shut down. Not one click, but it’s pretty fast. Or, depending on your system, reboot.. Don’t forget to save anything.

Or maybe you could simply switch users to continue your work without all these tabs. Then when you’re down, shutting down the computer will kill all the processes for the first user…

Not the best solutions, I just thought Id give this one a try.

You can use the command line utility NirCmd (freeware) (archive.org’s mirror for the webpage; archive.org’s mirror for the binary) and execute:

nircmd.exe win close alltopnodesktop

I use it on Windows 10 Enterprise x64 version 1709, and it works as intended: it will close all windows.

The program is supposed to work on Windows 9x/ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008, Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

It’s not a one-click solution but it is the fastest I know with my Windows 7 Pro

  1. Open taskbar properties (right click > properties) or (Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Taskbar and Start Menu)
  2. Select «Group similar taskbar buttons» = «Group similar taskbar buttons», and click OK
  3. Your windows are now grouped, right-click and select «Close all windows»
  4. Go back to taskbar properties to restore your old settings

After doing Ctrl-Shift-Esc, go to applications. Then, press shift down and end task, all of them will end (You might get a confirmation message or something depending on the program).

Sometimes, even when you close a program, the processes of the program (The biggest example is an unclosed connection to a local file) may still be on your computer. Most of the time, these processes are mainly overlooked by the owner software because they use almost no space. However, if you still want to end them, just to be meticulous, go to processes and you’ll have to end them one by one.

Easiest way I’ve found, sorry if someone already posted…

Go to task bar settings and set «Combine taskbar buttons» to «When taskbar is full». Right click on the group and click «Close all windows». Revert «Combine…» back to «Never».

Voilà

For closing all windows of a program by using only the keyboard:

windows button > esc > tab > right arrow till you reach desired program > right-mouse button > arrow up > enter

Note: This only works when ‘always combine’ is selected in the taskbar options and your keyboard has a right-click mouse button, usually somewhere next to the spacebar

Quickly Close Open Windows Using Shortcut Keys

How to type your way out of a mess with Windows keyboard shortcuts

One of the advantages of Microsoft Windows PCs is that you can have many different programs and windows open at the same time. This advantage becomes a disadvantage, however, when you have to close dozens of open windows. Fortunately, you can carry out repetitive actions like closing windows with keyboard shortcuts.

Instructions in this article apply to Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, and Windows XP.

How to Close Windows With Alt + Spacebar + C

One option for closing windows with keyboard shortcuts is as follows:

Open the window that you would like to close using your mouse.

Press and hold down the Alt key, then press the Spacebar to reveal the right-click context menu at the top of the program window you’re trying to close.

Release both keys and press the letter C. This will cause the window to close.

If you are running Windows 7 or later, there are multiple ways to access your Windows desktop.

List of all Windows 10 keyboard shortcuts: The ultimate guide

Home » Windows 10 » Fastest Way To Close All Programs and Windows Using Alt + F4 Key (Video Guide)

UPDATE in May 2019: There is a much better way to close all running programs quickly and easily. On Windows 10, open the Alt + Tab screen, use arrow keys or tab keys to select/focus the program that you would like to close, and then hit the Delete key.  Don’t release the Alt key to continue using the Alt + Tab screen. Refer to our 2 ways to close programs from Alt + Tab screen guide for step-by-step directions.

What’s the fastest way to close running apps and open windows in Windows? Moving mouse over the caption buttons and clicking on the Close button is the traditional way of closing running programs and open windows in Windows operating system.

Users who are a little more familiar with Windows and keyboard shortcuts prefer using Alt + F4 hotkey to close apps and windows.

Quickly close all running programs

If you’re like most Windows users, you probably have tens of programs and windows running on the taskbar, and manually close these programs and windows before shutting down your PC. While enabling hibernation mode and using the same instead of shutting down can save considerable amount of time and irritation every day, not all users use this handy feature for reasons best known to them.

Users who always shutdown their PCs might want to know the fastest way to close all running apps and program so that they can quickly close all programs and shut down Windows.

As you likely know, there are a couple of free utilities out there to help you close all running programs at once with a click or two but the truth is you can quickly close all running programs and windows without the help of third-party utilities.

Not all users know the power of Alt + F4 hotkey. One can use this hotkey to quickly close all running programs and windows. While this hotkey can’t be used to close all programs at once, you can certainly close programs and windows in a few seconds for sure. Note that this method works great on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 operating systems. I haven’t tried this on Windows XP but should work fine on that as well.

Closing all programs and windows using Alt + F4 shortcut

Follow the given below instructions to quickly close all running programs and windows.

Step 1: Simply press the Alt + Tab key once if all programs and windows are in minimized state.

Step 2: Next, start pressing Alt + F4 hotkey to start running apps and windows until you see the Shut Down Windows dialog.

Step 3: If all programs and windows have been closed, you can press the Enter key when you see the Shut Down dialog to commence shutting down Windows.

Step 4: If the Shut Down dialog appears even before closing all open windows and programs, simply press Alt + Tab key once to select an open window or program and then start pressing Alt + F4 hotkey again to kill remaining programs and windows.

Once all windows and programs are closed, you’ll see Shut Down Windows dialog. Simply press Enter key to shut down your PC. Hope this tip helps you in quickly closing all windows and programs. Good luck!

Action search

Example: To find the most frequently used shortcut for the ‘Undo’ action, type Undo and click on a suggested result.

What is this?

This tool aims to help software developers find most suitable keyboard shortcuts for given action. Select an ‘action’ and this page will list most used shortcuts for that action.

Sure, you don’t have to follow conventions for every action in your application, but if you’d like to prefer familiar key combinations, hopefully this page will help you.

How it works under the hood?

By using so called «Fuzzy match» text comparison, similar shortcuts actions for each action are calculated in the background and stored in the database earlier. As this is a intensive process (comparing every shortcut line to every other line), if a comparison isn’t made yet, a less accurate and faster method will be used (‘SOUNDEX’ function of MS SQL server). This is always indicated on the page.
