Can I get Apple lossless from iTunes (windows)?

You can listen to Apple Lossless content that you create in iTunes now. Given that no reference to Windows is made at all in the linked document my guess would be that Windows may not get access to Apple Music content in lossless format, but only time will tell.

You don’t have to do anything, unless you can hear the difference and want that extra detail. Even then you can be selective.

Hi, Sorry for digressing a bit:
I know that regular AAC 256 kbps files are listed as «Apple Music AAC audio file». (as viewed via song info for a track in iTunes)
What is the «Kind» (as viewed via song info for a track in iTunes) for ALAC audio files?
I am trying to use this to create a smart playlist filtering for Lossless files in iTunes on Windows.

I don’t think we can say for certain yet. As I wrote above:

What I ended up doing is removing all of my iTunes downloads, changing my audio playback to 24/192. And then redownloading the entire library. You can change your playing from Windows iTunes from Edit — Preferences — at the bottom, change it to 192 kHz / 24 bit.
Not sure if this makes a difference, I personally can’t tell the difference even with super high-end equipment.
But Apple has not updated PC iTunes in a really long time. But if you wanted to see and try this would be the best way of doing it.
Just make sure what your playing things through can support 24/192.
I am currently running everything through an AV receiver that can support 32/384 via HDMI.

Changing your preferences there doesn’t affect what gets downloaded from the iTunes Store. You can re-rip your CDs in higher quality if you wish.

First of all if you are worried about REAL Hi-Fi quality then you should know AV reciver will never play or make you hear the difference between 16/24 bit and 44KHz to 192 or more. You need integrated amplifier and good speakers to actually hear the best sound that Hi rez offers. Dont get that what AV «can do». AV has mediocre DAC chips unless you buy the high-end 3K+ recivers that have good dac but still wont be as good as same price separate intergrated amp.
I’m using also PC iTunes but its goes to 3k integrated amp to speakers leaving my reciver to play movies not music.

and it sounds awesome

My Sony STR-DE1075 pushes my macintosh speakers (high end speakers not apple related) very well and all i play is flac audio, and I think it sounds just fine.. I can tell the difference. But lets be real here for a minute when i really want to hear the crisp sound I use my RAAL SR1a’s paired with a Schiit Jot R Amp/DAC. Those alone were WELL over 3k, but thats the cost you pay when your a audiophile. I prefer the sound of a viynl over a digital file but maybe thats just me lol.
Jun 29, 2021 9:43 AM in response to fds
If you like music listening multi channel stereo then its fine. Majority audiophiles use 2 speakers to get best sound and dead on soundsteage and image (no AV processing in middle.)
fds thats what i ment. Real audiophiles will never looks for AV recivers for serious music listening. You want as less as distortion and processing as possible. And only best speakers + intergrated amps provide that. I’m looking for external dac now to jump to next level music enojyment and instrument separation for wider eperience. Dac and amp cost total around 6-7k eur. Speakers are on top of that.

You couldn’t afford my Mcintosh Audio setup.. My “Av” receiver is for my computer as is pared with XR50s.. I have a Mcintosh MC152 AMP, with a C49 pre amp (overkill and not really needed) all pushing 2 Mcintosh XR100’s. Real audiophiles know nothing compares to vinyl.. Go flex on someone else dude. Because your“System” doesn’t even come close to mine, which cost me over 20 grand. To anyone else if you want good sound go find a find a pair of sennheiser hd 650 used or new, a reasonable headphone dac/amp and enjoy.

First the basics why i’m asking this question:
So, i have pretty high-end setup regarding headphones. (HDV820 and HD800S combo).
Getting new iPad Pro 2021 12.9 soon so i can definitely plug it into that. (Don’t know the limitations of iPadOS, can this be done?)
I also have dedicated Intel i5 Nuc running Windows 10 that i (was planning) to install audirvana and use that to feed my DAC. The audirvana App vas remotely controlled from my ipad.
My question:
Now that Apple has released lossless Apple Music. Can Apple Music be streamed with lossless quality someway to external DAC using Win10?
Or do i have to purchase Mac Mini or just plug it into my ipad? (None of these options are ideal. I prefer Win10 over Mac)
Thanks!

It’s disappointing that you can’t even use iTunes on Windows to stream Apple Music Lossless, even though I believe iTunes does support the codec itself (for example when importing a CD).

I don’t understand how Apple can sell hardware like iPhones/iPads and services like Apple Music, claim them to be «Windows Compatible» and then provide such a shoddy experience.
iTunes for Windows has been a MESS for a long time, let alone the fact it doesn’t support Lossless yet. For example this stupid bug has been an issue for me for years and they still haven’t fixed it. Also I’ve had several Windows computers in my house over the past few years (GOOD ones with high-end hardware) and they’ve been the ONLY devices that won’t reliably stream music to AirPlay devices in my house via iTunes.
I know Apple’s priority is their own hardware but would it really kill them to throw a little bit of that $2T at fixing the Windows version of their software?

Headphones wise I’m using a Apple camera adapter into a Audioquest Colbalt for connecting to my iPhone and iPad.
For external dac you could use the iPad and camera adapter into the usb input into the dac.

I have done a bit of research on this. The only way I know how to get Apple Lossless on a DAC while NOT using Apple hardware is to use the Android Apple Music app and use an OTC adapter to connect to a USB cable. The only problem is that I have no way of confirming that the output is truly lossless (that I know of anyway).

What quality does the Bluestacks output at? I thought emulators throttle the quality. I too use it and find it slightly better, but not sure it is «true» lossless.

If they removed iTunes on Windows there would be grounds for refunds of corresponding purchases.
For example if they removed iTunes on Windows, and you used it to sync music to your iPhone — they are essentially disabling you from accessing features you paid for.
Under Australian Consumer Laws, you would be eligible for refunds.
They won’t do that.

Web version of Apple Music doesnt let you see/control what quality of audio you are playing.
I have had a pretty bad time with the web browser..
Not to mention it doesnt have any native app features like iTunes on Mac has

▣ А в AirPods Pro?
▣ А в AirPods Max?
Dolby Atmos.
Dolby Atmos.
Lossless?
Lossless?
Dolby Atmos?
Apple Music.
Lossless?

Hi everyone, I just got out of a conversation with Apple Support asking about lossless on Windows.
The bad: We’re stuck. There’s no way to play lossless or Hi-Res on Windows currently.
The best we can do is submit feedback on iTunes here. Maybe by the time iOS 15 is released this fall we’ll have an actual Apple Music app or iTunes update.
level 1
This fucking sucks I was waiting to hear if it would carry over to iTunes as well. I hope every day they release a new app for windows because iTunes is a slog.
level 2
Yes but you can’t even download 4K video on iTunes either. A Mac can do both albeit encrypted but you can still download them both
level 1
Did they mention anything at all about the browser apple music player streaming lossless?
level 2
They did not. I specifically asked about it with my inquiry and did not get a positive response, so I’m presuming that means “no” unfortunately.
level 1
I know this is a workaround, but you can download and run Shairport4w on your windows machine, and AirPlay to it from your iDevice as Airplay is lossless.
level 2
Thanks. Can confirm this works. Hopefully Apple addresses this soon, and makes things a bit easier for Windows/web app users.
level 1
I should expect that, Apple doesn’t care about anyone who doesn’t have Apple products
level 2
I don’t think so, I used the Android app for an year and it’s great. Even better than Spotify for Android.
level 2
Except, most people using Apple Music have an Apple device and are also paying a subscription fee to Apple (which is more valuable to them financially than a device purchase, I suspect)
level 1
I just switched to Amazon music HD, working great so far, I transferred all my playlists with Tune my music, worked great. The only issues is I can’t scrobble with the desktop app, and I can’t import my mp3. So I’ll see after the trial if I stay with Amazon or if I switch back to Deezer which filled all my needs but for a higher price in Hi-Fi.
level 2
Why not use iTunes which will do that and if your mp3 files match, they get played as high res audio on your phone
level 1
Guess I’ll cancel my Apple Music once Spotify offers lossless music.

Lossless Day One Subscriber
Such a bummer. I need a PC for work, and that’s where I have my DAC and Amp setup with. I guess I’ll continue to have a Qobuz subscription just for my PC.
level 1
Hah… Funny thing, i did the same as OP and spent over an hour getting to a senior person. I was asking about Android and its compatibility. They kept saying I should contact the phone manufacturer. I explained that Tidal works and that i already have a DAC as well, but that i can’t find the setting for lossless audio, nor is there any badge on the Maroon 5 album they advertised. The advisor literally told me «at this point, i doubt that you will be able to use the feature on Android.» Nice one Apple… Nice one…
level 2
Read some other posts and it does seem this feature will likely arrive later, but they really should have communicated this adequately. A little note in the app would be appreciated — «hey we’re working on it, thanks for being a customer» rather than finding out via reddit and feeling like worthless garbage because i don’t use an iPhone.
level 1
That’s unfortunate. I recently got a dedicated DAC/AMP and some nice headphones and I was excited for lossless Apple Music.
Can’t even use Spatial Audio on my iPad/iPhone since neither have headphone jacks.
More than a little frustrating.
One of the few perks of Apple Music over Spotify is Lossless audio. If you have a Windows PC, however, you miss out on the excellent audio quality Apple Music has to offer. iTunes, the only official Apple Music app on Windows, does not support lossless audio. You can still get Apple Music lossless on Windows 11.
Let’s begin.
Install Apple Music Android App on Windows 11
The only non-Apple platform that supports Apple Music lossless audio is Android. Windows 11 happens to be able to run Android apps. So, you simply need to install the Apple Music Android app on Windows 11. Although there are many ways to get Apple Music on Windows PC, you need to install the Android app for Apple Music to get a lossless music experience.
Currently, Windows 11 does not support Android apps on stable builds. But we already have a detailed guide to help you to install Android apps on Windows 11. Even when Android apps are officially available on stable Windows 11, there won’t be any Google Play Store. Windows 11 features the Amazon App Store, which does not have Apple Music.
You can download the Apple Music APK from reliable sources online. The good thing is Apple Music does not depend on Google Play Services, so it will work on Windows 11. Once you have the APK and have installed WSA (Windows Subsystem for Android), follow the steps below.
- Press the Windows key and type Windows Subsystem for Android to search for it.
- Open Windows Subsystem for Android.
- Click on Files at the top to open the built-on File manager app and start the Android layer.
- Scroll down and toggle on Developer mode.
- Click the Refresh button next to IP address.
- Click Copy to copy the IP address.
- Launch Terminal from the start menu.
- Enter this command to connect using ADB.
adb connect <IP Address>
- Replace <IP Address> in the above command with the copied IP address using a right-click. For example,
adb connect 172.30.241.207
- Replace <IP Address> in the above command with the copied IP address using a right-click. For example,
- Next, type
adb install
, press space, then drag and drop the downloaded APK file into the Terminal and hit Enter. - Once Apple Music is installed, you will see a Success message in the Terminal.

Get Apple Music Lossless on Windows 11
Not that you have the Apple Music Android app, you can simply turn on Lossless audio in the settings. Here is how to get Apple Music Lossless on Windows PC by switching it on from the Apple Music app.
- Launch the Apple Music Android app from the Windows 11 Start menu.
- Sign in to your Apple Music account.
- Click on the three-dot menu button in Library.
- Select Settings > Audio Quality.
- Turn on the toggle next to Lossless Audio.
- When you do that, you’ll notice it enabled a couple more options right below it.
- Tap on Wi-Fi Streaming, Downloads, or Mobile Data Streaming.
- Select Lossless or Hi-Res Lossless.
Needless to say, Lossless audio uses more data, so you may not want to turn it on for Mobile Data Streaming. If you don’t have plenty of storage, you might also want to avoid turning it on for Downloads. But when you have Lossless audio enabled, you will see the Lossless tag on the songs you play.

Об Apple Music
