Through the 1990s the Intel Indeo codec was very popular, many computer video games and other software utilized it to encode their videos and audio. Indeo seems to be a blend, more precisely a portmanteau, of «Intel Video».
Originally the Indeo codecs were developed by the Intel Architecture Labs since 1992. It was one of the first codecs without a need of hardware acceleration. The version history goes from Intel Indeo version 2 (IR21), 3 (IV31 and IV32), 4 (IV4 and IV41) to 5 (IV50 and IV51). As of June 27, 2000, Ligos Technology acquired the rights to Intel Indeo media software.

Ligos Indeo payware
Ligos later provided Indeo video version 5.2 called «Indeo XP for Windows» as payware with the following new features:
- Optimization of the Indeo Video 5 scalability feature
- A wavelet compression algorithm that improves visual quality over previous versions of Indeo
- Better compression at all levels of video quality than previous generation codecs
- Playback performance enhancements including smoother, interpolated «zoom by 2» playback
- Indeo XP also includes the legacy codecs Indeo Video 3.2, Indeo Video 4.5, and Indeo Audio 2.5
- For all Windows OS from Windows 95 to Windows XP
In January 2007 Ligos released a new package called «Ligos Indeo Codecs», which is also payware. It includes Indeo video codec 5.2, Indeo video codec 4.5 and Indeo audio decoder 2.5. Indeo video 3.2 support was dropped and «Indeo XP for Windows» wasn’t available anymore.
As of the beginning of 2020, the website of Ligos Corporation went offline and the package «Ligos Indeo Codecs» isn’t available anymore. For historic reasons view the website via archive.org: Ligos Indeo Codecs.
Indeo codec on Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10
On Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1(?) and Windows 10(?) the Indeo video codec is integrated but not registered. Open a command prompt («Start» -> «Run…» -> type «cmd» or «command», click «OK») and execute the following commands.
First change directory (64 bit Windows only)
cd C:WindowsSysWOW64
Second register the DLL
regsvr32 ir50_32.dll
Now the Indeo video codec is activated and videos based on this codec will be played back. To unregister Indeo just execute the command below. The following error message can be ignored, Indeo will be removed from being active.
regsvr32 /u ir50_32.dll
Indeo codec download
The latest free versions of Indeo 5, also supplied as iv5setup.exe, include Indeo video 3.2, Indeo video 4.5, Indeo video 5.11 and Indeo audio 2.5.

Intel Indeo is a simple program for Windows that allows you to install a video codec created by Intel. This component can be used when playing footage from a DVR or a camcorder, as well as in some computer games.
Purpose
The video codec was developed by Microsoft. However, it may be dangerous as remote code may be executed through it. The component itself can be used for different tasks in some applications and for browsing Internet sites.
General notes
Commonly, this software is deployed while installing a video game. If you have some classic PC titles, especially old ones, then for their correct operation, you may need this distribution.
In addition, the codec is required for playback. However, nowadays there are many multimedia players that can open video files without any additional components like VLC Media Player. Alternatively, you can install the K Lite Codec Pack and in most cases there will be no issues with the playback.

Intel Indeo uses a minimal amount of system resources and does not interfere with the computer’s performance in any way. The full-speed video playback is smooth and is achieved without using hardware acceleration.

Seems to load OK on a Win 7 Pro machine, but will not open .ivf video files.
Yep — works a treat on Windows 7 — IF you use custom install and uncheck the Web Browser box.

Неожиданно столкнулся с проблемой воспроизведения видео, закодированного вышеупомянутым кодеком в «семерке». Во-первых выяснилось, что по умолчанию в системе он просто не установлен (в отличие от ХР), во-вторых — установщик не может зарегистрировать кодек в системе и сделать его видимым для софта, даже при запуске «от Администратора». К сожалению, в русскоязычном Интернете по этой проблеме ни слова! Решение проблемы нашел чисто случайно на одном забугорном сайте. Опуская рассуждения автора, привожу решение этой проблемы:
1. Установить сам кодек: Indeo Codecs Legacy Package (IV31, IV32, IV41, IV50). Запускать от имени Администратора!
2. После установки запустить командную строку от имени администратора: Пуск — Все программы — Стандартные — Командная строка (правый клик, «Запуск от имени Администратора«)
3. Ввести следующую строку: regsvr32 ir50_32.dll
ENTER
Всё, после этого видео, закодированное кодеком Indeo версии 3, 4, 5 будет воспроизводиться без проблем.

Приветствую друзья. Сегодня тема софта — выясним предназначение приложения Indeo Software, насколько оно нужное, возможно его стоит удалить, чтобы ПК работать чуточку быстрее.
Indeo Software — видеокодек, созданный компанией Интел, может использоваться при воспроизведении некоторых видео (записанных с видеорегистратора, видеокамеры), а также в некоторых играх.
Разбираемся
- Значит сперва поймем что такое Indeo — это видеокодек, который был создан компанией Интел в далеком 1992 году. Потом был куплен другой компанией — Ligos Corporation (в 2000 году). Что делает кодек? Он позволяет осуществить полноскоростное воспроизведение видео без задействования аппаратного ускорения.
- На сайте Майкрософт сказано что этот кодек сделала Майкрософт. Но суть не в этом, а в том что на сайте также написано, что кодек может быть опасным — через его могут выполнять удаленный код. Сам кодек может использоваться в разных задачах — в некоторых программах, при просмотре некоторых веб-сайтов. Конечно на данный момент уязвимость кодека я думаю уже устранена, но это еще один балл, чтобы удалить Indeo Software.
- Кстати сейчас этот кодек называется Ligos Indeo Codec.
- Однако нахожу информацию, что этот кодек может быть задействован в играх. Например в одной старой игре Venom заставки и ролики сделаны именно этим кодеков. Как насчет современных игр — не знаю.
- Кодек Indeo может быть нужен в том случае, если видео было закодировано именно им.
- Также выяснил — по умолчанию этот кодек не стоит в системе (только в Windows XP). Значит откуда он взялся? Возможно его поставила игра.
- Оказывается формат файла IFV, точнее его название, расшифровывается как Indeo Video Format. В этом формате может быть видео с видеорегистратора. Файлы IFV можно открыть плеером MDVR Player. Также этот кодек может понадобиться для воспроизведения видео с видеокамеры.

Indeo Software — нужна ли эта программа?
Смотрите что получается:
- Эта программа могла быть установлена игрой. Если вы ставили какие-то игры, особенно старые, то для корректной их работы — возможно потребуется данная программа.
- Также она может потребоваться для воспроизведения некоторого видео. Но это маловероятно — во-первых многие видеоплееры могут воспроизводить без всяких кодеков, например VLC, во-вторых если речь идет о воспроизведении видео и нужны кодеки — стоит просто установить K-Lite Codec Pack Full и в 99% не будет никаких проблем с воспроизведением видеоконтента..
- Indeo Software — это приложение, которое на 99% никак не будет грузить ПК. Висеть процесс от этой проги не должен. Но можете проверить — откройте диспетчер, на вкладке с процессами посмотрите, если там есть подозрительный процесс — нажмите правой кнопкой, выберите пункт Открыть расположение, далее название папки, в которой размещен файл, если оно содержит Indeo, значит все понятно. Лишний процесс — не оч хорошо, особенно если скорее всего приложение Indeo Software вам не нужно.
- Если сомневаетесь — можно просто сначала создать контрольную точку восстановления, а потом уже удалить Indeo Software.
Indeo Software — как удалить программу?
Предлагаю простую мини-инструкцию:
- Зажмите клавиши Win + R, вставьте команду appwiz.cpl, кликните ОК.
- Откроется окно установленного софта.
- Находим Indeo Software, нажимаем правой кнопкой, выбираем Удалить.
- Следуем инструкциям на экране, обычно нужно нажимать Далее/Next/Удалить/Uninstall.
Повторюсь, что перед удалением неплохо будет создать точку восстановления. Если что — сможете все вернуть обратно.
