Kon-Boot (aka konboot, kon boot) is a software utility that allows users to bypass Microsoft Windows passwords and Apple macOS passwords (Linux support has been deprecated) without lasting or persistent changes to system on which it is executed. It is also the first reported tool capable of bypassing Windows 10 online (live) passwords and supporting both Windows and macOS systems.^[1] It is also a widely used tool in computer security, especially in penetration testing.^[2][3][4] Since version 3.5 Kon-Boot is also able to bypass SecureBoot feature.^[5]

History[edit]

Kon-Boot was originally designed as a proof of concept, freeware security tool, mostly for people who tend to forget their passwords. The main idea was to allow users to login to the target computer without knowing the correct password and without making any persistent changes to system on which it is executed.

First Kon-Boot release was announced in 2008 on DailyDave mailing list.^[6] Version 1.0 (freeware) allowed users to login into Linux based operating systems and to bypass the authentication process (allowing access to the system without knowing the password).

In 2009 author of this software announced Kon-Boot for Linux and 32-bit Microsoft Windows systems.^[7] This release provided additional support for bypassing Windows systems passwords on any Windows operating system starting from Windows Server 2008 to Windows 7. This version is still available as freeware^[8]

Newest Kon-Boot releases are available only as commercial products^[1][9] and are still maintained.

Technology[edit]

Kon-Boot works like a bootkit^[13][14] (thus it also often creates false positive^[15][16][17] alerts in antivirus software). It injects (hides) itself into BIOS memory. Kon-Boot modifies the kernel code on the fly (runtime), temporarily changing the code responsible for verification user’s authorization data while the operating system loads.

In contrast to password reset tools like CHNTPW (The Offline NT Password Editor), Kon-Boot does not modify system files and SAM hive,^[18] all changes are temporary and they disappear after system reboots.

Additional Features[edit]

While by default Kon-Boot bypasses Windows passwords it also includes some additional features that are worth noting:

• Kon-Boot can change Windows passwords due to embedded Sticky-Keys^[19] feature. For example after successful Windows boot with Kon-Boot user can tap SHIFT key 5 times and Kon-Boot will open a Windows console window running with local system privileges. Fully working console can be used for a variety of purposes. For example in case of changing Windows password following command can be used:^[20] net user [username] [newpassword](selected user can be later added as new Windows administrator by typing: net localgroup administrators [username] /add). Similarly following command:^[21] net user [username] * will erase current Windows password for selected user. Obviously many other actions are available since the Windows console is running with system privileges.

  Kon-Boot automatically executing PowerShell script with system privileges

  In the commercial Kon-Boot editions it is possible to use Automatic PowerShell Script Execution feature ^[22] which automatically executes (after Windows boot) given PowerShell script with full system privileges. This feature can be used to automatize various tasks for example performing forensics data gathering task etc. To use this feature Windows needs to be installed in UEFI mode.

Limitations (prevention)[edit]

Users concerned about tools like Kon-Boot should use disk encryption^[23] (FileVault, Bitlocker, Veracrypt etc.) software as Kon-Boot is not able to bypass disk encryption.^[24] BIOS password and enabled SecureBoot^[25][26] feature is also a good prevention measure. However Kon-Boot since version 3.5 is able to bypass SecureBoot feature.^[27] Kon-Boot does not support virtualization and instructs users to turn it off in the bios.^[28] Kon-Boot does not support ARM devices such as Apple’s M1 chip.

System Requirements

General requirements:Pentium III compatible processor, 100MB free space on the hard drive. USB flash drive (prefered USB pendrive size is 16GB), keyboard. Compatibile BIOS version. Windows system is required for installer to run. USB flash drive is required for the UEFI version to work. Internet connection is required for the installer to work. longky.mobi can be only installed by using the original installer. One longky.mobi license permits the user to install longky.mobi on only one USB device (USB pendrive).

Not supported:Disk encryption, secure boot must be disabled., tablets and tablet hybrids, multiple operating systems installed on target computer, 3rd party loaders are supported, kernel debuggers, virtualization software (VMware, QEMU, VirtualBox) is not supported. CD and Floppy versions are deprecated.

Since version 2.7 longky.mobi CD version is no longer available. We have left the old .iso images just for compatibility purposes. All versions starting from longky.mobi 2.7 can be installed only on USB media.

Installation to USB

Since version 2.7 longky.mobi can be installed only by using our GUI installer. Internet connecton is required for installer to work. Please note that all other installation options like CD installation are depracated (older longky.mobi version is included in the package for compatibility reasons or in case of temporary lack of Internet connection).

We recommend using USB pendrive with less than 16 GB capactity, although it is not necessary (some older BIOSes have problems with longky.mobi loading from larger USB pendrives).

Please use USB pendrive manufactured by reputable company like KINGSTON, SANDISK, SONY. Please don»t use USB pendrives from «NO-NAME» companies — they may cause problems on various BIOSES.

Secure Boot Bypass

Starting from 3.5 version (commercial licenses) longky.mobi is able to bypass Secure Boot protection on PCs (excluding Apple computers). Following tutorial explains how to boot longky.mobi while the Secure Boot option is enabled in BIOS:

Starting from 3.5 version (commercial licenses) longky.mobi is able to bypass Secure Boot protection on PCs (excluding Apple computers). See Secure Boot Bypass for details.

In order to use longky.mobi in UEFI mode you need to make sure that the UEFI BIOS is not configured to use Secure Boot feature. Secure Boot feature is typically disabled however in case of any problems please enter the BIOS setup and disable the Secure Boot option manually (see examples below).

Disable virtualization support in BIOS

Newer Windows version use Virtualization-based Security (VBS) and/or hypervisor security. This can cause BSODs (Blue Screen Of Death) during loading Windows with longky.mobi (longky.mobi does not support virtualization). In order to prevent this from happening go to your BIOS setup and temporarily disable virtualization support (VT/VT-x) as presented on screenshots below.

This step is optional, try it if you experience Blue Screen of Death during booting your target Windows machine with longky.mobi.

Following screenshots present how to disable virtualization support on various BIOSES (don»t forget to SAVE the changed settings).

Automatic Powershell Script Execution Feature

Starting from version 2.7 (commercial edition only) longky.mobi allows user to run automatic powershell script just after the boot of target operating system. Powershell script of user choice is being run with full system rights. This gives excellent and very powerful opportunity for the forensics team to gather all the necessary data from the target system. Right now the feature works only in UEFI mode and on Windows 8 / Windows 10 systems (x64).

In order to use this feature just edit the «auto.ps1» file on your longky.mobi USB media.

Will this feature be added to normal (legacy) BIOS mode?

It seems rather unlikely. Legacy BIOS longky.mobi loader is very hard to maintain, additional unscheduled constant Windows 8 / Windows 10 security updates do not make things easier. Finally UEFI is now recognized as the BIOS replacement. Check our faq for more detailed answer on this topic.

Sticky Keys Feature

What»s Sticky Keys Feature?Sticky keys is a new longky.mobi escalation feature which allows user to spawn a console window with system admin rights before the user is logged in. longky.mobi allows you to get console window while the Windows login screen is still active.

Requirements:

Windows operating system booted with longky.mobiSticky keys must be enabled in your target Windows system (they are by default)longky.mobiV2.1 and higher

Usage steps:

In order to activate sticky keys feature please tap SHIFT 5 times (FAST). (it should work with default Windows configurations)

How to change profile password?

Please note: this is only for local accounts:

To change your password you can try the following way (after booting with longky.mobi):

Navigate the Start Menu to Control PanelSelect «User Accounts and Family Safety»If the User Account Control window appears click «Yes» and leave the password field emptySelect «Create a new account»Create the account (pick a name) and set the permissions (administrator).Disconnect Kon Boot and restart the computer to restore original Windowsauthentication functionality.

After restart:

Select your new User Account (the account you have created)Navigate the Start Menu to Control PanelSelect «User Accounts and Family Safety»Select the target User Account (the one you want to change)Select «Change the password»Input the new information for the account and click «Change password»You are done

How to change profile password using console?

You can change your local account password by using the Sticky Keys Feature and using following commands:

net user username newpassword

where the username is the name of the local account and newpassword is the new password for this local account. Please note this is only for local accounts.

How to remove longky.mobi account on Windows

You can delete your local Windows account by using the Sticky Keys Feature and using following commands:

net user username /delete

where the username is the name of the local account.

So in case of longky.mobi account, type:

net user longky.mobi /delete

and press enter.

Password expired

If you experience «password has expired and needs to be changed» error during your login attempt it simply means that your password has expired. This is caused by custom Windows password policy not a problem of longky.mobi itself.

To fix this issue (after booting the target Windows OS with longky.mobi):

Type: net user username /expires:never (where username is the target user name)If previous step was not enough, try typing: net user username newpassword (where username is the target user name)Reboot for changes to take effect

Locked account (account unlock)

It should be possible to unlock a locked Windows account by using the Sticky Keys Feature:

Type: net user username /active=yes (where username is the target user name)Reboot for changes to take effect

If this is a domain account please try:

Type: net user username /DOMAIN /active:YES (where username is the target user name)Reboot for changes to take effect

Please note longky.mobi is a tool for bypassing passwords not really designed for unlocking so this information is just «extra».

Windows 10 Online Authorization Support

UPDATE 05.2018: Windows 10 online account authorization bypass was added to the 2.8 longky.mobi Release (commercial licenses only, UEFI systems only).

As for personal licenses:

Personal licenses does not offer online authorization bypass on Windows 10 systems. However user can still access the system as local administrator. In fact in the longky.mobi v2.5 administrator account can be added automatically, as presented in the following scenario:

Boot your machine with longky.mobi on USB (usb version is required)Wait until your Windows 10 machine boots upYou should see following message displayed on the screen

If you want to get your new administrator account added click YES and follow the rest of instructions displayed on the screen

In case of problems (i.e. when message box was not displayed) you can add the administrator account manually using the sticky keys feature. Please see the Sticky Keys Feature for further details.

Windows HELLO login

If you account is an online (live) Windows 10 account and you have a commercial longky.mobi license (commercial longky.mobi licenses allow to bypass Windows 10 online/live passwords (UEFI)) you can bypass the Windows HELLO authorization as well.

Please notice: for online/live password bypass option to work it is necessary to wait approximetely ~5minutes after Windows login screen appears (longky.mobi message box should be displayed on the screen when things are ready).

After selecting your target account, please pick Sign-in options Pick Microsoft account password option (or PIN alternatively) Put any password / pin (not blank) and press enter

Функционал

Чтобы воспользоваться всеми функциями приложения, необходимо перенести его образ на загрузочный носитель. Для этого можно воспользоваться «флешкой» или диском. Чтобы это осуществить, можно использовать мастер программы, вот только он не переведен на русский язык. Процесс авторизации осуществляется с помощью BIOS. Имеется меню «Boot», где можно настроить запуск USB и другое. После чего, появится обычное окно для авторизации. Поля в этом окне можно оставить пустыми или заполнить любимыми данными, авторизация все равно произойдет. 

Таким образом, пользователь сможет войти в ПК как администратор, сможет настраивать компьютер по своему усмотрению, устанавливать приложения и т.д. Вот только изменить текущий пароль, не получится, для этого нужно знать актуальный пароль, но тогда приложение бы не понадобилось.

В статье подробно описан и продемонстрирован процесс создания и использования загрузочной USB флешки с программой Kon-Boot для обхода пароля ОС Windows.

Kon-Boot — это прикладная программа, которая изменяет содержимой ядра Windows во время загрузки системы, обходя авторизацию Windows и позволяя войти в защищенную паролем учётную запись без ввода пароля. Пароль при этом не изменяется и не сбрасывается. При следующей нормальной загрузке Windows содержимое ядра восстанавливается и система вновь просит пароль для доступа в учётную запись. Kon-Boot может быть загружен через CD-диск или USB-устройство.

Kon-Boot поддерживает следующие версии Windows: XP (начиная с SP2), Vista, 7, 8 (8.1), 10, а также Windows Server 2003 и Windows Server 2008.

Для создания загрузочной USB флешки с Kon-Boot понадобятся:

1. USB флешка. Имейте ввиду, что в процессе создания загрузочной USB флешки с Kon-Boot вся информация находящаяся на флешке будет удалена;

2. Программа Kon-Boot.

I. Создание загрузочной USB флешки с Kon-Boot

1. Вставьте USB флешку в USB разъём. Распакуйте (прим. с помощью WinRAR или просто открыть через Проводник) скачанную Вами ранее программу Kon-Boot (Рис.1).

2. Откройте папку Kon-Boot for Windows 2.5.0 и запустите файл KonBootInstaller от имени администратора (прим. для вызова меню нажмите правой кнопкой мыши на файле KonBootInstaller, затем выберите Запуск от имени администратора) (Рис.2).

3. В появившемся окне нажмите ОК (Рис.3).

4. В разделе Available USB drivers из выпадающего списка выберите USB флешку, затем нажмите Install to USB stick (with EFI support) (Рис.4).

5. В открывшемся окне нажмите Да (Рис.5).

6. Начнётся процесс установки (Рис.6).

7. После окончания установки нажмите ОК (Рис.7).

II. Запуск и использование загрузочной USB флешки с Kon-Boot

1. Вставьте загрузочную USB флешку с Kon-Boot в разъём USB. Сразу после запуска компьютера необходимо вызвать Boot menu. Т.к. на разных материнских платах и ноутбуках клавиши вызова Boot menu отличаются, ниже приведена таблица (Рис.8) в соответствии с которой Вам необходимо нажать соответствующую клавишу (прим. если у Вас стационарный компьютер, и Вы не знаете какая материнская на нём стоит, обесточьте компьютер, откройте боковую крышку системного блока и посмотрите модель материнской платы).

2. Boot menu незначительно отличается на разных моделях и приблизительно выглядит следующим образом (Рис.9, Рис.10, Рис.11).

3. Выберите загрузку с USB флешки и нажмите Enter.

4. В появившемся окне загрузчика выберите пункт Kon-Boot (CURRENT VERSION) и нажмите Enter. Далее Вы увидите на экране надпись Kon-Boot, после чего начнётся загрузка Windows (Рис.12).

5. На стадии ввода пароля оставьте поле пустым, либо можете написать случайные символы (Windows примет их как за правильный пароль) и нажмите Enter (Рис.13).
