If you had worked with images, you would be aware that there are a plethora of image file formats. Some of them are popular while many others are less known. The Nikon Electronic Format (NEF) is a model file type used by Nikon devices to save Raw images. However, most image editing application cannot open these types of file. This application allows the computer user to quickly and easily edit these types of files on a Windows computer.
The unique feature of this file is that it has been around since 1999 when the first version of Nikon Camera that supports the file was invented. Since then, the Nikon family of cameras has been improved extensively with various innovations, but all of the cameras still use the NEF Codec. This consistency is impressive. To open this type of file, the user can either download the NEF Codec or use the Nikon proprietary ViewNX application.
Many versions of Nikon Cameras use this Codec, it is the company’s bespoke standard for processing image files. If you want to view these types of files, the Codec will help you achieve your objectives.
Nikon NEF Codec is licensed as freeware for PC or laptop with Windows 32 bit and 64 bit operating system. It is in graphic plugins category and is available to all software users as a free download.

Freeware
Freeware programs can be downloaded used free of charge and without any time limitations. Freeware products can be used free of charge for both personal and professional (commercial use).
Open Source

In some cases, ads may be show to the users.
Demo
Demo programs have a limited functionality for free, but charge for an advanced set of features or for the removal of advertisements from the program’s interfaces. In some cases, all the functionality is disabled until the license is purchased. Demos are usually not time-limited (like Trial software) but the functionality is limited.
Trial
Trial software allows the user to evaluate the software for a limited amount of time. After that trial period (usually 15 to 90 days) the user can decide whether to buy the software or not. Even though, most trial software products are only time-limited some also have feature limitations.
Paid
Usually commercial software or games are produced for sale or to serve a commercial purpose.

Кроме того этот формат намного тяжелее джипега, занимает больше места на жестком диске компьютера, и самая досадная мелочь -RAW файлы нельзя просмотреть средствами операционной системы виндовс, проще говоря система их “не видит» а значит для работы требуется установка специальной программы- просмотровщика. Например, если вы обладатель какой либо камеры фирмы «Никон», то это может быть фирменная программа ViewNX 2.
Просмотровщик конечно решает вопрос просмотра, однако у нас есть возможность сделать работу с РАВ файлами еще удобней и комфортней, а поиск нужного кадра быстрым. Для этого нужно всего лишь скачать и установить программу под названием «РАВ кодек». После этого мы получим привычный просмотр миниатюр наших RAW файлов в окне проводника виндовс.

1 Пакет кодеков для фотокамер от Майкрософт
Пожалуй это самое простое и универсальное решение воспользоваться именно этим пакетом. Пакет поддерживает любые рав файлы фотокамер всех фирм и производителей фототехники.
Скачать его можно совершенно бесплатно в центре загрузки на сайте www.microsoft.com. Переходим по ссылке Пакет кодеков для камер Майкрософт, читаем, выбираем разрядность вашей операционной системы и скачиваем пакет кодеков. После этого следует стандартная установка. Кликаем дважды по файлу, соглашаемся со всеми условиями. После установки результат будет виден сразу же. Открыв папку с РАВ файлами, вы увидите что они приняли вид привычных миниатюр.
2 NEF кодек для фотокамер фирмы Никон
Если вы пользуетесь камерой Никон, и форматы других камер вас не интересуют, то вы можете скачать и установить так называемый NEF кодек. На выходе вы получите все то же самое- просмотр миниатюр в окне виндовс, но применительно только для камер фирмы «Никон». Скачать NEF кодек можно бесплатно в центре загрузок на официальном сайте фирмы Никон https://downloadcenter.nikonimglib.com/ru/download/sw/78.html, или по прямой ссылке с яндекс диска СКАЧАТЬ NEF CODEC
3 Canon RAW кодек для камер фирмы «Кэнон»
Такой же рав кодек существует и у Кэнона. Найти его на фирменном сайте у меня не получилось, но скачать его можно на портале LO4D.com по этой ссылке https://canon-raw-codec.en.lo4d.com/
Is there a free NEF codec for Windows 7 64-bit?
NEF is Nikon’s RAW picture file format. The NEF codec allows you to view NEF files in Windows Explorer as any other natively supported image formats such as JPEG and TIFF. If I understand correctly Nickon only distributes the 32-bit version of the codec.
Is this true? If so — is there an free alternative for Windows 7 64-bit?

Microsoft has published a camera codec pack that supports both 32- and 64-bit Windows 7.

No NEF codec but a viewer that can display them, unfortunately not free, you can search google for an older version that is free

I can find no free plugin codec for 64bit
I did find one for a small fee, it is shareware and will install to test. It says it is for 64bit

The 32 bit MSI and 64 bit MSI files that are included in the installer are available for administrators who need more installations options than are available in the Default installer. On 64 bit platforms you should install both 32 bit and 64 bit codecs if you need to support 32 bit applications that use WIC.

This question is quite old. But these days the Nikon software also supports 64 bit. So the problem might be solved by downloading the NEF Codec from the Nikon itself.

Yes I know this is an ancient thread. Today we find ourselves in September 2022. However there are users out there that still use Windows 7. The link provided by @rokdd takes you to Nikon’s current download page for the Nikon NEF codec which no longer supports Windows 7.
I did manage to find a Nikon download «archive» of sorts. It contains software, firmware and drivers from 2009 to present. The url (English) for the last Nikon Windows 7 NEF codec needs to be modified slightly and can be found at

Incredibly, I was searching now for related stuff and found that the last answer of this old question was 2 hours ago… It’s really coincident.
In any case, it won’t work in all setups. For example, I need to open nef files from a D3500 on Windows 7 and the first version of NEF codecs that allows it (in theory), is 1.31.0. So, according with maxxrnb’s official link (thank you, I was only finding 3rd party servers), is from 2017, supporting only Windows 8 and 10, and still no mention D3500. So in my case there are a lack of compatibility. It seems that Nikon are so extreme making the software obsolete.
Anyway, I will try 1.30 (compatible with Win 7), and hopefully will open D3500 NEFs…
