So I am setting up PostgreSQL on my PC by following Jose Portilla’s Course on Udemy and when I had to restore a database by the name of dvdrental. It showed up the message
`Please configure the PostgreSQL Binary Path in the Preferences dialog.
What am I supposed to do now? Any and All Help is Appreciated

- Click Files -> preferences -> Binary path
- ProgresSQL Binary path: c:Program FilesPosgresSQL13bin
- Click right DataBase-> Restore…

I installed PostgreSQL because I need to restore a large .backup file I received for upload to another platform (it’s 38 million rows which was apparently too large for the person to export any other way). When I try to «restore» in pgAdmin 4 I get the message:
Please configure the PostgreSQL Binary Path in the Preferences dialog.
Is this just the path to the PostgreSQL folder? I can’t find documentation on this on the PostgreSQL site. All I can find is:
Use the fields in the Binary paths node to specify paths to the PostgreSQL binary utilities and EnterpriseDB Postgres Advanced Server binary utilities.
Is there an easier way to restore the database other than through pgAdmin?

Configure pgAdmin->Paths->Binary paths and set «PostgreSQL Binary Path» as shown in the screenshot. Depending on your OS and installation details, the binaries may be located elsewhere. Try
`which psql`
from the command line on linux/Unix systems.
A Windows example:
PostgreSQL Binary Path: "C:Program FilesPostgreSQL9.6bin"

- Select «Servers» item.

Enter to local path Postgresql «bin» folder.
- On OSX the path is
/Applications/Postgres.app/Contents/Versions/latest/bin - On Mac OSX Sierra the path was
/Library/PostgreSQL/9.6/bin— I believe this is the default location from the EnterpriseDB installer for 9.6 that automatically installs PgAdmin 4. -
On Linux the path is
/usr/bin

2. Edit the config_distro file

C:Program FilesPostgreSQL13bin - Navigate to the following path:
C:Program FilesPostgreSQL13pgAdmin 4 - Navigate to the runtime directory. If it’s not available, right-click the empty space and expand the New menu and then select Folder. Name it runtime and navigate to it.
- Now paste all the files from the bin directory inside the runtime folder.

Это должен быть каталог , а не отдельный файл. Итак, в Windows это обычно C:Program FilesPostgreSQL9.6bin
В будущих версиях pgAdmin 4 будет такая подсказка:

Откуда появилась проблема?
При попытке обращения к окну «Импорта/Экспорта» в веб-интерфейсе pgAdmin4 появляется проблема. Мы не можем выполнить импорт, из-за отсутствия пути до бинарного файла самого PostgreSQL.
Решение
Теперь нужно понять о каком «двоичном пути» идёт речь.
Заходим в меню «Файл» затем «Настройки»
В окне «Настройки» (Preferences) скролим вниз до пункта «Пути» (Paths). Нажимаем на пункт «Пути программ» (Binary paths).
В открытом окне листаем до «Каталог программ PostgreSQL«.
И видим, что в pgAdmin4 не указан ни один путь до каталога исполняемых файлов СУБД PostgreSQL.
ВНИМАНИЕ!!! Мы установили СУБД PostgreSQL в ОС Debian.
Ниже нам подсказывают:
Enter the directory in which the psql, pg_dump, pg_dumpall, and pg_restore utilities can be found for the corresponding database server version. The default path will be used for server versions that do not have a path specified.

Введите каталог, в котором можно найти утилиты psql, pg_dump, pg_dumpall и pg_restore для соответствующей версии сервера баз данных. Путь по умолчанию будет использоваться для версий сервера, для которых путь не указан.
Мы можем поискать в Debian все места хранения файлов «psql«:
find / -iname "psql"
В ответе:
Нас будет интересовать путь:
/usr/lib/postgresql/14/bin/
Можем сразу проверить содержимое остальных файлов в этой директории:
ls /usr/lib/postgresql/14/bin/
Мы видим, что в этой директории присутствуют все необходимы файлы, о которых просит pgAdmin4.
Вводим путь:
Следующим шагом нужно АКТИВИРОВАТЬ СИНЮЮ ТОЧКУ, которая сейчас серая. Нажимаем на серую точку.
Нажимаем «Сохранить«.
Проверяем работоспособность. Выделяем нужную таблицу.
Переходим к окну «Импорта/Экспорта» в веб-интерфейсе pgAdmin4.
Задача решена! Утилиты подключены!
