Background

macOS security policies are continuously updated, so some users may encounter software that is not distributed by Apple incompatible with macOS. Portable SSD Software included in Samsung Portable SSDs may run into such incompatibility issue.

A «System Extension Blocked» message appears when installing Samsung Portable SSD Software.

“No Samsung Portable SSD is connected.” message appears even though the Samsung Portable SSD Software has been installed on the device running macOS

Troubleshooting Guide

The issues vary depending on the macOS version. If you encounter a problem when running the Samsung Portable SSD software on macOS, please follow the steps below:

1. Check which version of macOS your system is running and whether you have the latest version 1 of the Portable SSD Software (version 1.6.6 or higher).

The latest version of the Portable SSD Software can be found at http://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/download/tools/.
Please note that the software for the T7 Touch and T7 is different from the software for previous generations of portable SSD (T5, X5, and lower).

2. Change software settings in your system running macOS in order to use the software.

Open «Security & Privacy» in the «System Preferences» menu.

Click the «Allow» button next to the message, “System software from developer «Samsung Electronics» was blocked from loading”.

Re-connect your Portable SSD to the device running macOS system and execute the Samsung Portable SSD Software.

3. If the problem continues, delete and re-install the Samsung Portable SSD Software.

4. If the problem does not get resolved even after following the troubleshooting guidelines, please contact an authorized Samsung service center.

Unable to install Samsung NVMe drivers on SAMSUNG 980 PRO 1TB SSD Win10

When I try to install the driver, it says it can’t find it and tells me to plug it in and run the driver again.

I tried installing it both before and after I cloned the drive and running Win10 from the SSD.

I also tried installing the firmware update and it said the same thing.

Currently has Microsoft drivers and shows Standard NVM Express Controller in Device Manager.

I then ran Magician and it said I had the current firmware.

I read where it suggested to change AHCI to IDE and try installing the drivers, but my motherboard only has AHCI and Raid choices.

Has anyone encountered this before? Any suggestions?

Driver and firmware were downloaded from Samsung website today and I verified they were for the 980 Pro.

There is no Samsung NVMe driver for the 980 Pro. At least Samsung hasn’t released any, as it runs fine with the Standard NVMe one.
I personally use the standard one, with no problems whatsoever.

I read some articles and watched some YouTube videos, does it matter that I have it in the M.2_1 socket or does it need to be in the M.2_2 socket?
I only have the one and it’s the boot drive.

Just curious, articles were conflicting.

I’m not sure how it works on AMD or Intel systems with PCIe 4.0, but for my Intel system (PCIe 3.0) I forced installed the Samsung NVMe drivers. I get way better performance with the NVMe drivers. Has anyone else tried this on PCIe Gen 4 systems?

Thanks, I would be leery of force installing the drivers. As they say «if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it». It is performing great so far with no issues. I have PCIe NVMe Gen 4 on my mobo and is working well.

After reading the reply from EncodeGR, I went back to the Samsung website and double checked & there were no drivers for the 980 Pro.

It was my mistake because originally I was going to get the 970 EVO or 970 EVO Plus, then at the last minute I got the 980 Pro.

I had already downloaded the drivers and didn’t realize they were for the 970, 960 & 950 only.

This is what I’m getting, everything looks good so far.

OS requirements : Windows 10 64 bit 1703/RS2/15063.x or more recent.
Hardware requirements : Motherboards with Samsung NVMe SSD.

I have 2 m.2 NVMe ssd in my rig. I have Samsung Magician installed all ready. Do I need to install these drivers, I checked SM to update no no update came up?

If I do install this driver will it mess anything up on my rig?

Thank you for all you do for us here on the rog forums.

Assuming that you’re using PCIe NVMe SSDs and you don’t have them setup In RAID then yes, install the drivers. I’m not sure, but I also thing the answer is «Yes» if you are using SATA NVMe.

I tried installing these drivers on my Z390-E but after reboot the driver version still gives the Microsoft 2006 driver. What am I doing wrong?

Look under Storage Controller and NVME.

Do you NEED to install them, no. They’ll run fine on microsoft ones. But for optimal performance the samsung ones are recommended yes

If I am looking at the specs. correctly, going to a PCIe 4 drive and an 11th generation processor on my Z490 board would almost double the speed of a M.2 drive running as 4x?

I plan on moving to the 11th generation so I can check the performance of my PCIe 4 Video card and a new Pcie 4 drive.. It may be impressive. I have to think Intel decided to go to PCIe4, even though they had been stating it wasn’t a useable performance boost, for some reason. Possibly sales or the license situation for PCIe 4 has changed.

You also need the Samsung drivers so the Magician software can monitor the drive for firmware updates and problems.

You don’t need Samsung NVMe drivers if you use an Samsung NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSD because they currently use the Microsoft NVMe built-in driver.

I haven’t tested the Microsoft version of the driver, stornvme.sys, for a few years but it used to have terrible performance. And as I mentioned, you can’t run the Magician software to benchmark the drive and do firmware updates without using the Samsung driver.

I would not run a Samsung NVMe drive without their driver.. I would not even buy an NVMe drive unless it had an OEM driver..

Make sure we are keeping NVMe drives which are being operated in a SATA environment different from an NVMe drive being operated in its natural environment. The Intel SATA/PCIe Premium driver did vastly improve the performance in a drive being used in SATA configuration. Intel needs to run those drives using a RAID controller so its Optane memory will function correctly.
