In addition to the popular Aero Snap feature, Windows 10 supports a number of classic methods of arranging opened windows. These include the ability to cascade windows, show windows stacked and show windows side by side.
When you are using the Show windows side by side option in Windows 10, all opened non-minimized windows will be shown next to each other. They will be tiled over the Desktop, so you can see all opened windows at once. In a multimonitor configuration, this option changes the layout of windows only on the screen they are visible on. Let’s see how to use this feature.
To show windows side by side in Windows 10, do the following.
- Minimize any open windows that you don’t want to re-arrange side by side. Minimized windows are ignored by this function.
- Right-click an empty area of the taskbar to open its context menu. Here is how it looks.
- In the third group of commands from top, you will see the option «Show windows side by side». Click it.
This is an example of the side-by-side window layout in Windows 10.
If you clicked this context menu item accidentally, there is a quick method to undo the layout. Right click the taskbar once again and select Undo Show all windows side by side from the context menu.

If you work with several open windows, you likely spend a lot of time moving among them. At any given moment, you might have several windows open; a web browser to surf the internet, a mail program to manage email, a couple of applications to perform work, and perhaps even a game or two
Use one of the standard options for switching among them, like Alt+Tab and resizing the open windows, but there’s another option that might suit your needs better: Windows Split Screen.
Instructions in this article apply to Windows 10, Windows 8, and Windows 7.
Split Your Screen in Windows 10 With Snap Assis
There are several ways to split a screen in Windows 10, but the easiest is with Snap Assist. This feature has to be enabled in Start > Settings > System > Multitasking, although it should be enabled by default. Snap Assist lets you drag a window to a corner or side of the screen to “snap” it there, which in turn makes room for other apps to be snapped in the resulting empty screen space.
You can easily stack all the windows side by side by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing Show windows side by side.
If there are several windows open, they’ll all be resized appropriately to fit on the screen.
To split your screen in Windows 10 with Snap Assist using the mouse:
1.Open two or more windows or applications. 2.Place your mouse on an empty area at the top of one of the windows, hold down the left mouse button, and drag the window to the left side of the screen. Move it all the way over, as far as you can go, until your mouse won’t move anymore. 3.Let go of the mouse to snap that window to the left side of the screen. It should now fill half the screen, or the corner if you managed to drag it there. 4.Select any of the other windows that are now open on the right side to snap it to the right side of the screen. 5.Now that the two screens are beside each other, drag the dividing line that separates them to resize both windows simultaneously. This is helpful if you need to see more of one and can manage a smaller view for the other.
You can also use the Windows key + left arrow and Windows key + right arrow to snap windows.
Windows Split Screen in Windows 8 and 8.1
Microsoft assumed with Windows 8 and 8.1 that most people would use a touchscreen device. If you have a touchscreen, use the snap feature to position two windows on the screen at one time using your finger. Otherwise, use a mouse.
Stack all the windows side by side by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing Show windows side by side.
If there are several windows open, they’ll all be resized appropriately to fit on the screen. To use split screen with Windows 8.1:
1.Open two or more windows and/or applications.
2.Place your mouse on an empty area at the top of one of the windows, hold down the left mouse button, and drag the window to the left side of the screen.
Move it all the way over, as far as you can go, until your mouse won’t move anymore.
On a touch screen swipe in from the left and hold your finger on the screen until the second app is docked on the left side of the screen.
3.Let go of the mouse to snap that window to the left side of the screen.
4.Select any of the other windows that are now open on the right side to snap it to the right side of the screen.
5.When you move the line between the apps it resizes only one screen at a time, not both as in Windows 10.
If your screen resolution is high enough and your video card supports it, you can position three apps on the screen.
How to Do Split Screen in Windows 7
Windows 7 was the first version of Windows to support the Snap feature. It was enabled by default.
You can easily stack all the windows side by side by right-clicking the taskbar and choosing Show windows side by side.
If there are several windows open, they’ll all be resized appropriately to fit on the screen. To use the Snap feature in Windows 7 to position two windows side-by-side:
1.Open two windows.
2.Place your mouse in an empty area at the top of any open window, hold down the left mouse button, and drag the window to the left side of the screen, toward the center of that side.
3.Let go of the mouse.
The window will take up half the screen.
4.Repeat Step 2 for the second window, this time dragging to the right before letting go of the mouse button.
The window will take up the other half of the screen.
In Windows 7 you can also use the Windows key and the left or right arrow keys to move windows around.

- You can navigate the Registry Editor by expanding folders using the arrow icon next to their names. Using this, locate the following Registry key: ComputerHKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionSideBySideWinnersx86_policy.9.0.microsoft.vc90.crt_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_none_02d0010672fd82199.0 The second to last entry varies from computer to computer — we used ours as an example. You need to look for an entry with both “9.0” and “crt” in the name.
- If you’re in the correct Registry key, you should be able to see three values: one called Default, then two strings of numbers.
- Check the data value of the Default entry , and ensure that it matches the longer number entry (see the image below.)
- If the Default value isn’t the same as the longest number, double-click on the Default value and manually input the number . Make sure to do this correctly so each number and character matches.
- Close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.
Method 4: Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Packages
To ensure that your issue doesn’t come from damaged or corrupt Visual C++ files, you can easily download and install the latest versions from the official Microsoft website. Click here and install these files, then simply restart your computer to verify if the problem still exists.
Method 5: Perform a System File Checker scan
The System File Checker is a tool available in Windows 10 by default. It’s also called an “SFC scan,” and it’s your quickest way to automatically fix corrupted system files and other issues.
Running this scan has proven to get rid of issues with Windows 10. Here’s what you need to do to run it.
- Press the Windows + R keys on your keyboard. This is going to bring up the Run utility.
- Type in “ cmd ” and press the Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys on your keyboard. Doing so, you’re launching the Command Prompt with administrative permissions.
- If prompted, click Yes to allow the Command Prompt to make changes on your device.
- Once in the Command Prompt, type in the following command and press Enter to execute it: sfc /scannow
- Wait for the SFC scan to finish scanning your computer and repairing corrupt files. This may take a long time; ensure that you don’t close the Command Prompt or shut your computer down.
- Restart your device after the scan is complete.
Method 6: Reset Windows 10
While this is the least desirable option, it can certainly help when dealing with serious system issues. Many users turn to reset Windows 10 in an attempt to get a clean start and fix messy problems that otherwise would require hours and hours of troubleshooting.
Here are the steps to reset Windows 10. You have the option of keeping all of your personal data, but you may also choose to entirely wipe all data and start with a fresh system.
- Click on the Start menu and choose “ Settings .” You can alternatively use the Windows + I keyboard shortcut as well.
- Click on the “ Update & security ” tile.
- Switch to the “ Recovery ” tab.
- You should see a header that says “ Reset this PC .” Simply click on the “ Get started ” button under it.
- Choose whether or not you want to keep personal files. Both options mean that your applications will be removed , but you can easily keep personal documents safe.
- Proceed with the on-screen prompts and reset your PC.

Обратите внимание на значение «По умолчанию» и список версий в значениях ниже.
