General protection fault!
History: UGameEngine::LoadMap

So I got the game for free few days ago from Uplay and started it up yesterday. However, once I’m done with the beginning cutscene with Lambert and Sam, the screen turns to nothingness and I get the message from the title and the game closes.
Tried adding this: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile. /?id=657405247 and http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile. /?id=170119402 and neither fix it as well as tried removing system and textures and reinstalling them and nothing. Setting compatibility mode to XP SM 2 and 3 doesnt work, neither admin mode. Also tried the widescreen fix from here: https://thirteenag.github.io/wfp#sec6 and it doesn’t work neither.
I got the game on an external HDD, 7 months old. Everything else works.
Specs:
ASUS GTX 750 Ti
i5-3450 @ 3.10GHz
8GB RAM
1000GB HDD (the external)
Windows 10 64-bit PRO
The same problem here.
When I start the game everything works well. The main menu starts properly. The first mission starts, but only in a resolution of 640×480, low shadow resolution and low effecs. As soon as I try to confirm any changes, the game crashes by showing the same message given in the title.
Specs:
i7-950 @3.07GHz
Gainward GTX 550Ti
8GB RAM
500GB HDD
Win 7 64Ultimate
Same thing here. Everytime I try to change the settings it crashes. I don’t know why.

Woops, I forgot to tell that I managed to fix this problem an hour after posting this thread. You have to put the textures and system folder name all in caps. Mine was like «Textures» and «System». After I put them in lower caps, I could join the game.
General Protection Fault. History: Blank
Hi. I had the same problem! General Protection Fault. History: Blank. As I understand it, the reasons for such problems may be too much.
Unified, universal solution for all not exist! You need to individually investigate each case.
One of the commands in this file, is copy the files from the folder «supportinst%LANG%» to folder «system», I manually copied three files (SplinterCell.ini; SplinterCellUser.ini; DefConfig_EN.ini) and found in «system» folder was the file «DefConfig_FR.ini» (for French language!).
I replaced it with the file «DefConfig_EN.ini» and problem solved.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction
There are two solutions to solving this issue that I’ve found so far, either enable CD Audio/Stereo Mix in the sound settings in control panel or plug in a headset.
To enable CD Audio/Stereo Mix:
Step 1: Open control panel
Step 2: Go to hardware and sound
Step 3: Click the Sound option
Step 4: Go to the recording tab and right click ‘CD Audio’ or ‘Stereo Mix’ (or both but either one on its own should work) and click enable
Step 5: Click apply and ok
Note: in order to see all of the options in the recording tab you may need to right click anywhere in the recording tab and enable ‘show disabled devices’ and ‘show disconnected devices’.
To plug in a headset:
Step 1: Plug in a headset into the front or back of your PC or laptop
Step 2: The general protection fault crash should no longer happen while the headset is plugged in
Note: this may not work for all users but the other method should work for everyone.

[Splinter Cell 1] General fault protection Error #446
The text was updated successfully, but these errors were encountered:
I only tested with steam version, no idea if uplay version is any different. Do you have the game in program files? Try to upload ‘system’ folder somewhere, so I could try to reproduce the problem or at least compare the files.
I remember that they actually gave away the game for free, so I have it on uplay as well. Just installed it along with widescreen fix, worked straight away for me. However, when I copied your folder, it gives the same error. I tried copying all ini files from the original folder and it worked after that. Seems like SplinterCellUser.ini and SplinterCell.ini is empty in your folder and got corrupted somehow. I recommend reinstalling the game.
I did a clean install of the game like you asked. Applied the fix and still got the same error. I checked the SplinterCellUser.ini and SplinterCell.ini and they are not empty. Those two files in the folder I send you were indeed empty which is weird, but in my folder they are not and it still gives the same error. So I narrowed it down to this:
If I delete SplinterCell.WidescreenFix.asi from the scripts folder the game launches and the correct resolution is applied so that works, but the problem is that the shadows will not work. And if I put SplinterCell.WidescreenFix.asi back in the scripts folder the error pops up again. So maybe its has something to do with that?
Well I fixed it with another method I just used dgVoodoo2 for the broken shadows and the widescreen fix minus that ASI file for the resolution so with some improvisation it works now.
Usually that means exe or some dll is not compatible, but I can’t tell without debugging it. But apart from ini files, your files worked for me just fine. You can try to upload a minidump after the crash: http://dk22pac.blogspot.ru/2013/02/how-to-enable-crash-dumps-dmp-files.html
But I’m leaving now for a week, so will be able to take a look only next week.
Also, you can try to use my ini files in case that’s still the issue.

This has been happening to me recently. I downloaded this fix and it worked perfectly before the recent update. The shadows still work fine for me if I delete SplinterCell.WidescreenFix.asi, seems the HUD just stretches. I reinstalled the steam version a couple times a few days ago, and just tried using your ini files, it yields the same results for me. I’ll still keep playing it, see if anything else is broke, but it’s functional.
Widescreen fix doesn’t fix shadows in any way, that’s what dgvoodoo wrapper does. There was a bit of a change regarding how the fix is loaded in recent update, so if it stopped working for you we need to figure out what goes wrong. Please enable minidumps and send them to me. I’ll check them out next week and then we can dig this problem further.
Also, what windows version are you using? I’m on windows 10 1709.
AwesomeBrando commented May 1, 2018
I tried following that page you posted yesterday. I can’t create a LocalDumps folder in Windows Error Reporting because there’s already one? CrashDumps is looking empty, so is there something else I should do?
I’m on windows 7 64bit, Home Premium Editon.
I guess it’s better to wait for me to come back, I’ll check myself compatibility with win7 and we’ll see what to do then. I’ll be back Sunday.
Okay, I was able to reproduce the issue on windows 7, will check what happens and fix it soon.

It seems that you’re using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don’t work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera
I’m using Windows 8.1, an i5 4590, a GTX 580 and 16 GB RAM
EDIT: Good news, I fixed it! I ran the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP (Service Pack 2 and 3 both work) and now the game runs fine. I’m still having a problem with cutscenes flickering, however, but at least the game is running now and appears to be fine.
I’m currently installing it to see if I have any problem but my system is different from yours.
I do strongly encourage you to open a ticket with support as Window 8 is supported. This way if they can’t help you make it work then you can probably get your money back.
In my experience a GPF, sometime with XP and more often with newer Windows version, strongly (but not always) point to a hardware issue. I haven’t personally experienced a GPF that was not a precursor to a device failure since Windows XP SP2. (I never used an earlier version of XP at home, I used 98SE before that)
OK, it’s started fine on my system with no problem playing the intro movie.
My system:
OS: Windows 7 64 bits
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8300 2.5 GHz
RAM: 8 GB
Sound: Realtek High Definition Audio
Video Card: GEFORCE GTX 650

Have you tried reinstalling the game? Perhaps one of the files was corrupted when you installed it. Also have you downloaded any available patch for Splinter Cell? Are you having problems with any other games?

hi, to cure this go into the system folder located in the main splinter cell folder ,double click on the file DefUser to open it up in notepad.scroll down towards the bottom until you get to the line saying screen resolution.alter this from 640×480 to 800×600 then save it.close everything down and restart the game.it should be ok now.also it might be worth going into your graphics card settings and turning the antialiasing off to get rid of any white lines that appear when you start the game.any other probs contact me. cheers mate peter.

Splinter cell requires you to turn up the colour bit depth to 32 bit ,before you start the game.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction™ Guide
Overview
A guide to fixing the general protection fault crashes.
About the problem
The general protection fault occurs for some users when searching for co-op & multiplayer matches, when disconnecting from a co-op & multiplayer search, when in a co-op & multiplayer match or just while in general gameplay. These fixes should work for most of those who experience the issue.
