I am looking to manage a SQL Server 2008 DB using Management Studio 2005. The reason for this is because our server is a 64-bit machine and we only have the 64-bit version of the software.
Is this possible?
How about managing a SQL Server 2005 DB using Management Studio 2008?

UPDATE: You can use Cumulative update package 5 for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 to connect to 2008.

The other question you asked was about managing 2005 servers with SSMS 2008 — and yes, you can do that. SSMS 2008 can manage 2008, 2005, 2000. I actually recommend that everybody use the latest SSMS 2008 client regardless of what server they’re connecting to, because it has some nice perks and upgrades that work with all server versions that you connect to.
Be aware that SSMS 2008 has IntelliSense, but only when you connect to a SQL 2008 server. If you connect to a 2005 server, you don’t get IntelliSense.

I’m posting this to prevent people getting false hope (as I did). Where as you may be able to use SQL Server 2005 Management Studio to connect to SQL Server 2008, you cannot use SQL Server 2005 Management Studio Express. You get an explicit error message stating:
This version of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express can only be used to connect to SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 servers. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionDlg)
Hopefully that will prevent a couple of people from wasting their time trying just-in-case.

unless I’m mistaken and things have changed, you cannot use sql server 2008 to save a backup which restores to sql server 2005. I found this out the hard way

Hello,
I have had to install SQL Server 2005 (x64) on a server running Windows Server 2008 R2. The install succeeds apart from the client tools (BIDS and SSMS). Are the client tools compatible with the operating system?

Andrew

Hello Alberto,
I’ve installed the 32-bit version of the software on the server with no issues. The summary file did not have any record of the failure of the client tools, just the succeeded records of the other components.
When you say that SP3 is needed, does this need to be installed immediately after the SQL installation?
Here’s the summary file:-

Hello,
As long as I remember, client tools are 32-bit only. This means you have it already installed.

FAQs
Is SQL Server the same as SSMS?
SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) is a tool that allows you to create and manage SQL databases, whereas an SQL Server is a database designed to manage and store information. SSMS is included in Microsoft SQL Servers.
Can I use SSMS without SQL Server?
Yes, you can use SQL Server Management Studio without the server itself. This way you can manage and control on-premises SQL databases as well as on-cloud databases.

Hello,
How can I get SQL Server Management Studio 2005 Express to connect to SQL Server 2008 Express databases?
When I try, an error dialog says «This version of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express can only be used to connect to SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server 2005 servers. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionDlg)»
Thanks in advance.

You can’t use SQL 2005 management studio to connect SQL 2008. In simple you can use SQL client tools to connect lower version of SQL and not higher higher version. You need to download SSMSE for SQL 2008, check out the link below

Setting File Security
SQL 2005 Reporting Service
Setting File Security
<EndFunc Name=’SetCAContext’ Return=’T’ GetLastError=’203′>
Doing Action: Write_sqlRegSDDL
PerfTime Start: Write_sqlRegSDDL : Tue Feb 24 15:00:07 2009

SimonS Blog on SQL Server Stuff — SQL 2005 install hangs on «Setting File Security»
MS KB 938245 — How to install and how to configure SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008
SQL Server 2005 Books Online (November 2008) — How to: Install and Configure Reporting Services on Windows Server 2008
The SQL Server FullText Search (MSSQLSERVER) service depends the following service: NTLMSSP. This service might not be installed.
1) В системном реестре отключить зависимость от службы NTLMSSP: Найти в системном реестре ключ HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetServicesmsftesqlDependOnService
Замечено что после установки SP3 на SQL Server 2005 может перестать автоматически стартовать служба SQL Server Reporting Services, а при попытке стартовать службу вручную мы получим ошибку с описанием типа «Error 1053: The Service did not respond to start or control request in a timely fashion«.
В системном реестре находим ветку HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControl

SQL 2005 Reporting Service
Handler Mappings.
Execute.

April 18, 2008 by decoding
Today at work, I had the chance to configure a brand new HP ProLiant ML350 G5 server.
The machine came with Microsoft’s latest flavor of server operating systems, Windows Server 2008.
Windows Server 2008 installation was really fast and easy, reminding of Windows Vista setup.
When time came to install SQL Server 2005 the first real problem with Windows Server 2008 has emerged.
The SQL Server 2005 edition was the Workgroup edition, but I suppose that the Standard edition would most probably have the same problem.
When starting the installation of SQL Server, there was a prompt saying that this piece of software was incompatible with the operating system.
However, the installation could continue, and all setup options were selected and successfully installed.
According to Microsoft, SQL Server 2005 requires Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 (SP2) to run on Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista SP1. And the full release version of SQL Server 2005 has to be first installed before the SP2 can be applied.
Thus, the next step was to install SQL Server 2005 SP2.
Installation of SP2 was successful, but no SQL Server Services existed, and no database engine has been installed.
A quick Google search pointed to a Microsoft’s Knowledge Base page, KB950636, and a potential hotfix.
And this hotfix must have saved the day!
After the installation of the hotfix, SQL Server 2005 was uninstalled, and server rebooted.
Started the SQL Server 2005 for a second time, and this time, more setup options were available.
Also the wizard for the database configuration appeared, which was a good sign, as it wasn’t present on the first attempt.
Finished, applied SP2, and this little adventure ended successfully.
SQL Server 2005 was then working just fine.

This guides main purpose is to help you install SQL 2005 SP2 standard edition on Windows Server 2008 (while we wait for SQL 2008).
Part 1. Install SQL Server 2005 standard edition
The screenshots for this guide were taken from a Windows Server 2008 which had been preinstalled and configured with AD, DHCP, DNS, WDS
Insert the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition DVD (or mount the ISO available on MSDN called en_sql_2005_std_x86_dvd.iso) using Daemon tools or similar.
When the splash screen appears, choose the Server components, tools, Books Online, and Samples choice under the Install menu.
depening on your version of Windows Server, you may get a warning about known combatibility issues as below, but that’s safe to ignore as we will be upgrading this install to Service Pack 2 as part of the process.
Click on Run program and accept the licensing aggreement…
you’ll be informed that setup has to install some prerequisites (Microsoft SQL Native Client and Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup Support Files)
click install to continue
once installed click next to continue
next you’ll see a window system configuration check, but behind it is the actual SQL Server Setup Wizard,
in the Welcome to the Microsoft SQL Server installation Wizard, click next
if you get a warning that IIS is not installed, ignore it for now as we will install it later.

IIS Feature Requirement
Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) is either not installed or is disabled. IIS is required by some SQL Server features. Without IIS, some SQL Server features will not be available for installation. To install all SQL Server features, install IIS from Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel or enable the IIS service through the Control Panel if it is already installed, and then run SQL Server Setup again. For a list of features that depend on IIS, see Features Supported by Editions of SQL Server in Books Online.
If you get the IIS warning, click next to continue then cancel out of the SQL setup and follow this guide to install IIS 7 in Windows Server 2008
Once you have IIS installed, re-run the Microsoft SQL Server installation Wizard. If you get the IIS error again, ignore it and click next to continue
review the registration info and click next to continue
in the components to install screen select all options
click next to continue and choose Default Instance
on the next screen enter your administrator password for the SQL Server Service,
click next and note the warning, for the remaining services we will use the local system account
select local system account for the remaining services like this (you’ll see the above warning each time until all three are configured to use the local system account…. namely SQL Server Agent, Analysis Services and SQL Browser
leave the authentication mode as it is (Windows Authentication Mode)
set the collation settings as follows
leave the Error and Usage report settings as they are and click next…
review the summary
and click Install to continue
this will take some time, so now is a good time for a coffee break…
after a long time you may see the following Visual Studio 2005 warning, click on Run Program to continue
we can resolve it later by doing as quoted here
Download updates for Visual Studio 2005
This problem was caused by a compatibility issue between this version of Windows and this version of Visual Studio 2005. This program was created by Microsoft.
Solution
———————————————————————————
To solve this problem, go online and install the following updates:
Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1
Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 Update for Windows Vista
however, as we will be upgrading SQL 2005 to SQL 2005 SP2, we will ignore this for now…
when the Setup Progess is done, click on next
review the summary
and click finish and then reboot the server.

Supported SQL Server versions
This version of SSMS works with all supported versions of SQL Server (SQL Server 2008 — SQL Server 2017), and provides the greatest level of support for working with the latest cloud features in Azure SQL Database, and Azure SQL Data Warehouse.
There is no explicit block for SQL Server 2000 or SQL Server 2005, but some features may not work properly.
Additionally, SSMS 17.x can be installed side-by-side with SSMS 16.X or SQL Server 2014 SSMS and earlier.
Supported Operating systems
This release of SSMS 17.x Version supports the following platforms when used with the latest available service pack: Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 7 (SP1), Windows Server 2016, Windows Server 2012 (64-bit), Windows Server 2012 R2 (64-bit), Windows Server 2008 R2 (64-bit)
SSMS 18.x is not supported on Windows 8. Windows 10 / Windows Server 2016 requires version 1607 (10.0.14393) or later:
Due to the new dependency on NetFx 4.7.2, SSMS 18.0 does not install on Windows 8, older versions of Windows 10, and Windows Server 2016. SSMS setup will block on those operating systems. Windows 8.1 is still supported.
SSMS Version Notes
SSMS 17.X is based on the Visual Studio 2015 Isolated shell, which was released before Windows Server 2016.
Microsoft takes app compatibility very seriously and ensures that already-shipped applications continue to run on the latest Windows releases.
Because of this, we do not anticipate that SSMS with all latest updates applied) will encounter issues when running on Windows Server 2016.
Customers are advised to contact support, should they encounter any issues with SSMS on Windows Server 2016.
Support will then work with customers to determine if the issue is with SSMS or Visual Studio or with Windows compatibility, and route the issue appropriately.
SSMS 18.x is based on the new Visual Studio 2017 Isolated Shell: The new shell unlocks all the accessibility fixes that went in to both SSMS and Visual Studio.
