Update: My problem is resovled. Got an email from MS support suggesting a «Clean Boot»:

Quoting from the email:

Install Windows Vista SP1 in Clean Boot mode
========================================
Please disable all startup items and third party services when booting to avoid conflict when installing Vista SP1:

1. Click «Start», type: MSCONFIG in the search box and press Enter.

Note: Please click «Continue» if the «User Account Control» window pops up.

2. Click «Services», check the «Hide All Microsoft Services» box and click «Disable All» (if it is not gray).
3. Click «Startup», click «Disable All» and click «OK».

Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn’t affect the system or other programs. We can manually run these programs later.

4. Please double click the downloaded Windows Vista Service Pack 1 Standalone Installer and follow the instructions to install Windows Vista SP1.

To restore the computer to use a Normal Startup, repeat step 1 above. Then click «Normal Startup» on the General tab, click «OK», and then restart the computer.

They also suggested downloading the standalone patch which I had already done.

Hope this works for you too. My guess is that something being loaded was causing a reboot before step 2 was completed. that seems to be a problem. Unplug/unload everything!

Thanks for your update, Rich. I’m glad you’ve got your stuff working. Unfortunately my PC is in a state that it won’t boot to a point that I can use MSCONFIG. Hopefully the Microsoft techs will come up with something, or else I’ll have to reinstall everything on a different drive.

I was in that same situation, but I did find some way to make the «Startup Repair» option actually rollback to before the SP1 patch started.

This worked for me, but it may not for you. If you’re facing a restore/reinstall, you might give this a try.

1) Reboot and press F8 to the startup menu

2) Selet «Repair Your Computer» option

3) Select the last option «Command Prompt» on Sytem Recovery Options screen

5) CD WindowsSystem32

9) Restart again..hitting F8 to get to the Startup menu

10) select «Repair Your Computer»

11) Select the 1st option «Startup Repair»

This should cause the rollback using the Restore point created at the beginning of SP1 started.

I had this issue on my HP HDX9200 latpop (4GB ram Vista 64bit Ultimate) back in April

I have this error too. I tried disabling all startup services / software as per the recommendations above. Same result (failed install, STOP c0000139 etc). My sytem is Vista Ultimate x64 running RAID0 and 6GB RAM.

After five unsuccesful attempts with various permutations of service pack (Windows update and full download), I am VERY grateful for having Acronis image restores to hand. Even with Acronis, a full restore takes

9 hours but at least it provides me wth a working system again.

I have had to disable Windows update as SP1 is being forced at the moment.

In a support email (below) from Microsoft, they suggest installing SP1 in Safe mode. I have yet to try this as I can’t afford more time out of my working week investigating MS bugs for them.

I have posted this on my blog and will update it with the results of trying this as & when time permits.

As per the problem description enclosed/logged in the case, the issue that you are facing is with the installation of the windows updates and in a no boot situation.

Please follow the steps mentioned below which can help us resolve/diagnose the cause of the issue.

ACTION PLAN: Unable to boot to the desktop after the installation of 3 updates.

Method 1: Boot to the Windows DVD and choose the repair Vista option

Note: If your computer came with Vista preinstalled your computer may not come with a Windows DVD. If you do not have a Windows DVD proceed to method 2.

1. Boot to the Windows DVD
2. Choose the repair option in the lower left hand corner and then choose System Restore
3. Use the System Restore to roll the machine to a previous check point when it was working fine.
4. Refer to the steps in the more information section to install to manually install the Update for Windows Vista for x64-based Systems (KB937287) and ensure this issue is avoided in the future.

Method 2: boot to the Safe Mode and use the repair or System Restore feature

1. Boot to the Safe Mode options using F8 during startup
2. Check for a option for repair or use System Restore. Repair or use System Restore.
3. Refer to the steps in the more information section to install to manually install the Update for Windows Vista for (KB937287) and ensure this issue is avoided in the future.

Things to remember before the installation of the windows vista SP1 update are:

1) Backup all the important data on your computer.

2) Uninstall the security/antivirus programs from the computer.

3) Unplug all other devices except the keyboard mouse and the monitor from the computer.

4) Check if you have enough space on your computer to install the service pack 1 and for the creation of a new system restore check point which is automatically created before the installation of the Vista Sp1.

Rename the pending.xml file.

To rename the Pending.xml file and to edit the registry, follow these steps:

Insert the Windows Vista installation disc in the DVD drive, and then restart the computer.

Press any key when you are prompted to restart from the disc.

When you are prompted, configure the Language to install, Time and currency format, and Keyboard or input method options that you want, and then click Next.

On the Install Windows page, click Repair your computer.

On the System Recovery Options page, click the version of the Windows Vista operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.

On the System Recovery Options page, click Command Prompt.

Type cd C:windowswinsxs, and then press ENTER.

Type ren pending.xml pending.old, and then press ENTER.

Type regedit, and then press ENTER.

On the File menu, click Load Hive.

Locate the following folder:

When you are prompted for a name, type Offline_Components.

In Registry Editor, locate and then delete the following registry subkey:

HLKMOffline ComponentsAdvancedInstallersNe edResolving

In Registry Editor, locate and then delete the following registry subkey:

Exit Registry Editor, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Information to help to boot in safe mode:

Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.

Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears with the up and down arrow keys on keyboard, and then press ENTER.
