Best Overall: Bitdefender Antivirus Plus

Bitdefender

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus is an award-winning antivirus application that works very well with Windows 10 computers. It has very little drain on resources, so even when a virus scan is in progress it’s barely noticeable that it’s working.

Bitdefender Plus protects your computer in a number of ways. Virus definitions are regularly updated, so as you would expect, you’re protected even from the newest malware threats. But Bitdefender also includes multi-layer ransomware protection and includes a personal VPN that lets you surf the web anonymously, without being tracked. A password manager, online payment protection, social network protection, and rescue mode round out a well-chosen set of many security tools.

Bitdefender Plus allows for a 30-day free trial, and the base annual subscription costs around $50 per year. That base subscription supports up to three devices, but a slight price increase will up that to 5 or 10 devices depending on your needs.

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus is available for Windows 10, 8.1, 8, and Windows 7 (SP1). It does not support macOS, Android, or iOS, but other versions of the Bitdefender product are available to support devices running those platforms.

Best Award-Winning Protection: Kaspersky Total Security

Kaspersky

Kaspersky is one of the best-known names in internet security for a variety of reasons, but the best one is for the number of awards Kaspersky has won for its Total Security internet security product. As you would expect, Total Security does antivirus and malware very well, but it also includes loads of additional security features.

One nice benefit of Kaspersky Total Protection that you may not find with some of the other antivirus applications on this list is the two-way firewall included in the Total Protection package. This ensures that the perimeter of your system is completely protected both for incoming and outgoing traffic. Additional, Kaspersky Total security offers webcam protection, a VPN, exploit prevention, password protection, a file shredder, and many more features you may not expect to find on a mid-range antivirus product.

Kaspersky Total Security costs around $50 per year and offers protection on up to five devices. You can increase that 10 devices for a slight bump in cost. It supports Windows 10, 8.7 and 8.1; macOS X 10.12 or higher, Android 5.0 or higher, and iOS 12.0 or higher.

Best Free: Microsoft Windows Defender

Windows Defender

Microsoft Windows Defender Security Center comes pre-installed on Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, but it is much improved over past versions of Windows Defender. It offers very good antivirus and antimalware protection, but also includes a firewall, a secure boot feature, and heuristic monitoring that takes note when something seems out of the ordinary on your computer.

Of course, Windows Defender offers real-time definition-based antivirus protection for viruses, malware, trojans, ransomware, and other threats. Also available are parental controls and scanning for USB drives, external hard drives, and disk drives. Windows Defender’s usability is also greatly improved, with a graphical user interface that is easy to navigate and includes explanations for first-time users and those not familiar with what should be protected or why. Advanced users can tweak capabilities for the antivirus scanning and firewall, and even make changes at the registry level to gain greater control of their Windows PC.

Windows Defender has been known to frequently catch JavaScript and other programming code as false positives for security threats. But that one flaw aside, Windows Defender Security System is a great free option for a PC that might otherwise remain unprotected.

Best for Easy Navigation: Trend Micro Maximum Security

Trend Micro

Trend Micro is a name that is more often associated with business antivirus and security products, but the company does offer a host of personal antivirus applications, too. Trend Micro Maximum Security is one of the top-of-line offerings designed to keep your computer safe from viruses and all manner of internet threats.

Maximum security is very easy to navigate and offers the antivirus scanning you would expect, as well as many other features such as e-mail scanning. Password protection, ransomware protection, and parental controls. The most exciting features that Maximum Security offers, however, are the cloud protection scanning, which scans Microsoft and PDF documents in your cloud storage accounts and the social media privacy controls. Unfortunately, you won’t get a firewall with this security suite.

An annual subscription for Trend Micro Maximum Security is on the low-end of the price scale, coming in at around $40 for up to five devices and a very modest jump in price will get you protection for up to 10 devices. The security suite also works for Microsoft Windows 10, 8.1, and 7 (SP1 or higher), as well as for macOS 10.12 to 10.14 or higher, Android4.1 or later, and iOS 9 or later.

Best Alternative Free Antivirus: Avast Free Antivirus

Avast Free

Avast Free Antivirus is a full-service antivirus that protects users from viruses, malware, trojans, and other types of attacks. It won the 2018 Product of the year award from AV-Comparatives and consistently tests high in the AVTest Best Antivirus Software for Windows Home Users category.

Aside from being very easy to navigate, one aspect of Avast Free Antivirus we really liked during testing is the ability to download, install, and use the application without having to provide any kind of personally-identifying information, including an email address. The security provided by the application is also top-of-the-line considering it’s a free product. Avast provides definition-based scanning as well as heuristic monitoring, ransomware detection, and a Gaming Mode for distraction-free gaming and streaming. Avast Free Antivirus also includes some premium-level features like a Wi-Fi scanner and a password vault.

Avast is available for Windows 10, 8.1, 8, 7 (SP1 or higher) Vista, and XP (SP3 or higher); macOS 10.11 (El Capitan) or later, iOS 12.0 or later, and Android 4.1 Android 6.0 (Marshmallow, API 23) or higher.

Avast Free Antivirus Review

Best for Older Windows Computers: F-Secure SAFE Antivirus

F-secure

F-Secure SAFE may not be an antivirus product that you’re familiar with, but don’t let that fool you. The application preforms consistently best-in-class on all categories of AV-Test. It’s easy to use, offers great protection from viruses, malware, and other internet threats, and it causes very little system drag, even during complete scans.

You won’t find a lot of bells and whistles with F-Secure SAFE; it does a good job with antivirus protection, protecting you while you’re surfing or shopping online, and provides ransomware protection and parental controls. There’s not much more to it than that. Where F-Secure wins, however, is in its ability to run nearly seamlessly on older Windows computers. And while it works beautifully on Windows 10 computers, it doesn’t devour system resources, so even users running older Windows 7 (SP1) computers won’t encounter lots of difficulties with conflicts and other system issues when F-Secure SAFE is installed.

F-Secure SAFE is also a very affordable antivirus application. For around $40, users can get 12 months protection for up to three devices, but there are also plans for five or seven devices if you need to add more computers. And additional platforms supported include macOS 10.15 (Catalina) or later, iOS 13 or later, Android 6.0 or later. Unfortunately, ARM-based tablets are not supported.

Best for Deeper Protection: Norton 360 With LifeLock Select

Norton

Symantec’s Norton products are nearly synonymous with antivirus protection; the company has been around for a long while. So, it’s no surprise that when it comes to the complete, deeper protection that some internet users desire, Norton has an answer in the Norton 360 with LifeLock Select product. This product is everything you need to protect your computers and devices from viruses, malware, and internet threats, including identity theft.

Aside from the normal antivirus protection, you would expect from any Norton product, Norton 360 with LifeLock Select offers a secure VPN, credit monitoring, and 100GB cloud backup capabilities. 360 with LifeLock Select also provides Dark Web Monitoring, webcam security, social security number and credit alerts, and a host of additional features. For users who want to know that not only are they protected from viruses and malware, but also from other threats they could encounter, this is a full-service package that offers nearly everything you could ever need.

Of course, with this kind of protection comes a much higher price tag than some of the other products in this list. Users can pay monthly, for around $10 a month or a yearly subscription costs around $100 per month, and the subscription includes up to five devices, including Windows computers, Mac computers, smartphones, and tablets.

Best for Multiple Windows Computers: McAfee Total Protection

McAfee

In the past, McAfee had a reputation for being a not-so-great option for antivirus protection on Windows computers. That’s because McAfee constantly conflicted with various aspects of the operating system. Those times are gone. Since 2016, McAfee has been steadily improving and now works great with Windows 10 and other Windows versions.

That’s great, because McAfee Total Protection offers an excellent suite of protection products that include antivirus, ransomware protection, a file shredder, a firewall, network monitoring, plus a password manager. Add in identity theft protection and parental controls, and you have a well-rounded antivirus application designed to keep you safe from any threat you may encounter online or through e-mail.

Subscriptions for McAfee Total Protection can be a little confusing because you’ll pay almost as much for a single license as you will a license that covers 10 devices. The higher subscription level is around $45 per month and the lower is around $35. There’s also a mid-tier subscription level, which covers five devices, but we think the extra cost of the 10-license package is with an extra $10 per month because the lower two tiers don’t include all the features that are available for McAfee Total Protection. And since McAfee also works on a variety of devices, including Microsoft Windows 10, 8.1, 8, and 7 (SP1), macOS X 10.12 or later, Android 4.1 or higher, and iOS 10 or later, 10 licenses will disappear very quickly.

McAfee Review

Best for No System Lag: AVG Internet Security

AVG

AVG Internet Security is the first-tier antivirus application provided by AVG. A step above the AVG Antivirus free application, AVG Internet Security offers great protection against viruses, malware, Trojans, and other internet security threats.

In addition to the usual quick scan and full scan capabilities that you’ll find with most antivirus applications, AVG Internet Security also offers easy-to-use scans for USB and DVD drives, individual files and folders, and e-mail messages and file attachments. Of course, you’ll also find the usual ransomware protection and privacy protection capabilities, but AVG Internet Security also includes an Enhanced Firewall and webcam protection.

The one pitfall to using AVG Internet Security is the constant, persistent attempts to get you to upgrade to the higher AVG offering, AVG Ultimate.

At around $70 per year, AVG is a little on the expensive side, and you must declare the number of devices you intend to use the application on during the purchase process. However, AVG Internet Security is supported on Windows 10; Windows 10, 8, and 7, and there are also apps available for macOS and Android devices.

1. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus

The best antivirus program you can download for Windows 10

Specifications

Maximum devices covered: 10

Stand out features: Safepay banking protection, Wi-Fi Security Advisor, web protection

Reasons to buy

+

Superb antivirus engine

+

Loads of features

+

Impressive user-friendly

Reasons to avoid

 Minor ransomware clean-up niggles

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus delivers excellent antivirus protection for Windows 10 PCs, regularly being the top performer with independent antivirus testing labs. One of those big-name labs, AV-Comparatives, crowned Bitdefender as one of the ‘Outstanding Products of 2021’ in its year-end summary, and Bitdefender performed flawlessly in the lab’s latest real-world protection test, blocking 100% of threats with few false positives to boot.

As well as this superb core antivirus engine, you get very capable anti-ransomware protection, and Bitdefender Antivirus Plus is one of the best products out there when it comes to blocking malicious websites on Windows machines.

The package delivers a range of other features, including Safepay, a well-designed and fully secure browser with which you can carry out sensitive tasks like online banking – this is definitely a highlight of the suite. Plus there’s a password manager, vulnerability scanner, and a Wi-Fi Security Advisor which evaluates any wireless networks you use to pick up on any potential security issues. Oh, and a VPN is in here too, albeit a very limited service giving you just 200MB of daily traffic.

While it’s easy to use for beginners, Antivirus Plus also offers some nifty more in-depth settings, like being able to set up profiles to, for example, keep any background activity to a minimum when you’re on a laptop using battery power. In the past, Bitdefender has been a bit more resource-hungry than some antivirus apps, but these days, it runs with far less impact on system performance and does better than most rival products in this respect.

You get very capable anti-ransomware protection, albeit with a minor caveat. Namely that in our testing, we found that Bitdefender didn’t quarantine our simulated ransomware threat (though it did block this malware every time we ran it – so this made no practical difference to the defenses provided, and we remained perfectly safe).

But to sum up, this is a well-featured package with some very smart touches and, the icing on this malware-busting cake, is that it’s good value for money — particularly considering everything you get here.

For those who want more features still, there’s also a top-end package, Bitdefender Total Security, which is worth considering, adding functionality like PC maintenance tools (and bonus mobile apps that could come in handy). With discounts, this flagship product can work out as not much more expensive than Bitdefender Antivirus Plus – at least for the initial year of the subscription – so could be well worth a shot for some users.

2. Norton AntiVirus Plus

Top-quality Windows 10 antivirus that keeps you well-informed

Specifications

Maximum devices covered: 1

Stand out features: Intelligent firewall, PC maintenance features, backup tool, Norton Insight

Reasons to buy

+

Great web protection

+

Many useful tools beyond just antivirus

+

Includes backup option

Reasons to avoid

Uses more resources than some rivals

Norton AntiVirus Plus gives you coverage for just one PC, but if you only have a single Windows 10 computer that needs protecting from online threats, then it’s a sterling option for many good reasons.

The core malware protection provided is among the best in the business, the slight caveat being that Norton does tend to produce a few more false positive detections than most in independent lab testing. It’s also worth bearing in mind that this package offers a novel touch for more tech-savvy types in the form of the Norton Insight tool, which gauges the reputation of any given file on your system helps pinpoint more obscure threats.

Furthermore, on the web, Norton AntiVirus Plus does a great job of blocking malicious sites, and you also get the Norton Smart Firewall that keeps you well-informed on any potential risks to your computer.

Bonus features include a password manager, useful PC maintenance and performance monitoring utilities, and a backup tool, which is an unusual inclusion for an entry-level antivirus. While the latter is limited to 2GB of online space, it can also be configured to back up files locally – and it’s commendably user-friendly.

Norton’s interface might be a little odd and quirky, and we found it was a bit heavier in terms of system resource usage than the average antivirus app. That said, other tests (by the independent labs) peg it as a middling performer in the latter department, and Norton AntiVirus Plus undoubtedly remains a great choice for those who simply want to protect their own Windows 10 PC and no other devices.

If you do want to cover more devices, look at Norton 360 Deluxe which defends up to five pieces of hardware, and delivers further security benefits including an integrated VPN

3. Avast One

Great all-rounder providing strong Windows protection and much more

Specifications

Maximum devices covered: 5 (30 with Family plan)

Stand out features: URL blocking, VPN, Sensitive Data Shield, Software Updater

Reasons to buy

+

Strong antivirus and web protection

Lots of features and high-quality extras

+

Little-to-no impact on system performance

Reasons to avoid

VPN isn’t the speediest or best

Avast One is the firm’s new(ish) all-in-one security package which delivers antivirus protection and a host of other benefits besides, including a built-in VPN service.

The Avast One Individual package covers five devices, and its antivirus engine is well-rated by the independent test labs, scoring highly in recent history and placing among the top-ranked vendors. On top of that, you get an added layer of solid ransomware defenses, alongside excellent URL blocking skills to protect your web browsing.

This internet security suite isn’t just about antivirus, though, as it sports a bunch of other security extras including that VPN. It offers unlimited data and is suitably robust (powered by HideMyAss!), even if it isn’t the fastest one out there — Bitdefender’s integrated effort is far quicker, for example, albeit it a much more limited service.

Avast One also has a software updater feature which is better implemented than most, along with webcam protection, plus a bunch of privacy tools including a Sensitive Data Shield that automatically finds files that might contain sensitive data, like names, addresses, or financial details, and stops anyone else using your device from accessing them. Furthermore, some PC maintenance tools are present, including a disk cleaner and performance booster (although the latter, and another module, the driver updater, need to be used with some caution, as we discuss in our full Avast One review).

Another positive facet here is that Avast One takes up very little in the way of resources, and indeed we found that it didn’t slow down our test PC one bit when reviewing the package (your mileage could vary, of course). It doesn’t hurt that Avast has really worked hard to polish the interface and make this product easy to use, too.

Overall, this is a well-rounded package, and while it’s not top of the field in some areas, Avast One is consistently strong enough across the board, providing a lot of features to make it a compelling buy. Also worth remembering is that if you want more devices covered than five, you get a beefy 30 pieces of hardware on the higher-tier Family plan.

4. Trend Micro Antivirus+ Security

Commendable beginner-friendly Windows antivirus

Specifications

Maximum devices covered: 1

Stand out features: Ransomware monitoring, Pay Guard banking protection, high-quality URL filtering

Reasons to buy

+

Impressively user-friendly

+

Folder Shield anti-ransomware layer

+

Good antivirus engine and surfing protection

Reasons to avoid

Not very configurable

Doesn’t have that many features

Trend Micro’s entry-level Windows 10 antivirus is another product which is designed for a single PC. Indeed, this baseline package is Windows-only, although there’s a separate app for Macs – and coverage for multiple devices via a flagship security suite, which we’ll come back to.

One of the major strengths of Trend Micro Antivirus Plus is that it puts an emphasis on making things easy for novice PC users, avoiding jargon, for example, and explaining choices and settings in plain language. But while this is an easy to use suite, and a great choice for the less tech-savvy, more demanding users will probably want to steer away due to the lack of configurability and options available.

This product also benefits from a very good quality antivirus engine, with Trend Micro being one of the top performers going by the rankings from the independent test labs. That said, one slight weakness is more false positives, or errant detections of malware, occurring compared to the average antivirus.

Antivirus+ also delivers strong ransomware protection, with a dedicated Folder Shield that could help block even undiscovered ransomware trying to compromise your PC.

While Trend Micro Antivirus+ is rather heavy in terms of resource usage compared to rivals, overall it’s a high-quality antivirus package. True, it’s not loaded with features, but you do get impressive URL filtering and anti-phishing tech, plus a Pay Guard feature to keep your online banking secure.

Those wanting more features and coverage across multiple devices (or different platforms) should look at Trend Micro Maximum Security, which supports up to 10 devices (Windows, Mac, Android or iOS), adding a secure file vault and password manager into the mix.

5. Microsoft Defender

Yes, Windows 10’s built-in antivirus is now good enough to rely on

Specifications

Maximum devices covered: Unlimited (included free with Windows 10)

Stand out features: URL blocking, parental controls

Reasons to buy

+

It’s free

+

Minimal effort option as it’s built into Windows 10

+

Solid enough antivirus protection

Reasons to avoid

Hardly any features

Microsoft Defender is the built-in antivirus that comes with Windows 10 to be used as a default option if you don’t want to take the trouble to search for one yourself. While you might assume that it isn’t very high-quality as a result – and indeed Windows Defender, as it used to be known, was a questionable offering in the not-so-distant past – this antivirus is now a solid offering.

Indeed, it’s better than some of the big-name competition out there, and Microsoft Defender scored top marks in a recent evaluation by AV-Test, as well as being one of the middling performers in testing done by the other major independent lab AV-Comparatives.

Its defenses are robust enough, then, but bear in mind that what you don’t get is much in the way of features. Microsoft Defender is about the antivirus essentials only, complete with just a few extras: a basic firewall, URL blocking to keep you safer online, and some limited parental control options (which are Edge-only on the browser front).

If you want more than just the basics, and if you need top-notch protection, then you’ll be better served considering one of the above products – but that said, Microsoft Defender represents a reliable enough option now, and you can trust it to be true to its name and defend your PC. Defender offers the advantage of being free, and a no-hassle solution, already being there, on-tap, in Windows 10.

Editor’s note: Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows used to appear on this list. Considering the current climate however, we’ve taken the decision to remove the provider. Although much of the company’s core processes are now take place in Switzerland, the fact that its headquarters remain in Moscow and there have been previous allegations around government coercion, it feels prudent to use the provider with caution. And, when there are so many other excellent providers to choose from, it’s impossible to whole-heartedly recommend Kaspersky at this time.

Is Microsoft Defender good enough to secure Windows 10?

It used to be the case that Windows suffered badly from security vulnerabilities and malware attacks that only third-party Windows 10 antivirus software could protect against. However, over the years Microsoft has made a concerted effort to improve the security of Windows, not least with the inclusion of Microsoft Defender by default in Windows 10.

That said, in the past, Defender (formerly known as Windows Defender) has been regarded as a fairly poor security solution, and simply a ‘better than nothing’ option. That isn’t true anymore, though: in fact, Defender now holds its own. One independent antivirus testing lab, AV-Test, rates Microsoft’s solution highly.

And of course Defender has the added advantage of being a hassle-free solution which comes already integrated with Windows 10, and it’s free. If you just want basic protection which works, Defender is all you need.

However, the additional security and privacy features that other third-party antivirus apps provide can make them very attractive choices in their own right.

Your system is secure with Defender, but if you want added peace of mind, it’s likely worth investing in the additional protection – the top-rated antivirus engines, extra anti-ransomware capabilities and other features – that Bitdefender Antivirus Plus (opens in new tab) and the other best Windows 10 antivirus packages afford.

Should I get free or premium antivirus?

If you’re simply looking to protect your PC from viruses, trojans, and worms, then free Windows 10 antivirus from any reputable provider, will keep you protected against these.

The difference with paid-for versions is that they add additional features that aim to protect tighter security, better privacy protections, and even tune up your PC.

For example, extra security features might include ransomware protection and the ability to ensure certain files or folders are locked down against any changes by third-party programs.

For privacy protection, there might be the inclusion of a VPN which allows for more anonymous web browsing. There might also be features in paid software to kill tracking cookies and other privacy protections.

Some paid-for plans even include features such as tuning up your PC, by getting rid of junk files from temporary or cache folders, as well as fix any registry issues that might also be slowing down your PC. If you like the idea of all the whistles and bells, then you may deem it worth shelling out for a more complete internet security suite.

So, overall, if all you want is the most essential virus protection, then free software will do its job. However, if you want a wider range of malware protection, extra privacy controls, and even additional tools to help your PC run more smoothly, then paid-for anti-virus can often offer some or all of these, and more.

Windows 10 is the most popular PC operating system, which makes it the primary target for hackers. To help put your mind at ease, we searched for the best antivirus for Windows 10.

Best Antivirus for windows 10

Hackers and cybercriminals tend to focus their efforts on the largest groups of users. It’s an efficient way of doing business, but it also means those using the most popular operating system on the market become the most vulnerable to attack. For desktop and laptop computer users, that title goes to Windows 10.

If you’re one of the 81 percent of Windows users logging in daily to Windows 10, you may want to find an antivirus program specifically designed for it. Installing antivirus for Windows 10 reduces the potential threat to your device from malware, ransomware, and phishing attempts that specifically target Windows users.

How we rate Windows 10 antivirus apps

Microsoft has come a long way with its home-grown antivirus solution, Windows Defender. However, as effective as Windows Defender is at removing malware, it lacks the kind of additional features and protection tools users now needed for more holistic security.

Thankfully, Microsoft makes it easy to integrate other antivirus tools into your Windows 10 system by prioritizing those tools over Windows Defender. Your Windows 10 desktop or laptop will immediately sideline Windows Defender in favor of your chosen or preferred third-party antivirus app.

There are dozens of potential Windows Defender alternatives you can use.

To determine which is the best antivirus for Windows 10, we examined over 45 antivirus tools against the following criteria:

  • High average independent AV testing lab scores (80% or above)
  • Offers multiple package options to cover 1 or more computers
  • Includes additional security features to protect user privacy when browsing the web, including ransomware protection
  • Provides transparent pricing and subscription options, including the option to turn auto-renewal on or off at checkout

Based on extensive research that includes in-house app testing, independent lab data, and pricing policy reviews, these are the best 14 antivirus tools for Windows 10 users.

1. Norton Antivirus Plus

Norton

Feb 2023

Norton AntiVirus Plus is one of the few antivirus tools that’s a household name. Symantec has been producing Windows antivirus tools since 2006 and has released various utilities for Windows operating systems for decades. Like McAfee, it’s also commonly pre-installed on many new Windows computers.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 93
  • Package options score: 90
  • Features score: 100
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 90

Symantec offers a smorgasbord of features in its Norton AntiVirus range of tools, including real-time scanning, ransomware protection, and with the 360 Deluxe or above packages, parental controls, and multi-device protection. The company also allows for flexible monthly payment options versus the yearly subscription plans that lock users into long-term (and higher) prices. Flexible payment options with Norton make cancellation significantly easier and empower users to get in and out with far less hassle. Norton also mentions its auto-renewal policy at check-out. You can turn off auto-renewal through your account settings.

Pros:

  • Well-known and respected brand
  • High level of anti-virus protection
  • Multiple package options available
  • Transparent second-year pricing

Cons:

  • Limited multi-device coverage for lower-cost packages
  • Higher priced packages than many competitors

Best antivirus for Windows:Most flexible payment options to avoid lock-in. Heavy emphasis on user customization with plenty of features.

2. TotalAV Antivirus

TotalAV Antivirus Pro

TotalAV Antivirus has come a long way in the past several years. We’ve seen the company make major shifts in its business practices, adopting a more consumer-friendly approach to almost every aspect of its service.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 94
  • Package options score: 90
  • Features score: 100
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 80

We’ve kept an eye on TotalAV for several years and have seen this service absolutely explode (positively) in several ways. One of those is in the number of available features that it offers. Just a few years ago, TotalAV featured just a single package with standard real-time malware scanning and removal options. Now, however, there are over a dozen extra features that come at no additional charge, including ransomware protection, cloud scanning, and system optimization tools.

Pros:

  • Bargain-bin pricing for the first year
  • Highly rated by independent testing labs
  • Advanced phishing and ransomware protection
  • Desirable system maintenance and optimization features

Cons:

  • Erects headache-inducing cancelation roadblocks
  • The free trial is extremely feature-limited

Best budget Antivirus:Get protection at a low cost. Works well on all systems and is hard to beat for the money.

3. McAfee Total Protection

McAfee Total Protection Basic

A long-time leader in the business, McAfee’s Total Protection security app offers a wide selection of tools designed to protect Windows users against both common and uncommon threats.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 94
  • Package options score: 100
  • Features score: 100
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 75

McAfee has been a household name in Windows antivirus protection for two decades, while the company has been in the software security market since the late 1980s. Before Windows developed its own antivirus tool, new Windows computers often came preloaded with McAfee’s software. Although that’s less common now, it’s still a leading option thanks to its high-tech approach to malware detection and removal, as well as its focus on multi-device households.

Pros:

  • A seasoned provider with a long history of high-grade Windows protection
  • Internationally-recognized antivirus detection and removal
  • A wide range of file protection tools
  • Offers multi-device packages great for families

Cons:

  • Among the most expensive offers after first-year discounts end

Industry-leading security experts:Scored high in our lab tests. We’d prefer more pricing options and transparency.

4. VIPRE Advanced Security

VIPRE Antivirus Plus

Offering a reasonable selection of extremely effective antivirus and security tools, VIPRE Advanced Security ties with Kaspersky Internet Security primarily due to lower consumer review scores. When it comes to every other factor, however (and particularly independent lab tests and pricing and subscription transparency), VIPRE is among the best options available.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 98
  • Package options score: 100
  • Features score: 100
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 100

Although the VIPRE brand has only been on the market since 2013, the company behind it began crafting security software for Windows in the early 1990s. VIPRE is highly decorated on the antivirus market, receiving numerous accolades from independent labs that have tested and verified the effectiveness of its AV tools. Its array of features (and their effectiveness) easily satisfies our rating criteria.

Pros:

  • Excellent real-time AV protection
  • Provides a solid line-up of features, including anti-spyware tools
  • Updates and patches apps to help shore up security risks
  • Fully transparent pricing and renewal policies
  • Very competitive pricing

Cons:

  • Limited product information available on its website

Excellent protection:Has everything you need and uses advanced techniques to keep you covered.

5. Bitdefender Antivirus Plus

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus

  • Average independent testing lab score: 97
  • Package options score: 95
  • Features score: 100
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 95

Bitdefender Antivirus is particularly well-rated by independent antivirus testing labs. Its critical real-time antivirus tool offers a nearly flawless level of protection, detecting all forms of malware that come its way. The tool also has very little impact on your system, allowing it to run scans in the background without you noticing any loss in performance while you engage in most activities.

Pros:

  • Rich selection of antivirus tools
  • “As good as it gets” independent lab test results
  • Unique features such as multi-layered ransomware protection
  • Incredibly inexpensive for users covering 1 or 3 devices

6. Kaspersky Internet Security

Kaspersky Antivirus

Also known for its deep analyses of the virus and malware landscape, Kaspersky Internet Security earned its high spot on our list thanks to its trustworthy approach to software security and internet protection.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 97
  • Package options score: 90
  • Features score: 100
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 95

This app is one one of the most recognizable on the market and a favored option on our list. The first Kaspersky antivirus software hit the market in 1989, even before the company was officially founded. Since then, Kaspersky has operated as a major Windows antivirus software creator. The company also provides regular insights into the malware landscape, releasing reports several times each year that explore trends in malware and consumer security.

Pros:

  • Consumer-friendly pricing and transparency
  • Industry-leading approach to AV development
  • Must-have additional features, such as webcam and mic protection
  • Free and regular software updates

Panda Antivirus makes our list for several reasons, but especially thanks to its focus on AI and data analytics in the malware detection and removal process.

  • Package options score: 100
  • Features score: 80
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 80

8. ESET Antivirus

ESET NOD32 Antivirus

ESET Antivirus may not be as well-known as some of the household brands like Norton and McAfee, but it’s also not a lightweight. While we don’t have exact numbers for last year just yet, ESET commanded over 11% of the AV tool market share in 2020, which was actually more than McAfee Antivirus. Giving this one a look-through might be a good idea, especially if its price and features match your needs.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 97
  • Package options score: 90
  • Features score: 95
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 90

It might sound trite, but ESET’s 100 million+ users can’t be wrong, especially given the large amount of competition on the market for Windows antivirus protection. Still, the service stands on its own merit outside of a large userbase thanks to excellent independent testing lab results and a wide range of Windows 10 protection features that add to its desirability as a protection tool.

Pros:

  • No-frills approach to antivirus removal
  • Its large market share without heavy marketing is a positive sign
  • Provides protection against phishing, ransomware, spyware, and more

Cons:

  • Charges much more for multi-device protection

Reliable protection:High-grade solution with a wide range of features to cover most needs.

9. Avira Antivirus

Avira Antivirus Pro

Avira Antivirus wins us over for several reasons, some of which go beyond just its usefulness as a Windows 10 antivirus tool. This is one of the few options on the list offering month-to-month subscriptions, a model that’s confoundingly rare in the antivirus market. It also offers a robust, free AV tool that’s a step up over Windows Defender.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 96
  • Package options score: 100
  • Features score: 90
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 80

Avira’s Windows 10 antivirus tool is not incredibly well-known among Windows users. Nevertheless, its service boasts award-winning protection and a “Top Product” stamp of approval from the AV-Test independent testing lab. That complements its high average consumer rating scores and, at a minimum, provides some extra incentive to explore the several package options and features that Avira provides beyond just basic malware scanning and removal.

Pros:

  • Easily manages zero-day threats
  • Added security for online banking and shopping
  • Solid ratings from independent testing labs
  • Month-to-month subscription model available

Cons:

  • Its yearlong subscription options are often pricier than many competitors
  • Limited features in cheapest package

Flexible billing:A top performer with a low level of commitment. Switch easily between packages as your needs change.

10. AVG Internet Security

AVG Internet Security

AVG Antivirus makes our list for a few key reasons. Although its scores are fairly mediocre, it’s also one of the most trusted and well-known names in Windows security thanks to its free offering. What many users may not realize is that AVG offers a feature-expanded paid tool, as well.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 94.6
  • Package options score: 80
  • Features score: 90
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 80

AVG’s free antivirus helped but it on the map, but its paid tool is a bit of a contradiction. On the one hand, it scores high in independent testing lab results, meaning it works as intended. Conversely, consumers tend to dislike the company behind it, which leads to lower consumer review ratings. Overall, though, even if you dislike the brand, the company’s tool is highly effective at threat mitigation.

Pros:

  • Fast, efficient malware scanning and removal
  • Loaded with additional features for PC security maintenance
  • Long history of producing effective Windows 10 AV products

Cons:

  • Prices its software well above average
  • The company regularly receives negative customer service reviews

Experienced provider:A leading company that pioneered many of the industry’s threat protection technology. Wide range of features across multiple packages.

11. Trend Micro Antivirus

Trend Micro Antivirus Plus Security

Trend Micro’s packages are competitively priced, especially when compared to AVG. Further to its credit, the company’s basic protection, while still slim on features, has more to offer than most of the other basic package offers available through its peers.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 91
  • Package options score: 90
  • Features score: 100
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 90

Trend Micro is one of the largest computer security companies in the world. Because it primarily offers business-related products, it has a surprisingly small offering for consumers. However, its three consumer-focused packages were designed to manage common risks associated with owning a Windows 10 computer. Even Basic subscription users will enjoy a bit more from the feature list than what’s available through other AV software, including protection against phishing emails and the Trend Micro Pay Guard that adds an extra layer of digital security for online banking and shopping.

Pros:

  • Reasonable first-year pricing
  • Provides a unique social media privacy tool
  • Offers parental protection tools for childrens’ computers

Cons:

  • Excessive check-out page upselling

Large suite of tools:Significant focus on business endpoint protection. Also offers three consumer focused packages.

12. G Data Total Security

G Data Antivirus for Windows

G Data Total Security uses two virus scanning engines, one of which is Bitdefender’s highly-rated scanning tool. The use of a Bitdefender engine likely helps ensure this service ranks easily makes the list and scores well with independent testing labs. That said, it still stands on its own legs in the other categories.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 94
  • Package options score: 90
  • Features score: 100
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 90

Founded in 1985, G Data has offered Windows security solutions for every major iteration of Microsoft Windows. This Germany-based company provides several different packages for Windows users, including its “Total Security” option for multi-device coverage and AV tools for Mac computers and Android devices. Its Windows 10 antivirus is straightforward and buffered by Bitdefender’s virus scanning engine, a sure bet for effective malware detection and removal.

Pros:

  • Blocks unauthorized device access
  • Includes a secure password manager
  • Uses two real-time antivirus engines for added protection

Cons:

  • Few differentiating features or pricing schemes

Two virus scanning engines:Multi-device and multi-year coverage available.

13. Comodo Internet Security

Comodo Antivirus Free

Comodo Internet Security specializes in all forms of web security, so it makes sense that it has a Windows 10 antivirus app as well.  This service doesn’t give any ground to its larger competitors in this space, though its more affordable pricing is certainly a power move.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 94
  • Package options score: 85
  • Features score: 80
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 90

Comodo has an extensive reach in the internet and software security market. Its products cover multiple business and consumer needs. Notably, Comodo’s stance on antivirus is that free tools are just as effective as paid ones at removing malware and viruses. All the same, the company still offers a paid tool with a suite of sought-after features that extend beyond just virus removal, while also offering its tool at a lower price than most of its competitors.

Pros:

  • Doesn’t use pricing gimmicks
  • Straightforward real-time virus identification and removal
  • Offers additional cloud-based antivirus, virus sandboxing, anti-spam, and email protection

Cons:

  • Not ideal for households with multiple computers
  • Very few bonus features

14. Emsisoft Anti-Malware

Emsisoft

Emsisoft has a small share of the market, yet remains regarded in the industry as a highly trustworthy option for Windows security protection. This is highlighted by its positive reception among users and consumer reviews and its excellent array of features.

  • Average independent testing lab score: 93
  • Package options score: 80
  • Features score: 100
  • Pricing and subscription transparency score: 80

The first version of Emsisoft was launched in 2003. Since then, the company has updated and upgraded its service to meet consumer demand. Emsisoft commands around one percent of the AV software market, which is not insignificant considering how many tools are currently available. Similar to G Data, Emsisoft formed a partnership with Bitdefender that now sees Bitdefender’s antivirus engine powering the Emsisoft Anti-Malware tool.

Pros:

  • Dual-engine approach powered by Bitdefender’s software
  • Offers ransomware protection
  • Scans down to the command line
  • Detects and removes banking trojans and backdoor malware

Cons:

  • Pricey for multiple computer households

Methodology: how we select the best antivirus for windows 10

Finding an excellent antivirus for Windows 10 is no easy task. It involves testing and checks for several criteria, which you can see below:

  1. Device support: Most antiviruses are built with windows users in mind, with macOS as the next supported platform. We select products that support various Windows versions alongside windows 10.
  2. Threat detection: We put antiviruses up against inert and live malware samples to see how they react and whether they can disinfect your system.
  3. Billing: We look for providers that offer value like first-year discounts and those that offer a money-back guarantee as standard.
  4. Performance: Using diagnostics tools, we monitor the performance of AV software to ensure it doesn’t put unnecessary strain on your system.
  5. User interface: We check for simple products for entry-level users to navigate, with enough options for more advanced users to take advantage of.

If you’d like to learn more about our test criteria, read our antivirus testing methodology.

By installing one of the best Windows 10 antivirus programs on your PC, you can better protect your system and your data against malware and cyberattacks.

Even though Windows Defender has improved significantly in recent years, you may still want some extra protection for your PC in addition to Microsoft’s own antivirus software that ships with Windows. Besides protecting against malware and viruses, some of these programs come equipped with the ability to “rollback” files that have been encrypted by ransomware along with advanced protection to stop phishing emails, malicious links, fileless malware or boot-sector infections.

It’s worth noting though that these antivirus programs don’t offer the same level of protection as the best internet security suites since only a few of them include a VPN or password manager.

We’ve taken a hard look at the best Windows 10 antivirus software to see how well they can protect your Windows PC. We’ve also examined how much they slow down your system and what you should be paying for the features on offer. As everyone’s security needs are different, we’ve also provided some tips on how to choose the best Windows 10 antivirus software for you.

Bitdefender Antivirus Plus also includes a VPN but it’s limited to 200MB per day unless you pay extra. However, there aren’t any parental controls. VPN, password manager just teases

If you want the very best Windows 10 antivirus protection, Kaspersky Anti-Virus should be your first choice. No other brand of antivirus software matches its nearly impeccable record in third-party lab tests.

The company’s entry-level package, Kaspersky Anti-Virus, covers up to three Windows PCs for $60 per year, or up to five for $80, though you’ll often get half off for the first year.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus doesn’t give many of you the extra bells and whistles you’ll find with more expensive security suites. There are no parental controls, the password manager holds only 15 entries and the VPN service is limited to 300MB per day. (You can pay extra to get unlimited versions of those.)

But Kaspersky Anti-Virus does give you exactly what you need: dedicated protection against encrypting ransomware, a filter against phishing emails, browser extensions to beef up web safety and a security scanner for your home Wi-Fi network.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus also has new protection against «stalkerware» or spying programs that the company is rolling out across all its antivirus products.

Excellent malware protection

Backup software, online storage, password manager

+

VPN if you’re willing to pay a bit more

Reasons to avoid

Heavy slowdown during full scans

Pretty pricey for a single PC

Norton sells nine different antivirus packages, but we’ll focus on the two cheapest here. Norton AntiVirus Plus protects one PC or Mac for a rather pricey $60 per year, but it does come with a two-way firewall, an unlimited password manager, backup software and 2GB of online storage.

The next tier up, Norton 360 Standard, puts you in internet-security-suite territory by adding an unlimited VPN, webcam protection, dark-web scans for your personal information and 10GB of online storage. At $85 per year for a single PC though, it might be a bit expensive for some customers. Other brands cover up to 10 PCs for that price.

On the upside, Norton’s track record at finding and defeating malware is second only to Kaspersky’s. If you don’t mind paying a premium price for an entry-level antivirus package, or if you were planning to pay for a VPN or password manager separately, you could do a lot worse.

Reasons to avoid

Few extra features

Compared to other Windows 10 antivirus programs, ESET NOD32 Antivirus is like a street-racing hot rod — light, cheap, fast and effective, but with few extra frills.

It’s got the smallest drag on system performance of any paid antivirus product we’ve seen, it zaps malware like the best of them, and it’s got a unique per-device pricing structure than ensures you pay no more than you need to.

ESET’s extra features are under the hood. It scans a PC’s start-up sector, searching your memory and Registry for hidden malware and also blocks known malicious websites. But if you’re looking for user-friendly goodies like a password manager, VPN or firewall, you’d better look elsewhere.

Can’t opt out of data collection

McAfee AntiVirus Plus is a bargain among Windows 10 antivirus programs if you have a lot of computers and smartphones to protect. For $60 per year, you can cover up to 10 devices running Windows, Mac, Android or iOS, and McAfee doesn’t mind if you add a few more.

Windows users get a file shredder, ransomware rollback, a firewall and protective browser extensions. McAfee AntiVirus, without the «Plus,» delivers the same features to a single Windows PC for $40 per year.

McAfee’s malware protection hasn’t always been the best in lab tests, but it’s improved a lot. The only big downsides today are very heavy system slowdown during active malware scans, plus the fact that you can’t stop threat-data collection from your PC if you choose not to have it.

False positives on some tests

Trend Micro does very well in some lab tests, but its Antivirus+ Security package is even more Spartan than ESET’s among Windows 10 antivirus programs. For $40 per year for one PC, you get a gaming mode, a secure web browser for online banking, ransomware rollback and an email screener to guard against phishing attempts.

The downsides are that you’ll see a pretty heavy system slowdown during scans, so make sure to run them during off hours. You may also get a lot of false positives, or benign items flagged as suspicious, which may indicate that Trend Micro’s malware-detection engine is a bit over tuned.

How to choose the best Windows 10 antivirus for you

As is the case with other types of software, you need to choose Windows 10 antivirus programs according to both your needs and budget. The best bang for your buck is Bitdefender Antivirus Plus as it’s fairly inexpensive and has an unlimited password manager, a file shredder and its own secure browser.

If you have more money to spend and only a single PC to protect, you might want to consider Norton AntiVirus Plus or Norton 360 Standard. Both give you access to an unlimited password manager and Standard adds an unlimited VPN and dark web personal information monitoring.

If you have Macs and Android devices to cover in addition to Windows 10 machines, McAfee AntiVirus Plus can meet your needs at a bargain rate – $60 covers 10 devices. However, McAfee’s malware defenses are not quite as good as those of Norton, Bitdefender or Kaspersky.

To get the best Mac antivirus software or the best Android antivirus apps as part of a bundle, you’ve often got to upgrade to midrange antivirus software, if not the premium tiers.

Of course, if all you want to do is keep your PCs free from malware, then Kaspersky Anti-Virus is the best choice. It doesn’t do much besides block malware, phishing emails and dodgy websites, but it does these things better than the rest.

How we test the best Windows 10 antivirus programs

We evaluated each Windows 10 antivirus program on this list based on its interface, performance, protection and extra features.

Was the program intuitive and user-friendly? Did malware scans significantly slow down system performance? Was it effective at detecting and removing both old and new malware? Did the program come with any other useful tools?

Our tests were performed on a Lenovo ThinkPad T470 with a 2.5GHz Core i5-7200U processor, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of solid-state storage containing 43.3GB of files.

In order to gauge each program’s impact on system performance, we used our custom Excel test which measures how long a PC takes to match 20,000 names and addresses on a spreadsheet. The longer the task takes, the more the system is impacted.

For malware detection performance, we referred to results from tests conducted by three independent labs: AV-TEST in Germany, AV-Comparatives in Austria and SE Labs in England.

Each lab periodically subjects major antivirus programs to stress tests that include thousands of pieces of malware as well as hundreds of “zero-day” samples that the software has to learn to recognize.

For even more information, check out our guide on how we test antivirus software and apps.

Short on time? Here’s the best antivirus for Windows 10 & 11:

  • 🥇 Norton 360: Powerful malware protection against viruses, spyware, ransomware, adware, and more. Comes with web and phishing protection, a VPN, parental controls, secure storage, and a password manager.
    • Get the best Windows antivirus here (54% off first year, terms apply).

I tested dozens of antiviruses on my Windows PC, hoping to find which ones had the best malware detection rates, web protection, and extra security features — at an affordable price.

Unfortunately, there’s a lot of really bad software out there. Even some well-known brands didn’t offer the level of protection I expected, letting ransomware and spyware run on my systems. Other programs were buggy and caused my system to slow down, while some provided good protection but were overpriced.

However, the 10 antiviruses on this list all performed really well. Each detected a wide range of malware samples, included a comprehensive range of additional features, and did enough to keep my device fully protected. Overall, Norton gave me the most consistent results in my malware tests, making it my favorite Windows antivirus of 2023.

🥇1. Norton 360 — Best PC Security Suite in 2023

🥇1. Norton 360 — Best PC Security Suite in 2023

Norton 360 is the gold standard of antivirus software in 2023, providing excellent malware protection as well as the best additional features of any product on the market. Plus, even though it includes a ton of features, Norton is still really easy to use, with an intuitive desktop app and an even better online dashboard that makes it simple to access all of Norton’s functions.

🥇1. Norton 360 — Best PC Security Suite in 2023Norton scored a 100% detection rate on Windows 8, 10, and 11 devices in my tests. Its SONAR system uses machine learning to detect malware based on its behavior, so it can even detect zero-day threats that aren’t saved in any malware database. And Norton’s real-time protection scans all incoming downloads and running processes, blocking malware files before they can infect Windows devices.

Norton’s 360 packages also include:

  • Anti-phishing protection.
  • Integrated firewall.
  • Secure VPN.
  • Password manager.
  • Parental controls.
  • Dark web monitoring.
  • PC SafeCam (Windows only).
  • Identity theft protection (US only).
  • Cloud backup (up to 500 GB).
  • And much more…

Norton’s additional features are very good. In my testing, its anti-phishing protections blocked phishing sites and other unsafe sites more accurately than browser-based protections from Chrome, Edge, or Firefox, and its firewall detected unsafe network activity that my Windows PC’s built-in firewall missed.

🥇1. Norton 360 — Best PC Security Suite in 2023
I’m also a big fan of Norton’s Safe Family parental controls. With content filtering, mobile device tracking, scheduled usage, and more, they’re the best antivirus-bundled parental controls on the market. In my tests, Safe Family successfully blocked dozens of inappropriate sites across a range of categories, and it could accurately determine my test device’s location.

Norton also provides one of the best antivirus-bundled password managers of any antivirus. While it might not be as full-featured as standalone password managers, it’s far better than the very basic offerings of most antiviruses. With Norton’s password manager, you can store unlimited passwords, sync across unlimited devices, generate passwords, and audit your password vault. I found it super simple to set up and use, and I like how it has 256-bit AES encryption so you know your data is completely secure.

Starting at just RUB1,410 / year, all of Norton’s 360 packages are an excellent value. I think Norton 360 Deluxe is the best choice, providing all of Norton’s additional features on up to 5 devices for only RUB3,520 / year. If you’re in the US, you can also take a look at Norton’s LifeLock plans, which offer exceptional identity theft protections, including live credit report monitoring, one-on-one support in the event of fraud, and up to $1 million in insurance for victims of identity theft. There’s a 60-day money-back guarantee on all of Norton’s plans.

Norton — 54% off

Get Norton 360 Deluxe for only RUB3,520!

Bottom Line:

Norton’s range of cybersecurity features performs far better than most other antiviruses. The software is fast and easy to use, and Norton’s advanced anti-malware protection scored a 100% detection rating in our testing. If you need a high-powered Windows antivirus, Norton is the best there is. There’s a 60-day money-back guarantee offered with every Norton package.

🥈2. Bitdefender Total Security — Best for Advanced Malware Protection

🥈2. Bitdefender Total Security — Best for Advanced Malware Protection

Bitdefender uses a powerful cloud-based anti-malware engine that doesn’t slow down Windows PCs — I was extremely impressed with how smoothly Bitdefender ran on my PC, not affecting my CPU or RAM even during full scans.

Bitdefender’s anti-malware engine uses machine learning, advanced heuristics, and a massive malware database to detect unsafe files — in my testing, Bitdefender scored a 100% detection rating, blocking trojans, rootkits, ransomware, spyware, and more. Bitdefender also offers a ransomware remediation tool, which backs up important data if any suspicious activity is detected and restores the data after the threat is removed.

🥈2. Bitdefender Total Security — Best for Advanced Malware Protection

Bitdefender offers some excellent additional features as well, including:

  • Anti-phishing protection.
  • VPN.
  • Password manager.
  • Parental controls.
  • Secure browser.
  • System tune-up.
  • And more…

I really like Bitdefender’s web shield, which detected all of the phishing sites and unsafe sites in my testing. It performed far better than the built-in protections from Chrome and Firefox, and it also identified more risky sites than almost all other antiviruses. I’m also a big fan of Safepay, the secure encrypted browser window that provides a secure way to access your finances online.

🥈2. Bitdefender Total Security — Best for Advanced Malware ProtectionBitdefender’s VPN is pretty great — it uses Hotspot Shield’s super-fast VPN protocol, so I was able to stream HD video, download files, and surf the web with hardly any slowdown on my Windows PC. However, the VPN is capped at 200 MB per day on all but the most expensive Premium Security plan. Still, if you’re in the market for an antivirus-bundled VPN, it’s worth the additional price.

Bitdefender also provides a comprehensive set of parental controls, including content filtering, usage monitoring, and geofencing, so you can get notifications if your kids leave a safe area. The parental controls are easy to set up and use, and all of the tools worked well in our testing.

Finally, I found the Profiles feature very convenient, as it automatically optimizes your device’s performance for various tasks including working, streaming, gaming, and more. I tested the gaming profile mode while gaming on my Windows PC, and it reduced notifications and improved my system’s overall performance. I love the range of profiles available too — while other antiviruses like Norton offer specialized gaming modes, it’s great how Bitdefender includes a whole variety of online activities that it can optimize for you.

Bitdefender offers several plans to choose from, but my favorite is Bitdefender Premium Security, which includes all of Bitdefender’s features, plus unlimited VPN data and a full-featured password manager for only RUB4,220 / year. Other options include Bitdefender Internet Security, which comes with real-time antivirus scanning, anti-phishing protection, and parental controls (but only for 3 Windows devices) for RUB2,320 / year, and Bitdefender Total Security, which adds device tune-up and coverage for up to 5 Windows, Android, Mac, or iOS devices for RUB2,540 / year. While both of these plans are great, they put a limit on daily VPN usage (only 200 MB per day). All of Bitdefender’s plans have a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bitdefender Total Security — 62% off

Get Bitdefender Total Security for up to 5 devices for only RUB2,540!

Bottom Line:

Bitdefender delivers complete internet security for Windows with a cloud-based antivirus backed by machine learning. It offers cutting-edge privacy and security features, including powerful anti-phishing protection, a fast VPN, a decent password manager, and good parental controls. You can try out Bitdefender risk-free with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

🥉3. McAfee Total Protection — Best for Unlimited Device Coverage

🥉3. McAfee Total Protection — Best for Unlimited Device Coverage

McAfee has an excellent malware scanner, a wide range of features, and offers coverage on an unlimited number of devices. It detected over 99.7% of the malware in my testing, and its scanner uses the latest heuristic and machine-based learning technology to detect malware files. Unfortunately, McAfee’s full disk scan slowed down my device a bit during testing (Bitdefender and TotalAV didn’t slow my system at all, even during full disk scans).

🥉3. McAfee Total Protection — Best for Unlimited Device CoverageMcAfee’s additional features include:

  • Web protection tools. Comes with Wi-Fi scanning, a smart firewall, and anti-phishing protection.
  • Battery optimization. Offers an option to reduce battery drain on laptops.
  • System tune-up. Improves a computer’s performance by erasing unnecessary files that may slow down PC operations.
  • File shredder. Securely deletes files in a matter of moments.
  • Vulnerability scanner. Scans and installs important Windows and application updates.
  • Secure VPN. Encrypts internet traffic with decent bandwidth speeds and unlimited browsing data.
  • Parental controls (family plans only). A comprehensive set of tools to keep your kids safe online.
  • Identity theft protection (available in the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan, and many European countries). Monitors credit reports for unusual activity and includes a sizable insurance payout.
  • Unlimited device coverage. Protect your entire household with one McAfee subscription.

I love that McAfee’s Premium and Advanced plans come with unlimited device coverage. It allows you to protect everyone in your household without paying additional fees — making McAfee an excellent choice for families. Competitor antiviruses like Panda Dome provide unlimited device coverage, but you have to pay extra for it.

I also really like McAfee’s web protection. The WebAdvisor tool does a great job protecting you from dangerous phishing sites. It performed perfectly in my tests, blocking every dodgy site I tried to visit, including plenty that Chrome and Edge missed. McAfee’s Wi-Fi network scanner notified me whenever any changes happened on my network. Plus, the firewall provides active protection against network-based hacking threats.

🥉3. McAfee Total Protection — Best for Unlimited Device CoverageFinally, I like McAfee’s parental controls, which let you easily set rules and limits for your children based on their ages. The location tracking also works really well — you can see where your kid’s device is with pinpoint accuracy, and they can send you instant updates to let you know when they reach a safe destination.

McAfee is one of the best-value internet security suites for Windows in 2023, starting at just RUB2,820 / year. It offers several pricing options that cover from 5 to an unlimited number of devices (which is really cool), and all of its plans are covered by a risk-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

McAfee Premium — 60% off

Discount applied automatically at checkout.

Bottom Line:

McAfee offers excellent malware protection and a huge variety of additional security features. I was really impressed with McAfee’s web protection, and its parental controls are also really good. McAfee also includes useful extras like system tune-up tools, a file shredder, and identity theft protection. Plus, it has some of the most affordable plans of any antivirus on my list, offers unlimited device coverage so you can protect your entire household with one subscription, and provides a no-risk 30-day money-back guarantee.

4. TotalAV — Best Antivirus + VPN Combo for Windows

4. TotalAV — Best Antivirus + VPN Combo for Windows

TotalAV is a powerful, easy-to-use option for protecting Windows devices in 2023 — with good antivirus scanning, an excellent VPN, comprehensive identity protection tools, and some of the best PC performance optimization tools I’ve tested. In my testing, TotalAV’s scanner detected and blocked 99% of the malware files on my Windows PC with its advanced antivirus scanner.

4. TotalAV — Best Antivirus + VPN Combo for WindowsWindows users that want additional online privacy will love TotalAV’s VPN. It’s one of our top antivirus+VPN combos for 2023, offering:

  • Secure 256-bit AES encryption. Military-grade encryption that makes your data indecipherable by third parties.
  • Kill switch. Automatically cuts your internet connection if your VPN connection drops, so you’re never unprotected.
  • No-logs policy. No personal information is stored by TotalAV, including the sites you visit and the files you download.
  • Servers in 30+ countries. With a great spread that ensures you can always find a nearby server location to connect to (to get the best speeds).
  • IKEv2 and OpenVPN protocols. Two of the fastest and most secure VPN protocols today.

I was able to torrent and stream HD content without slowdowns thanks to TotalAV’s fast and secure protocols, TotalAV’s VPN was able to access streaming sites like Netflix, Disney+, and Hulu).

4. TotalAV — Best Antivirus + VPN Combo for WindowsTotalAV’s performance optimization tools are excellent as well — I was able to remove junk files, uninstall old applications, and erase browser cookies that were slowing down my Windows PC. TotalAV successfully found and removed over 1 GB of junk from my PC — 97% more than Windows Disk Cleanup was able to find! The Startup Manager is also really good, as it lets you control which apps you want to start automatically when you boot your computer. Windows has an almost identical feature, but it’s really tricky to find and use, so I appreciate how TotalAV makes this process easy and intuitive.

I like TotalAV’s Webshield too; in my tests, it was able to block more dangerous websites than Chrome or Firefox’s built-in protections. While Norton’s anti-phishing tools are a bit more advanced, I found TotalAV’s Webshield both easy to use and effective. I also love how it’s available as a free download.

However, TotalAV’s password manager isn’t very good — it doesn’t sync across devices, and it doesn’t include any vault auditing tools like the best password managers on the market do.

TotalAV’s best-value plan is Internet Security (RUB2,750 / year) — it includes TotalAV’s excellent VPN and covers 5 devices. Other plans include Antivirus Pro (RUB1,340 / year), which comes with the anti-malware engine, optimization tools, and coverage for 3 devices, and Total Security (RUB3,450 / year), which adds an ad blocker, a password manager, and coverage for 6 devices. And all TotalAV purchases come with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line:

TotalAV is my favorite antivirus with a bundled VPN for Windows 10 and 11 in 2023. The antivirus scanner is powerful and lightweight, and the VPN provides super-fast encrypted browsing. Plus TotalAV’s system tune-up makes cleaning and speeding up your PC really simple. Even though I’m not a big fan of TotalAV’s password manager, it provides enough additional features overall that it’s well worth checking out. There’s a 30-day money-back guarantee on all TotalAV plans.

5. Avira Prime — Best for Fast Scans & Automated Software Updates

5. Avira Prime — Best for Fast Scans & Automated Software Updates

Avira’s Prime package combines a powerful anti-malware scanner with tons of useful features, including a really good Windows software update tool. Like Bitdefender, Avira utilizes cloud-based technology to scan devices with minimal system slowdown — and it scored a 100% detection rate against both old and new malware samples. Avira’s scanner was also the fastest in my testing, performing full scans in 20 minutes on my 500 GB gaming PC.

5. Avira Prime — Best for Fast Scans & Automated Software UpdatesIn addition to the state-of-the-art virus scanner, Avira offers:

  • PUA shield. Protects against potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) that can be hidden within legitimate software.
  • Firewall manager. Optimizes firewall settings based on desired levels of security.
  • Web protection. Protects against all kinds of malicious web content and phishing sites.
  • VPN. Hides your IP address behind an encrypted server for online privacy.
  • Password manager. Generates, stores, and auto-fills logins for greater password security and convenience.
  • Software updater. Automatically updates many popular programs.
  • Advanced system tune-up. Records comprehensive performance data, eliminates junk files, boosts startup time, and optimizes PC performance while gaming.

I really like Avira’s system tune-up features, which were able to improve performance on one of my old test PCs (which is still running Windows 8). The junk file cleaner identified over 1 GB of junk, and it also flagged some other old files that I might have wanted to keep, giving me the choice of whether to delete them or not. I really appreciate this approach, as it ensures nothing important is accidentally purged from your PC. I’m also happy that Software Updater identifies outdated programs and automatically updates them.

5. Avira Prime — Best for Fast Scans & Automated Software UpdatesAvira’s password manager is one of the most intuitive options out there, and most of its features are available for free, including unlimited password storage, multi-device sync, auto-save and auto-fill, and two-factor authentication. It definitely one of the best antivirus-bundled password managers on the market.

My only issue with Avira is that its VPN isn’t as fast as Bitdefender‘s, and it doesn’t work with popular streaming sites like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney+. That said, it does have a kill switch for Windows users, and it does support torrenting, so it’s not a bad choice as far as antivirus-bundled VPNs go.

Avira also lacks dark web monitoring and parental controls, so Norton is a better choice if you’re looking for these tools as part of your internet security package.

Avira has several plans to choose from, but my favorite is Avira Prime (RUB4,220 / year), which includes Avira’s Phantom VPN (with unlimited browsing data) and protects up to 5 Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS devices. Avira also offers the best free antivirus on the market, but it lacks a lot of Avira Prime’s most important extra features. All the paid plans come with a 60-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line:

Avira provides 100% malware detection, a lightweight scanner, and an excellent set of tools to protect Windows PCs. The software updater keeps all applications and drivers updated automatically, which is really important for device security. Plus, Avira’s password manager and system tune-up features are some of the best on the market. Avira Prime is a little pricey, but it comes with a 60-day money-back guarantee.

6. Panda Dome — Best for File Encryption & Rescuing Infected PCs

6. Panda Dome — Best for File Encryption & Rescuing Infected PCs

Panda Dome has a good antivirus scanner and a few unique security features that are really useful. It caught 95% of my malware samples, which is really good, but not as impressive as Norton’s 100% score. However, Panda only scored a 50% phishing link detection rate in my testing, which is pretty bad.

These were the protections that made Panda stand out in my testing:

  • File encryption.
  • File shredder.
  • PC Rescue Kit.

Panda Dome makes it easy to encrypt important work documents behind a secure password — letting you safeguard them from malware and ransomware. It uses a third-party password manager, Password Depot, to secure your files, and the process is super simple. The file shredding works really well too, and it gives you peace of mind by ensuring that sensitive files are completely and permanently deleted from your system.

Panda’s file encryption and shredding tools are super handy, whether you’re sharing your Windows device with other users or you just want to ensure your sensitive information is fully protected from hackers. Not many other antiviruses offer this service — Avira has file encryption and shredding too, but I found Panda’s to be especially easy and intuitive.

6. Panda Dome — Best for File Encryption & Rescuing Infected PCs

The Rescue Kit that Panda offers is really excellent too. It disinfects Windows PCs that are already blocked by malware — this is useful for those emergency situations where a device is completely inaccessible. Simply load the Rescue Kit onto a USB drive, plug in the USB drive into the infected device, boot it, and Panda will automatically erase malware and make the device usable again. This tool is a great perk for Windows users — it’s pretty unique, and it worked really well when I tested it on a colleague’s computer that had been infected.

Panda’s packages also include web protection, a VPN, a password manager, and a secure browser, but these extras aren’t as good as what top competitors like Norton and Bitdefender provide. For example, all Panda plans except the most expensive one limit your VPN data usage to 150 MB/day, and you don’t get the ability to select your own server location. In addition, its parental controls lack some of the useful features offered by Norton, such as a toggle for school time restrictions and the ability to easily check what videos your kids have watched recently on YouTube.

Panda’s premium plans are quite expensive compared to other brands that offer a similar range of features (and cover more devices) for less money. But the reasonably priced Panda Dome Essential package is a good option — it includes real-time malware scanning, a Wi-Fi scanner, and even a VPN (with 150 MB per day) for RUB1,690 / year.

Bottom Line:

Panda’s antivirus scanner performed well in my tests, and I really liked some of the additional features — especially the Rescue Kit for Windows PCs. I wasn’t impressed with some of the other features, though, and I also think that Panda’s packages are a little overpriced. That said, they do offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so it’s 100% worth trying Panda to see if it’s the best antivirus for your PC.

7. Kaspersky Premium — Best for Ease of Use

7. Kaspersky Premium — Best for Ease of Use

Kaspersky provides a secure malware scanner for Windows along with a very intuitive dashboard and some excellent additional features. Its real-time malware scanning engine detected 100% of viruses, spyware, ransomware, and other malware in my testing, putting it right up there with Norton and Bitdefender. Its anti-phishing protection is really good too, and it blocked the vast majority of malicious websites when I tested it, including many that Chrome and Firefox had missed.

Kaspersky also has:

  • Safe Money. Secures shopping and banking in a special secure browser.
  • Privacy protection. Ensures outside programs aren’t accessing webcams or microphones without permission.
  • Parental controls. Blocks unsafe content and tracks device location.
  • Rescue Disk. Disinfects your PC on startup.
  • Password manager. Stores and auto-fills passwords for extra security and speed.
  • VPN. Allows unlimited data, works with many streaming services including Netflix, supports P2P traffic, and offers servers in 30+ countries.
  • System optimizer. Removes duplicate files and unused apps, monitors the health of your PC hard disk, alerts you if app updates are required, and provides an option to disable data-heavy apps to boost device speeds.

7. Kaspersky Premium — Best for Ease of UseI really like Kaspersky’s parental controls. They’re intuitive to use and come with a heap of useful features to keep your kids safe online. The content filtering and usage limitation worked well when I tested them on Android (the usage limitation feature didn’t work on iOS), and the location tracking and geofencing were able to pinpoint my test device’s location pretty accurately. Kaspersky also offers social network monitoring for VK, which is something very few antivirus-bundled parental controls offer, but I’d also like to see that monitoring extended to other platforms like Facebook or Twitter.

However, many of Kaspersky’s extra features are less impressive than those of its competitors. Its password manager, for example, lacks two-factor authentication (2FA), which is offered by Norton. Its application vulnerability scanner, which looks for outdated and compromised apps, didn’t always flag my test apps. Also, its dark web monitoring is very basic — I prefer Norton, which scans the dark web for more personal information.

Starting at RUB2,180 / year, Kaspersky’s Premium plan offers the best value. It includes all of Kaspersky features, gives free access to the parental controls for 1 year, and provides coverage for up to 20 devices across all operating systems. Kaspersky backs all of its plans with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line:

Kaspersky Premium is a top-level security program that is super easy to use and navigate. If you’re looking for an easy, set-and-forget antivirus for your Windows PC, Kaspersky is a decent option — and it comes with a commitment-free 30-day money-back guarantee.

8. Malwarebytes — Best for Basic Cybersecurity Protections

8. Malwarebytes — Best for Basic Cybersecurity Protections

Malwarebytes is a simple virus scanner with good malware detection rates — in my tests, Malwarebytes’s on-demand scanner detected around 95% of the test malware, which is decent but not flawless like Norton and Bitdefender. However, its real-time protection is more impressive. It blocked almost 99% of the same files — on par with some of the biggest names in the industry like TotalAV.

Malwarebytes also has a good web security browser extension, Browser Guard, which blocks trackers, pop-up ads, exploit attacks, and phishing sites. It performed really well in my tests, blocking over 90% of the malicious sites I tried to access. I also like how you can easily adjust your settings, for example if Malwarebytes is blocking a site you know to be safe.

8. Malwarebytes — Best for Basic Cybersecurity ProtectionsHowever, I was much less impressed with Malwarebytes’s ad blocker. It performed poorly compared to Avira’s, allowing ads through on many of the sites I visited during my tests.

Malwarebytes includes a VPN, but it’s not as feature-rich as standalone VPN competitors. It’s also not a great choice for accessing popular streaming sites like Netflix. But if all you’re looking for is an easy-to-use VPN with fast speeds, it’s an ok choice.

Unfortunately, Malwarebytes doesn’t have any other features that most premium antiviruses offer, like a firewall, a password manager, and a system tune-up tool. That said, its minimalistic design and lack of extra features may appeal to users who are looking for a basic antivirus program.

Starting at RUB2,640 / year, Malwarebytes is similarly priced to Norton and Bitdefender, both of which provide significantly more cybersecurity protections. But if you’re interested, Malwarebytes has a 60-day money-back guarantee, so there’s no risk in trying it out.

Bottom Line:

Malwarebytes is a good malware scanner with phishing protection — you can upgrade to Malwarebytes’s most expensive plan to get a VPN, but that’s it. If you’re looking for more functionality, take a look at the other brands on this list. But if you’re ok with a minimalistic antivirus, Malwarebytes is a decent option. All of Malwarebytes’s plans come with a generous 60-day money-back guarantee.

9. Trend Micro — Best for Safe Browsing & Online Banking

9. Trend Micro — Best for Safe Browsing & Online Banking

Trend Micro has a good malware scanner and decent internet security tools for Windows users. Its malware scanner was able to detect 97% of the test malware on my Windows PC, which is not quite up there with Norton and Bitdefender, but it’s still pretty impressive.

I think it’s really cool how Trend Micro shows users which sites are safe — it offers a simple color-coding system to rank Google search results from green (safe) to yellow (unsafe) to red (dangerous). It also did a great job at preventing me from accessing malicious sites when I tried to visit them, blocking every single site I tried, including many that Chrome and Firefox had let through.

9. Trend Micro — Best for Safe Browsing & Online BankingTrend Micro also includes:

  • Data breach monitoring.
  • VPN.
  • Password manager.
  • Secure browser.
  • System optimization tools.
  • Dark web monitoring.
  • Parental controls.

I really like Trend Micro’s data breach monitoring, which searches online databases for passwords, logins, and even credit card information that could be susceptible to hackers. And Trend Micro’s social media privacy tool made it easy for me to access and change all of the privacy settings on my social media accounts.

Trend Micro’s recently updated VPN is reasonably good (it used to be very bad). It comes with unlimited data, a range of server locations, and decent speeds. But if you’re looking for something with very fast speeds and advanced security features, it’s best to consider a standalone VPN.

I think Trend Micro’s password manager does the basics really well. It offers unlimited password storage, a password generator, a form filler, and secure notes. It’s easy to use, but Norton’s password manager is much better — for example, with Norton you can audit your passwords, whereas Trend Micro doesn’t offer this feature.

Trend Micro also comes with a set of system tune-up tools that can help you fix security vulnerabilities, reduce startup time, create more disk space by removing unused and duplicate files, and clean privacy data. However, this feature doesn’t do anything that the Windows system couldn’t do already, so it’s mostly a convenience thing that puts all of the optimization tools in one place.

Trend Micro is a decent choice for intuitive web protections and a good malware scanner, with prices starting from RUB1,410 / year — but I think it needs to provide a few more premium features to compare with similarly priced competitors.

Bottom Line:

Trend Micro has a good cloud-based malware scanner as well as decent extras like data breach monitoring and phishing protection. I think it’s a little bit overpriced, but it’s a lightweight program that has some good internet security protections. Trend Micro offers a 30-day free trial and a 30-day money-back guarantee on all plans.

10. ESET Smart Security Premium — Good Malware Scanning & Advanced Diagnostics

10. ESET Smart Security Premium — Good Malware Scanning & Advanced Diagnostics

ESET provides an advanced anti-malware engine and diagnostics tools for Windows security experts — while ESET is a good choice for highly tech-minded users, most users should look elsewhere. That said, ESET’s malware scanner uses advanced heuristics to catch zero-day malware threats — and it scored near-perfect detection rates on all of my tests.

ESET also has:

  • Advanced diagnostics.
  • Anti-phishing.
  • Data and device encryption.
  • Anti-theft.
  • Network monitor.
  • System cleanup tools.
  • Parental controls.
  • Password manager.
  • Gamer Mode.

ESET’s advanced diagnostics tools are some of the best on my list — they provided a comprehensive list of all of my device’s files, drivers, and registry entries so any expert could easily analyze any changes to my system in an emergency. Advanced Windows PC users will really benefit from these tools and enjoy getting a more in-depth view of their PC’s inner workings. However, the tools are way too complex for the average user.

10. ESET Smart Security Premium — Good Malware Scanning & Advanced DiagnosticsI found ESET’s Network Inspector tool really handy as well. It identifies all the devices connected to your home network and scans them for vulnerabilities. It also alerts you whenever a new device joins your network, so you can see if someone is trying to use your Wi-Fi without your permission. While these are useful features, it’s disappointing that, unlike Norton, Bitdefender, and my other top choices, ESET doesn’t offer a VPN to help protect you online.

I wouldn’t get ESET for its extra features. Its parental controls are pretty lacking, being basically just a content filter — and one that failed to block all flagged content during my tests. Its password manager lacks advanced security features like data breach and dark web monitoring, and its Gamer Mode feature is inferior to Norton in terms of actually improving your device’s performance while gaming.

ESET is a good anti-malware tool with some unique security features — but the best-value ESET Internet Security (RUB2,570 / year) only covers 1 device, and you have to pay extra for each additional device, which can get pretty expensive, pretty fast. ESET also comes with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Bottom Line:

ESET provides secure antivirus protection along with some unique features for advanced users. If comprehensive system usage reports and device encryption tools sound like an appealing extra, then ESET is a great choice. If you have no idea what those features are, then check out one of the other programs on my list.

How to Choose the Best Antiviruses for Windows 10 & 11

  • Look for antiviruses with a good malware detection rate. Look for scores close to 100%, as well as antiviruses that use advanced tools like machine learning and advanced heuristics (like Norton). These tools can detect malware that traditional signature-based scanning methods fail to catch.
  • Opt for an antivirus that includes effective web protections. You need to protect your online activity with features like anti-phishing protection, secure browsers, and anti-tracker tools that really work.
  • Assess the software’s impact on system performance. A good antivirus program operates seamlessly in the background without slowing down your computer. While some processes like a full disk scan can slow down your system somewhat, you should look for an antivirus that won’t drain your resources or cause performance issues. Norton and Bitdefender have the best performance out of all antiviruses on my list.
  • Choose an antivirus that offers a range of innovative features. Internet security tools like data breach monitoring, software updaters, file encryption, game boosters, and identity theft protection aren’t universal — if you need very specific protection, look closely at an antivirus’s features (and make sure that the features actually work).
  • Ensure the package you choose offers a good value overall. Some antivirus programs are very cheap but only provide basic protections, whereas some premium suites charge more but provide a lot more functionality. Make sure to get a product with a money-back guarantee so you can get a refund in case you’re not satisfied with the program.

Quick Guide: How to Use an Antivirus on Windows

  1. Go to your chosen antivirus’s website and navigate to its product page. For example, click on Products & Services on Norton’s website and then click All Products & Services.
  2. Click Buy Now on your desired plan and follow the website’s instructions to pay for your antivirus. Most antiviruses (including Norton and McAfee) come with a 60- or 30-day money-back guarantee, so don’t worry if you’re unsure which plan is right for you. Just pick the one you want to try. Quick Guide: How to Use an Antivirus on Windows
  3. Download your new antivirus program, run the installer, and wait for it to finish. While your antivirus is installing, you’ll have to give the installer permissions and accept licensing agreements, so be sure to stay near your computer until the installation is done.
Note: Most antivirus programs (including Norton and Bitdefender) require an internet connection while they’re installing, so don’t disconnect your computer’s internet. Quick Guide: How to Use an Antivirus on Windows
  4. Get to know your newly installed antivirus app. Navigate through the antivirus’s user interface, and learn where everything is. You can also check out the antivirus’s knowledge base online to learn about the different features. For example, Norton’s online knowledge base provides an in-depth help center with instructions and video guides on how to get started. Quick Guide: How to Use an Antivirus on Windows
  5. Run a virus scan. The best antiviruses on the market let you run a virus scan with one click. Click on the Run Scan button (or a similar alternative), and your antivirus will scan for and remove all malware on your system. Quick Guide: How to Use an Antivirus on Windows
  6. Test out the antivirus’s other features. If available, I recommend running the PC optimization tool, installing the mobile app, and following the antivirus’s instructions to set up the password manager, dark web monitoring, and more (Norton provides all these features).

Top Brands That Didn’t Make the Cut

Some top Windows antivirus brands didn’t make it to my top 10 list despite being recommended by many other review sites:

  • Heimdal. Offers advanced protection at the network layers — blocking malware before it can be delivered to your device. But this software is far too complex for most home users, and it lacks many additional features that other antiviruses provide for the same price.
  • Webroot. Light, fast, and easy-to-use antivirus that has a decent range of features, but its detection rates just weren’t good enough when I was testing it, so I can’t put it with the others on this list.
  • Intego for Windows. A lightweight, powerful, and easy-to-use antivirus with perfect malware detection. However, it’s not so effective at detecting phishing sites, and it lacks a lot of key features that the other antiviruses on this list provide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Doesn’t Windows already have an antivirus installed?

Yes, most Windows computers come pre-installed with Windows Defender, which is much more useful now than it was a few years ago. However, it does not provide the same malware protection that the other antiviruses on this list do.

For protection against ransomware, spyware, adware, and other dangers like phishing and identity theft, Windows Defender won’t help. While Windows Defender is OK for basic protection, it doesn’t protect against any kind of advanced malware.

If you’re extremely careful and don’t have anything important to protect on your PC, Windows Defender is fine. But if you keep any kind of sensitive info on your computer — logins, passwords, banking info, photos, etc. — you should get something guaranteed secure like Norton 360.

Are free antiviruses good enough?

No free antivirus will fully protect all of your data, but there are a few free Windows antiviruses that do a decent job of protecting your PC. They always lack necessary functions that are needed for 100% cybersecurity protection though, like:

  • Web protection.
  • Ransomware protection.
  • Phishing protection.
  • Theft protection.
  • A VPN.
  • Encrypted file storage.
  • Automatic backups.
  • And a lot more…

Antiviruses like Norton and McAfee have a huge range of internet security features and they both make sure your computer and all of your most important data are fully protected from the latest cyber threats.

Will an antivirus slow down my computer?

It depends on how you use your computer. The wrong antivirus will become a problem if:

  • You’re a gamer.
  • You need to use CPU-intensive apps.
  • You own an older computer.
  • You do a lot of online streaming.

All of the antiviruses on this list will run smoothly, quickly, and without performance issues. The top Windows 10 & 11 antivirus of 2023 — Norton 360 — will not slow down your PC system at all, regardless of how you use it.

Which antivirus is best for both Windows and Android/iOS/Mac?

Many antiviruses cover multiple operating systems across Windows, Android, iOS, and Mac devices, including most on this list.

All of these antiviruses have been ranked and rated for Windows, but they all have other OS support which is equally impressive. For instance, my favorite Windows antivirus — Norton 360 Deluxe — includes 5 licenses across all Windows, Android, iOS, and Mac devices.

Why does Windows need antivirus?

To put it simply: Windows is the most popular desktop operating system in the world, which makes it the most popular target for cybercriminals. Malware and other cyber threats have become a fact of life, but the vast majority of them — and the most malicious — are aimed at Windows operating systems.

Windows comes with its own in-built antivirus, Windows Defender, which is a far better version of the software than it used to be. It’s capable of protecting you against a good range of malware threats. However, it’s nowhere near as comprehensive in terms of its security protections as the premium antivirus products on this list.

Our lives are so entangled with the internet nowadays — not fully protecting ourselves from online threats is a risk not worth taking. I’d recommend paying for a premium full-featured internet security suite like Norton 360, which not only protects against all the worst malware, phishing, and other online threats, but also comes with super handy internet security features like a password manager, VPN, and parental controls.

If you don’t want to have to pay any extra, I’d still recommend protecting yourself with more than just Windows Defender. There are a lot of free and cheap antivirus products around, but most of them aren’t very good, so make sure you choose a quality free antivirus that will actually keep you protected. Avira Free Security is my favorite free antivirus in 2023.

What’s the best antivirus for Windows 7?

My recommendation for the best antivirus for Windows 7 is Norton 360. It has perfect malware detection rates as well as a ton of other important and useful security features — plus, it currently has no “end-of-life” date planned for Windows 7 compatibility.

Most of the antiviruses on this list still work with Windows 7, and they are all great products. But make sure you check if Windows 7 is still fully compatible with the antivirus you choose, and for how long. For example, Bitdefender will stop supporting Windows 7 in July 2024, and McAfee has already discontinued its support for Windows 7.

Also bear in mind that Microsoft has already ended its support for Windows 7, so you’ll no longer receive any security updates, which means your PC is far more susceptible to malware than if you had a newer OS. If you’re not able to upgrade to a more recent version of Windows, it’s vital that you use a quality antivirus to keep your PC protected.

What’s the best antivirus for Windows 8?

Norton 360 is my top pick for the best Windows 8 antivirus. It has perfect malware-detection rates, plus a ton of other important security features such as a firewall, anti-phishing protection, Wi-Fi protection, parental controls, a VPN, and much more. But most of the antiviruses on this list work on Windows 8 PCs, and although Norton is my favorite, other products such as Avira and TotalAV are also great options.

Bear in mind that Windows 8 is now a relatively old OS and Microsoft is nearing its end of support for this version, which means an antivirus product will be more important than ever to keep you protected against new and emerging threats. Some antiviruses, such as McAfee and Bitdefender, already only support Windows 8.1 and higher, so it’s worth checking if your chosen antivirus has a planned end-of-support date for your version of Windows before you commit long-term.

What’s the best antivirus for Windows 10?

In my view, Norton 360 is the best antivirus software for Windows 10 users. It not only has perfect malware detection scores, but it also comes with a huge range of excellent extra features such as phishing protection, Wi-Fi protection, a firewall, a VPN, parental controls, a password manager, and heaps more.

However, all of the antiviruses on this list work with Windows 10, and they are all quality products. Depending on your needs, you may find one of the others suits you better. For example, Bitdefender is super lightweight so it causes next to no slowdown, TotalAV’s VPN is one of the best around, or if you’re after a free product, Avira Free Security for Windows is my top choice.

Can I use a Windows antivirus on Android, iOS, and Mac?

It depends — some antiviruses and security packages cover multiple operating systems and some don’t. So if you’re planning on using one of the antiviruses on this list for a different operating system, you should first check to make sure the relevant operating systems are supported.

My top Windows antivirus, Norton, is also my favorite Android and iOS antivirus, and it ranks among the best Mac antiviruses, so it’s a solid choice as an all-in-one security solution. Its 360 Deluxe plan covers up to 5 devices and is compatible with Windows, Android, iOS, and Mac, so you can use it across multiple devices with different operating systems.

Will a Windows 11 antivirus work on Windows 7 and 8?

Many of the antiviruses on this list will work on all Windows versions, including 7, 8, 10, and 11. However, to be on the safe side, you should always check the system requirements for an antivirus before you commit to a purchase. McAfee, for example, supports Windows 11 and Windows 8, but not Windows 7.

If you’re looking for a good antivirus that supports Windows 8.1, Norton would be my recommendation as the best Windows antivirus on the market.

Antivirus for Windows 10 Guide: What to Look for

Antivirus software has thankfully come a long way since the initial days of protection. From malware to ransomware, viruses and other malware types have become tricky little devils that are designed to cause some serious harm.

Fortunately, some really smart people are behind the best internet security software like the ones we reviewed here, and are consistently working to improve their security measures and detection. In fact, some best virus protection for Windows 10 take extreme steps in protecting your Windows computers and your personal data. Also, in case you are running a Chrome OS device, you should get familiar with the best Chromebook antivirus out there.

We’re talking shutting down all available programs when you’re hit with a virus. While the anti-malware does its thing, you can breathe a sigh of relief that any potential threats won’t be able to penetrate and access your data and other important files.

As I mentioned, not all antivirus programs do the same thing. Some focus on key elements while other antivirus products or antivirus provider try to cover a wide range of features and protection for ultimate computer security. There are also those which don’t cost a dime, reviewed in our best free antivirus software post.

In the sections below, I’ll cover some of the most important aspects of anti-virus software so you know exactly what to look for when start to compare brands and different programs.

It’s important to understand your needs. If you’re a hardcore gamer, for example, you might want to invest in an antivirus program that doesn’t interrupt your gameplay with pop-ups.

If you’re a small business owner, identity theft protection is likely at the top of your list. As you will see in the reviews that follow, some of the best antiviruses for Windows 10 focus on this and a whole lot more.

Firewalls, Ransomware Protection, and More

The same goes for several other features, like ransomware protection. Depending on your needs, it’s important that you invest in the best antivirus. So, what is the best antivirus for Windows 10? Let’s read on to find out!

If you have children, you will find these protective features to be especially useful. Plus, McAfee’s parental controls make it easy to manage what your kids can and can’t access.

I felt the controls to be a little antiquated, but they certainly get the job done. And coupled with the built-in password manager, you will find protecting your family to be easier than ever.

I’m quite pleased with the pricing structure of Total Protection. McAfee antivirus apps makes protecting your family or business manageable. There’s an incredible introductory price right now, so you might want to hurry on over and take advantage of it.

From the online backup feature to firewall protection, Norton really went the extra mile to ensure that your computer and personal information remain safe and secure.

If you’re tired of trying to keep track of all of your passwords and logins, you will appreciate the included password manager. This gives you full control over your passwords in the event that there is a breach.

I included Trend Micro’s Antivirus+ Security on principle alone. It simply has so much included with it that will benefit any Windows 10 user.

Some of its independent lab tests weren’t as impressive as other entries I reviewed, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of your consideration.

I feel compelled to mention that this is a great buy for a single person who just needs to protect their home or office computer.

You won’t find any parental controls, so families might want to look elsewhere. Of course, as you’ll learn momentarily, a lack of parental controls is the least of your worries.

In the time I spent with Antivirus+ Security, I found it to be comprehensive and effective. It might not have impenetrable malware protection, but it shines in its fight against ransomware, harmful URLs, and more.

If you like to shop and bank online, this antivirus is definitely worth a look. Thanks to Trend Micro’s Pay Guard, your financial transactions are safe from cyber-threats.

That’s because Pay Guard is its own secure browser, even going so far to add even more protection when you start messing with anything that involves money.

The real downside to Antivirus+ Security, by my estimation, is that its price includes just a single license, with no option for more. This pretty much rules out family protection.

Well, that’s not entirely accurate. You can get more licenses, but you have to switch to Trend Micro’s Internet Security, which costs substantially more than Antivirus+ Security.

Aside from that – and its middling malware lab results – Trend Micro delivers an impressive antivirus suite that should make a fine addition to Windows 10.

Trend Micro Antivirus+ Security Pros

  • A fine option for a single person
  • Hardcore banking protection
  • Tons of bonus features
  • Super-easy interface

Trend Micro Antivirus+ Security Cons

  • No direct option for more licenses

Features:

  • A great option for large families or small businesses thanks to its flexible plans
  • Protection against malicious URLs gives you the edge over phishing attempts
  • Easy-to-use system interface makes it a breeze to manage your protection
  • Small business owners will love the respectable reasonable price for 10 devices
  • Allows for seamless integration with existing anti-virus software

Malwarebytes antivirus logo

If malware is your main concern, let it chew on Malwarebytes. This robust antivirus covers a wealth of protective antivirus services that keep your system clear and Windows 10 running like a champ.

If you are tired of stumbling onto shady websites that attempt to phish your information and personal details, Malwarebytes nips that in the bud.

If you find your way to these aforementioned websites, Malwarebytes will block it immediately, preventing you from even accessing it.

I have to admit, there’s something liberating about being able to browse the web in complete confidence. If you’re the type of person who likes to fiddle around with old video game ROM sites for, ahem, educational purposes, Malwarebytes is your best friend.

Some of the lesser-respected ROM sites are known for being Petri dishes, so it pays to have the proper protection.

The same applies to sites that let you “try out” music for free. And hey, I’m not judging. Millions of people regularly accessing harmful websites without even knowing it.

It just takes one time to cripple your operating system in an attempt to extort money from you. So why not arm yourself with an antivirus that takes the stress out of browsing your favorite websites?

If you have a family, Malwarebytes can save you from some serious headaches. They offer antivirus packages that protect up to 10 devices, so you can rest easy knowing that you, your spouse, and your children are all using the web in safety.

If you’d like to try out Malwarebytes, they have a trial that I still say is the best free antivirus for Windows 10.

Malwarebytes Pros

  • Good pricing structure
  • Excellent free version
  • Solid protection
  • User-friendly

Malwarebytes Cons

  • Phishing defense isn’t always effective

  • Comprehensive advanced features give you peace of mind while using the web
  • Inclusive tech support and live chat means you’re never without help
  • Slick user interface makes it easy to manage Kaspersky’s features

Kaspersky is one of those security suites that gets just about everything right. Sure, its lab tests showed that it could be a fuzz better at detecting malware.

But for the most part, it’s really dang good. I certainly have no complaints, as my time with this antivirus proved to be a positive experience.

Ransomware protection is off the proverbial charts, offering some of the most effective prevention I’ve ever seen. If you run a small business, you will want to give Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows a serious look-see.

I like that there are nice extras that you don’t always get with other security suites. The virtual keyboard, for example, is a great addition for those who are worried about getting hit with a sneaky keylogger.

A free software trial is available, but it’s really rather limited. In fact, it’s not even the same version of Anti-Virus for Windows.

I’m not completely thrilled with the price of this antivirus, but I am thrilled with its performance. The fact that it covers so much ground, and that it does so effectively, makes Kaspersky total security a winner in my book.

Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Pros

  • Loaded with advanced protection
  • Safe and effective
  • Free trial

Kaspersky Anti-Virus for Windows Cons

  • A bit on the pricey side

Features:

  • Avira’s real-time protection keeps you safe from existing and new threats
  • Thanks to a simple yet effective interface, beginners will love Avira
  • Ultra-light software that takes up next-to-no hard drive space
  • Password manager makes it easy to control your logins
  • Money-back guarantee lets you try Avira in confidence

Avira antivirus logo

Avira Anti-virus Pro is an all-around great antivirus option for Windows 10. Where it shines, it shines brightly, with rock-solid protection and a whole gaggle of features that ensure your safety.

Thanks to a streamlined system and a slick user interface, Avira is a cinch to operate. If you suffer from techno-fright, this is an excellent antivirus for beginners. But that’s not to say Avira isn’t for everyone.

Even the most ardent PC user will find plenty to love about this lightweight Antivirus Pro. I appreciate how lightweight the entire program is, as it takes up very little hard drive space.

You certainly won’t have to worry about Avira slowing down your Windows PC performance or laptop in any way. It’s a versatile but powerful little bugger that packs a punch and keeps you safe in the process.

Moreover, you can look forward to Avira helping to ensure that your system performance is still smooth system runs efficiently. There are some nice bonus helpful features, too, that will come in handy for both beginners and veterans alike.

The password manager, for example, takes the hassle out of trying to keep track of all your password combinations. It’s nice being able to control and manage all of your unique logins from a single program.

Avira Antivirus Pro will update all of your programs for you, too. Now you don’t have to manually go through each one to see what’s due.

The price for Avira is right on the money, and there’s even a 30-day guarantee. Other than a subpar VPN service, I can’t find anything to complain about. Avira hit a homerun with Antivirus Pro, and I believe it will serve you well.

Avira Antivirus Pro Pros

Computer Security Advice

The goal of “viruses” these days is to siphon as much money from you as possible. A common form of this attack is called “ransomware.” So it’s not really about crippling your PC to where you can’t use it – at least not forever. Hackers of the modern era want to scare you into sending them money.

So, do you need antivirus for Windows 10? The answer is a resounding “yes.” Allow me to explain.

If you run a business, you are more susceptible to these malware attacks. But that doesn’t mean your home PC isn’t at risk. These snakes try to get anyone vulnerable, so it’s important to protect yourself at all costs.

The good news is that even if you’re infected, the best Windows 10 antivirus programs that I reviewed should be sufficient is vaccinating your PC and freeing you of said infection. So don’t despair if you are faced with a virus.

The important thing to do is research each antivirus until you find the one that is most suitable for your needs. Once you have found it, simply download it, install it, and let it do the rest.

Soon, you should up and running like nothing ever happened.

Trusted Antivirus Protection for Windows 10 Benefits

If you invest in a security suite, you can look forward to a whole host of benefits. These powerful and comprehensive antivirus programs do more than just protect you.

You can safely browse the web without fear of stumbling onto a harmful site. And if you like to shop online, you can rest easy knowing that your transactions are safe from prying eyes and sticky fingers.

This includes your credit card information, personal data, passwords, logins, and more. Many of these suites take things a step further by erasing logs of your financial happenings, preventing anyone from accessing your sensitive records.

And with real-time protection, you and your personal information are safe from newly released threats and attacks.

Malware, Spyware, and Adware Protection

These three are some of the most rampant viruses and threats that make their way into your PC. That’s why I made sure to include only the best security software for Windows 10 that focuses on these attacks.

Each of these is designed with a specific function to prevent your computer and personal data from being accessed. An excellent malware protection is particularly important, as it can lead to serious complications in your system resources.

Anti spyware protection keeps your information and history safe so that there’s no way for cyber-thieves to get their dirty hands on it.

Adware protection is more of a courtesy, as it blocks annoying ads from disrupting your web browsing experience. By investing in an antivirus program that handles all three of these, you can trust that your PC and/or business will be in good hands.

Trust the Antivirus Independent Labs Testing

Independent antivirus testing labs are the lifeblood of the antivirus community. Without their help, we wouldn’t know which antivirus programs are worth the investment.

This is your life we’re talking about here. It’s hard to imagine for some people, but the right attack can quite literally ruin your life. Your identity can get stolen, credit destroyed, and bank accounts wiped out.

This is why it is so important to have the best antivirus software for Windows 10 safeguarding your PC.

How We Tested Malware, Spyware, and Adware Defenses

Every antivirus is subjected to a series of tests to ensure that it is worthy of making the cut. To do this, I use each program with specific URLs that are designed to host malware for testing purposes.

Depending on the number of malware that is successfully blocked by a program, it will either go to the next AV test or be disqualified altogether. I also make note of the other programs that delete the malware mid-download or prevent access to the URL.

It’s important to note that some antivirus for Windows 10 that I tested scored really well with independent tests, but didn’t pass our testing parameters.

Multilayered Malware Protection

As you read this in depth reviews, you will notice that some antivirus programs prevent you from accessing malicious websites. This is just one layer of malware protection.

Another layer is that of vulnerability checks. If you have a program that hasn’t been updated in a long time, it is more vulnerable to getting infected. Thankfully, top-tier anti-virus software scans your system for outdated programs to let you know what needs to be updated.

Some antivirus programs take things a step further by updating the software for you, thus reducing the risk of infection.

And if for some reason you download a program that isn’t recognized as being harmless, your antivirus can shut it down before it has a chance to install.

This sometimes happens when a bad program is hidden within a good one. All of these extra layers of protection work together to ensure that your computer has effective Windows 10 security.
