The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch».
Causes:
There are multiple potential causes for this message:
- The patch file is corrupted.
- The software being patched is missing or is a different version from what the patch requires.
- Potential multiple program entries in the Windows registry
- Insufficient permissions to access Autodesk program folders.
- Security settings (or Antivirus tools) are blocking the installation.
Solution:
Check the following to enable the update/service pack to be installed:
- Confirm that the correct service pack was downloaded. Verify the following points:
- The patch matches the product version (year).
- The patch version is compatible with the system — 32 or 64-bit installers.
- Confirm the software that is being patched is installed first.
- Note: Patches cannot be installed before the product installation.
- Note: Hotfixes cannot be installed before service packs. For example, 2021.1.1 requires 2021.1 to be installed first.
- Note: Many patches and hotfixes can be rerun with a ‘repair’ option if the installer is not detecting them as installed. This can already fix the problem.
- Confirm that the software that is being patched is not already patched.
- Navigate to Control Panel > Programs and Features, and check the program version number in the program list.
- Check View Installed Updates on this menu page to see if a separate update/service pack is listed for the program).
- Increase permissions to the following folders by adding the user and providing full control to the Autodesk folders:
- C:Program FilesAutodesk
- C:ProgramDataAutodesk
- C:Users<User>AppDataLocalAutodesk or %LocalAppData%Autodesk
- C:Users<User>AppDataRoamingAutodesk or %AppData%Autodesk

- Reduce security settings:
- Disable User Account Control settings.
- Disable Antivirus software.
- Check the Windows Programs list if the application is listed multiple times or not at all.
- Use the Autodesk Uninstall Tool to remove the program or the MS Fixit tool.
- If the above suggestions still do not enable the patch to be installed, it may be corrupt or not fully downloaded. Re-download the service pack file from Autodesk Account.
- Sometimes, the application being patched must be reinstalled before the patch can be installed. This is often the best solution with the Vault server as some service packs cannot be uninstalled and reinstalled unless the Vault server is uninstalled.

Attempts to patch a ClearCase or ClearQuest release area on a Microsoft® Windows® platform with a fix pack, iFix or Service Release results in the following error:
The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade patch.
Note: The program, version, and upgrade patch may appear to be correct.
Cause
- The patch install command being used to apply the update to a release area is incorrect.
For example, the following command specifies an incorrect .msi file:
C:>msiexec /p <patch-dir>patch.mcksr1.637.msp /a <release_area>Setup
isscript.msi /lv* <patch-dir>install.logIn this example, the file <release_area>Setupisscript.msi is incorrect. - This error also occurs while attempting to apply a 7.0.0.1 iFix to a release area that has been created for 7.0.
- A fix pack is being installed before the prerequisite interim fixes (ifixes).
Resolving The Problem
Solution 1
Ensure that you are specifying the correct MSI file when attempting to patch the release area.
From the above ClearCase example, the correct command is:
C:>msiexec /p <patch-dir>patch.mcksr1.637.msp /a <release-area>Setup
clearcase.msi /lv* <patch-dir>install.log
Solution 2
Upgrade the 7.0 release area to 7.0.0.1 (Fix Pack 1) prior to applying a 7.0.0.1 update.
Solution 3
Install the prerequisite interim fixes before installing the fix pack.

It is important to read the requirements of the patch. If you install a Cumulative Update without consulting the requirements or the update is interrupted during the process, this can be very dangerous for the Exchange Server operation and also for the health and consistency of the data. You wouldn’t want to end up with the flooding of errors in your Event Viewer, services not starting, people unable to send or receive emails, and a potential corruption of data.
- Check with the Compatibility Matrix and Check AD Schema
You need to check the server Cumulative Update level with the compatibility matrix on Microsoft’s site and also ensure that the Active Directory schema is also upgraded. Exchange Server relies heavily on the Active Directory service. In such updates, the schema would need to be upgraded and modified beforehand (see the below example).

- DAG Requirements
If you are installing on a Database Availability Group (DAG), you must ensure that all the services and clients have been failed over to the other server/s. You must also ensure to put the server in maintenance mode. This is also applicable to standalone servers. This can be done by first draining the hub transport service.
Set-ServerComponentState -Identity <server name> -Component HubTransport -State Draining -Requester Maintenance
This will put the server in maintenance mode. You can verify this by running the below command.
Get-ServerComponentState <server name> | Select Component, State
This will ensure that the service is solely available to the update and no user will be able to use it until the patches are installed.
To Conclude
You must always have a contingency plan in place as there could always be a possibility of an issue with the update, human error, or hardware issue during the installation. This will ensure the recovery of service if any issue occurs.
Installing patches on Exchange Server and any other service can always have a catastrophic outcome. It is important to always have a maintenance window with all the contingency plans in hand. The most important one is to have a backup when installing such updates, which could be critical to your Exchange Server’s health. trying to install an update patch for Citrix xendesktop 7.5 and the error when I click on the msi patch is «the upgrade patch cannot be installed by the windows installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade patch
may update a different version of the program»The application was installed 2 days prior and works fine but the patch will not install.
Any ideas?

Yes let’s see if there is any error occurs in installation log.
Meanwhile from the error message, the possible cause is that a part of the application is missing such as a registry key with app version. In this situation you can first test to reinstall/repair the application though it is still working fine — see if issue
persists after reinstall the app.Meanwhile you could also contact Citrix about this issue. It may be a common issue and Citrix may provide a quick fix for it.

Resolution
Tell the Windows Installer to which product the patch should
applied, using /package option as shown in the following example:

- «ProductCode» is the GUID found by the manual inspection of the Microsoft Windows registry keys found at:

the top of this key, search using Edit | Find and use the words «Micro
Focus Reflection Desktop» or «Micro Focus InfoConnect Desktop»When
you find the value on the right side of the Registry Editor, note the
GUID highlighted on the left side of the Registry Editor. This is the
value to use as the ProductCode.
- «patch.msp» is the name of the actual MSP or patch file.
As a workaround, totally remove Reflection or InfoConnect Desktop and
reinstall using the default GUID, so the product can be patched and updated without taking the steps above.
Cause
This error message can result if the product’s Globally Unique Identifier (GUID) has been changed during install from the default value typically supplied by the product.
A GUID is a 128-bit integer number used by developers working with Microsoft Windows technologies to identify specific resources, where a truly unique identifier is required, and are also used to identify all interfaces and objects in COM programming. All Micro Focus software products, which install under the Microsoft Windows operating system, have a unique default GUID which is assigned to each version, and this GUID is used during the upgrade and patching process to determine if a specific Hotfix, Update, Service Pack, or new version can be installed on the existing product version.

XP Service Pack 2 just installed — now taskbar missing!
