Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was an Austrian musician and composer. He lived from 1756 to 1791. He started composing at the age of five and wrote more than 600 pieces of music. He was only 35 years old when he died.

Очень часто глагол в past simple имеет окончание -ed (у правильных глаголов):

• I work in a travel agency now. Before that I worked in a department store.

• We invited them to our party, but they decided not to come.

Но многие глаголы являются неправильными. Past simple, в таком случае, не оканчивается на -ed. Например:

В вопросительных и отрицательных предложениях мы используем did/didn’t + инфинитив (enjoy/see/go и др.):

• A: Did you go out last night?
  B: Yes, I went to the cinema, but I didn’t enjoy the film much.
  A: Ты ходил куда-нибудь вчера вечером?
  B: Да, я ходил в кино, но фильм мне не очень понравился.
• ‘When did Mr Thomas die?’ ‘About ten years ago.’
  ‘Когда умер Мистер Томас?’ ‘Около десяти лет назад.’
• They didn’t invite her to the party, so she didn’t go.
  Они не пригласили ее на вечеринку, поэтому она и не пошла.
• ‘Did you have time to write the letter?’ ‘No, I didn’t.’

В следующих примерах, do — главный глагол предложения (did … do / didn’t do):

• What did you do at the weekend? (not What did you at the weekend?)
  Чем ты занимался на выходных?
• I didn’t do anything. (not I didn’t anything)
  Я ничего не делал.

Прошедшие формы глагола to be (am/is/are) это was/were:

Заметьте, что мы не используем did в отрицаниях и вопросах с was/were:

• I was angry because they were late.
  Я разозлился/был зол, потому что они опоздали. (досл.: были опоздавшими)
• Was the weather good when you were on holiday?
  Погода была хорошей, когда вы были в отпуске?
• They weren’t able to come because they were so busy.
  Они не могли (досл.: не были способны) прийти, потому что были очень заняты.
• Did you go out last night or were you too tired?

JACK BAINES

Jack Baines
is a self-made millionaire, but his beginnings were very lowly. He
was the youngest of eight children. His father had a job in the
cotton mills of Blackburn, Lancashire in the 1920s, but he was often
unable to work due to poor health. The family couldn’t afford to
pay the rent or bills, and the children often went hungry. After
leaving school at the age of 14, Jack was wondering what to do when
Mr. Walker, his old teacher, offered to lend him $100 to start his
own business.

It was just after the war. Raw
materials were scarce, and Jack without listening to his parents’
advice saw a future in scrap metal. He bought bits of metal and
stored them in an old garage. When he had built up a sizeable amount,
he sold it to local industries for a vast profit.

Jack enjoyed working hard and
was encouraged to make the most of his potential by Mr. Walker. After
one year he had succeeded in repaying the $100 loan and he also
managed to give Mr. Walker $100 interest to thank him for his
generosity.

By the time Jack was 30 years
old he had made his first million, and he wanted to celebrate this
achievement by doing something “grand”. With all his money it was
now possible to build a beautiful home for himself and his parents.
In 1959 “Baines Castle” was built in the heart of Lancashire
countryside. It was one of the finest buildings in the county.

Jack has recently sold “Baines
Steel” but he still can’t get used to living the good life. He
can often be found at the local pub drinking pints with the locals.

“I remember being very poor
as a child but never unhappy”, says Jack, “and I never forget
where I come from and who I am”.

Lancashire people are proud of
their local hero, and if a visitor asks the origin of the “grand”
castle on the hill the locals say “Why, it’s the house that Jack
built”.
