I have recently tried to install Python 3.4 as an alternative installation on my system in an attempt to familiarise myself before migrating code. My main Python installation is 2.7.6.

I tried the 64 bit installer for Windows, but it came up with an error message

There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.

After this the install is rolled back (from the point shown below):

I have eventually found a solution to this posted below and decided to share in case anyone else was having the same issue.

After some looking online I found (here) that the issue was related to conflicting pip installs (I have a version already installed for Python 2.7 and apparently this is not compatible with the version that ships with Python 3.4.

To get around this issue I simply de-selected pip from the install options shown below and the install went ahead smoothly:

Run installer again and select PIP installation.

If the PIP fails to install with the same error, you may want to check environmental variables using a tool like http://eveditor.com/ which enables to check whether they are valid. If you had another version installed before, you most likely have wrong PYTHONHOME and PYTHONPATH variables. Fix them by setting them to relevant paths. e.g. PYTHONHOME=C:python27 and PYTHONPATH=c:python27Lib

You will then be able to run and install PIP.

My issue was that I had a PYTHON_HOME or PYTHON_SOMETHING environment variable set. After removing the environment variable, the installation worked perfectly.

What worked for me, strangely enough, was the «Microsoft Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter»

The «deselect pip» solution did not work for me.

My Python 3.4.1 install was failing with the same «A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected» error. I tried both installing it on top of Python 3.4.0 and installing it in a new folder, but got the same error. I tried uninstalling Python 3.4.0 first, but got the error during the uninstall, as well.

I ran that Microsoft utility, which helped me uninstall 3.4.0, and was then able to install 3.4.1 cleanly. The utility has options for both problematic installs and uninstalls, so it may help even if you’re doing a new install, not an upgrade.

I’m running 64-bit Windows 7, but was working with 32-bit Python versions.

I had similar issues with Python 3.4x on Windows 8.1. Even after a successful install, the uninstaller would fail in the same way. Ultimately, «Method 1» at the MS forum solved this for me when I ran Microsoft’s (Un)installer Fix It.

I also had the problem that pip couldn’t be installed like @ChrisPosser.

So I deselected pip and the installation went fine. afterwards I restarted the setup, chose «change python» and installed pip. now everything worked like expected.

If you have any problems with windows installers I recommend activating the verbose log like this:

msiexec /i python-2.7.10-1.609.2.msi /lv install-python.log

From the logs I could see that it was the pip install, which was not working.

Yes, I faced the same issue, and was working on this for the past one hour. Was trying to uninstall the Python 3.4.1 from the control panel -> uinstall program -> add/remove program, but was facing issues.

This trick worked for me:

Manually deleted the 3.4.1 folder, which was present in my C folders after I installed the 3.4.1

Then I followed these steps:

-> Went to Regedit.exe, checked in both HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL SOFTWARE Folder, and deleted the Python folders there.
-> windows 8 -> Downloads -> 3.4.1 msi setup (Glad I never deleted it)
-> Right clicked on the msi setup and choose the repair option
-> The repair would re install the Python 3.4.1
-> After this, I un-installed the Python 3.4.1
-> Then I deleted the 3.4.1 msi setup.

Rebooted the system, and now, there is no instance of Python 3.4.1 in my system.

According to me when environment variables containing name ‘Python’ are created they somehow becomes related with python. I was unable to open idle (GUI PUTHON) and to uninstall it . Deleting a variable named ‘PYTHON PATH’ solved my all python related problems.

I had 3.7.4 and wanted to move to 2.7.13.
I uninstalled 3.7.4
Tried to install 2.7.13 but got the same error.
There was a 2.7.10 installer(not msi) also present, uninstalling which gave the same error.
So I downloaded 2.7.10 msi, installed it, and then just installed 2.7.13 from the downloaded msi and it worked fine. This overwriting worked because the major version i.e. 2.7 was same for both.

I don’t know if this is helpful but after the hours I spent on this, I wanted to write out what worked for me.

Yup, I have already installed another version of python. I have uninstalled them using Program features. But still the same issue persisted because of the folder which was present in my C: drive. After deleting them manually, the installation got completed without errors

I faced this issue because of 2 conflicting versions of 7zip. Removing them both and installing just one fixed this issue.

I had python3.4 installed, then added 3.5, and deleted 3.4. That was a mistake. In trying to get a library to work, I had to go back to 3.4. I uninstalled 3.5, but couldn’t uninstall 3.4 (folder deleted).

I ended up searching the registry in rededt32 for «python». There was a Guid folder with a number of entries that had c:python34 and one more related to the same folder that I deleted. After this, the install worked correctly.

Mine was linked to having installed an older version in the past, only for my own user account. I got around it by telling the installer to install Python for all users.

For me none of the suggested fixes worked for me. However checking the option «Install just for me» instead of «Install for all users» (Windows 10) worked for me. So this might be another option to try.

I was running: Python 2.7.11 (v2.7.11:6d1b6a68f775, Dec 5 2015, 20:32:19) [MSC v.1500 32 bit (Intel)] on win32 Type "help", "copyright", "credits" or "license" for more information. I downloaded the msi for Python 2.7.12 and attempted to run it. During the installation it gave me the following error: "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." Then it "rolls back" the action, which killed my current 2.7.11 installation. Despite that it states: "Python 2.7.12 setup ended prematurely because of an error. Your system has not been modified. To install this program at a later time, please run the installation again." (pardon any typos in the error messages since I wasn't able to copy the text directly.) I attempted this twice with the same result. Thanks, Tom

What happens if you first uninstall 2.7.11 and then install 2.7.12?

Or if you first repair 2.7.11 and then install 2.7.12. This error often happens because your pip installation is corrupt, and then pip fails to uninstall itself which aborts the whole installation. Generally repairing the install before uninstalling resolves it.

@Steve, I think my pip install was fine? I was using pip pretty regularly with 2.7.11. I had to do a restore to get 2.7.11 working again, and after an install of 2.7.12 failed again with the same issue.

Ok, so really bizarre. I uninstalled 2.7.11, then I was getting the same error with the 2.7.11 msi. So I was thinking that I should go back to the original version I had installed (2.7.10) the installer showed a "repair" option so I did that, then the 2.7.11 install worked. And then the 2.7.12 installer worked. I would have to agree with Steve Dower. I think that it had something to do with pip because there were a couple cmd windows that popped up during the install process that showed something to do with pip which didn't the first time I ran the installer.

I am on Windows 7 x64, trying to install Python 2.7.5 or 3.3.2. But I’m continuously getting an error showing:

There is a problem with this Windows installer package. A DLL required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your package vendor.

I have freshly downloaded the installer package from Python.org several times but it is giving the same error repeatedly.

I think this might work:

Go to C:/Users/XXX/AppData/Local/Temp or simply %LocalAppData%/Temp.
Go to Properties → Security
Change permission level for everyone to FULL ACCESS.

Run cmd.exe (run as administrator)
Go to Python’s location (example: D:python) by changing the directory
Write msiexec /i filename.msi, e.g. msiexec /i python-3.4.1.amd64.msi
Then Enter

I had extraneous Python environment variables from previous installations. You should delete any Python environment variables and retry.

I installed an older version (Python 3.4.3) and it worked fine.

(Fully updated Windows 8.1 64-bit PC, and I tried several of the newer versions, none worked. I also ran a Virus scan, and disabled Antivirus, same error.)

I was just trying to install 32 bit version on x64. Tried again with correct version and problem solved.

The automatic download I was given for Windows was the 32-bit version, not the 64-bit version. I scrolled down through all the releases, found 2.7.13 (most recent version as of 10/Aug/17), and specifically downloaded the 64-bit version;

Once I had downloaded the 64-bit version I installed with no issues.

Подскажите пожалуйста как действовать, ситуация следующая:
есть «якобы» установленный питон версии 2.7.11. Якобы, потому что по пути который указан в ярлыке ничего не находится (точнее его вообще не существует). При попытке запуска, получаю сообщение:
The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable. Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package ‘python-2.7.11.msi’ in the box below.
У меня не имеется никого пакета: python-2.7.11.msi.
Скачал с оф. сайта python-2.7.11.msi, пробовал указывать скаченный пакет, появляется окно с сообщение что неподходящий пакет для Python 2.7.11.
Тогда пытаюсь удалить с ПК эту версию через «программы и компоненты», получаю сообщение:
There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor.
Тут я не совсем понимаю что от меня хотят.
Попробовал установить другую версию питона на ПК, установил Python 3.6. Теперь при запуске появляется окно с ошибкой:
«Ошибка при запуске приложения (0xc000007b). Для выхода из приложения нажмите кнопку ОК».

Most of the time, Windows applications install smoothly onto your device. This is why many users panic when seeing the “There is a problem with this Windows installer package” error during the installation process of popular apps such as iTunes, Unreal Engine, and even Adobe Acrobat Reader.

There’s nothing to worry about — in this guide, you will learn how to fix this error even if you’re not tech-savvy.

Causes of the “There is a problem with this Windows installer package” error

Even though there’s no single sure cause of this error, most users have reported the following as the leading cause of installer package error:

You have an outdated or damaged installer file. You might be trying to install an application with an old or corrupted installer file. This doesn’t allow the app to install properly, causing the error.
You downloaded the wrong package. Some systems are 32-bit, while others are 64-bit. You need to make sure to download the right bit version of the installer package in order to match your system’s bit version.
Your computer doesn’t meet the minimum requirements. Some applications may return the “There is a problem with this Windows installer package” error if your computer doesn’t meet the minimum system requirements to run the app.
Your Windows is not updated. Many issues can arise from an outdated system. Some users reported that updating Windows fixed this error.
You don’t have full access to the installation folder. Permissions are very important when operating a PC. It’s possible that you chose an installation directory that you don’t have full access to, meaning that the installer can’t create necessary files to finish the install process.

Fixed “There is a problem with this Windows installer package”

After identifying the possible causes, you can begin troubleshooting. There are various methods you can try.

Method 1: Make sure you have administrative permissions

If you lack the appropriate permissions to install applications, you can easily run into the error of this article. If you’re using a public or work computer, this is normal — you’re most likely not an administrator. Make sure to contact the administrator and ask them for help.

However, if this issue occurs on your personal device, here’s what you can do to give yourself administrator permissions.

Click on the Windows icon in your taskbar and select Settings.
Click on Accounts.
Choose Family & other users from the menu on the left.
Select your account, then click on Change account type.
Choose the Administrator option from the drop-down menu and click OK.
Locate the installer file then right-click on it and choose Run as administrator.

Method 2: Use the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter

Microsoft has a free to download troubleshooter that aims to help with installation issues. Here’s how you can get it.

Navigate to this Microsoft website and click on the Download button.
Launch the file you just downloaded.
Click Next, then choose Installing.
Select the application you want to install or choose Not listed and browse your computer manually to locate the installer file.
Wait for the troubleshooter to identify issues and help you install the application.

Please note that the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter isn’t perfect and might not be able to identify an issue. In this case, we recommend you attempt our other methods listed on this page to get rid of the error.

Method 3: Repair the software

There’s a possibility that the application you’re trying to update can’t install because it’s corrupted. When this happens, simply repair the app using these steps.

Click on the Windows icon in your taskbar and select Settings.
Click on Apps and wait for your system to load your installed applications.
Select the problematic application and click on Modify.
Choose the Repair option and follow the on-screen instructions to repair the application.
Try installing now to see if the error still appears.

Method 4: Re-register Windows Installer

The Windows Installer is a key component for installing applications on your device. While you can’t simply repair or uninstall it like other apps, you can use the command prompt to re-register it and possibly fix related issues.

Press the Windows + R keys on your computer at the same time to open Run.
Type in “cmd” and hit the Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys at the same time. This will launch the Command Prompt with Administrator permissions.
Input the following commands, pressing Enter after each line:

msiexec.exe /unregister
msiexec.exe /regserver

Close the Command Prompt and check if the installer runs properly.

Method 5: Restart the Windows Installer service

If re-registering Windows Installer didn’t work, try restarting the service. This will give your computer a chance to properly restart the service. To do that, follow the next steps.

Press the Windows + R keys on your computer at the same time to open Run.
Type in “services.msc” and click on the OK button. This is going to launch Services, which should display every available service on your computer.
Locate the Windows Installer service, then right-click on it and choose Stop.
Wait a minute, then right-click Windows Installer and choose Start.
Restart your computer and attempt the installation again.
