I live in Budapest, in a flat in the center of town,

in the three-storey building,

on the third floor.

It’s a typical Hungarian building with a courtyard and a big stairwell.

There’s no lift, unfortunately,

which means I have to stagger up three flights of stairs every day,

a couple of times a day.

It’s quite a small flat —

I don’t remember how many square metros it is

but it’s pretty small.

Я живу в Будапеште, в квартире в центре города,

на третьем этаже,

на третьем этаже здания.

Это типичное венгерское здание с двориком и большой лестницей.

К сожалению, там нет лифта,

а раз так, то мне приходится каждый день взбираться на три лестничных пролета

раза два в день.

Квартира совсем маленькая,

не помню сколько в ней  квадратных метров, но она очень маленькая.

There’s a living room, where we sleep, which I share with my flat-mate,

who is a Hungarian student.

It’s her flat, so that’s quite good.

I pay her rent, but fortunately I don’t have to pay any of the electricity or gas bills,

although I pay the phone bill

because I’m always calling England,

which makes it very expensive.

So, in the main room there’s a huge old brick stove,

which keeps us good and warm and is very efficient ,

and as the flat’s quite small it’s not expensive to keep it well heated in winter.

This makes a big change from some other flats I’ve lived in, like in London

where I was freezing cold in the winter with no fires or heating of any sort.

Then there is a bed and also a sofa-bed, where I sleep,

which you can pull out and change from a sofa into a double-size bed.

There’re two huge cupboards.

One of them is quite modern,

and the other one is an old-style white cupboard

with a large oval mirror built into it.

We also have a desk, where I work.

I have a typewriter on it, which I borrowed from a friend who(m) I used to work with at the newspaper offices,

so now I can work from home.

We’ve got a color TV, which is nice,

with about 29 or 30 different channels.

Then we’ve got about four blocks of shelves,

which are mainly full of language books and books on Hungarian literature.

We’ve got a telephone as well, which is something,

I think, that people in England take that for granted, but I realize that in Hungary it can be quite difficult to get one as you can be on the waiting list

for a long time, so we’re lucky to have that.

Там есть жилая комната, где мы спим, я делю ее с соседкой по квартире,

она — венгерская студентка.

Квартира эта ее, что очень хорошо.

Я плачу ей квартплату, но, к счастью, мне не надо платить за электричество или газ,

хотя я плачу за телефон,

потому что часто звоню в Англию,

а это намного увеличивает счет.

Итак, в большой комнате есть огромная кирпичная печь,

которая дает нам тепло и уют, она очень мощная.

а поскольку квартира маленькая, то отапливать ее зимой обходится не очень дорого. Это сильно отличает квартиру от тех, в которых я жила в Лондоне,

где я  замерзала зимой без отопления или камина.

Есть еще кровать, а также диван-кровать, на котором я сплю.

Его можно разложить и превратить в двуспальную кровать.

Есть еще два огромных серванта.

Один из них довольно современный,

а другой — старомодный белый посудный шкаф

с большим овальным встроенным зеркалом.

У нас также есть письменный стол, за которым я работаю.

У меня на нем стоит пишущая машинка, которую я взяла у подруги, когда работала в газете, так что теперь я могу работать дома.

У нас есть хороший цветной телевизор,

в нем примерно 29 или 30 различных каналов. Есть у нас и четыре блока книжных полок, заполненных, в основном, книгами по иностранным языкам и по венгерской литературе.

У нас есть телефон, а это нечто,

что, я думаю, в Англии считается само собой разумеющимся,

но, как я поняла, в Венгрии это может оказаться большой проблемой, потому что можно простоять в очереди на его получение очень долго, так что нам повезло, что у нас он есть.

The other room used to be a kitchen,

but my flat-mate’s dad has converted it into a kind of study room.

There’s a big table in there where we usually eat breakfast and supper.

There’s quite a strange setup in the room really,

because it has tiles on the floor,

so it looks like a cross between a bathroom,

a kitchen and a living room.

It’s also got a lot of shelves with books on them,

and some plants which I brought from the last flat that I lived in.

Oh, and there are also quite a lot of plants in the living room as well. Then we’ve got a kind of kitchen — well, it’s a little cupboard really — which has a stove, a washing up basin, a couple of little cupboards and some shelves.

но отец моей соседки по комнате превратил ее в подобие кабинета.

Там стоит большой стол, где мы обычно завтракаем и ужинаем.

Интерьер в этой комнате действительно странный, потому что на полу — кафель,

так что комната похожа на гибрид ванной,

кухни и жилой комнаты.

Там также есть много полок с книгами,

и несколько растений, которые я привезла из последней квартиры, где я жила.

Да, и в гостиной комнате тоже много растений.

Есть у нас и что-то вроде кухни,

на самом деле, это маленький  шкаф, там только плита, мойка, пара маленьких шкафчиков и несколько полок.

Then we’ve got a bathroom, which is also quite small, with rather lurid pink tiles in it,

which has a bath, a toilet and a washbasin,

and also a Hungarian washing machine,

which leaps around all over the bathroom and gets very violent, so we have to watch it when it’s on.

There is a big boiler to heat up the water, too.

We also have a vacuum cleaner,

(which we usually call a «Hoover» in England),

and there is a large metal stepladder

(but I’m not sure why it is there),

and there are a lot of cupboards as well,

full of shoes and old newspapers and saucepans and all kinds of rubbish.

У нас есть еще ванная комната, тоже довольно маленькая, с кафелем странного розового цвета, с ванной, унитазом и раковиной, а также с венгерской стиральной машиной, которая скачет и ведет себя очень грубо, поэтому за ней надо следить, когда она работает.

Там же стоит и бойлер для нагрева воды.

Кроме того, у нас есть пылесос,

(который мы в Англии обычно называем «Гувер») и большая железная лестница-стремянка (не знаю, почему она там),

там же полно всяких шкафчиков

с обувью, старыми газетами, кастрюлями и прочим хламом.

We’ve also got a very narrow balcony,

which you could sit on but you can’t do much else with,

and we’ve got big French windows that lead out onto the balcony.

The view is of a hotel opposite,

so it’s not really the most beautiful view,

and you can almost see into the hotel rooms,

and unfortunately they can see back into ours

so we’ve put net curtains up to keep out visitors,

as we’ve had incidences of people, tourists, taking pictures.

I don’t know what they’re interested in, maybe they think they’re taking pictures of Hungarians eating breakfast or something like that.

У нас есть также очень узкий балкон,

на котором можно только сидеть и больше ничего,

а на балкон выходит большое французское окно.

Оно открывает вид на гостиницу напротив,

не самый приятный вид.

Можно буквально заглядывать в гостиничные номера, к сожалению, оттуда они тоже могут заглядывать в наши комнаты, поэтому мы повесили тюлевые шторы, чтобы скрыться от непрошенных взглядов, потому что были случаи, когда туристы нас фотографировали.

Не знаю, что их так заинтересовало, может быть, они думали, что фотографируют венгров за завтраком или что-то в этом роде.

As our flat is so small, it’s cheap and easy to keep warm,

and also quite easy to keep clean.

However, on the other hand,

there’s not much space, as there’s only one room really to speak of.

It’s right in the middle of the city, so it’s very quick to get to from anywhere,

and is near to different metro lines,

the red line and the blue line, so you can get to any part of the city.

Так как наша квартира маленькая, то ее дешево и легко отапливать,

а также легко содержать в чистоте.

Но с другой стороны,

места в ней не слишком много, потому что в действительности можно говорить только об одной комнате. Квартира в самом центре, поэтому до нее очень быстро добираться отовсюду, и она рядом с разными линиями метро, с красной и голубой линиями, так что и от нас можно добраться до любой части города.

My ideal flat or house would be, I suppose, somewhere not quite so central,

but then I would like to have a car

so that I could get in and out of town quickly.

I would like to have a house, ideally with a garden

so that I could have pets, maybe dogs and cats,

and do gardening and grow plants.

I’d like quite a few rooms in the house

so that I could use one room as an office,

which would be nice as I find it difficult to work in the same room as I normally live in,

because there’s always a temptation to switch on the TV or to go and make a cup of coffee.

So, I have to be very disciplined, or else have a separate room for working

where I wouldn’t be distracted by outside interference

or by my own laziness.

Моя идеальная квартира или дом, я полагаю, должны быть не где-то в центре,

но тогда мне бы хотелось иметь машину,

чтобы быстро добираться в город и из города. Хотелось бы, чтобы в этом идеальном доме был сад,

чтобы можно было держать собак и кошек,

заниматься садом и выращивать растения.

В доме должно быть несколько комнат,

чтобы я могла использовать одну комнату как кабинет, это было бы неплохо, потому что мне трудно работать в той же комнате, где я постоянно живу, потому что все время хочется включить телевизор или пойти и приготовить чашку кофе. Поэтому мне нужно быть очень дисциплинированной или же иметь отдельный кабинет для работы, где меня ничто не отвлекало бы снаружи,

и не мешала бы собственная лень.

I’d also like to have a nice view,

maybe a view of the river, and fresh air,

so maybe to be up in the hills.

I’ve always been used to living by water,

and in Hungary I really miss being near the sea.

I don’t know what it is,

but there’s something I like about living on an island.

It’s just so nice to be able to go out to the seaside and get some fresh air.

Мне хотелось бы также иметь приятный вид из окна, может быть, на реку, и много свежего воздуха, поэтому дом может быть где-то в горах. Я привыкла всегда жить у воды, и в Венгрии я по-настоящему скучаю по жизни у  моря.

Не знаю, что это,

но есть для меня что-то привлекательное в жизни на острове.

Это здорово, когда можно пойти на берег моря и подышать свежим воздухом.

 I live in a small town near Moscow. I live in a big block of flats near the
centre of the town. Our flat is on the second floor. There are only three
rooms in my flat, but they are quite large. My own room is rather large. It
is warm and very comfortable. It is very quiet, loo. There is one window
in my room. It is opposite the door. There are lovely yellow curtains on
the window. In the middle of the room there is a navy blue carpet. It
makes the room comfortable. There is a desk in the comer of the room.
There is a wardrobe with many clothes in it to the right of the window.
Everything is in order in the wardrobe. There is a bed near the door. There
is a big brown bookcase between the bed and the desk. We have got a
kitchen. It is rather small. It is on the same floor. It is next to my parents’
bedroom. There is a lovely yard near our house. There is a sports ground
in the yard. There are many trees behind our house. There is a shop oppo-
site our house. We often buy food there. We don’t have a forest or a park
