Здраствуйте тафферы даркфейта. Нужна ваща помощь.
Thief gold не хочет устанавливать. Пишет типа
» this product cannot be installed on windows nt due to a microsoft directx tm limitation»

запусти в режиме совместимости с windows 98/95 (в свойствах файла setup.exe)

0. Забей вообще на инсталлятор.
1. Скопируй на хард папку THIEF с обоих дисков. Если будут файлы с одинаковыми именами, они должны быть одинаковыми, так что без разницы, с какого диска их оставлять. Папку THIEF после этого можно переименовать в ThiefGold или во что угодно ещё.
2. Внутри этой папки создай папку RES и перемести в неё все файлы *.CRF .
3. Создай текстовый файл INSTALL.CFG следующего содержания:

;cd_path X:
install_path .
language english
resname_base .RES
load_path .
script_module_path .
movie_path .MOVIES

Примечания: 1. Точка с запятой перед cd_path — чтобы не просил диск.
2. Обязательна пустая строчка в конце.
3. Файл должен называться именно INSTALL.CFG, а не INSTALL.CFG.TXT, как это любит делать Блокнот.

4. DDFIX и прочие патчи по вкусу.

Compatibility errors

Error messages such as «This app can’t run on your PC» or «The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you’re running».
Compatibility error messages can also occur if attempting to run a 64-bit program on a 32-bit version of Windows (see Determine which version of Windows is installed).

DOS games

Use DOSBox. Some games may need an unofficial build in order to work correctly.

16-bit Windows games

These games will never run natively on 64-bit versions of Windows. Some games can be run using winevdm for Windows or win3mu. Other solutions include dual booting and virtualization.

32-bit Windows games with 16-bit installers

The solution for 64-bit versions of Windows varies depending on how the installer works. Pre-made solutions are available for many games (see the individual game pages for details).

Copy CD folder

Some games include the complete game folder on the CD rather than having it compressed into an installer archive. Simply copying this folder may be enough to have a working installation of the game for certain titles (mainly games from the late 1990s).

InstallShield

InstallShield games include _inst32i.ex_ in the installation files. Use InstallShield Wrapper or replace with a 32-bit setup executable (InstallShield 2, InstallShield 3, InstallShield 5).

Other single-file installer

Some single-file installers can be extracted using Universal Extractor.

Install through 32-bit Windows

If all else fails the game will need to be installed on a 32-bit version of Windows and then copied to the 64-bit system. Some games need registry keys to work correctly so those may need to be copied over as well.

Errors like this are common when installing or playing Windows 95-era games on modern versions of Windows.
Run in compatibility mode
  1. Right-click the .exe or shortcut file.
  2. Choose Properties from the menu.
  3. Go to the Compatibility tab in the window that appears.
  4. Check the box next to «Run this program in compatibility mode for:»
  5. Choose Windows 95 (or another version listed as supported in the game’s requirements).
  6. Click OK to apply the change. Run the file again normally.

Notes

This method will not work for some games (see the individual game pages for game-specific workarounds).

Setup hanging / not starting

Specific modern applications can keep old installers from working. Usually the setup can be found running but not progressing in the Task Manager, since it will indefinitely wait for specific tasks to finish.
32-bit setups in particular are prone to suffering from this issue.

Prominent culprits are:

  • Logitech Gaming Software (logitechg_discord.exe)
  • NVIDIA Experience (nvcontainer.exe)

Terminating the processes that cause the hangup will allow the setup to continue normally.

Windows 10[1]
  1. Open up the Task Manager and switch to the Details tab.
  2. Find the hanging setup process, eg. «32-bit Setup Launcher (32-bit)», rightclick it and select Analyze Wait Chain.
  3. If another process is blocking it, the system will show which one it is and offer the user to terminate it directly.
Windows 7[1]
The Task Manager on Windows 7 works slightly differently and only the Resource Monitor (accessible from the Performance tab) has the Analyze Wait Chain feature to find the responsible process.
  1. Open up the Resource Monitor.
  2. Under any of the tabs at the top, find the hanging setup process in the list, eg. «32-bit Setup Launcher (32-bit)», rightclick it and select Analyze Wait Chain.
  3. If another process is blocking it, the system will show which one it is and offer the user to terminate it directly.

Alternatives:

  1. Find out which process the setup is waiting for with a program like WaitingOn.
  2. Terminate that process manually via Task Manager.

«Feature transfer error» when installing from physical media

This error may occur if physical media is damaged or cannot be read easily. Try manually copying the installation files from all discs to the hard drive and then running the installer from there.[2]

«You Do Not Have Enough Disk Space» (DOS games)

For some DOS games in DOSBox it is necessary to specify an amount of free space as part of the mount command, e.g. MOUNT C C:DOSGAMES -freesize 1024. See the DOSBox MOUNT documentation for further details.

    Can’t install Thief Gold on Win XP Pro…

    Hello,

    I just upgraded my OS from Win 98SE to Windows XP Pro. Now, I had to re-install both Thief 1 and Thief 2, as well as Darkloader, without any problems. When I want to install my (newly acquired from Ebay) Thief Gold, it won’t install. I get this message:

    Windows NT Install Detected

    This product cannot be installed on Windows NT due to a Microsoft Direct X ™ limitation

    I don’t understand at all cause I’m under Win XP Pro and never had NT installed on my computer.
    I just d/l and installed the latest Direct X version (9b) and I still get the same message.

    What can I do? I really want to play Thief Gold…

    The answer you seek can be found, I believe, in the FAQ thread at the top of this forum.

    How do I install Thief on Windows 2000 or Windows XP?
    Go to Start, then Run, then type d:setup.exe -lgntforce, where d: is your CDrom/DVDrom drive. (note: that’s -lgntforce, lowercase «L». If you’re unsure, copy and paste it from here.) This problem arises because Win2K and WinXP are based on the NT kernel, which had DirectX support which was flaky at best. Thief needs DirectX to run, so, when the installer sees the NT kernel, it assumes that the game isn’t going to be able to run and quits the installation. The -lgntforce switch tells the installer to ignore the NT kernel and install anyway.

    I also have a problem with installing Gold under XP.
    When the installation is at 90 percent, it asks you to insert Disk2. After I’ve done that, the installation should continue. But instead the Thief panel appears. When I click on quit, the installation stops and he asks for CD1 again (so I have to reinstall it). What can I do about it?

    Put CD 1 in again and quit the panel when it shows, and the click «OK» or «Continue» on the box asking for CD1 again.

    Ohhhhhhhhhhhh.

    I keep reading about this -lgntforce switch, but I’ve never even remotely needed to use it. TDP and Thief2 just hammer over to the hard disk like anything else I load. So, it’s just Gold that has the problem.

    When I first started to use XP Pro I had the same problem. I didn’t know about the -lgntforce command at the time so I checked with Microsoft. I ended up installing the XP Service Pack 1 which has cured the problem for me. All three versions of Thief have installed without any problems.

    Gloria, did you install Dark Loader? And have you set up Dark Loader for the directories you’re putting the FMs into? Do Thief TDP and TG play the original missions on your computer?

    Let us know what problem exactly is happening, so we can give you answers. Most of the people who can help you had problems switching to XP, and can help you out.

    well, I am dying to play thief again. I have been absent for a couple of months since RL has taken over, but now I would like to start again. I know that there are so many new missions that have come out. on my system I do have xp pro and I can install TDP/Thief 2 with the command, but when I want to play the screen then locks up.

    any idea what I could do? the FAQ does not seem to answer that in enough detail for me.

    I know the feeling! I can’t play it on Win XP Pro either.
    It will install using the -lgsntforce switch but it Never Plays
    Only crashes after a short time black screen…. back to desktop.

    I have Win XP Pro on a Pentium 4 3.0ghz Northwood
    Windows XP Pro with service Pks. & updates
    1GB DDR PC4000 ram
    Asylum 5600 FX 256mb (Nvidia) video
    dual Seagate 120GB harddrives
    Asus P4C800-E Deluxe Mainboard
    Microsoft Intellimouse Optical
    Microsoft Elite Keyboard
    SoundMax onboard sound
    ALL drivers have been updated

    I used the (setup -lgsntforce) switch to install Thief Gold
    It did install after some strange goings on with my CD rom and it claiming that I had the wrong CD in the drive etc.
    After install when I try to play….. I simply get a ‘black screen’ for a few seconds then it crashes back to the desktop as though nothing ever happened.
    It just won’t play! and here I sit in the cold & the dark & the damp…….
    Help Me and I’ll send ya a ticket to thu bear-fest….. and some low-slung cheeck spikes!

    Oh, I have Tom Clancy’s RavenShield, Athena Sword, Ghost Recon, Return To Castle Wolfenstein & Theif Deadly Shadows All Running Perfectly….. but I do Miss my regular ole Thief. It’s a shame that ALL the older games aren’t updated for newer OS’s.

    You must be using the forceware drivers from nvidia, there seem to be some problems with that and the dark engine. Either you can go back to older drivers or use the special patched .exe’s somewhere on these forums.

    I got TG *installed*, but…

    I was able to successfully install Thief Gold on my system using the fix in the FAQ, but I run into a different problem when I try to patch the game. I run the patch, and before the installer even comes up, I get a popup telling me the patch was «unable to locate the instalation (sic) path» of the original install. Any ideas about this one? Thanks, guys.

    Sort of ironic that with the release of DS we’re seeing a huge resurgence of the original 2 games. Too bad sales couldn’t have gone up like this when Looking Glass was still around.

    [edit] I just realized that my problem may be the fact that there ISN’T a patch for Thief Gold, is there? That means the patch I’ve got is for the Dark Project, hence not locating the installation path… crap, I just had to be an idiot noob.

    FYI

    I finally got Thief Gold to work on my computer without the patched «THIEF.EXE» file. All I had to do was roll back to the 52.16 driver. Before, I was using the 61.77 drivers from Nvidia that didin’t seem compatible with the old Dark engine. I kept getting the old black screen after a mission loads up.

    1.2 gigs of ram

    I applied the texture exe overwrite. I try to run the dark project and i get an error that the cd is not in the drive. It is. Any ideas?

    ok i’ll try this again when i’m not in a hurry to a meeting … like i have another lol.

    anyway…

    I’ve been having a craving for the original thief the dark project. This is not the gold edition. Version 1.14 i think.

    I followed the FAQs using the nt force option. i then DL-ed the texture patch and unzipped it. I got an exe called thieffixxed. I renamed it thief and copied it to my thief directory.

    I don’t care about user missions right now just the original so i tried running the ‘new thief’ executable.

    I get an error to insert the cd. But the cd is there. Since i have both T1 and T2 i double checked.

    what can cause this? Is it ’cause i have a DVD drive?

    I checked some of the config files and it looks as if the paths are c:thief and e:thief (my dvd drive).

    I’m looking for a solution or advice…i have a craving for thief and i don’t want to put 98 back on any machine…

    another aside for those wondering the XP only requirement…Microsoft has obsoleted the 98 platform in the MSDN. You will probably see 2k start to phase on in the next year or two probably depending on win2k3 and Longhorn.

“This program cannot be installed on Windows NT version 6.0 or later”- this is an error on Windows 8 when you try installing incompatible software. Thankfully Windows 10 is capable of running most of the old programs and apps that are necessary for the new age. But then, it has incompatibility issues with 16-bit and DOS applications that are very old. Although you can run 16-bit programs in the 32-bit version of Windows 10, the 64-bit build blocks it with an error “this app can’t run on your PC.” This article explores the ways to open and use old & incompatible programs on Windows PCs.

Install old programs and apps on Windows 10

Developers create programs to install and run on computers that have pre-defined specs. These conditions are related to OS, hardware, or the framework used to build the app. Authors set compatibility requirements in their programs to ensure that it runs flawlessly for the end-users. However, at times, these implementations make Windows programs incompatible on some computers which have a different profile. The system may still perhaps run it, but the pre-set incompatibility instruction stops the installation. Recently, macOS users also have this issue when Apple released macOS Catalina, which does not support the installation of 32-bit programs.

How to open and install old programs when Windows 10 says ” This app can’t run on your PC”

Older games and programs created for Windows XP, Windows 98, and Windows 95 runs well in Windows 10 (32-bit) with the help of compatibility mode or Virtual DOS Machine (NTVDM). One may open the settings to enable the NTVDM module in Windows 10 by typing for “Windows Features” in the search bar. Then, as shown below, tick NTVDM, and press okay. From now onward, all DOS and 16-bit programs for the old Windows editions will run on Windows 10.

However, Windows 10 64-bit edition doesn’t include the NTVDM feature. Hence, users will continue getting the error “This app can’t run on your PC” for old programs, just as in the first screenshot.

If you are running Windows 10 64-bit, and want to use old DOS programs, we recommend you try software like VirtualBox or DosBox for the purpose. Usually, there are fewer instances where people need to run legacy apps on Windows 10. But, there are many takers for classic games. Steps to install an old software application when Windows reports it as not compatible

Typically, Windows alerts users with error codes when it finds a program as incompatible. There are a lot of alert messages, but here is one I come across recently.

This program cannot be installed on Windows NT version 6.0 or later.

I got this error when I try installing an old software on a PC running Windows 8. You have to learn more about Windows NT versions to understand this further.

Windows NT versions

NT or New Technology is an internal code name for Windows versions. NT numbering is accessible in older Window PCs when you take the “About Windows” option in Control Panel. The NT number is 10.0 for latest Windows 10.

Now for the case above, the error implies that I cannot run the app on Windows NT version 6.0, which as per the table, is Windows Vista. The easiest way to fix these type of errors is to find the Windows edition corresponding to the NT version number, and run the PC in compatibility mode.

The following is the universal method to run incompatible programs on Windows PCs when the OS does not let you install it in the regular form. We recently found success in applying the same method to install Skype for Windows.

  • Right-click on the installer of the old program and take “Properties” option.
  • Now, find the compatibility tab, and move down to “Run this program in compatibility mode” section.
  • Next, choose the Windows version you think that would fix the installation.

Using Windows 10 compatibility troubleshooter to run old programs

Install incompatible programs on Windows PC

Microsoft has a built-in program for solving compatibility issues in Windows 10 and other recent OS versions. Here is how you could use this app if it doesn’t open automatically.

  • Search for “Compatibility” in the Windows search box.
  • Take the first result which opens Program Compatibility Troubleshooter application.
  • Click Next, and then select the incompatible program from the list that appears.
  • Pick the “Not Listed” line if you do not see the target program on the list.
  •  Press Next and browse to locate the app installer and proceed.
  • Choose to go with the “Recommended Settings” as Windows automatically configures the incompatible installer in the next step.

Follow these steps whenever and wherever you find a Windows application that not compatible with a particular OS version. This technique works in most of the cases. However, there may be security issues associated with old software-so be careful when you do this for unknown applications.

    I know it´s not planned to have Visual Studio 2008 run on Windows 2000 operating system. But I happened to run the setup.exe on Windows 2000 and I got a funny error message saying I have to install Windows 2000 or later.

    Sometimes a correct error message is worth a lot, so please correct that.

  • Thanks liujj_xujj for clarifying the system requirements. My issue was the error message when I launch setup.exe on an unsupported plattform (Windows 2000 in my case) actually the errormessage tells me :

    «This product cannot be installed on Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows NT. You must install Windows 2000 or later and rerun setup.»

    That is wrong.

    I expect an error message that says something like: «You need <paste liujj_xujj´s list of supported operating systems here>».

  • That´s a funny idea indeed — but I think that would mean .NET 3.5 on Windows 2000… I´m not sure if that´s really planned… And would it make sense to have .NET 3.0 without WPF, WCF, WF?
