These apps will help you track your progress and get organized.

Keeping track of your progress is one of the best ways to improve your productivity. To-do list apps make it easy to organize your tasks and stay up to date. Applications provide much more functionality than a written list, since they support features like setting reminders, syncing with digital calendars, and attaching files and notes. All of the best to-do list apps for Windows 11 and Windows 10 share quite a bit of functionality, but are separated by their premium features and availability across platforms.

Best Window to-do list apps

To-do lists are incredibly useful tools when used correctly. One of the features that will make any to-do list more useful is the ability to add and manage items from any device you use. Each of the apps in this list supports cross-platform syncing so you can easily add and check off items. Microsoft To-Do (opens in new tab) has a good feature set for a to-do list application including shared lists, file attachment support, and integrating with Microsoft 365 and other popular services. It’s free, making it a good value, and is regularly updated with new features from Microsoft so you can have confidence that it’s going to get even better in the future. These factors put together earn Microsoft To-Do the top spot of the best windows 10 to-do list apps.

If you’d like to use something outside of Microsoft’s ecosystem, Todoist (opens in new tab) is an excellent option. It integrates with services like Alexa and Dropbox and makes it easy to add new items to your list thanks to its natural voice entry.

All of the apps on this list are going to be the best option for certain users. Luckily, each of them has a free version so you can try them all out without opening your wallet.

It’s getting harder and harder to find dedicated Windows software—it seems like every productivity app lives in the browser these days. That can be frustrating if you’re the sort of person who wants to use an app that works well out of the box on Windows as a desktop app. Take to do list apps, for example; most are designed for mobile, the web, or maybe Mac, but few cater to Windows users in particular.

Happily, there are still a bunch of great Windows to do list apps out there, if you know where to look. We tried out as many as we could get our hands on and outlined the best options below, based on the following criteria. The best apps should:

  • Offer multiple ways to organize tasks, such as tags, lists, due dates, or projects.

  • Make it fast to add new tasks without opening the app, ideally using a keyboard shortcut.

  • Remind you about self-imposed deadlines.

  • Offer a clean interface, with native Windows features like notifications, live tiles, and Ink.

  • Sync tasks to your phone.

With these criteria in mind, here are the best Windows to do list applications. All offer free trials of some sort, so try a few and see what works.

How we evaluate and test apps

All of our best apps roundups are written by humans who’ve spent much of their careers using, testing, and writing about software. We spend dozens of hours researching and testing apps, using each app as it’s intended to be used and evaluating it against the criteria we set for the category. We’re never paid for placement in our articles from any app or for links to any site—we value the trust readers put in us to offer authentic evaluations of the categories and apps we review. For more details on our process, read the full rundown of how we select apps to feature on the Zapier blog.

Todoist (Windows, Android, iPhone, iPad, Watch, macOS, Web)

Best for Windows users who want to sync to every other platform

Todoist for Windows

Todoist is slowly becoming the most prominent to do list application out there, for several reasons. It’s available for basically every platform on earth, for starters. Todoist also offers a nice blend of power user features with a relatively uncluttered interface. Tasks can be organized using projects, due dates, labels, and filters, meaning you’ll have all kinds of tools for keeping organized—yet this never quite feels overwhelming.

The Windows version builds on that with an interface that feels right at home on modern Windows computers. Native notifications let you know about upcoming deadlines. Users can quickly add new tasks by right-clicking the taskbar icon. You can even pin any list to the start menu, meaning you’ll see what’s there regularly. All this makes Todoist’s Windows version well worth checking out, especially for users who need to sync to Android, iPhone, or even a Mac.

Todoist price: Free; some features, including labels and attachments, require a subscription that starts at $3 a month.

Microsoft To Do (Windows, Android, iPhone and iPad)

Best for Microsoft power users

Microsoft To-Do screenshot

Windows doesn’t come with an integrated to do application; To-Do is Microsoft’s remedy for that. Built largely by the team behind Wunderlist, which Microsoft acquired in 2015, To-Do tries to combine the friendly user interface and powerful features of that application with native Windows features.

The user interface is straightforward. You can create lists, complete with custom icons. You can add due dates for tasks, then view your tasks for the day. But the real selling points here are the integrations with Windows and Microsoft’s ecosystem as a whole. Tasks sync with Outlook, assuming you use the same Microsoft account for each. You can pin individual lists to your start menu, meaning you’ll see them throughout the day. You can even ask Cortana to add items to any list, by using your voice or by opening the start menu and typing something like «add milk to my shopping list.»

Microsoft To-Do also offers migration for Wunderlist users, which will prove essential when Microsoft shuts down Wunderlist at an undisclosed point in the future. Some Wunderlist features, such as collaboration, aren’t yet offered in To-Do, so some users might want to stick with Wunderlist in the short term. Long term, however, To-Do looks like it could become a solid offering…and it’s pretty great right now.

Microsoft To-Do pricing: Free for Windows, Android, and iPhone/iPad.

TickTick (Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone and iPad)

Best for blending simplicity with power

TickTick for Windows screenshot

TickTick is somewhat of a dark horse in the to do list world, granted, but it’s well worth a look. This powerful yet elegant application is cross platform, yes, but it also makes an effort to blend in on every operating system it’s offered for.

The Windows version of TickTick is particularly nice in this regard: this user interface feels right at home in Windows 10. You can quickly add a task, no matter which program you’re using, thanks to a system-wide keyboard shortcut. There are optional widgets, allowing you to see your task list or your calendar on your desktop. There’s even a tray icon, meaning all functionality keeps working even if you close the main window.

None of this would matter if TickTick didn’t offer the kinds of features we look for in a to do list. Happily, TickTick delivers. There are various ways to organize your tasks including projects, due dates, and sub tasks. There’s also optional integration with third-party calendars, including Google and Outlook, meaning you can see your tasks and your appointments in the same place. All of this means TickTick is well worth a spin for Windows users, even if the native software lives behind a paywall.

TickTick for Windows price: TickTick is free but the Windows application is only offered to Premium users after a 15-day trial. Subscriptions start at $2.40 a month.

Outlook (Windows, macOS)

Best for Microsoft Exchange users

Outlook for Windows screenshot

Microsoft Outlook isn’t primarily a to do list application: email, calendar, and contacts are all emphasized more in the user interface. To even find the task list feature in Outlook requires some digging. And yet it’s hard to leave Outlook off a list like this. For one thing, nearly three decades of history means Outlook is integrated into a many a Windows user’s workflow. For another, Outlook is the best way to access tasks synced using Microsoft Exchange, and Exchange servers remain common in the corporate world.

Outlook’s task functionality, once you find it, isn’t exactly clean and uncluttered like the other apps on this list, but it is highly functional. Users can organize tasks in folders, by due date, or using priority levels. Tasks are also integrated with your email, meaning you can quickly do things like turn an email into a task or forward a task to a colleague.

One downside, and it’s a big one, is syncing to mobile. Put simply this isn’t directly possible; the version of Outlook for mobile doesn’t support tasks. Microsoft To-Do, mentioned above, can sync with your Outlook tasks, and it offers version for Android and iPhone, so that’s a potential workaround.

Microsoft Outlook price: Outlook comes as part of Microsoft Office, which starts at $8.25 as part of Office 365 or $249.99 as a one time purchase.

2Day (Windows)

Best modern Windows GTD app

2Day for Windows screenshot

2Day was built, from the ground up, to be a modern Windows to do application. That alone makes it unique on this list, but 2Day is also perhaps the most powerful GTD application available to Windows users. There’s a wide variety of ways to sort your tasks: by folder, due date, tags, priority, or even custom smart lists. There are also subtasks, progress tracking, and so much more.

And everything fits nicely into existing Windows workflows. A quick add feature, found by right-clicking the taskbar icon, makes it fast to add new tasks whenever you think of something. An optional dark mode helps 2Day blend with the rest of your operating system. And you can even pin entire task lists to your start menu, giving you a quick way to view them regularly. There’s no mobile version of 2Day, sadly, but you can sync your tasks using various Microsoft services or ToodleDo.

So what’s the downside? This application is no longer maintained by developer Jeremy Alles, who was hired by Microsoft to work on Microsoft To-Do (are you seeing a pattern here?). 2Day is now an open source application; Hopefully a community picks up where the Alles left off.

2Day price: Free.

Nozbe (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iPhone and iPad)

Best cross platform GTD app with collaboration features

Nozbe for Windows screenshot

Looking for a full-featured GTD system that syncs with other platforms? Nozbe is well worth a look. This web application offers all kinds of advanced features. Tasks can be organized into projects, and there are even templates for projects—useful if you tend to do similar projects with some frequency. You can also organize tasks by due date, tags, priority, and categories, and a range of collaboration features make it easy to coordinate with a team.

The Windows version of Nozbe offers a quick add feature, triggered with a global keyboard shortcut, allowing you to add tasks regardless of which application you’re currently using. Hashtag support in this mode means you can quickly add things like due dates, projects, and more. There’s also a tray icon, which gives you quick access to the priority, calendar, and comments view. Give this application a shot if the others aren’t offering you quite enough power and configurability.

Nozbe price: Subscriptions start at $8 a month, and there’s 30 day free trial.

Best text-based to do list for Windows

Todotxt.net screenshot

To do lists do not need to be complicated—plenty of people use a pen and paper for the job, after all. It’s this mindset that led Lifehacker founder Gina Trapani to create todo.txt, a system for managing tasks in a single text document. There’s a command prompt application for this system, which you can install in Windows, but todotxt.net offers a graphical user interface for the same standard.

Keyboard shortcuts make it quick to add and organize your tasks, while custom filters give you a variety of different views. There are also quick tools for adding things like due dates, which would otherwise require you to manually type them in.

This will all take a little setting up, sure, but it’s among the most customizable options out there once you put in the work. Syncing to mobile is up to you; many users combine Dropbox with an application like SimpleTask on Android or todo.txt for iPhone and iPad.

todotxt.net price: Free

A Few More Options

We tried a bunch of different applications for this article but couldn’t quite include everything. Here are a few more options for you to consider:

  • Trello isn’t a to do list per se but you can use it to organize your life and there’s a Windows app.

  • Microsoft Sticky Notes isn’t a to do list either, sure, but it can work as one in a pinch. Recent versions can even sync between PCs.

  • Evernote, OneNote, or any other note taking application can work very well as a to do list, and most offer a Windows app.

  • Wunderlist used to be a no-brainer for lists like this, and is still quite nice. The problem: Microsoft bought Wunderlist and is shutting it down at an undetermined point in the future, making it hard to recommend. The intended replacement, Microsoft To-Do, is outlined above. It offers migration tools, so you could use Wunderlist for now and migrate when necessary.

  • Cortana supports reminders, which can come in handy: just ask Cortana to remind you about something. Microsoft To-Do’s integration with Cortana is probably a better bet for most users, though.

Does Todoist have a desktop app?

Todoist has apps for every major platform: Android, iPhone, iPad, macOS, Windows, Android Wear, Apple Watch, browser extensions, and the web.A huge part of what makes Todoist such a wonderfully productive app is that it’s packed full of features, but it never feels overwhelming.

Windows 10 has no built-in app to allow you manage the tasks you have. You might can use Sticky Notes to list the tasks to do. But, it is not really a good solution if you have too many tasks to do. Sticky Notes has never been designed to be a to-do list app. You can even add a note to each task you have to do.

Microsoft actually has an official to-do list app, Microsoft To-Do, which you can use to manage the tasks you have better way rather than Sticky Notes. However, this app is not installed by default and you need to install it via Microsoft Store.

In addition to Microsoft To-Do, there are also helpful to-do do list apps developed by third party developers. Following are 5 best to-do list apps you can install on Windows 10.

1. TickTick

TickTick is a cloud-based to-do list app. Meaning that you can add new tasks via certain device and access them via another device thanks to sync feature. Nearly all platforms are supported by TickTick. From Android, iOS, Mac, Web and of course, Windows. It’s just, the TickTick app for Windows 10 is not available as a free app. At first, you can install and use TickTick for Windows 10 for free, but it only lasts for 15 days. Afterwards, you will need to upgrade to premium to continue using the app unless you have no problem of losing sync feature.

TickTick itself offers some features that allow you to manage the tasks you have. It offers colorful list. If you have too many lists already, you can also put them together into folders so your tasks will keep very well arranged. You can add such things as images, note, and PDF file to each task. In addition, you can also set the due-date of each task as well ass priority. The TickTick app for Windows 10 is distributed via binary file which you can download on its official site.

2. Todoist

Todoist is one of the closest competitors of TickTick. The features offered by this to-do list app are not much different to TickTick. Unlike TickTick, the Todoist app for Windows 10 can be used for free. Todoist itself adopts a freemium business model. While you can use it for free, there are some features you can unlock by upgrading to premium. The Todoist app for Windows 10 is distributed via Microsoft Store.

Todoist also allows you to set the due-date as well as priority to each task, while the Project feature (similar to List in TickTick) allows you to put together tasks with the same topic. You can also actually add comment/note to each task to add more details regarding the associated task. However, this feature is only available for freemium version of Todoist.

3. Remember The Milk

Remember The Milk is a cross-platform to-do list app. Nearly all platforms supported by this app, including Windows 10. The Remember The Milk app for Windows 10 is distributed via a binary file which you can download on its official site. Remember The Milk is also a feature-rich to-do list app. It offers a collaboration feature, reminder, file attachment (available on pro version) and so on. To allow you manage your tasks, Remember The Milk offers list and tagging feature. You can also actually add sub-tasks to an existing task, but this feature is only available for premium version. Remember The Milk app for Windows 10 is available as a free app.

4. Microsoft To-Do

Here it is. An app that makes Wunderlist fans end up broken heart. Wunderlist is an official to-do list app developed by Microsoft. This app is developed by the same team as Wunderlist. No wonder if the interface and the core feature of Microsoft To-Do are not much different to Wunderlist. Microsoft To-Do itself is only available for three platforms: Windows, iOS and Android. The Microsoft To-Do app for Windows 10 is distributed via Microsoft Store.

Microsoft To-Do itself is actually pretty cool. It has a clean interface and offers lots of features like reminder, due-date, collaboration and note. No file attachment feature offered by this app (at the time of writing). The best thing about Microsoft To-Do is that it is completely free to use. The downside of this app is that you are required to have a Microsoft account to use it.

5. To-Do Prime

Unlike five first to-do list apps above, To-Do Prime doesn’t require you to have an account before being able to use. It is the best option if you are looking for an offline based to-do list app for Windows 10. To-Do Prime is developed exclusively for Windows. No other platforms are supported by this app. Although this app is designed to be an offline based to-do list app, sync feature is also available in case you want to access your tasks from other Windows devices. You can sync your tasks by login to your Microsoft account. The To-Do Prime app for Windows 10 is distributed via Microsoft Store. Features like list, due-date, priority and comment are available on To-Do Prime.

Best to-do apps to use on your Windows 10 PC

Keeping your time organized isn’t always simple, and this is why many people tend to use to-do apps to help them manage it better. If you have problems managing your time, you might be interested in one of these to-do apps for Windows 10.

What are the best to-do apps for Windows 10?

Google Keep

Google Keep is Google’s tool for note keeping similar to OneNote or Evernote. In addition to adding notes, you can also add reminders with the reminders tool. Just as with other, similar tools, you can set the reminder’s due date and time along with the option to set a weekly, daily, monthly or yearly reminder for certain events. This is great if you have same events every week or month, but in addition to a predefined repeating schedule, you can also set a custom schedule that allows you to repeat certain events only on specific days of the week.

You can also set certain events to repeat once every number of weeks, months, or years, which is great for making long-term schedules. In addition, you can set when do you want a specific reminder to end.

In addition to advanced scheduling, you can share your to-do list with other users or customize it by adding certain colors or images to it. Lastly, this tool allows you to create an actual to-do list so you can easily check the things that you completed. If you want to keep a certain note or reminder easily accessible, you can pin important reminders so that they will stand out againts all your other notes and reminders. If you want to organize your to-do lists, you can assign different labels to them in order to sort them.

Google Keep is a simple note taking and to-do web app and can be easily accessed from any web browser. If you have Google Chrome installed, you can install the web app on your PC and there are also Google Keep extensions available for major browsers. There’s also a Windows 10 app available from the Windows Store called EasyNotes for Keep and even though this app is ad-sponsored, it works similarly to web app version, so we definitely recommend it.

Todoist

Next on our list is Todoist. This tool is designed to work as a to-do app for you and your team. The first thing you’ll notice when you start it up is its clean interface. In addition to that, this to-do app allows you to create multiple projects you can share with others.

Just like any other to-do app, Todoist allows you to set due dates and times for your tasks. It also allows you to add a priority flag next to your tasks so you can easily differentiate important tasks from the ones that are less important.

Although Todoist is a great app, it lacks certain features in its Free version, like labels or reminders. You also can’t access filters or write comments to your tasks. Speaking of limitations, you can share the tasks with up to five people and you can have 80 active projects at a time in the Free version.

There are two premium versions available which opens up reminders, comments, labels, templates, location-based notifications, the option of adding tasks via email, and so much more. If you want to have access to these features, you’ll have to purchase the premium version of Todoist for $28.99 yearly.

Even though Todoist is available for download from Windows Store, it lacks some basic features with its Free version. If you don’t mind the lack of reminders and labels, feel free to try it out!

Wunderlist

Wunderlist is one of the most popular to-do apps on all platforms, and rightfully so. This application allows you to create lists and share them easily with others. In addition to that, it offers a beautiful and simple user interface.

Regarding its features, you can easily create tasks and set the due date for them. In addition, you can add reminder dates as well so you don’t miss any of your tasks. There’s also a simple option to repeat your tasks on a daily, monthly or weekly basis. Although this option works well, there’s no ability to set custom repeating schedule like with Google Keep.

Regarding other options, you can easily add subtasks thus creating a to-do list quickly. If you want, you can even add notes to your tasks, and there’s support for comments and files as well. There’s also an option available that allows you to add a star to certain tasks so you can easily differentiate them. All your tasks will be stored in the list on the left so you can easily locate them.

All these features are available to you in its Free version, but there’s also a Pro version available for $4.99 a month. That removes the 5MB limit for uploaded files and allows you to have an unlimited number of assigned to-dos and subtasks. In the Free version, you can assign tasks to up to 25 people and have up to 25 subtasks, but the Pro version removes these limitations. In addition, with its Pro version, you can also choose between 30 attractive backgrounds. If you want to use Wunderlist with your team, there’s also a Business version available.

Wunderlist offers great features in its Free version that will be enough for most basic users. The only options missing are labels and custom reminders, but even without those Wunderlist is a great to-do app. Wunderlist is available for all major platforms and you can download it from Windows Store.

Tick Tick

Tick Tick is another to-do web app available for most popular platforms. Unfortunately, there’s no Windows version available, so if you want to use Tick Tick on a Windows 10 PC, you’ll have to download an extension for your browser. Tick Tick comes with a simple design, but allows you to create custom lists for your tasks and assign tags to them. This is especially useful if you want to organize your tasks. Tick Tick supports standard options, like due dates or repeating tasks. In addition to standard predefined intervals, Tick Tick fully supports the creation of custom repeating tasks. Of course, you can assign priority to certain tasks if you wish to do so.

Tick Tick allows you to attach files to your tasks, add comments and descriptions. Unfortunately, there’s no option for to-do lists in its Free version. The upgraded version gives you the access to a Calendar or the option to import your own calendar if you want. Another benefit of the Premium version is the Task Revision History feature that allows you to see detailed information about tasks. The Premium version also gives you an unlimited number of lists and 99 tasks per each list. With the Premium version, you can share your lists and tasks with others and have unlimited number of subtasks. The Premium version also gives you 5 reminders per task and allows you to upload 99 files per day. As for the price, the Premium version is available for $2.79 per month.

Tick Tick comes with simple yet effective design and some decent features, but one of its biggest flaws is the lack of checklists in its Free version. Also, there’s no Universal application or Desktop version available, so you’ll have to use the web app version or download the extension for your browser if you want to use Tick Tick.

Get It Done

Get It Done is a Universal to-do app for Windows 10. This app comes with a simple design and offers basic features to the users. With this app, you can easily create new lists and add your tasks to them. In addition, you can add tags to tasks so you can organize them easily.

We have to mention that this app doesn’t support repeating tasks in its Free version. In addition to repeating tasks, the Free version also lacks cloud storage which many apps on our list have. Get It Done is a basic to-do app with simple features, designed and optimized for Windows 10 devices – just without many bells and whistles.

You can download Get It Done from the Windows Store.

Any.do

Any.do is another popular to-do app available for multiple platforms. One thing that separates Any.do from other to-do apps on the list is its sleek and innovative design. All your tasks are sorted into several categories such as Today, Tomorrow, Upcoming and Someday. This allows you to easily see the upcoming tasks and not miss anything. If you prefer, you can sort your tasks by lists such as Personal, Work, etc. If you want, you can also create new custom lists. Also, there is Priority View that allows you to see important tasks that have a star assigned to them.

Task creation is simple and allows you to add notes, sub-tasks, and attachments. You can even share tasks with your friends. As for repeating tasks, there are basic options available, but if you want to create custom recurring tasks, you’ll have to purchase the Premium version. With it, you can share unlimited tasks with an unlimited number of people and receive location-based reminders. By purchasing a Premium account, the file limit will change from 1.5MB per file to 100MB per file, and you’ll have access to multiple themes. In addition, you’ll have access to an unlimited number of Any.do Moments.

While Any.do is a great to-do app, there’s no version for Windows 10 available for download. There’s an unofficial version available in Windows Store, but we weren’t able to log into it on our PC. Any.do offers great design and some basic features and is perfect for basic users. However, the lack of a Windows 10 application might be a deal breaker for some users.

If you want to try Any.do out, go to the tool’s official website and download it on your computer.

Remember The Milk

Remember The Milk is a simple to-do application available for most major platforms. The application allows you to create tasks and repeating tasks easily.

Of course, you can add tasks to lists or assign certain tags to easily organize them. If you want, you can also add start dates and estimated times to tasks. In order to differentiate your tasks, you can even set priorities for certain tasks or add locations to them. Of course, sharing your tasks with others is also supported. If you want, you can easily postpone certain tasks or change the due date simply by selecting the desired task and choosing the option that you want from the menu.

We have to mention that the free version of Remember The Milk doesn’t have support for subtasks — a major flaw in our opinion. As for the premium version, you can get it for $39.99 per year. This will allow you to add subtasks to your tasks, share tasks with an unlimited number of users, and color your tags. The Premium version also brings with it advanced sorting, reminders on your mobile device as well badges and widgets. Another benefit of the Premium version is synchronization with Microsoft Outlook, support for themes, the option to use it offline, and unlimited storage for your tasks.

There’s an unofficial Remember The Milk app available on Windows Store called QuickMilk, so if you have a Windows 10 Mobile device, you might want to consider using this application. Before you’re able to use QuickMilk, you’ll have to log in to Remember The Milk and authorize the application to access Remember The Milk data. There’s also a classic Desktop version available if you don’t want to use the web app. Remember The Milk is a decent app, but the lack of offline support and subtasks might be an issue for some users.

Microsoft To-Do

Last entry on our list is Microsoft To-Do. This is a brand new application from Microsoft that you can use to create to-do lists and notes. The application offers sleek user interface so you can easily organize your tasks.

You can create new tasks with ease and set reminders and due dates for them. In addition, you can add notes for each task. It’s worth mentioning that you can set your tasks to repeat and set a custom repeating schedule for them. All your tasks are sorted into different lists and you can easily move tasks between them. The application has two lists by default, and you can move all your important tasks to My Day list. Of course, you can also create new lists and assign various tasks to them. It’s worth mentioning that you can import your tasks and lists from other applications such as Todoist or Wunderlist.

The lists are customizable and you can change the name and the background of each list in order to differentiate them. While the application looks great with its minimalistic design, it lacks certain features. There’s no ability to share your tasks and lists with others, and you also can’t add subtasks. There’s no support for file sharing and the lack of ability to receive notifications via email or text message is also noticeable.

Microsoft To-Do lacks certain features, but we’re confident that Microsoft will introduce them in the upcoming versions. The application is completely free, and it’s available as Universal app from
Microsoft Store. In addition, iOS, Android and web version are also available. If you’re looking for a simplistic and completely free to-do app, we highly recommend that you try Microsoft To-Do.

You can download Microsoft To-Do from Windows Store.

There are many great to-do apps for Windows 10, but if you’re looking for a simple application that offers all the necessary features in its Free version, we highly recommend you try Wunderlist. Wunderlist comes with simple design, supports cloud storage, and is available on almost any platform. In addition, Wunderlist offers all the necessary options for basic users in its Free version, so there’s no reason not to try it out!
