Right click on the .vdi file .
Click on properties .
Just uncheck Read only .
And start VirtualBox with administrator priviligies.
This done the trick for me .

It seems you use Windows OS, as Host OS. Try to run Virtualbox as Administrator. Right click on Virtualbox ICON and «run as Administrator».
Or change the rights of Virtualbox. Hope it helps.

2.Select property item in the popup menu.
3.Swith to security tab.Select users then click Edit button.
4.Check on full control.

This happens on our work airgap machine when someone forgets to shut down the virtual machine at the end of their session. Restarting the machine resolves the issue, for me.

For me with Win 11, giving full control to current user in security tab of .vdi file and then uninstalling and reinstalling VirtualBox, worked.

I’m using Ubuntu HOST on MacOS client and having the same problem…
I think the file directory on my storage (/mnt/HARDISK) may have some problem…but using the following command can solve
sudo mount -o remount,rw /mnt/HARDDISK
See if it works

Try the link to move a vdi to another drive — UUID may prevent it from loading

Read Only error when booting Virtualbox VM from SD card
I have Lubuntu installed on an SD card I can boot from. Sometimes it’d better if I can boot from it into a VM. I have Virtualbox for this. Host OS is MacOS.
Looks like it worked, but even though I’ve set myself to the owner (sudo originally made root the owner), and I’ve set permissions to 777, I keep getting a read only error.
At this point I think the error could mean the disk itself, not the file pointing to the disk, is what’s read only, and if that’s the case then I don’t really know what to do about that. I can boot the SD card directly when starting up the Mac and use Lubuntu normally that way. I’m just guessing though. I don’t know how to reconcile this error message with the permissions I’ve set.
I’ve tried attaching the vmdk file to the VM as SATA and IDE, and the errors are almost the same:
This is the content of the vmdk file:
I also have logs from Virtualbox but there are a lot and I’m not sure which are relevant. Most of the error logs look like they complain about wrong permissions, but if anyone knows what may help I’ll post them.
Does anyone have any insight into this? I’ve done some looking around for others who’ve had this problem but most other people look like they’re doing something fancier than what I’m doing, like stuff that involves Onedrive, or their solutions involve something you can do on Windows. I don’t do much virtualization so I’m a little out of my depth here.

This is also happening for me.
I’m trying to upgrade my install from 3.1.4.0 r57640 to 4.1.8 r75467. My host OS is Win7.
I’m running with UAC disabled, using an Administrator account, and have no VirtualStore directory. Running as admin using the right click context menu makes no difference. Running with UAC enabled as either a Standard User or Administrator makes no difference. I’ve made sure all previous installed files and folders are removed, prior to installing 4.1.8, but yet the problem still occurs.
It sounds like why most users are saying running as administrator works for them is because when they do that, they then have permissions to modify the Program Files directory, and VirtualBox is no longer using some stale data/config information that may have been left behind from the previous installation. This isn’t really a solution, it’s more like a temporary workaround.
Have just loaded the latest update, and this problem has suddenly appeared. The reason for failure seems clunky, better design needed.
Can only be some installation issue. Is the problem reproducible if after you uninstalled and re-installed VirtualBox?
I too have the same problem. I am the administrator for the PC but I am not able to access the VM. when I am tryong to access the VM it is giving the error as below
Host OS : Windows 7 64bit Guest OS: Windows Ser 2008 64 bit.
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine AX RETAIL 2012.
Failed to attach driver below us! Image is read-only. (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).
PIIX3 cannot attach drive to the Primary Master (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).
Result Code: E_FAIL (0x80004005) Component: Console Interface: IConsole
and I uninstalled and reinstalled the VM so many times but the same problem persists.
I went to the path C:USERS AppDataLocalVirtualStoreProgram Files And then I didn’t find any Oracle VM related files or folders. I didn’t understand this oint posted by one user(and then rmdir /s Oracle)
and I’m unable to attach the log file. So I’m pasting the some part of log file here
So please help me to solve the problem and also let me if any info required from me to solve the problem.

Windows
Linux

raw disk access not working on Windows 10 amd64

Description
Using VirtualBox 5.0.x revision 101957 on a Windows 10 amd64 Professional host, I cannot get raw access to some of the partitions on my hard disk, which I was able to get access to on Windows 7 x64 Ultimate, with VirtualBox 4.3.? (a recent 4.3.x build). I had setup two vmdks, one to access two partitions on my system drive (the one Windows is on), and a separate one to access the partition on a separate hard disk (there is only one partition on that disk, Windows doesn’t use that disk at all). The boot process fails immediately if I try to boot with the vmdk to access the two partitions on my Windows drive, with the following error messages:
If I detach the offending vmdk, and boot with the vmdk to access a separate hard drive, the vm boots fine, as long as I do not access the separate hard drive. Since it’s a Linux guest, I mount the separate drive, but as soon as I try to access the data on that drive, the guest hangs.
I have attached the VirtualBox logs. VBox.log is the log produced by trying to boot with two attached partitions from the host drive, and VBox.log.2 is the log produced by the vm crashing trying to load the data on a separate disk.

Tested with revision 102010. No change.
Can you please post you disk configuration as it can be seen from the Windows Disk management tool? I don’t have problems at all here on Windows 10. In fact without the additional fixes we made to protect the disk against concurrent access by the host it is not possible for me to access the disk from inside the guest.
And having the vmdk descriptor files would be great too.
The mixup with Win10 is that you need VB5.0.1 to get the bridged networking, which is a must since my linux guest needs it own fixed IP address. Functionally 5.0.1 was OK apart from the physical disk I have included a zip file with:
All folders have the physical/raw isk definitions used in the VM.
BTW the initial test on Win10 failed since my VM gave an error on a non existing swap partition. I have fixed that by entering Manual boot and changed the swap partition mounting as in the article on http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2164313

OK, I’ve just tested the issue with the latest release version available 5.0.2 102096 (oddly newer than the latest test build), and raw disk access works again. I think the issue is resolved. I’m sorry for not replying earlier, I was expecting to get an email when someone would look at this issue. In any case, I think you can close it. Thank you very much for looking at it so fast.
The issue is only fixed because we backed out the changes for Windows before the release. The underlying problem is still not resolved and having the above requested information would help to fix this.
I spoke too fast, far too fast. I am going to give you what you requested, but I would still like to mention the new issue I am experiencing (VBox 5.0.2r102096, Windows 10 x64 Pro host, debian 64 guest). When I mount the separate hard drive on my guest, it mounts fine. I use a share on the guest to view files from the Windows 10 host. From my window on the host, listing directories goes well, but if I try to open a video to view it on the host, I get the following error.
The guest is paused by this error. If I try to resume the VM, I get the same error repeatedly. I have to power the guest off. If that’s any help, the host cannot modify the content of the directory on the guest, because it doesn’t have modify rights on anything, and the share is read-only anyways in Samba.

disk management screenshot
I am connecting to the first two logical partitions in the screenshot. The two other logical partitions are not used by VirtualBox. Here is the output of list partition in Windows diskpart for disk 0
I am connecting partitions 4 and 5.
Just so I am thorough, here is the partition table for disk 1.
Now for list volume
volumes are 3 and 4.
I suppose I created the vmdk files in this case with the commands
or something similar. I am now going to upload those files.
Edit: added partition list for disk 1 (secondary hard disk, not used by Windows).

I have three VirtualBox VMs on my Windows 10 host, one Linux Mint 17.3 and two Ubuntu 14.04.4. Often when I start any of the VMs I get the following error message at launch:
Failed to open a session for the virtual machine Mint.
Details:
Failed to open image ‘D:OneDriveVMsMint.vdi’ for writing due to wrong permissions (VERR_VD_IMAGE_READ_ONLY).
Failed to attach driver below us! Image is read-only.

This is temporarily solved by using the VirtualBox installer to repair the install. Though the problem occurs again after a few launches of VMs.
What else can I do?

Having the VM files in OneDrive folder can cause this error. Temporarily stopping OneDrive when opening VMs solves this issue.

Sometime this error appears in case something wrong with VB drivers themselves.
If you can’t start ANY virtual machine try to reinstall/upgrade VirtualBox.

If this is the file path in the error message (as in OP’s error):
‘D:OneDriveVMsMint.vdi’
- Navigate to that folder
- Try to change the extension of the file (e.g. change vdi to vdi2)
- Take note of the error message that appears
In my case, Backblaze was trying to upload the file to the cloud and locked it, which was causing the error. I only discovered by trying the steps and getting the error message «This file is locked by Backblaze». I assume the same thing happened to OP, only with OneDrive.
