  • Anything new here? I can’t find any info on whether the SDK is already available, but I’m not sure whether I’m just lame or there isn’t anything new out there yet.

  • The next new version will be 7.8 and 8 SDK. It’s not too long until it will be available to internet sources (which should be taken with a fair amount of grain). But until now, there is nothing new.

In this tutorial, you’ll create your first Windows Phone 8 application. The aim of this article is to familiarize yourself with some of the building blocks of the Windows Phone 8 SDK. If you haven’t read the introduction of this series, then I recommend you do so first. It’s important that you have a good understanding of the platform before creating applications for it.

1. Prerequisites

We’re going to create a basic Windows Phone 8 application using C#. You need to have Visual Studio installed as well as the Windows Phone 8 SDK. If you don’t have Visual Studio installed, then I recommend you install Visual Studio Express 2012, which you can download from Microsoft’s Download Center. This will install the necessary software and tools for Windows Phone 8 development.

By installing Visual Studio Express 2012 for Windows Phone 8, you install the following applications and tools:

  • Visual Studio Express 2012
  • .Net Framework
  • Windows Phone 8 SDK
  • Blend For Visual Studio 2012

With the development tools installed, it’s time to start creating your very first Windows Phone 8 application.

2. Your First Application

To create a new Windows Phone project, launch Visual Studio Express 2012 and select New Project > Windows Phone App from the File menu. Give the project a name, specify a location to save the project to, and click OK.

Create ProjectCreate ProjectCreate Project

Make sure to select the Visual C# template from the list of Templates on the left. Visual Studio will also ask you about the version you want to target. We’ll be targeting version 8.0.

3. Launch Your Application

We now have a very basic Windows Phone project to work with. Let’s launch the application to see what it actually looks like on the Windows Phone emulator.

First LookFirst LookFirst Look

To run your application in the Windows Phone emulator, click the green play button at the top left of the window. This will launch the emulator, install your application, and launch it in the emulator.

The result is a screen similar to the one shown below. You can choose between several emulators in Visual Studio. Feel free to play around with the other emulators, but don’t choose the Windows Phone 7 emulator as our project targets Windows Phone 8.

EmuEmuEmu

Conclusion

Creating a Windows Phone 8 project and running it in the emulator is as simple as that. Of course, our Windows Phone 8 application isn’t very functional yet with only one screen and no user interaction. In the next tutorial, you’ll learn how to add functionality to your Windows Phone 8 application.

  • Hi,

I had a problem to access Visual studio express 2012 for windows phone. After checking some threads I found the problem. It seems because a Visual studio professional is already installed on the PC, Windows phone SK didn’t install Visual studio express 2012
    for windows phone.

So I have uninstalled Visual studio professional 2012 from the PC and reinstalled Windows phone SDK but still Visual studio express 2012 for windows phone is not installed on the PC.

Did I miss something here? How can I install Visual studio express 2012 for windows phone on the PC.

Answers

  • If WP 8 SDK is installed you should be able to launch VS express from the following. Can you please verify if this works ?

     C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft Visual Studio 11.0Common7IDEVPDExpress.exe.

In this Post, We will see How to Install Windows Phone 8 SDK. Before Installing, Have a look at System Requirements for Installing Windows Phone 8 SDK.

You can download Windows Phone 8 SDK from Microsoft’s website in two ways:

  1. Windows Phone 8 SDK Offline Version (1.6 G.B.).
  2. Windows Phone 8 SDK Web Version.

I am going to install it using Offline Installer. Before Installing, Go to Control Panel-> Programs and Features -> Click on Turn Windows features on or off. Install/Turn on Hyper-V. (Check your PC’s BIOS and make sure that hardware-assisted virtualization and hardware-assisted data execution protection turned on otherwise you can’t start the Windows Phone Emulator)

Now Extract/Mount the .iso file of Windows Phone 8 SDK. and Double Click on WPexpress_full.exe and Install it.

After Successful Installation, Open Visual Studio -> Click on New Project -> Under Windows Phone Template, You will see Windows Phone Application projects.

Hope this will help you.

Microsoft has just released an update for Windows Phone SDK 7.1 and 8.0 to provide support for Windows Phone 7.8 emulators. I have shared the details in my last blog post.

In this article, I will walk you through how it would look to work with this update.

The following simple steps will help you with it:

  1. Install Windows Phone SDK 8.0 or Windows Phone SDK 7.1
  2. Install Windows Phone SDK Update for Windows Phone 7.8 from Microsoft

Click the Download button for ‘WPexpress78_update.exe’.

  3. Double Click on ‘WPexpress78_update.exe’ and Click on ‘Install’ to apply this update.

Note: Depending on the network bandwidth, it would take some time to download and install necessary packages.

Once the update is completed, you will receive the confirmation.

  4. Launch Your Visual Studio 2010 or 2012, and open up/create a Windows Phone project.

    image

Now go to the device selection drop down and you can see that new set of 7.8 emulators (256MB and 512MB) are added to the list.

image78_vs2012

and click on ‘Run’.

Now you play with emulator for some time. You can see the new tile resizing option to display small tiles for your application. And also you can create Flip, Cycle, and Iconic template based live tiles as well.

Just sharing some screen shots of sample app on emulator with Medium, small application live tile display.

imageimageimage

Why do you need this separate set of emulators for 7.8, instead I can use the old 512MB/256MB emulator right?

NO, you require Windows Phone 7.8 emulators to setup and test the new Cycle, Flip, or Iconic – live tiles[small sized] for your application. Also to have the new feature — ‘Live Tile light up’ (an easy way for you to add Windows Phone 8 Live Tile functionality to your Windows Phone OS 7.1 app so that when it’s run on a Windows Phone 7.8 or Windows Phone 8 device, it «lights up» the new templates!)

Windows Phone 8

Windows Phone Store.

Fullscreen in Browser».

Construct 2

Visual Studio

Visual Studio —
