Refactoring

Refactoring includes operations such as intelligent renaming of variables, extracting one or more lines of code into a new method, and changing the order of method parameters.

IntelliSense

IntelliSense is a set of features that display information about your code directly in the editor and, in some cases, write small bits of code for you. It’s like having basic documentation inline in the editor, so you don’t have to look up type information elsewhere.

Visual Studio search

Visual Studio menus, options, and properties can seem overwhelming at times. Visual Studio search, or Ctrl+Q, is a great way to rapidly find IDE features and code in one place.

Live Share

Call Hierarchy

Go To Definition

The Go To Definition feature takes you directly to the location of a function or type definition.

The Peek Definition window shows a method or type definition without opening a separate file.

What’s New

Visual Studio 2022 version 17.4 will be the next long term servicing channel once it’s released. Enterprise and Professional users who are configured to receive updates on the 17.4 LTSC channel are supported and will receive fixes to security vulnerabilities through July 2024.

  • A search for arm64ec or ec in the vs installer now brings up the relevant arm64 components containing arm64ec support.
  • In Visual Studio 2022 version 17.3 and later, ML.NET Model Builder would hang when training Image Classification models with the GPU. This deadlock has been resolved and Image Classification can be trained using CPU or GPU successfully.
  • Using screen readers with the integrated terminal now correctly provides information on the commands that were run and their output.
  • Visual Studio doesn’t crash when opening a .NET 7 Linux core dump.

Installer

  • For 17.2, we fixed an issue preventing customers from installing Visual Studio due to a GPO policy setting in the system registry. Visual Studio will now function the same way that WebView2 functions with regard to this installation.

Editor

  • Visual Studio can now automatically save code documents whenever the application loses focus. This feature can be accessed via Tools > Options > Environment > Document. If the «Autosave» option is checked, Visual Studio will attempt to save all dirty code documents whenever the Visual Studio application loses focus (e.g. when switching to another application in Windows).

C++

  • In 17.1 we introduced peripheral register and rtos views for embedded developers. We are continuing to improve the capabilities of those views with usability improvements in 17.2. Users can now click a pin icon next to peripherals, registers, or fields to pin them the top of the Peripheral View.
  • Added compiler support for C++23 feature deducing this, available under the /std:c++latest flag.
  • Added inline parameter name and type hint support, toggled by pressing Alt+F1 or double-tapping Ctrl. This behavior can be customized under Tools > Options > Text Editors > C/C++ > IntelliSense.
  • Added experimental support for C++20 modules in CMake projects. This is currently only available with the Visual Studio (MSBuild) generator.
  • Added IntelliSense support for C++23 features deducing this and if consteval.
  • In 17.1 we introduced peripheral register and RTOS views for embedded developers. We are continuing to improve the capabilities of those views with usability improvements in 17.2:
  • The RTOS tool window is now hidden by default, this prevents showing a tool window with error messages that are not relevant when an RTOS is not being used.
  • When a user double clicks on an RTOS object in the tool window it adds a watch for the object.
  • When a user selects the stack pointer start/end values in the RTOS tool window it is opened in the memory window.
  • Thread awareness has been added for device targets for the call stack window.
  • Added implementaion of the remaining C++20 defect reports (a.k.a. backports). All C++20 features are now available under the /std:c++20 switch. For more information about the implemented backports, please see C++20 Defect Reports project on microsoft/STL GitHub repository and this blogpost
  • Added various C++23 Library featues, available under the /std:c++latest flag. For details about the new features, please refer to the STL Repo changelog
  • Improved performance of the initial C++ indexing by up to 20%, depending on the depth of the include graph.

Git Tooling

  • Enhanced line staging experience by allowing stage line adornment to work in different diff modes (side by side, inline, left, right view).
  • Stage and Undo commands in peek toolbar now operate on the target hunk.
  • Added the ability to enable Git commit-graph for better history and Git operations performance.
  • Improved interactive staging by adding support for staging individual lines of code right from the editor and the diff view.
  • Enhanced the branch checkout experience, a.k.a branch switching by adding in more options and context for when there are un-committed changes.
  • Enhanced the detached HEAD experience by providing the option to keep or discard commits when switching to a branch.
  • Added an option to include license template when creating a new repository.
  • Line-staging support, a.k.a interactive staging with the ability to stage specific lines and/or chunks of code right from the editor and the diff view.
  • Azure DevOps connection detection enhancements making it easier to related work items to commits.
  • Visual Studio now consumes 64-bit Git for Windows.

Test tools

  • You can now use a faster code coverage window with more flexible columns to organize and save your view. You can enable the code coverage experience improvements in Tools > Options > Environment > Preview Features.
  • Remote Testing now supports test runs against remote arm64 windows environments.
  • Significant improvements across full functionality of Live Unit Testing are available under a preview feature flag including:
  • Supporting more solutions out-of-the-box than before
  • Better handling of large solutions
  • Better default behavior working with large test sets
  • Better cancellation abilities of test runs in progress
  • More configuration options with new Live Unit Testing wizard and Lutignore file
  • Enable this new Live Unit Testing build experience in Tools > Options > Environment > Preview Features and read our blog post to learn more.
  • We are also previewing a more advanced test progress bar that includes more details on where the Test Explorer is in the test execution process with live updates.

.NET Productivity

  • We now surface embedded source and Source Link as part of Go to Implementation if a referenced assembly has embedded source or Source Link. This allows you to navigate to the original source files that implement the target symbol.
  • In .NET 7 we added a new attribute called the StringSyntaxAttribute which will allow you to tell us what kind of data a string represents such as JSON, Regex, or DateTime. We added support for this attribute so you will get syntax highlighting for the new StringSyntaxAttribute for JSON.
  • We added a diagnostic message for the new JSON StringSyntaxAttribute when there is a misplaced string literal in an object literal to say that a colon is expected.
  • We now have a refactoring that wraps a collection of initializers for both Visual Basic and C#.
  • We now support embedded languages for the new C# 11 language feature raw string literals. To use raw string literals, set the language version in your project file to preview: preview.
  • Background Code Analysis now has more configuration options in Tools > Options allowing you to set the diagnostic scope to None in-order to turn off Background Code Analysis.
  • Code Cleanup now supports all code style options.
  • We added a new code fix for parameterless constructors inside of structs.
  • We added support for StringSyntaxAttribute so you will get syntax highlighting in Visual Studio based on the type of data that the string represents.
  • Quick Info will now display signatures of anonymous delegates.
  • Double clicking on inline parameter or type hints will now insert parameter or type names.
  • We added a new refactoring that removes unnecessary lambda expressions and calls the method group directly.
  • In C# 11 we added a new language feature called raw string literals. We now have a refactoring to convert a normal or verbatim string literal to a raw string literal.

.NET Productivity

Razor (ASP.NET Core) Editor

  • The new Razor editor now shows you the colors inline for text document colors.
  • The new Razor editor now supports the ability to collapse regions.
  • The new Razor editor now supports the «wrap div» shortcut Shift+Alt+W.

IntelliCode

  • For 17.1, IntelliCode started suggesting quick actions for C# based on a user’s intent in the IntelliSense list. For 17.2, these are now shown as auto-suggested code that appears in the editor upon typing.
  • For 17.2, IntelliCode’s suggestions for repeated edits also appear as auto-suggested code when the suggested edit only involves adding code. This applies to both edits that span single lines and multiple lines.

Container tools

  • You can now add Docker Compose container orchestration support to an Azure Functions project and debug it locally.
  • We added .NET 7 support.

.NET Debugging with WSL

  • Improved troubleshooting for configuration issues including an automated installation of WSL.

Service Fabric

  • We added .NET 7 support.

SQL Server Data Tools

  • Added support for column-level encryption in SQL projects targeting in Azure Synapse Analytics.

Web Tools

  • Creation of new Azure Function projects is now fully integrated into the general New Project dialog allowing you to pick and configure Azure Function triggers without the need for an additional dialog. You also get the option to create a dockerfile as part of the project creation. When further configuration through Connected Services is needed, the experience navigates you there and guides you through the rest of the steps.
  • You can now connect your application to PostgreSQL (Postgres — Official Image | Docker Hub), MongoDB (Mongo — Official Image | Docker Hub) and SQLite (Data Source=Sqllite.db) through the Connected Services experience
  • Warnings coming from scaffolded coded and its non-nullable properties will be hidden by default by adding the property «Nullable» with the value «annotions» in the corresponding .csproj file.
  • The Add Dependency dialog in Connected Services now features a search experience.

General

  • Improved proxy support by detecting when users are behind a proxy and proactively prompting for credentials when Visual Studio needs to access online resources
  • Microsoft Teams development tools
  • The Microsoft Teams App project template has been improved and now creates configuration files consistent with the teamsfx CLI, including the .fx folder.
  • We recommend creating a new project using the updated template for any existing Teams Apps you’ve created with previous versions of the Teams Toolkit.
  • We’ve removed account selection and automatic registration of Teams resources from the Microsoft Teams App project template.
  • You can now choose when to sign-in with your M365 identity and register app resources using the Project > Teams Toolkit > Configure Microsoft Teams App menu option.
  • Updates to the manifest.*.template.json files can be synchronized with Teams Developer Portal by selecting this menu item again at any time.
  • You can now create and debug Bots for Microsoft Teams.
  • Create a new project using the Microsoft Teams App project template and select the Bot capability.
  • Use the Project > Teams Toolkit > Configure Microsoft Teams app menu to register the app and Bot.
  • You can now create resources for Tabs and Bots in your Azure subscription.
  • Use the Project > Teams Toolkit > Provision in the Cloud menu to create resources in a subscription.
  • Use the Project > Teams Toolkit > Deploy to the Cloud menu to publish code to those resources.
  • You can open remotely hosted resources in a browser that are created from the Provision menu using the Preview Teams app menu.

Visual Studio 2022 will be a 64-bit application, no longer limited to ~4GB of memory in the main devenv.exe process. With a 64-bit Visual Studio on Windows, you can open, edit, run, and debug even the biggest and most complex solutions without running out of memory.

While Visual Studio is going 64-bit, this doesn’t change the types or bitness of the applications you build with Visual Studio. The studio will continue to be a great tool for building 32-bit apps.

Visual Studio 2022 Designing for everyone

Microsoft is refreshing the user interface to better keep you in your flow. Some of the changes are subtle cosmetic touches that modernize the UI or reduce crowding. Overall, we aim to reduce complexity and decrease cognitive load so that you can focus and stay in the zone. Also, making Visual Studio more accessible delivers better usability for everyone – the next version of Visual Studio will include the following:

  • Updated icons for better clarity, legibility, and contrast.

  • Refreshed and improved product themes.
  • Integration with Accessibility Insights to detect accessibility issues early on – before they get to your end-users.

Developer to developer, we understand that personalizing your IDE is as important as picking your desk chair. We have to make it “just right” before we can be at our most productive. It will be easier than ever to make Visual Studio 2022 “just right” for you, from the ability to customize aspects of the IDE to syncing settings across devices for those who maintain multiple dev boxes.

Developing modern apps

Azure

Visual Studio 2022 will make it quick and easy to build modern, cloud-based applications with Azure. We’ll get you started with a good supply of repositories that describe common patterns used in today’s apps. These repositories are made up of opinionated code showing these patterns in action, infrastructure-as-code assets to provision the Azure resources, and pre-built GitHub workflows and actions setting you up with a complete CI/CD solution when you first create a project. Plus, the required development environment will be defined in the repository so that you can start coding and debugging right away.

.NET

Visual Studio 2022 will have full support for .NET 6 and its unified framework for web, client, and mobile apps for both Windows and Mac developers. That includes the .NET Multi-platform App UI (.NET MAUI) for cross-platform client apps on Windows, Android, macOS, and iOS. You can also use ASP.NET Blazor web technologies to write desktop apps via .NET MAUI.

And for most app types like web, desktop, and mobile, you’ll be able to use .NET Hot Reload to apply code changes without needing to restart or lose the app state.

C++

Visual Studio 2022 will include robust support for the C++ workload with new productivity features, C++20 tooling, and IntelliSense. New C++20 language features will simplify managing large codebases and improved diagnostics will make challenging problems easier to debug with templates and concepts.

Microsoft is also integrating support for CMake, Linux, and WSL to make it easier for you to create, edit, build and debug cross-platform apps. If you want to upgrade to Visual Studio 2022 but are worried about compatibility, binary compatibility with the C++ runtime will make it painless.

Innovative Visual Studio 2022 at your fingertips

Diagnostics and debugging

The ability to confidently debug your applications is at the centre of your daily workflow. Visual Studio 2022 will include performance improvements in the core debugger, with additional features like flame charts in the profiler for better spotting the hot paths, dependent breakpoints for more precise debugging, and integrated decompilation experiences that will allow you to step through the code you don’t have locally.

Real-time collaboration

Live Share opens new opportunities for collaborating with others, exchanging ideas, pair programming, and reviewing code. In Visual Studio 2022, Live Share will introduce integrated text chat so that you can have quick conversations about your code without any context switches. You’ll have options to schedule recurring sessions that reuse the same link, simplifying collaboration with your frequent contacts. To better support Live Share within organizations, we’ll also introduce session policies, that define any compliance requirements for cooperation (e.g. should read/write terminals be shareable?).

Insights and productivity

The AI IntelliCode engine in Visual Studio continues to get better at seamlessly anticipating your next move. Visual Studio 2022 will provide more and deeper integrations into your daily workflows, helping you to take the right action in the right place at the right time.

Asynchronous collaboration

Visual Studio 2022 will include powerful new support for Git and GitHub. Committing code, sending pull requests, and merging branches are when “my code becomes our code.” You’ll notice a lot of built-in logic and checkpoints to guide you efficiently through the merge and review process, anticipating feedback from your colleagues that could slow things down.

Improved code search

Code search is an integral part of the software development lifecycle. Developers use code to search for lots of reasons: learning from others, sharing code, assessing the impact of changes while refactoring, investigating issues, or reviewing changes. The following products support the minimum system requirements below:

Supported Operating Systems:

Visual Studio 2022 is supported on the following 64-bit operating systems:

  • Windows 10 version 1909 or higher: Home, Professional, Education, and Enterprise.
  • Windows Server 2019: Standard and Datacenter.
  • Windows Server 2016: Standard and Datacenter.

Note: The following are not supported:

  • 32-bit and ARM operating systems.
  • Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC edition, Windows 10 S, and Windows 10 Team Edition. You may use Visual Studio 2022 to build apps that run on these editions of Windows.
  • Server Core and Minimal Server Interface options for Windows Server.
  • Windows containers, except for the Visual Studio Build Tools.
  • Running in a virtual machine environment without a full Windows operating system.
  • Application virtualization solutions such as Microsoft App-V for Windows or third-party app virtualization technologies.
  • Multiple simultaneous users using the software on the same machine, including shared virtual desktop infrastructure machines or a pooled Windows Virtual Desktop host pool.

Hardware

  • 1.8 GHz or faster 64-bit processor; Quad-core or better recommended. ARM processors are not supported.
  • 4 GB of RAM.
  • Hard disk space: Minimum of 850 MB up to 210 GB of available space, depending on features installed; typical installations require 20-50 GB of free space.
  • The video card supports a minimum display resolution of 720p (1280 by 720); Visual Studio will work best at a resolution of WXGA (1366 by 768) or higher.

Note Visual C++ 2015, 2017 and 2019 all share the same redistributable files.

For example, installing the Visual C++ 2019 redistributable will affect programs built with Visual C++ 2015 and 2017 also. However, installing the Visual C++ 2015 redistributable will not replace the newer versions of the files installed by the Visual C++ 2017 and 2019 redistributables.

This is different from all previous Visual C++ versions, as they each had their own distinct runtime files, not shared with other versions.

Developing modern apps

Azure

Visual Studio 2022 will make it quick and easy to build modern, cloud-based applications with Azure. We’ll get you started with a good supply of repositories that describe common patterns used in today’s apps. These repositories are made up of opinionated code showing these patterns in action, infrastructure-as-code assets to provision the Azure resources, and pre-built GitHub workflows and actions setting you up with a complete CI/CD solution when you first create a project. Plus, the required development environment will be defined in the repository so that you can start coding and debugging right away.

.NET

Visual Studio 2022 will have full support for .NET 6 and its unified framework for web, client, and mobile apps for both Windows and Mac developers. That includes the .NET Multi-platform App UI (.NET MAUI) for cross-platform client apps on Windows, Android, macOS, and iOS. You can also use ASP.NET Blazor web technologies to write desktop apps via .NET MAUI.

And for most app types like web, desktop, and mobile, you’ll be able to use .NET Hot Reload to apply code changes without needing to restart or lose the app state.

C++

Visual Studio 2022 will include robust support for the C++ workload with new productivity features, C++20 tooling, and IntelliSense. New C++20 language features will simplify managing large codebases and improved diagnostics will make the tough problems easier to debug with templates and concepts.

Microsoft is also integrating support for CMake, Linux, and WSL to make it easier for you to create, edit, build, and debug cross-platform apps. If you want to upgrade to Visual Studio 2022 but are worried about compatibility, binary compatibility with the C++ runtime will make it painless.

Diagnostics and debugging

The ability to confidently debug your applications is at the center of your daily workflow. Real-time collaboration

You’ll have options to schedule recurring sessions that reuse the same link, simplifying collaboration with your frequent contacts. Insights and productivity

The AI IntelliCode engine in Visual Studio continues to get better at seamlessly anticipating your next move. Visual Studio 2022 will provide more and deeper integrations into your daily workflows, helping you to take the right action in the right place at the right time.

Create an offline installation package of Visual Studio for local installation

We designed Visual Studio to work well in various network and computer configurations. For all scenarios involving the local machine, we recommend that you use the Visual Studio Installer, which is a small file that checks for updates on a regular basis and helps you stay current with all the latest fixes and features. The information on this page discusses how to create an offline installation package of files for installation on the local machine.

If you are an enterprise IT administrator who wants to perform a deployment of Visual Studio to a network of client workstations, or if you need to create an installation package of files to transfer to or install onto another machine, refer to our Visual Studio Administrators Guide and the Create a network-based installation of Visual Studio documentation.

Use the «Download all, then install» feature

Sometimes online access is problematic. For example, you might have an unreliable internet connection or your internet connection may have low bandwidth. For situations like these, we’ve made other methods available for acquiring Visual Studio. You can use the Download all, then install feature from the Visual Studio Installer to download an installation package on the local machine before you install, or you can use the command line to create a local installation package to install later.

To download a local installation package, select the Download all, then install option in the dropdown at the bottom of the Workloads tab of the Visual Studio Installer. The purpose of this feature is to frontload the downloading of the Visual Studio packages onto the same computer that you plan on eventually installing Visual Studio on. By downloading the packages locally first, you can then safely disconnect from the internet before you install Visual Studio.

The "Download all, then install" option

[!IMPORTANT]
The Download all, then install functionality downloads a Visual Studio installation package that is customized to the local machine. Do not try to transfer this downloaded installation package to another computer, as it’s not designed to work that way. Instead, if you want to download an installation package and transfer it to or install it on another machine, then you’ll need to create a layout as described in the Create a network-based installation of Visual Studio documentation.

You can also configure future updates of this instance of Visual Studio to respect the Download all, then install behavior. For more information, refer to the Customize update settings documentation.

Use the command line to create a local layout

Download the bootstrapper for the edition of Visual Studio you want and copy it into the directory that you want to serve as the source location of your local layout. Once the layout is created, you can use it to install Visual Studio. The bootstrapper is the executable that you use to create, update, and perform other Visual Studio installation operations. You must have an internet connection to complete this.

Step 1 — Download the Visual Studio bootstrapper

So, a bootstrapper with a Product version of LTSC 17.0 will install the latest 17.0.x servicing release that is available on the 17.0 LTSC channel. Step 2 — Create a local layout

You must have an internet connection to complete this step.

Open a command prompt with administrator privileges, navigate to the directory where you downloaded the bootstrapper into, and use the bootstrapper’s parameters as defined in the Use command-line parameters to install Visual Studio page to create your local layout. Common examples using the Enterprise bootstrapper are illustrated below and in the command-line parameter examples page. You can install a language other than English by changing en-US to a locale from the list of language locales, and you can use the list of components and workloads to further customize your local layout.

Step 3 — Install Visual Studio from the local layout

When you install Visual Studio from a local layout, the Visual Studio installer uses the local versions of the files. But, if you select components during installation that aren’t in the layout, then the Visual Studio installer will attempt to download them from the internet. To make sure that you install only the files that you’ve previously downloaded, use the same command-line options that you used to create the local layout. To make sure your installer doesn’t try to access the internet when it’s installing the product, use the --noweb switch.

For example, if you created a local installation layout with the following command:
