How to get the updates
Surface updates are released in stages—not every Surface will receive updates at the same time, but they’ll be delivered to all devices. If you haven’t previously received updates, you can manually update by following the steps at Download drivers and firmware for Surface. Or select the Check for Windows updates button below to open Windows Update in Settings.
Check for Windows updates
After the updates have finished installing, it’s recommended that you install all available optional updates. To install optional updates, from Search, type View Optional updates and select it under Best match. If updates are available in Driver updates, click through to download to ensure that all Surface drivers listed in the release have been installed.

Firmware updates can’t be uninstalled or reverted to an earlier version.

When you install the latest update, you’ll also get all the previous updates if your Surface doesn’t have them already. Only updates that apply to Surface will be downloaded and installed.

Introduction
In a previous posts I’ve shown you how you can deploy Windows 8.1 x64 to the Surface Pro 3 with MDT 2013 or Configuration Manager 2012 R2. In this post I’ll show you how to automate the deployment of Windows 10 x64 to a Surface Pro 3 from start to finish on a Server 2012 R2 server by using a PowerShell script.
The PowerShell script is to be run on your soon-to-be MDT server and it will create everything for you, all you have to do is supply it with an OS (Windows 10 x64) and optionally some apps, drivers or even the Windows ADK 10. Fear not, if you don’t have the Surface Pro 3 drivers or Windows ADK 10 then the script will download them for you.

Setup MDT 2013 Update 1 for Microsoft Surface Pro 3 — August 2015.zip
To use the script simply adjust the many variables within to suit your needs, then when you are ready, run it in PowerShell ISE.
The script will automatically download and install Windows ADK 10 and MDT 2013 Update 1. In addition, it will install Windows Deployment Services and after configuring the MDT DeploymentShare it will import the boot image into WDS. The boot image will have both the Surface Pro 3 100mb and gigabit network driver pre-installed. If you want to remove with, simply rem out the line in the script.
Speaking of drivers, the script will automatically download the latest drivers for Windows 10 for the Surface Pro 3 and import them into the MDT 2013 Update 1 deployment workbench.
Once the script is complete you can go ahead and launch the deployment workbench to review what has happened. Here you can see the drivers imported for the Surface Pro 3.
and here are the two selection profiles it creates, one for the Surface Pro 3, the other for WinPEx64 (the boot image).

When you PXE boot (UEFI network boot) the Surface Pro 3, the correct x64 boot image containing NIC drivers for the Surface Pro 3 will be downloaded from WDS
you get to enter a computer name (you can modify customsettings.ini to change this behaviour)
and select your core apps (Office 365)
before the LiteTouch OSD kicks off
here you can see that Windows 10 x64 is already installed and now MDT is installing Office 365 Professional
and after some time installing that, it’s done !

Windows 10 is said to have been installed so far mostly on desktop and laptop devices, but we wonder whether the new Surface Pro 3 is considered a laptop or a tablet. In this piece, we take a look at some problems you might have when trying to install Windows 10.
Some Surface Pro 3 owners have decided to give Windows 10 a go and try it out on their devices. However, in doing so, they have encountered plenty of annoying problems, so we’ve decided to round them up, so you could know what you could be possible facing prior to making the upgrade.
What problems can you encounter when installing Windows 10 on Surface Pro 3?
One of the first problems seems to be related with the install process not getting until the end, according to one user:
I’m not having any luck. The install runs up to somewhere near 40%. Then the installer closes, no error message or anything. I’m not sure what is wrong.

Also, what you need to take into account is that if you do a fresh install of Windows 10, don’t expect wireless drivers to be available for the Surface Pro 3, which has already been plagued by a lot of WiFi problems that have been recently fixed.
If you do a fresh install, like the old 8.1 retail install, there are NO wireless drivers for the SP3 built into this preview. Either use winreducer and integrate the driver pack 9/9/14 into the install ISO then do a USB drive install, OR download the driver pack, install windows through USB install, and then from within manually install your wireless driver.
Here are some other bugs related to the Windows 10 install on the Surface Pro 3:
The top button on the pen no longer works (can’t double-click to take a screen shot and can’t single-click to open OneNote) and the display no longer rotates.
Some more problems related to the pen functionality, the rotation and even some issues pertaining to the functionality of the Fitbit App:
Buttons on pen not operating properly. Can’t rotate screen. Can’t bring down menu in FreshPaint with finger or pen, can with mouse. Fitbit App similar problem.
Somebody is complaining about the functionality of Internet Explorer, as well:
On my SP3 i can’t have internet explorer in metro mode. always launch in desktop mode.
More issues related to the swiping down for menus
Swiping down for menus isn’t supported with the new layout of apps on the desktop. There is a menu button in top left of window.
Windows 10 install issues and fixes [2018 update]
After this article was written, there was plenty of other issues reported by users. We will list here common issues encountered when trying to install Windows 10 so you could start to troubleshoot your installation process. Here they are:

The Surface Pro 3 is the only Windows machine I have in the house, so I was hesitant to install Windows 10 Technical Preview on it. After hearing good things about the recent Build 9926, I finally caved in and decided to install the Preview. Here are my first impressions so far.
The first few minutes were frustrating. I didn’t know that Windows 10 had a tablet and non-tablet modes that can be enabled or disabled from the notifications panel. I was frustrated because the on-screen keyboard did not automatically pop up when I tap on text fields. I was also frustrated that the handy gestures I knew from before, like swiping from the top and snapping apps to the left or right, were gone. I felt stupid after realizing tablet mode was off and after enabling things felt more normal.
The app I frequently use on my Surface Pro 3 is Internet Explorer. With the current version of Windows 10 Preview, only the desktop variation of Internet Explorer shows up. The address bar and back/forward buttons are smaller, making them harder to tap. I also can’t swipe to the previous page.
After those two major gripes with the preview, I’m mostly happy with the experience. Windows 10 feels more unified. It doesn’t feel like there are two separate operating systems.
Attaching a Type Cover to the Surface Pro 3 sends a notification that asks me if I want to switch to desktop mode. The opposite happens when I de-attach the keyboard. It seems like a nice feature, but I find myself sticking with tablet mode even when the Type Cover is attached.
I like the new Start button. It feels familiar especially if you’re a Windows Phone fan. You can rearrange the tiles, by tapping, holding, and dragging. You can also pin apps as tiles, but I found that the current version only lets you do that with the trackpad or mouse input.
It’s great to see Cortana on the Surface Pro 3. She also sounds better. It’s probably because of bigger speakers on the Surface Pro 3 compared to the ones found on Windows Phone devices.
I like that swiping in from the left side of the screen shows all my open apps in bigger thumbnails. It’s called Task View. This solution feels faster at switching apps compared to Windows 8.1. There’s also support for multiple desktops, but I haven’t needed to use them yet.
I think this version of the Windows 10 Preview has poor standby battery. I turned off the display and left for lunch. When I came back, I noticed the low battery warning.
Should you update to Windows Technical Preview?
If you’re like me and the Surface Pro 3 is your primary Windows machine, I would not recommend installing the Windows 10 Preview yet. While it’s great to get an early experience of Windows 10, my web browsing experience and battery life has suffered. Those are two critical things to me. I’d wait until Microsoft’s next-gen web browser, Project Spartan, is included with the Preview. If you need a second opinion, Daniel has shared his first impressions on an earlier build.

Update: So far, my experience with Windows 10 has been fairly positive, but I still feel more comfortable using my Windows 8.1 “official” installation for my real work. Therefore, I thought it might be a good idea to post instruction on how to backup the recovery partition, just in case the partitioning causes issues. Here’s how to do so for the Surface Pro 3, you might want to look up instructions if you’re working with a different system. Doing this ensures that you’ll be able to return to the factory default if you run into any issues.

I’m excited about the direction Microsoft is taking with Windows 10 (and am already growing comfortable with the odd naming convention), and am installing and working with it so that I can keep up-to-date on its progress. As of now, the preview is aimed at desktop machines, specifically those with a keyboard and mouse, and so it’s not yet optimized for tablets and hybrid devices like the Surface Pro 3. Nevertheless, I’m interested in following along as Microsoft adopts the OS for these devices.
Installing the Windows 10 preview on the Surface Pro 3 was a little less straightforward than on my desktop, however, for a few reasons. I thought I’d provide an overview of the issues and how the address them, to help anyone else who might be running into the issues themselves. My process was complicated a bit because I wanted to perform a clean install to a new partition rather than upgrading my default Surface Pro 3. This way, I could dual boot the machine and retain access to the official (and supported) Windows 8.1 configuration.
UEFI vs. BIOS: The Surface Pro 3 uses UEFI to boot instead of BIOS, which only matters because whereas a machine with a BIOS could boot from a USB drive formatted as NTFS, UEFI devices cannot. They require a USB drive formatted as FAT32. If you’re like me, then you’ve used Microsoft Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool to create boot disks (and for more than just Windows 7). In the past, this has worked fine for me, but it turns out that the tool formats USB drives as NTFS and so won’t work to install to the Surface Pro 3 (or any other UEFI machine). The Surface Pro 3 doesn’t have a DVD drive, of course, and so USB remains the best option.
The solution was pretty simple–create the boot drive manually. What I did was simply format my USB drive as FAT32, then copy the files from the Windows 10 Preview ISO file to the USB drive. Then, I used the method of holding the volume down button, pressing and releasing the power button, and then releasing volume down when the Surface logo appeared. The machine booted to the installation routine, and things were straightforward from then on.
Surface Pro 3 Drivers
The biggest issue I ran into when I first attempted the installation was that a variety of Surface Pro 3 components, such as the WiFi adapter, weren’t supported by the standard Windows 10 installation. Fortunately, Microsoft provides an up-to-date set of drivers. Click on the Download button, select the file “Surface Pro 3 – September 2014.zip,” then click Next. Download them and unzip to the USB boot drive, and you can then select the uninstalled devices in Device Manager, update the drivers, and point to the Surface Pro 3 driver folder on the USB drive to install them. Do that for each uninstalled device, reboot, and everything should be supported.
Making Space
Microsoft provides a utility to manage partitions, called Disk Management, that you access by going to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Disk Management. Right-clicking on a partition and selecting “Shrink Volume” allows the creation of free space and the creation of new partitions. On a hard drive, that is, one with a spinning disk, the utility will defragment the drive and move any files at the end of the drive, allowing the volume to be resized.
However, on a machine with a solid state disk or SSD, like the Surface Pro 3, the system won’t perform a defrag, and certain system files like virtual memory and restore points can be scattered throughout the drive. This means that the Shrink Volume utility can’t do its job.
What worked for me was the following:
- Turn off virtual memory: Right-click on the Start button, select System, then Advanced System Settings, then Advanced. Under Performance Options, select Advanced, Change virtual memory. Uncheck “Automatically manage paging file size for all drives, and select “No paging file.” Click OK to close out each dialog.
- Turn off System Restore: Search “restore point,” select “Create restore point.” This opens an expanded System Properties dialog with the System Protection tab selected. Click “Configure” then “Disable system protection.” Click OK and close the System Properties dialog.
Reboot the system, and then run the Disk Management utility again and shrink the volume. You should be presented with an option to shrink by some amount; for me, it was roughly 74GB, which was enough for me. Once the volume has been resized, you can turn virtual memory and system restore back on, and proceed with the installation.
Install
Once I successfully create the partition and rebooted using the FAT32-formatted USB drive, the installation went as expected. I selected the free space for the installation, and followed the installation directions. I won’t cover those here, but the installation is just like any other modern Windows equivalent.
You can always perform an upgrade installation, but then of course if you run into issues your only recourse would be to perform a factory restore. By dual-booting, you retain access to your official Windows 8.1 installation and a fully functional Surface Pro 3, while also being able to gain access to Windows 10.
