Windows 8 build 8250 is the official Consumer Preview build of Windows 8, which was officially released to the public on 29 February 2012. Binaries from the ARM32 architecture were discovered on the Microsoft Symbol Server on 25 May 2022.

New features and changes[edit | edit source]

Branding[edit | edit source]

• It is the earliest known build to drop the 2001 flag logo and replace it with the new tilted window logo.^[a] Some resources still use the old logo, however.
• The default desktop wallpaper was changed to a teal-colored wallpaper containing a Metro-style betta fish along with a large-sized number 8 on the left-hand side. The betta fish would also be used on the boot screen for this build.

Metro[edit | edit source]

• The Metro interface has been slightly updated again that makes it resemble the RTM.
• The default lock screen background has been updated.
• This build allows changing Start screen background styles and colors.
• This build installs multiple other Metro applications as well, as with the other Windows 8 builds officially released from Microsoft. In addition, a working Store (of the time) and Live apps were also included.
• Games Explorer has been removed from the Start screen.

Secure Boot Policy[edit | edit source]

This build uses a preliminary version of the Secure Boot Policy, although the on-disk structure is identical to later builds:

• Signature validation is different: the policy must have a hash in or be signed by a certificate in the UEFI Key Exchange Key signature database.
• The CanUpdate element is used here; the code using it was removed later but the element remained in the file format. A path to an updated policy can either be set in a UEFI variable; alternatively, for BitLocker where the VMK is sealed by the TPM, an updated policy is read from osdevice:LatestPolicy.p7b. This policy must have a valid signature.
  • The updated policy must have a PolicyPublisher equal to one of the CanUpdate GUIDs in the loaded policy; also, the policy version must be greater than the loaded policy’s version. If all conditions pass, the updated policy is installed to UEFI non-volatile storage and used as the active policy.
• BCD rules are identical to later builds; that is, BCD elements can be overridden by the policy to either be forcibly ignored, or for deletion to be disallowed from the running OS, or for the element value to be locked to a value or one of several values listed in the policy.
• Registry rules are not used for low-level cryptographic settings as in later builds but instead are used to override registry values anywhere in HKLMSYSTEM. The operating system loader winload.e* and NT kernel both have code implementing this functionality; the former uses the policy to override the registry values it reads from that hive.
• Option flag bits are completely different from later builds; only 3 bits are used, all by the operating system loader; bit 0 disables the Edit Options menu, bit 1 disables the Advanced Options menu, bit 2 is unknown but related to the Advanced Options menu.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Boot screen[edit | edit source]

On Legacy BIOS machines, the boot screen uses 16:9 aspect ratio, thus, i.e., on 4:3 monitors it gets stretched down horizontally. UEFI configurations are not affected.

Transparency effects in the Windows Basic theme[edit | edit source]

When using the Windows Basic (Aero Lite) visual style, transparency effects can be enabled by means of a bug in the Personalization Control Panel (don’t persist if you re-selected the created theme). To do so:

1. Right-click the desktop and open up Personalization. Now click on the «Window Color» link given at the bottom of the window. Keep the window open.
2. Open a separate personalization window and apply the Windows Basic theme.
3. Go back to the other personalization window that you opened at the start, uncheck «Enable transparency» option and then re-check it. Click on «Save changes» button. This will cause glass effects to be enabled.

Depending on copies of this build, when opening the About dialog, it might not render entirely and will close automatically instead.

Description:
• This build is made from the original English versions of Windows 8 build 8250

• The system is Russified by 95% thanks to the author of the Russian localization PainteR (for which I thank him very much)
• The activation mechanism has been redesigned, and now the system is activated as Windows 8 Pro VL build 9200
• The installer has been translated, and there is a choice between English and Russian installation.
• After installation, the login animation will always be like Windows 8 build 9200
• Integrated NET Framework 3.0-3.5 and DirectX. Jun2010
• UAC is disabled, but the subway tiles are working.
• My computer is displayed on the desktop 

Additional information:
• One of the disadvantages is that I have replaced the «WinStore» Store with a slightly modified one, but it still does not work.
• One of the advantages is that the system is quite working, now it has an activation that can be extended by the cms server. Or it is even possible that it will be possible to activate the MAC with a key (forever) (I haven’t tried it myself)
• And also in this version, the Aero (window transparency) is even better than that of Windows 8 RP build 8400, since the transparency takes up more space (lower than that of Windows 7) And although I have not found a patch for using third-party themes, but still all new themes will be with Aero.
• In the version with the x86 architecture, it was possible to add the ability to switch between Windows 7 and native Windows 8. For x64, this could not be done.
• If after the first change of the explorer on Windows 7 , the tweak does not change, then you will have to manually go to the folders C:explorer8UI and run the files as an administrator Install. cmd
• Also, programs are already installed in the system.

• But the button is not immediately visible, so you need to move the mouse to the lower-left corner and click the right mouse button. And select «Configure Start8». Configure the program to suit your needs, as well as active corners for Windows are disabled by default. Unchecking the box will restore the standard operation of Windows.

Treatment procedure:
On the desktop, a shortcut from the activator KMSAuto Pro v1.13 (thanks to the authors too)
The activator itself is located in the folder C:Program FilesKMSAuto Pro v1.13 but you may have to run the command line as an administrator cmd.exe and enter the key slmgr-ipk NG4HW-VH26C-733KW-K6F98-J8CK4 or do it through the activator itself. You can also set the auto-renewal of activation, through the activator itself.

This build is completely devoid of a time bomb.

Доп. информация:
• Прошу не писать о том что это устаревшая или тестовая версия. Так как это и так понятно, потому качаем или нет в зависимости надо вам это или нет.
• Из минусов то что Магазин «WinStore» я хоть и заменил на немного изменённый , но он всё равно не работает.
• Обновления закачать тоже не удалось,скорее всего их больше нет на данную версию.
• Из плюсов то что система вполне рабочая, теперь имеет активацию которую можно продлевать кмс сервером. Или даже возможно что получится активировать МАК ключом (навсегда) (сам не пробовал)
• И так же в этой версии , Аеро (прозрачность окон) , даже лучше чем у Windows 8 RP build 9400 , так как прозрачность занимает больше места (ниже , как у Windows 7) И хотя я не нашел патча для применения сторонних тем, но всё равно все новые темы будут с Аеро.
• В версию с архитектурой х86 удалось добавить возможность переключения между проводниками Windows 7 и родным Windows 8. Для х64 сделать это не удалось.
• Если после первой смены проводника на Windows 7 , твик не сменится, то придётся в ручную зайти в папки C:explorer8UI и запустить файлы от имени администратора Install.cmd
• Так же в системе уже установлены программки.
Unlocker 1.9.1 , WinRAR 4.20 , HashTab v5.1.0.23 , кнопка «Пуск» Stardock Start8 1.12 Final [Multi Rus] RePack by D!akov (D!akov тоже отдельное спасибо) .
• Но кнопку сразу не видно , потому нужно навести мышку в левый нижний угол и нажать правую кнопку мыши. И выбрать пункт «Настроить Start8» . Настроить программу под свои нужды, так же в ней по умолчанию отключены активные углы для Windows. Снятие галочки, восстановит стандартную работу Windows.

Процедура лечения:
На рабочем столе ярлык от активатор KMSAuto Pro v1.13 (авторам тоже спасибо)
Сам активатор находится в папке C:Program FilesKMSAuto Pro v1.13 но возможно придётся запустить командную строку от имени администратора cmd.exe и вбить ключ slmgr -ipk NG4HW-VH26C-733KW-K6F98-J8CK4
или сделать это через сам активатор. Так же можно установить авто продление активации, через сам активатор.

Here are tips on how to install the Windows 8 Consumer Preview, released on February 29th 2012.

In a nutshell, this pre-release Windows 8 version, known as ‘BUILD’ 8250, is easy to install as a new operating system, or as an upgrade for the Developer Preview, but think hard before upgrading your existing operating system, it’s very difficult to uninstall these Preview versions.

Traps When Installing Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Although installing the Consumer Preview version is straightforward, there are three tiny traps to avoid:

Trap 1: Get the product key!  Unlike the developer beta, the Win 8 consumer preview needs a product key.  Here are the 20 digits you need: DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J.  If that does not work try: NF32V-Q9P3W-7DR7Y-JGWRW-JFCK8.

This key is no big secret, Microsoft publish DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J on their download site.  My problem was that I downloaded the English version which is at the top of the page; thus I did not see the product key until I scrolled down, and down again past the Japanese version. 

Trap 2: Be patient for the first 3 minutes.  My install screen froze for at least 3 mins; I even restarted the boot loader procedure twice until the penny dropped, I realized that static screen with the fish was not going to do anything for 3 minutes!

Plan How to Install Your Windows 8 Consumer Preview

• Research a URL to download the Windows 8 .iso file. (see below)
• Find an ISO burner, Windows 7 has one built-in.
• Get ready with a blank 4.7 DVD  (DVD-9 for the 64-bit version)
• Prepare a test computer, or a virtual machine.
• You need a product key for this installation, here it is:

Alternative install method:  Try the web based installer which incorporates the Upgrade adviser and Easy transfer wizard.

System Requirements for Windows 8

• Processor – 1 GHz
• RAM – 2 MB 64-bit
• Disk Space – 20 GB for the operating system
• Graphics Adapter – At least Microsoft DirectX 9
• Resolution of 1366 x 768 to get ‘Snap Apps’
• DVD – To install your Microsoft operating system.

Recommendations:  Install these Preview versions of Windows 8 in a Virtual Machine, or on an old laptop.  To really get to grips with the Metro-style UI install Windows 8 on one of these systems: HP Elitebook 2760p convertible, ASUS EP121 tablet or a Dell Inspiron Duo convertible.

Good News:  These Virtual Machines Are Supported

• Hyper-V in Windows Server 2008 R2
• VMware Workstation 8.0 for Windows
• VirtualBox 4.1.2 for Windows

Beware:  Window 8 won’t install here: Microsoft Virtual PC, Windows 7 XP Mode  VMware Workstation 7.x or older.  The reason is they don’t support Hypervisor Type 1.

Guy Recommends:  A Free Trial of the Network Performance Monitor (NPM) v11.5

SolarWinds’ Orion performance monitor will help you discover what’s happening on your network.  This utility will also guide you through troubleshooting; the dashboard will indicate whether the root cause is a broken link, faulty equipment or resource overload.

What I like best is the way NPM suggests solutions to network problems.  Its also has the ability to monitor the health of individual VMware virtual machines.  If you are interested in troubleshooting, and creating network maps, then I recommend that you try NPM now.

Strange But True

People asked for 64-bit versions of Windows 8 (and 7) to run in Virtual machines, but when Microsoft deliver 64-bit compatibility, most people choose to install 32-bit versions for ease of use and performance reasons.

Important:  Because Microsoft’s installs are so easy, many enthusiasts don’t read the instructions!  Consequently, the Windows 8 fora are full of disgruntled readers who did not realize they cannot uninstall Windows 8 Preview.

Plan B – Dual Boot: If you have a second partition of at least 20 GB then you could install Windows 8 there.  The result would be:
C: Old Operating System
D: Windows 8

Please think through how to preserve any existing files on that second partition before allowing the Windows 8 install to format the D: partition.  Once you have installed Windows 8, pay close attention to menu choices as soon as the machine powers on.

Guy Recommends:  SolarWinds’ Log & Event Management Tool

LEM will alert you to problems such as when a key application on a particular server is unavailable.  It can also detect when services have stopped, or if there is a network latency problem.  Perhaps this log and event management tool’s most interesting ability is to take corrective action, for example by restarting services, or isolating the source of a maleware attack.

How to Install Windows 8

The scenario: you have created a bootable DVD from the .iso image, which you downloaded from MSDN or another internet site.  Check the BIOS is set to boot from DVD.  Next fired up your test computer with the Windows 8 DVD in its caddy.  All you have to do is catch the screen which says: ‘Press any key to boot from CD or DVD’.

The instructions are very similar to previous Microsoft Windows installs.  This was the quickest installation of a Microsoft operating system that I can remember, it took only 28 minutes including me formatting a drive and checking options.

Beware: At the very beginning nothing seeming to happen.  When you see a picture of a fish with an upside-down ‘8’ coming out if it’s mouth, have faith!  After about 3 minutes it will fade away and familiar install menus will appear:

Instructions for a Custom Install

• Keyboard: USA, or change to a country such as United Kingdom.
• Product key (Customer preview DNJXJ-7XBW8-2378T-X22TX-BKG7J)
• Accept the license agreement.
• Upgrade or Custom: I chose ‘Custom’ because I wanted to dual boot.
  Alternatively, run setup from your existing OS and ‘Upgrade’
• Select the Drive and Partition.
• If you need to format the partition select: Drive options (advanced)

Theoretically it’s possible to install Windows 8 with only a dozen clicks, but I was happy to detour and visit an extra 4 menus and get my custom choices.

Post-installation

I am so pleased that Microsoft ask for the product key at the beginning of the Windows 8 install, consequently, we now have only simple questions such as the new machine’s name.  I was impressed (and relieved) that Windows 8 found the NIC drivers and connected to my physical network automatically.  Naturally, it needed the password for the wireless connection. 

Logon with a Microsoft Account (Windows Live ID)
The Windows 8 install completed without my intervention.  I was able to logon with my Microsoft Account (Windows Live ID).

Windows 8 «Upgrade» from Win7 or Developer Preview

There were some pleasant surprising when I upgraded TO Windows 8 Consumer Preview.  Amazingly, you can upgrade to Windows 8 Consumer Preview from Windows Developer Preview.  Less surprisingly you can upgrade from Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP. 

Microsoft set the gold standard for installs, everything was simple until I came to the logon.  Here the legacy settings haunted me, the USER ICONS for the old Windows 7 accounts were so big I could not see them all!  I had a problem because Windows 8 seemed obsessed with a Windows Live ID for logon and I forget my password.  Problem solved, I logged on with another of my accounts.

Troubleshooting Windows 8 Install

Error: Sorry, we’re having trouble determining your PC Windows Consumer Preview. Please close setup and try again

Solution: Download the .iso file once more, the first one is probably corrupted.

Dual Booting Windows 8 and Windows 7

Before you create a dual boot configuration remember that you cannot uninstall the Windows 8 Consumer Preview.  Now you can dual boot provided you plan ahead and create a 50 GB partition BEFORE you begin the Windows 8 install.  The trick is to select ‘Custom’ during the first section of the setup.
