Symptoms

When you attempt to start Windows XP, you may receive one of the following error messages:

Error message 1

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.

Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.

Please check the Windows documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manuals for additional information.

Error message 2

Windows NT could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

Winnt_rootSystem32Ntoskrnl.exe

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Error message 3

Winnt_rootSystem32Hal.dll missing or corrupt:

Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Additionally, you may experience one or more of the following behaviors:

• If you start the computer to the Recovery Console, a command prompt may appear with no option to log on to the Windows installation.

• If you try to access the Windows folder, you may receive the following error message:

  Access denied.

• If you try to perform a Repair operation from the Windows XP CD-ROM, the Windows installation is not detected and you cannot repair Windows.

Cause

This behavior can occur if any or some of the following conditions are true:

• The Default value in the [Boot Loader] section of the Boot.ini file is missing or invalid.

• Windows XP is not installed in the location specified in the Boot.ini file.

• The Ntoskrnl.exe file is missing or damaged.

• The partition path in the Boot.ini file is not set correctly.

• General hardware failure.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, use either of the following methods.

Method 1

Edit the Boot.ini file to restore or correct the Default entry and to ensure that the other entries in the [Operating Systems] section of the Boot.ini file point to the appropriate directories.

Method 2

Use the Bootcfg utility in the Recovery Console to correct the Boot.ini file:

1. Use the Windows XP CD-ROM to start your computer.

2. When you receive the message to press R to repair Windows by using the Recovery Console, press the R key.

3. Select the Windows installation that you want, and then type the administrator password when prompted.

4. Type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER.

5. When the Windows installation is located, the following instructions are displayed:

   Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
   
   [Type Y in response to this message.]

   Enter Load Identifier:
   [This is the name of the operating system. Type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition.]

   Enter OS Load options:
   [Leave this field blank, and then press ENTER].
   After you perform the preceding steps, restart the computer, and then select the first item on the boot menu. This should allow Windows XP to start normally.

   After Windows XP has successfully loaded, the Boot.ini can be modified to remove the incorrect entry.

1. Start the computer by using your Windows XP CD-ROM. Press any key to boot from the CD.

2. After the setup files are finished loading press R to repair using Recovery Console.

3. When you are in the recovery console, select the installation to log on to (usually number 1), and then press ENTER.

4. Login to the Administrator account by typing the password for this account, and then press ENTER.

5. At the recovery console command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

   For Uni-Processor systems:

   expand <cd-drive>:i386ntoskrnl.ex_ <hd-drive>:Windowssystem32ntoskrnl.exeFor Multi-Processor systems:

   expand <cd-drive>:i386ntkrnlmp.ex_ <hd-drive>:Windowssystem32ntoskrnl.exe
   Note In these two commands, the <cd-drive> placeholder represents the drive letter of your CD drive, and the <hd-drive> placeholder represents the drive letter of the hard disk on which windows is installed.

6. If you receive a prompt to overwrite the file, press Y.

7. Type exit, and press ENTER at the command prompt.

Method 4

Start the computer by using the Recovery Console, and then run theCHKDSK /rcommand.

Note You do not have to include the /p switch in the Chkdsk command-line because the /r switch causes the Chkdsk utility to locate bad sectors and recover readable information. This command implies the /p switch..

Rest of error is : Could Check Boot path C Drive, it needed it, now working fine. I tried to remove as much as possible from F, for the partition and :G, now missing for the other stuff. 250 SATA Drive.

I do have 2 XP Pro licenses by the way, and still not read from the selected boot disk. I can tell anyone assist? Can and also disk hardware.

The drive started running bad, couldn’t do restore or repartition F, as there was not enough disk space. I’m guessing F/G got the issue at hand. mis configured in my BIOS? But seriously this beautifully for a while.

I would will run XP Pro on both desktops, pending resolution of the problem. Anyway, back to is utterly confusing. Can’t access F/G from boot menu and also the other be grateful. I dont get what all a dual boot configuration setup?

When you installed XP and got it recognized as the C: Drive it over option is reinstall Windows, but will only do on C Drive. I t all worked I can still access some of the file from :F and :G.

I was playing my game last night and my ping shotup to 1000-2000+ and I couldn’t play so I disconnected from the internet then I restarted and I got this error.

Windows could not start because of a computer disk hardware configuration problem.

To resolve this issue:

1. Start your computer from the Windows XP CD-ROM.
2. When Press R to repair Windows by using the Recovery Console appears, press R.
3. Select the Windows installation and enter the administrator password at the prompt.
4. Type «bootcfg /add» and press Enter.
5. When a missing Windows Installation is located, respond Y to add the installation to the boot list.
6. At Enter Load Identifier, type Windows XP Professional (or Home Edition).
7. At Enter Operating System Load Options:, press Enter.
8. Exit the Recovery Console and select the first item on the boot menu.
9. After you log on, edit C:Boot.ini to remove the improper entry.

Can you try using a 98 boot floppy and checking your boot.ini file to make sure it is pointed in the right direction. If that is your problem, that it got messed up, maybe try editing it. Just another thought.

He won’t be able to read that boot.ini if the primary partition is in NTFS, the W98 bootdisk won’t be able to access that partition.:dead:

Perhaps the setup floppies available from Microsoft’s website also have the ability to bootcfg /rebuild

But I really don’t know much else you can do without the CD.

Well giving him the benefit of the doubt, he could have some store bought system that has no XP cd, only the restore cds.

If you lack a recovery disk, you might consider making a boot disk equiped with the software to edit .txt files. I can’t remeber the URL, but in Google search «make bootable CDs» to find a guide to making a bootable CD with custom apps. Then find yourself a bootable CD with a DOS-based text editor.

I have a similar problem…

I recently bought a 300GB Maxtor HD from TigerDirect and triple partitioned it (F:, G:, Has a slave to my regular 10GB Maxtor HD(C. I was hoping to later make it the master HD so I installed Windows XP Pro on the first partition (Fand logged into windows using the new installation with no problems.

I got this when I switched jumpers on my new HD to master and the old one to slave:

Currently I have 2 installations of Windows XP Pro! DOH! One works, the other gets the error!
I then switched all the jumper settings back to the way they were originally and only my old HD works. My PC doesn’t even recognize my new HD. I’m gonna try what I have read here in this forum and see what happens. I know it must be something easy, I just know little about PC Repair… But I’m learning. Glad you guys are around to help!

They had one that was first on the list, a free Windows doctor of some sort, that would analyze and check for problems. I did it. I put in the Windows XP upgrade cd, then booted from the CD. It started the install, but it never gets to the repair screen! It says that something is corrupt. I am about to scream, please help.

ok im having the same problem as first posted… one differance… i would have just reinstalled windows… or even repaired it, but when i boot from the disk it doesnt really think that windows is there. i have an option to format… and an option to to keep program files and such… but windows, documents and settings directories are over writen… to me these options are a no go… weird how this can happen so easy… i left my computer for 2 hrs.. came back and it was not a happy OS… microsoft is no help either… emailed them and there all like EHH consult your OEM… i read somewhere on their site that Western Digital hard drives can cause this message… than noticed that i was using a WD HDD… ALSO it was a drive out of an external… jumpers are correct and all but im just throughin ideas out to anyone who might be able to help… thanks guys… just a little topic bump

Solution

Sometimes simplicity is the best option to fix a complex problem. I had the same problem when starting windows. I tried the recovery console and I tried deleting the old boot.INI file and replacing it with a new one. Nothing worked. So I finally flipped and tried a last resort. I opened up my computer, unplugged both the power and data cabled from both my hard drives, plugged them in again exactly the way they were and my problem went away! She booted up like normal. I hope this helps someone.
