Trivia[]

  • U5 got delayed 5 times (May 30, 2017 => May 29, 2018 / December 28, 2016 (then to 2017) => January 2017 => May 2017 (again) => June 7, 2017 (Update 5 assets were given 5 days before it’s release (June 9, 2017)) => June 14, 2017).
    • U5R2 got delayed 2 times due to the impact of COVID-19 and MinderiaYoutuber have a job to work at (May 21, 2020 => April 24, 2021 => TBA), but it is unclean how COVID-19 could disrupt Update 5 R2 development, because WHwNRV can be created at home, not even getting outside to create WHwNRV U5 R2 and WHwNRV U6.
  • U5 has most of the versions removed (including Windows Rift).
    • Albeit it had only happened since Update 3, and Update 5 had the most of ideas added to it, opposing the other.
  • U5 is the first update which includes Future Software Releases, -∞ and ∞ (proporsely fake numbers), extended 9x series, extended Vista series.
  • U5 is the only update with NROS (MinderiaOS). It will be changed to remove MinderiaOS later in U5 R2.
  • WHwNRV U1 & U2 had original names: Windows History with Never Released Versions — Original Version (U1) & Windows History with Never Released Versions (U2)
  • Boyfriend’s WinSonar History with Never Released Versions is copy of MinderiaYT’s WHWNRV Update 1.

Update 5 Revision 2

Update 6

TBA This will be a new update set to be released in late 2020 (or possibly early 2021)

Windows Never Released

Windows Never Released (abbreviated to WNR) is a cult started by jhj22 in 2008. It is where people make fictional Windows bootscreens and (rarely) desktop using programs such as Photoshop or Paint.NET and often compile then into videos.

Windows Mockups (WM) is the same as WNR, and was popular in 2017, while people here doing bootscreens frequently. During 2017 there was an increase in «cringy» WNRs. This lead to Aero Community members starting to consider WNR dead, leading to Twiglets1888 starting the Windows Mockups cult, where each idea would usually have accompanying desktops, logon screens or programs too. This would give people a deeper understanding of how the idea may have looked and worked. However, in July 2017 following a drama everyone agreed to end the elitism and return to doing WNRs instead of WMs.

WNR is worstened in 2018-19, after several aeroians and minderians quits making WNR videos. However, Spyonclear, TLakituGamingTV, ChromaticTM are creating quality WNR content, while being new at it, so there is not always something bad happening.

NROS seems like WNR too, but it is non-Windows mockups.

Etymology [ edit | edit source ]

Originally, fictional versions of Windows we’re called Never Released Windows Versions by jhj22, but it was believed the name got distorted by aqwert22, naming the mockups videos as Windows Never Released. It took longer to blame the Windows Never Released name for it’s english language being broken, which leading some peoples to create Windows Mockups videos.

Pre-History [ edit | edit source ]

  • August 1998 — Created Windows Titanic 98, which likely inspired present-day WNRs.
  • 2001 — Released Windows RG on Newgrounds.
  • 2005 — Released Windows XXP on Newgrounds.
  • 2008 — Released Windows Doors on Newgrounds.

Reception [ edit | edit source ]

Redeeming quality [ edit | edit source ]

Nermal Cat, Neptune98, fean, Glosswired, and a few more WNRers is praised by high-quality Windows arts (Bootscreens, desktops, etc).

Criticism [ edit | edit source ]

While the cult is little known, it has gained some infamy outside of the community for the low quality and unrealisticness of many of the bootscreens, as the cult is mostly associated with works by Minderia and his followers. The term «Windows Never Released» has also been criticised for being broken English, along with it being misleading. People who are unaware of what WNR is think that it means «unreleased Windows versions» and may start accusing the creator of that video of lying.

The community also has a bad reputation for its toxicity and immaturity. Since 2017, the community has split into two sides — «Minderians» and «non-Minderians». This resulted from many people using assets created by Minderia, which is frowned upon by the older part of the community for being lazy and low effort. The splitting has gotten even worse, with some people being referred to as terms such as «Arsenians», «Cheat Manians», «Tartarians» and «Fitians». The community overall has been labelled by some as a «kindergarten», especially from people who are unaware of the more mature part of the community.

Even further WNR being criticised thanks by Arsen54800 and Mockup Man (former), while still using Update 5 and it’s modifications.

With Windows 10 in the lead right now in terms of use and market penetration, the software giant has been offering systems, platforms and programs to get here for years. In fact, since the first version of what Windows is today, decades have passed, as well as successes and resounding failures for this particular firm.

Windows Versions That Were Never Released

Surely most of you remember fondly versions such as Windows XP and Windows 7 that have now practically disappeared. On the contrary, there are also those that did not have much less the expected acceptance among the general public. This is the case of Vista or ME, among others. Of course, what perhaps not all of you know is that at the same time there were projects or versions of Windows that were finally canceled by those of Redmond.

We are referring to operating systems planned or started by the software company , but eventually canceled. For those of you who do not know them, we will talk about these versions of Windows that did not exist.

Windows Cairo

This was a version of the operating system that Microsoft announced back in 1991 and was given the code name Cairo. Then the firm got down to work on its development in 1992, work in which it was involved until 1995. However, despite all the efforts that were put into the project, it was finally canceled.

But not all the work was in vain, since part of its characteristics were transferred to other projects, as for example happened later with Windows NT 4.0 , which was created on that basis.

Windows Nashville

We can also mention Windows Nashville, an operating system that was initially thought to be a worthy successor to the popular Windows 95 . In fact, it was planned to be the second system in the Windows 9x family, all based on a 4.10 kernel. The project as such began throughout 1995 and was intended to be launched the following year. But it also ended up in oblivion, although part of it became part of Windows 98, among other projects.

Windows Neptune

Surely at the same time many of you also miss Windows NT , another of the brand’s benchmarks. Well, when we talk about Neptune, we are referring to what was to be the first version of Windows NT for home users. Its development was carried out between 1998 and 1999, and its launch was planned for 2001. But this was another system that did not end well, since at the beginning of 2000 it was canceled and it joined the Odyssey project, all to end up being part of the mythical as well as beloved Windows XP .

Windows Odyssey

For those of you who don’t know, this other software threat was originally going to become the successor to Windows 2000 . Its development was carried out in parallel to Neptune, which we talked about before, but this was also canceled. But not everything was lost, since like the previous case, Odyssey ended up being part of XP. Therefore, as we can see, although some of these Microsoft operating system projects never saw the light of day, they were included, partly in highly important post-hoc projects.

Windows Longhorn

This is one of the projects that did not finish launching from Microsoft that sounded the most at the time. With Longhorn we refer to another of those versions of the system that was called to be part of the Windows family and that began to be developed in 2002. In principle, the plans were for it to be a minor update for Windows XP. However, over time the project began to grow and many more functions and features were added.

All this led to a project full of stability flaws, so the first tests became highly unstable and therefore invalid. It got to the point that the software company made the decision to re-focus development in 2004 and cancel Longhorn. Eventually all these efforts ended up leading to the controversial Windows Vista that most people liked so little.

Windows Blackcomb

Finally we will talk about Blackcomb, the operating system that was originally going to be the successor to XP) but with many other new functions that it would integrate. But as the months went by, Microsoft made the determination to bring several of these news to the aforementioned, Longhorn. This led to the fact that when the development of Blackcomb changed in focus, it ended in the Vienna project and that is how Windows 7 finally came to light, which surely many of you still yearn for.

Windows History with Never Released Versions (Update kits)

The Update Kits or famously known as «Update #» is a term used for the Minderia’s WHwNRV kits (For make your WNRs using the assets used in the Minderia’s videos)

The reason why it’s named as «Update kits» is the update numbering Minderia used to feature on his videos, naming from Update 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & so on (with few exceptions such as Update SZR X (by SectorWire ) and Update Spirited (cancelled kit by Vladislav Fesko ))

Contents

History

Before update kits

During the Update 1 and Update 2 of WHwNRV, MinderiaYoutuber uploaded a pack with the sounds used in that videos.

In Mid-2016(?), with the release of Windows History with Never Released Versions Update 3/Update 4(?), Minderia released to the public the assets that he uses on his WHwNRV videos, including bootscreens, logos, sounds and other kind of assets.

The fall of the update kits and the Minderian style

The trend of making Minderian versions and using the update kits has been decreasing in popularity since 2017, due to most of them having repetitive styles, not bringing enough style variants, it’s lack of versatility and not being ideal for Windows Never Released beginners. Many content creators stopped using update kits and switched to use the OS Mockup Kit or any other kit that does not contain Minderian content.

Such few exceptions are GMM still using update kits in his OSM series for future part and SectorWire completely separating Update SZR X from his main WNR/OSM series in order to keep his WNR and OSM screens creative while still continuing developing Update SZR X (he issued this in a video).

Snap Layouts, Snap Groups and Desktops provide an even more powerful way to multitask and optimize your screen real estate.

Chat from Microsoft Teams integrated into the taskbar provides a faster way to connect to the people you care about.

Windows 11 comes with a new Microsoft Store rebuilt with an all-new design making it easier to search and discover your favorite apps, games, shows, and movies in one trusted location. We look forward to continuing our journey to bring Android apps to Windows 11 and the Microsoft Store through our collaboration with Amazon and Intel; this will start with a preview for Windows Insiders over the coming months.

Windows 11 is the most inclusively designed version of Windows with new accessibility improvements that were built for and by people with disabilities.

Windows 11 unlocks new opportunities for developers and creators. We are opening the Store to allow more developers and independent software vendors (ISVs) to bring their apps to the Store, improving native and web app development with new developer tools, and making it easier for you to refresh the look and feel across all our app designs and experiences.

Windows 11 is optimized for speed, efficiency and improved experiences with touch, digital pen and voice input.

Businesses can also test Windows 11 in preview today in Azure Virtual Desktop, or at general availability by experiencing Windows 11 in the new Windows 365.
