Windows Longhorn build 4001 is the first Milestone 4 build of Windows Longhorn. This build was first found from screenshots that were shown by Dr. Nicholas Rush at YouArePwned’s «Yet Another Longhorn Board», and by user bashar2000 on the BetaArchive forums.[1] It was eventually uploaded to the aforementioned website on 15 January 2013.[2]

While some features such as the Desktop Compositing Engine and Start Page are mostly retained from build 3718, it notably contains a new setup procedure. This build also features the old M3 background, where it would be later replaced in build 4002.

New features[edit | edit source]

OOBE[edit | edit source]

This build contains a new OOBE that replaced the Windows XP OOBE used in previous builds. The OOBE in this build only asks for account names to create (these will be Administrator accounts) and then finishes.

WIM installation[edit | edit source]

This build is among one of the first builds to use a new WIM-based setup routine, one of the first radical departures from the previous Windows NT codebase. The WIM-based setup routine works by having all of the setup files stored within a single WIM disk image, INSTALL.WIM. When the installation media is booted directly, the WinPE (Windows Preinstallation Environment) loads into the graphical user interface itself. After it images the WIM file to the system partition, the system reboots to finish the setup by installing the hardware and running the OOBE. Microsoft stated that their goal with this routine was to allow installations of Windows to finish in as little as 15 minutes.[3]

While the installation is basic (using the Avalon interface) and lacks partitioning, it is capable of detecting hardware (including the CPU). As a result, it cannot be installed on processors older than a Pentium III, alongside a few virtual CPUs like the default emulated QEMU processor. The processor requirement would be removed in all subsequent pre-reset builds for unknown reasons.

Also, as the ability to upgrade from a previous build was not implemented at this time, the user only can clean install this build.

Bugs and quirks[edit | edit source]

Installation[edit | edit source]

  • Many drivers aren’t installed by default during the hardware portion of setup and have to be installed manually.
  • As this build’s setup cannot partition the drive, it is required to partition the drive before installation via the diskpart command.
  • The setup doesn’t ask for the username, organization information, and time zone, so the default username of «Windows User» without an organization is used in place. Alongside, the time zone defaults to the Pacific Time Zone.
  • To install or run this build in VMware Workstation, you must set the hardware compatibility to version 9.0 or earlier.
  • On some machines, the WinPE part of setup either crashes or will throw an Avalon error. If this occurs, the machine is not compatible with this build.
    • This also applies to 86Box, even with the processor set to VIA Cyrix III, the only processor on the emulator which gets past through CPU detection.

Taskbar[edit | edit source]

An interesting quirk with the New Taskbar application is that buttons appear to not be centered.

Desktop Compositing Engine[edit | edit source]

Desktop Compositing Engine requires either compatible hardware or VMware Workstation with 6.5.x display drivers to work, otherwise it will result in a black screen that can only be exited by a hard reset.

MyTVApp[edit | edit source]

MyTVApp crashes when it opens.

Media Center[edit | edit source]

Due to the new WIM setup method, components related to the Media Center application cannot be installed on this build. It is still possible to trigger the edition change by attempting to install Media Center and then rebooting.

Control Panel[edit | edit source]

Display Properties mentions the Luna theme as the Plex theme.

Windows Longhorn was the pre-release codename for Windows Vista and was the successor to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (built from NT 5.2 codebase). Development on the OS started in May 2001 and went through two unique development cycles separated by a development reset in 2004. The reset occurred as Microsoft’s development staff had lost focus on the project as a whole and what was required to be done in order to bring it to market. Features were being written into the OS at an alarming rate with a significant lack of QA or vision of true requirement. This combined with Microsoft’s trustworthy computing initiatives caused the reset.

Several features of Longhorn planned that were actually shipped include the glass replicating Aero theme (which followed the Slate and Jade themes from earlier builds), along with the Windows Sidebar — although this was shipped as a standalone utility where as most builds (at least in pre-reset) shipped this as part of explorer.exe. Numerous improvements to the Windows Explorer, along with an updated Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11, instant search, new 3-d games and other items made it into the final version of Windows Vista.

Release notes

Windows Longhorn existed as a continuation of the Windows 2003 codebase although after build 4094 development was reset; restarted from scratch as the original Longhorn builds were growing in complication (described as ‘a mess’) and Microsoft introduced a new focus on security. These are the pre-reset builds.

Download Windows Longhorn ISO 32 Bit / 64 Bit free

Microsoft Windows Longhorn is initially operated under the tag of Windows XP and considerably known as Microsoft Vista. The free download is believed to be a standalone ISO installer with access to both 32 bit and 62-bit architecture.

The license agreement of a few builds of Longrun drops a statement that “Microsoft products specifically have a codenamed whistler. Most of Microsoft’s developers are programmed to re-tasked to introduce productive updates to Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 to boost security and reduce every possible threat. Longrun was a reboot to start out work on componentizing the features which may be intended for an actual OS release.

Moreover, some previously announced features by Microsoft such as WinFS were resulted to postpone or dropped, and a replacement software development process was called the Security Development Lifecycle which was officially incorporated in an effort to affect concerns with the security of the Windows codebase, which is programmed in C, and C++. Longhorn became mentioned as Vista in 2005.

Overview for Windows Longhorn

At the starting days of launch, Microsoft longhorn was released on a small platform but later it was announced globally understanding the demand of the longhorn. Later, Microsoft decided to release longhorn by the name Windows Vista. Longhorn is designed with a robust performance to consume minimum system resources and offer complete authorization and access to the users.

The initial stages of Longhorn were usually articulated by incremental improvements and updates to Windows XP. A typical build label would appear as if “Longhorn Build 366.3.Lab06_N.020728-1728”.

Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Windows Vista are 32-bit operating systems supporting a physical address range of up to 4 GB. However, this range is subdivided to manage both the computer’s PCI address range (also referred to as MMIO) and RAM. The PCI address range is employed to manage much of the computer’s components including the BIOS, IO cards, networking, PCI hubs, bus bridges, PCI-Express, and today’s high-performance video/graphics cards (including their video memory).

A high-performance x86- based computer typically needs 0.6 to 1 GB for the PCI address range. On boot up the BIOS allocates PCI addresses down from 4 GB to manage the computer’s components, then the BIOS allocates physical user RAM from address 0 up to rock bottom of the PCI address range or up to the quantity of installed physical RAM, whichever is a smaller amount. The upper limit on available physical RAM is typically between 3 GB and 3.4 GB

Windows XP Professional x64 Edition and Windows Vista 64-bit enable address ranges above 4 GB on computers with large address infrastructures (where the whole system has quite 4 GB addressing capabilities via the processor, chipset, physical memory capacity, etc). The HP xw4400, xw6400, xw8400, and xw9400 workstations have the specified infrastructures.

The memory remapping feature on the HP workstations (implemented within the HP Workstation BIOS) also recovers the RAM that might normally overlap the PCI address range by remapping it above the highest of physical memory.

Example:- When 8 GB has installed the computer boots as noted above within the 32-bit Windows section, then the HP BIOS remaps the physical RAM in the PCI address range (that would rather be unavailable) to addresses above 8 GB in order that a 64-bit OS can access it. Thus, roughly 8 GB becomes available.

Windows XP x64 Edition and Windows Vista 64-bit eliminate the three GB to three.4 GB RAM allocation limit on x86-based computers with large address infrastructures just like the HP workstations listed above, and therefore the memory remapping feature within the HP Workstation BIOS even recovers the RAM within the PCI address range (MMIO) by remapping it above the highest of physical RAM. Therefore, nearly all physical RAM are often made available.

Longhorn

This page is under construction.
Longhorn is the codename for Windows Vista. Originally conceived in 2001, its development was reset in 2004; around 2 years later it would be released as Vista. The codename would also be used for Server 2008. This page lists wallpapers from both before and after Longhorn was renamed, for the sake of convenience, but does not list wallpapers in the final release except when there are differences such as saturation or cropping. Note that this wiki will refer to Longhorn as the codename alone rather than «Windows Longhorn», due to that phrasing not being used by Microsoft.

Wallpapers

Wallpapers left over from XP are not listed here.

Pre-reset

During late 2002 and early-mid 2003 the default wallpapers were auroras created by Microsoft’s own designers, including Robert Stein. From late 2003 onward they would license rights managed images from Getty Images. All of these wallpapers share the same filename, Bliss.bmp, however this wiki refers to them just as default wallpapers to avoid confusion. Jenny Lam was involved in the wallpaper selection process, like with post-reset Longhorn/Vista. The other wallpapers remained the same as XP’s throughout this phase of Longhorn’s development.

Demos

As a result of Longhorn’s ambitiousness, Microsoft produced a large amount of Macromedia Director demos to demonstrate the many ideas the company had for Longhorn. Each of these have their own unique wallpapers, with a few of them being recycled from previous versions of Windows such as Windows 2000 and XP, along with Microsoft Plus! 98.

This list is incomplete, as there are demos that have not yet saw the light of the day, plus many wallpapers are covered by UI elements making them very difficult to reverse search. Also, please note that some of these wallpapers may not even be official at all. In some cases, there is no way to know for sure; however they will be listed here until proven they are fake.

Post-reset

Please note that this article also includes wallpapers that were added after Longhorn was renamed to Vista.

Builds 5001 to 5231

During this point in development, all of the wallpapers were identical to XP’s except the default wallpapers and later the branding wallpaper.

Builds 5355 to 5840.16384

By build 5355, most of the previous wallpapers were removed and replaced with an entirely new set of 1600×1200 wallpapers, with the widescreens ones being at 1600×900, oddly at 16:9 despite 16:10 being more common back then. However, the mountain lake wallpaper would stay, albeit at a higher resolution and slightly more cropped, along with two of the placeholder wallpapers. This set would be slightly updated in build 5469, where the default wallpaper is changed to the wallpaper that is img22 in the final release; the previous wallpaper was reallocated to img37.

Starter

When the Starter SKU was first added, it featured the same wallpaper set as other editions (in turn being the same wallpapers used in most versions of XP), but with the addition of the three wallpapers from the Indian version of Windows XP Starter Edition, with Dunagiri being set as the default wallpaper. By build 5355(?) the set of wallpapers that appear in the final release were added, although this set was slightly updated by build 5477. This resulted in a handful being upgraded to widescreen 1600×1024, while img746 was changed from the CMYK color model to RGB.

Note that the table below only shows wallpapers that feature differences from the final ones.

Build 5840.16389 onwards

Build 5840.16389 replaced the wallpapers with the ones that appear in the RTM release, adding new ones such as Hamad Darwish’s two wallpapers, while removing a handful of them, including the Beta 2 default wallpaper and replacing most of the Light Auras with designed ones as opposed to photography. Additionally, the resolutions of the remaining 4:3 and widescreen wallpapers are now in 1920×1440 and 1920×1200 respectively.

Sample pictures

All builds of Longhorn/Vista prior to build 5310 feature the same sample pictures as XP. Said build adds a set of 15 new sample pictures; the XP ones are also installed as the package for them is still included, although it was removed by build 5329. Creek and Garden were replaced with completely different images by build 5337. By build 5477, Microsoft made slight alterations to the sample pictures such as adjusting the saturation, although some of these could be due to color model changes. Descriptions, ratings and tags were also added.

User account pictures

Builds 40xx to 5342

Prior to build 5355, all builds of Longhorn use the same set of user account pictures as XP, although they added new guest and default user account pictures.

Builds 5355 to 5378

By build 5355, a new set of user account pictures was introduced, which was mostly complete but had three placeholder pictures. The previous guest user account picture was carried over, so it is not listed here. The rest are the same as the final set so they are also not listed here.

Build 5381 onwards

Build 5381 introduced a near final set of user account pictures, replacing both user and usertile1 with an identical gerbera picture and usertile2 with a robot picture. This set was slightly updated by build 5487, with the guest user account picture being replaced with a new picture and usertile1 being removed, as it is merely a duplicate of user.

Logon backgrounds

Pre-reset

The logon background of builds 4048 to 4093 is solid black; this was also the case with post-reset build 5048.

Post-reset

The logon background in very early post-reset builds is the same as of XP’s, comprised of multiple elements. Build 5048, like later pre-reset builds, uses black for its logon background (Windows 2000-style logon screen is enabled by default; the Windows XP logon screen can be enabled in the Control Panel), while builds 5098 to 5259 use a blue-black gradient background (rendered in real-time) with a transparent Windows logo graphic in the top-left corner. Build 5270 introduces a new aurora background; by build 5355, this is replaced with a slightly updated version in multiple resolutions. By build 5487, the logon background has been changed to the one that appears in the final release.
