DeepFaceLab
The leading software for creating deepfakes
DeepFaceLab is currently the world’s leading software for creating deepfakes, with over 95% of deepfake videos created with DeepFaceLab. DeepFaceLab is an open-source deepfake system that enables users to swap the faces on images and on video. It offers an imperative and easy-to-use pipeline that even those without a comprehensive understanding of the deep learning framework or model implementation can use; and yet also provides a flexible and loose coupling structure for those who want to strengthen their own pipeline with other features without having to write complicated boilerplate code.
DeepFaceLab can achieve results with high fidelity that are indiscernible by mainstream forgery detection approaches. Apart from seamlessly swapping faces, it can also de-age faces, replace the entire head, and even manipulate speech (though this will require some skill in video editing).Downloads:

This version of Filter Blender has the capability of mixing modifications with a previous video frame. The original version by Steven Don could only use one mask or one set of percentage mixes. This version supports multiple masks and mixes. You can apply other filters to one area using a mask, then apply other mods to a different area using another mask, and so on. The original had, in my opinion, confusing options which mixed the current frame with saved frame B and applied the mask to frame B. The current version mixes the masked current frame with saved frame A.
To enable this filter:
Move fblenderM.vdf to the plugin folder for virtualdub.
To use it:
1. Add «filter blenderM» in your virtualdub filter chain. This first instance must be to Store the current frame to A
2. Then add the filters you wish to modify the video.
3. Put it in your filter chain and select «Blend»

Aeyae Remux can be used to extract portions of original video into a separate file. Aeyae Remux is a GOP-based editor (GOP = Group Of Pictures), which means it doesn’t do any transcoding, only remuxing. However, it can truncate a GOP.
Aeyae Remux can be used to stitch together files… within reason. Since it is only a remuxer — stitched files must be of compatible format. This means stitched files must have the same audio/video codecs, and codec properties (width, height, sample rate, etc…). That said… Aeyae Remux currently doesn’t check or enforce this restriction, so beware — garbage input will likely produce garbage output.
Linux binaries are provided as AppImage, built on Ubuntu 14.04.
8 GB of RAM (but more is better) is highly recommended if working with source files longer than 2 hours.Downloads:

Clipstitch
Uility to make home movies from your digital camera files
To make movies from your camera (or phone) video files.
FFmpeg is a professional-quality, free, open-source program for video editing, with the ability to implement a huge number of operations and handle every data format! This kind of ability comes at a cost: its commands are quite complex-looking and difficult to use and remember.
Clipstitch runs as a front-end to ffmpeg so that you use only the sub-set of ffmpeg commands necessary for making a home movie from your digital camera, puts them in easier-to-read form, and internally combines multiple ffmpeg commands to do certain tasks.. You can put Clipstitch commands into a text file and run as a script or type them in manually at a prompt.
You can:
Select portions of motion files with optional fades/slowmo/speedup, reverse play backwards.
Adjust clip order.
Concatenate to make your final «movie».
V5.5 introduced captions, and special effects features.

The best open-source video editing software allows the user to efficiently and more specifically edit their videos. The difference between open source and other software is that open source allows for coding changes that can personalize your experience. Before deciding on the software that is right for you, make sure you learn the secrets of editing.
If you are not used to this type of format, we suggest starting off with a program like OpenShot. OpenShot is a program that is great for both beginners and experts, so it will be able to still be used as you grow as an editor. However, if you are a seasoned professional, try Natron at Github. This powerful software is the best for VFX.
The best open-source video editing software allows you to create a tailor-made video editing experience, is free, removes any licensing issues, and allows you to speak with the development team.
Best Overall: Shotcut
Shotcut
Key Specs
- Cost: Free
- Features: 4K-resolution content for video and images, adding tracks, splitting and trimming clips, shortcut keys, video/audio transitions, and stackable filters
- Operating System: Windows, Mac, and Linux
Why We Chose It
This free software is available on multiple operating systems and suitable for video editors at various skill levels, including easy-to-use features and a YouTube channel filled with tutorials.
Pros & Cons
Pros
-
Free software
-
Works on several operating systems
-
Suitable for beginner to advanced video editors
Cons
-
Fewer audio and transition options than some other services
-
Can be difficult to learn; time viewing tutorials is necessary for many users
Overview
It might not look overly impressive at a first glance, but Shotcut is actually a robust non-linear video editor with enough tools to satisfy most levels of video editing skill. The free cross-platform program—available on Windows, Mac, and Linux—opens up to a clean, minimal interface, ideal for new or casual editors who want to keep things simple. But once you start adding more modules depending on the functions you want to use, Shotcut starts to show its depth. Each panel can be un-docked, moved around, and re-docked or left floating, giving you nice control over how to arrange your workspace across one or more monitors.
Shotcut can work with a wide range of video and image formats, including 4K-resolution content. You won’t see an “Import” button, though; the software boasts “native timeline editing” with no import required. But you can still open and preview files in Shotcut just like in other editors, create a “playlist” of the media you’re using for the project, and drag clips into your timeline. The timeline has a full range of editing capabilities including adding tracks, splitting and trimming clips, and shortcut keys for these functions. There is also a strong selection of video/audio transitions and stackable filters, from stabilization to chroma key (green-screen effects).
The advanced features have some learning curve to them, but the Shotcut YouTube channel offers a collection of video tutorials to help. There’s also an online course available for purchase that has been reviewed and officially approved by Shotcut’s lead developer.
The Best Video Editing Software of 2023
Runner-Up, Best Overall: OpenShot
OpenShot
Key Specs
- Cost: Free
- Features: Adding unlimited tracks, transitions with real-time previews, keyframe-based animation, 3D animated titles, dedicated video and audio tracks
- Operating System: Windows, Mac, and Linux
Why We Chose It
OpenShot is an easy, free video editing software that’s a great choice for beginners and advanced editors alike. It’s available on multiple operating systems and features 3D animated tiles, which not all free programs offer.
Pros & Cons
Pros
-
Free software
-
Offers 3D animated tiles
-
Suitable for beginner to advanced video editors
Cons
-
Can be slow or have common operating issues
-
Fewer editing options than some other programs
Overview
OpenShot’s simple, user-friendly interface shows some extra polish you don’t always see in a free, open-source video editor. Combined with the built-in tutorial when you first launch the software and the full user guide available on the website, OpenShot makes video editing easy for beginners and experts alike. You can drag and drop media into the program to import it, and drag and drop to work with the clips on the timeline. You can add an unlimited number of tracks, and rather than each track being a dedicated “video track” or “audio track” like most editors, you can put any type of media into any track. As long as you can keep things straight, the added flexibility can be helpful.
The selection of included tools and effects aren’t groundbreaking, but you’ll find plenty to work with, including transitions with real-time previews and keyframe-based animation. One feature you don’t see in many other free products is 3D animated titles, which OpenShot can handle if you’ve also installed the open-source 3D-graphics software Blender (which itself happens to have video-editing capabilities, too).
OpenShot is available for Windows, Mac, and Linux as a free download, though donations and Patreon subscriptions are accepted through the website to support development.
6 Best Free Video Editing Software Programs for 2023
Best for Mac: Blender Video Sequence Editor
Blender
Key Specs
- Cost: Free
- Features: 3D creation tools including modeling, sculpting, painting, animation, game development, and more
- Operating System: Windows, Mac, and Linux
Why We Chose It
Blender is a great video editing software for Mac users, but it’s also available for Windows and Linux. This software offers more than just video editing with features for all things 3D.
Pros & Cons
Pros
-
Free software
-
Includes options for for various types of 3D animation
-
Professional-grade tools
Cons
-
Harder to use for just video editing with so many features to choose from
-
Blender Institute offers more advanced training, but is not free
Overview
Blender is unique in that video editing is only a fraction of what it can do. The free, open-source software, available for Mac, Windows, and Linux, is actually an entire suite of professional-grade 3D creation tools. You can use it for 3D modeling, sculpting, painting, animation, and much more. It includes powerful tools for visual compositing and even 3D game development.
Integrated within all of that is the Blender Video Sequence Editor (VSE), which can be a bit hard to get to and figure out at first, given that the interface is designed to handle much more than just video editing. Fortunately, there are many support resources available, from free tutorials to paid training from the Blender Institute and a Blender Cloud subscription. Once you know your way around, you’ll find the VSE to be a full-featured non-linear editor, with a multi-track timeline, cutting and trimming tools, keyboard shortcuts, and plenty of advanced options. Then, of course, you can always add in 3D graphics and animation if that’s something you’re into—or if the software inspires you to give it a shot.

- Cost: Free
- Features: Unlimited video and audio tracks, visible audio waveforms, preview rendering, “JKL” playback shortcuts, a variety of export file types and presets, transitions, effects, and filters
- Operating System: Linux (older or beta versions available for Mac and Windows)

Pros & Cons
Pros
-
Free software
-
Simple interface comparable to iMovie
-
Unlimited video and audio tracks
Cons
-
New versions are not offered for Mac and Windows users
-
Can be slow on some computers
Overview
Even though an older version can be downloaded for Mac and a beta version is available for Windows, Kdenlive, like much open-source software, was made to run on Linux operating systems. Built on the MLT media framework, it’s an excellent and popular Linux video editing solution and a top open-source editor in general. The interface is straightforward and easy-to-use, looking most familiar to people who have used iMovie. You can also customize it according to your needs and preferences.
Kdenlive’s timeline is fully functional, supporting unlimited video/audio tracks, visible audio waveforms, preview rendering, and “JKL” playback shortcuts. It comes with a strong set of transitions, effects, and filters, and it’s simple to drag them onto clips, modify their settings, and see a live preview. When you’re ready to export your finished video, you can choose from a large number of mainstream file types and presets.
The 5 Best Linux Video Editors of 2023
Runner-Up, Best for Linux: Flowblade
Flowblade
Key Specs
- Cost: Free
- Features: Transitions, image filters, custom titles, keyframe-based audio editing, mixing images and audio, moving and trimming clips, and more multitrack non-linear video tools
- Operating System: Linux
Why We Chose It
Available only for Linux, this video editing software offers fast, efficient performance for its users with a variety of tools and limited crashes.
Pros & Cons
Pros
-
Free software
-
Fast loading and operating
-
Suitable for beginner to advanced video editors
Cons
-
No versions for Mac or Windows
-
Fewer advanced video editing options than some competitors
Overview
Flowblade doesn’t offer versions for Mac or Windows at the time of writing—it focuses on providing a fast, stable video editing experience for Linux. By avoiding too many extra features that could slow it down and complicate the process for home users, it succeeds in creating a snappier loading and operating experience than a lot of other editing software. This also helps gives it added stability, cutting back on crashes that tend to hit other open-source products more frequently.
Flowblade’s modern-looking interface should feel familiar and intuitive to many, with timeline tool buttons that fit on a single row. Within this slightly pared-down toolbar are more than enough move and trim tools for the job, though its “insert editing” model that automatically pushes all clips together to the left may take some getting used to if you’re coming from other programs. It also benefits from the many effects available to Linux video editors, from transitions and image filters to custom titles and keyframe-based audio editing.

Avidemux

- Cost: Free
- Features: Applying filters, image enhancing, reducing noise, video trimming, adding clips, exporting common file types, advanced filtering and processing options
- Operating System: Windows, Mac, and Linux
Why We Chose It
Avidemux is a great choice for Windows users and beginner to advanced video editors. This free program includes a variety of features and tools, but some users do note that it’s outdated.
Pros & Cons
Pros
-
Free software
-
Offers a large range of file types and exporting options
-
Good for beginners, but still includes advanced options
Cons
-
Not supported on some newer operating systems
-
May seem outdated
Overview
Avidemux, available as a free download for Windows, Mac, and Linux, doesn’t try to be a full timeline-based video editor. Instead, it’s designed for making fairly simple changes and spitting out a modified file. You can import your source video and mark portions to cut out by selecting start and end frames. You can apply filters, with some aesthetic options like color effects and borders, as well as others that enhance the clip by sharpening the image or reducing noise. You can also add additional clips to the end of your current one, but that sort of work may be best for a full non-linear editor.
You might find Avidemux most useful when you don’t need to make any edits to the video at all; as part of its exporting step, Avidemux can encode video and audio to an impressive range of file types, with a robust amount of detailed options for the output. If you have a lot of clips to encode, you can queue them up to process one by one.

Only offers simple video editing features
-
Can be slow or have common operating issues
Overview
If you’re only looking to do quick, simple editing, free, open-source software is a smart place to turn. VidCutter excels at doing just what its name suggests: cutting video. The cross-platform program can import and export most common formats, such as AVI, MOV, MP4, MPEG, and others. Its interface (which has light and dark theme options) includes only a few elements: A preview area displays your imported media, and a single-track timeline at the bottom can show thumbnails if you toggle on the option. Mark start and end points on the timeline, and your selection will be added to the clip index on the side. You can add multiple clips this way and drag and drop to re-order them on the index. Saving the video will export your clips to a file in that order, and the new file will match the video format of the source.

- Operating System: Linux (Windows coming soon)

-
Real-time editing for live performances and events

Cons
-
May be difficult for beginners
Overview
LiVES (available as a free download for Linux, with a version for Windows in the works) is a non-linear video editor with bonus applications geared toward a specific type of user: the video jockey, or VJ. Alongside its standard editing functions, LiVES incorporates a number of real-time editing features that let a VJ mix and control video clips to go along with audio—all on the fly at a live performance. One part of the interface is the clip editor, where you can apply effects like fades, swirls, and colors to the media you’ve imported. You can then place and arrange the clips on the other part of the interface, the multi-track timeline, to render immediately or save for later.
Of course, being able to manipulate and control your clips quickly is crucial for live VJing, so LiVES lets you create a custom key map to call up effects or to transition between clips at the press of a button. You can also “scratch” backwards and forwards with the video, much like a DJ would do on a record. Even if you’re not planning to book a VJ gig anytime soon, the power to bring video and audio together in real time can open up possibilities for gatherings or live presentations.

- Operating System: Windows, Mac, and Linux

Free software
-
Great for post-production effects
-
Easy to move edited clips into another editing software to combine with longer video
Cons
-
Not made for cutting, trimming, or other standard video editing tools
-
Can be slow to load
Overview
While Natron isn’t a non-linear video editor meant for cutting and assembling video clips like the other products on this list, it does provide a powerful open-source way to take on another important aspect of video production. It’s a cross-platform visual effects (VFX) and motion graphics compositing program, used to put together different elements in post-production to create the “movie magic” within a particular shot or scene.
Effects in Natron are built using a series of “nodes.” You specify and tweak details of the effects on a node and apply them to a video clip, connecting and stacking multiple layers and branches of nodes as needed. This allows for functions like moving and resizing 2D/3D elements, chroma keying to replace backgrounds, and motion tracking to follow points on a video. Natron also supports a wide range of open-source and commercial VFX plugins to add more tools based on your needs. Once your shot is finished, you can switch over to another video editing or sequencing software (like any of the open-source ones in this article) to place it into a longer full video with audio and other scenes.

VSDC Video Editor (Free)
If you are looking for a minimal video editor, with support for non-linear video editing, VSDC Video Editor can be the best free video editing software for windows 7. The software is lightweight, free, and you can edit up to full HD videos, with this software. You can seamlessly work with photos, videos, and music, add them to timeline easily with the VSDC Video Editor.
Just like every coin has a tail, there are some cons, with the VSDC free video editor. The software is an old one, the output from the video editor will be clipped to 30 frames per second. Thus, if you do not want more than 30 frames per second, go for the VSDC Video Editor. The software can’t take maximum advantage of hardware acceleration, which is another problem. VideoLAN Movie Creator (Open Source)
The VideoLAN Movie Creator is one of the best video editing tool, which you can use, in order to give the finishing touch to all your videos. I will not recommend VideoLAN Movie Creator, as a one-stop video editing tool, as it is not that powerful. But if you want to do some basic video editing, work with multiple videos and audio elements in a timeline, I will recommend, VideoLAN Movie Creator, and it will fulfill your needs.
VideoLAN Movie Creator offers a clean user interface, where importing media files is quite easy, and come with a preview pane, to ensure, you are working in the way you want. But, if you want to play around with the software, I will recommend you not to do that, as the software might become unstable in such cases. VideoLAN Movie Creator is one of the best open source video editing windows 10, which is also supported on other platforms like Linux, Mac, etc.

Unfortunately, Flowblade is available only for Linux, and thus, sorry, Windows and Mac users. If you are looking for an alternative to OpenShot video editor for Ubuntu, give Flowblade a try.
Windows Movie Maker (Free / Paid)
For the majority of the Windows users out there, Windows Movie Maker is the best video editing software for YouTube entrepreneurs and other video enthusiasts. Even if you are a professional video editor, but want to do some basic tasks with your video, you can use Windows Movie Maker, and you will surely not the complaint about it.

For users, who are comfortable to do almost all the tasks on their browsers, Movie Maker Online is the best free video editor online. The user interface is not that familiar with most other online video editing software, but using the software for some time will make you familiar with it.
The only thing, I missed in the Movie Maker Online software, is the option to import from cloud storage. It should be present in all kinds of video editor online, and the same is available on the premium competitors of Movie Maker Online, which are available. Not everything works according to our needs though. But, Movie Maker Online can be the best tool, if you have a large bandwidth to work with videos online, and the option to import videos from cloud storage was available. The website being completely free to use, you can find ads, which is not a big deal to cope with. Just create an online account with Movie Maker Online, and get started.
I tried to include almost all types of video editing software for all kinds of user out there. If you are having a different requirement, or want more from them, you can always keep more than one video editing software, as come on! If you have plenty of clips to encode, you may queue them for mass processing. As part of export, Avidemux is capable of encoding video and audio into an impressive range of file types with many detailed options, as well as a vast array of codecs.
8. LiVES
For VJing and real-time editing
- Control via MIDI, keyboard and joystick
- Support for multiple tracks and plug-ins
- VJ keyboard control
- Compatibility with projectM and the LADSPA audio
- Not the easiest installation
- Windows support in development
Verdict: LiVES is a non-linear video editor free with bonus applications aimed at a particular type of user: video jockey or VJ. Along with standard video editing features, LiVES boasts a number of real-time options that let users mix and control video clips to combine them with sound alongside live performance, create custom maps for calling effects or switching between clips at the touch of a button.
One part of the interface is the clip editor that enables users to apply effects, such as fade, swirl, and color, to imported media. Then it is possible to place the clips on a multi-track timeline for immediate rendering or save them for later.
9. VidCutter
- Key frame viewer
- Ability to cut, split and add different clips

Avoiding a large number of additional capabilities that can slow down and complicate the process, it guarantees speedier video editing. Besides, this makes Flowblade more stable and reduced crashes.
The modern interface of Flowblade is intuitive with timeline tool buttons placed in a row. This slightly stripped-down panel offers enough tools for moving and cropping. Although its «insert edit» model with the automatic movement of clips to the left may take some getting used to.
11. Natron
- Robust tracker
- Key VFX tools
- Shadertoy and G’mic tools
- Compatible with OpenFX plugins
- Not a non-linear video editor
Verdict: If you are a fan of VFX and motion graphics, Natron will be a decent alternative to free VFX software, although it isn’t a non-linear video editor for cutting and assembling video clips.
It offers an efficient way to handle a significant aspect of video production: creating visual effects (VFX) and moving graphics used to combine various elements in order to produce movie effects in a specific frame or scene.
Effects are built on a series of “nodes”. Users specify and configure the effects’ details on the node and apply them, connecting and stacking multiple layers and node branches as needed.
Moreover, this free video editing software for PC lets users take advantage of the options of moving and resizing 2D/3D elements, a color key to replace the background, and tracking movement as points in the video.

However, that list contained some non-open source software as well, which gave us an idea to make a separate article featuring only open source video editors.

Kdenlive Video Editor
The title is an acronym for KDE Non-Linear Video Editor.
Currently, it works with the GNU/Linux platform but also on MacOS and BSD, and they are working on porting it to Windows too.
As the name suggests, this editor is a non-linear editor, which means that it is more powerful than a beginners’ linear editor. This does not mean that only specialists can use it, however, as with a bit of practice it can be used for most projects.
Kdenlive integrates many different plugin effects both for video and audio editing, a titling tool, a DVD authoring solution etc. This makes it a full package for making videos.
Its features include:
- Editing videos with multiple tracks/layers
- Supports almost every video and audio format
- An interface that is highly configurable so you can set up your workspace the way you want it
- Ability to create high-quality 2D titles and subtitles
- A host of many different effects and transitions
- Check your footage for balance with video and audio scopes
- Many resources available online for it
- A bunch of light and dark interface themes to choose from
- Automatic backup of your projects
- Can keep footage low-res while editing, then render it at high resolution
- You can pre-render certain parts of your timeline to get smooth playback
- Ability to keyframe the effects
This list of features (and for free) is more than enough for anyone just getting into video editing. It is unlikely that Kdenlive Video Editor will disappoint you.
Check out Kdenlive.
#3 LightWorks Video Editor
The makers of Lightworks published it for free because they wanted to give everyone access to video editing software that could perform on a professional level.
It is definitely more than just a simple tool for arranging clips and applying effects.
This is a powerful and complicated video editor, having been used for movies such as The King’s Speech and Road to Perdition. Keeping that in mind, it is easy to conclude that it takes some learning to get good at using it.
Once you do master it, however, it will be a professional-grade video editor right at your fingertips for free.
You do not even need super powerful hardware to run it.
The free license has basically everything you will need for doing some quality video editing, but you can also get the pro version to get extra features such as exporting in formats other than MPEG, publishing directly to YouTube and any other social media routes, as well as exporting 3D videos.
On its list of features you will find:
- A simple and easy-to-use interface
- Access to quality royalty-free video and audio
- A timeline that is easy to edit
- Ability to use lo-res proxy workflows if you are working with 4K videos
- Ready to use audio and video effects in real time
- For the Pro version, ability to export to YouTube or Vimeo
So there you go, an almost premium-quality video editor for free.
Check out LightWorks
Shotcut Video Editor
Similar to Lightworks, this is another video editor that feels professional even though you can get it for free.
It takes some work to master if you really want to harness the amazing capabilities that it offers, but once you do your results should be amazing.
Because it started as a Linux application, the interface can be a bit strange at times, so keep that in mind. This only serves to make the already steep learning curve steeper but should be nothing impossibly difficult.
That said, you can achieve results that are pretty decent just by applying the ready-made filters the software comes with.
However, if you really want to experience all that Shortcut has to offer, then we recommend that you take the time to learn it and use it to its full potential.
Its features include:
- Wide format support which includes 4K, FFmpeg, ProRes etc.
- An impressive array of audio editing tools
- Video effects which by themselves can make your videos seem professional
- Editing features which make the editing process smooth and painless
- Flexible UI and ability to be viewed on multiple displays
- Available on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS
- The software is codec independent
- Supports a wide variety of hardware
Shotcut video editor is a great option for someone who needs a quality video editor for free but is also willing to invest a bit of time in learning how to use it
Pitivi Video Editor
Coming up we have a video editor which is perhaps the least popular on this list.
The reason for this is that it is relatively new and has not had the chance to break out on the market.
The main driving force behind this one is its very intuitive and friendly user interface. Along with being aesthetically pleasing, it is also impressively functional.
This makes this video editor a pleasure to work in.
One great advantage to this video editor is the fact that it is still in development, so its creators are constantly their users for input on how to make the editor better.
Its list of features includes:
- A timeline that is independent of framerate
- A flexible interface that helps you get the job done with things like real-time trimming previews
- Accepts quite a wide variety of formats
- Available in many languages
- Naturally integrates into the Linux desktop
- Accurately and beautifully represents audio in waveforms
One thing to note with the Pitivi Video Editor is that it is currently only available for Linux.
So if you are a Linux user, you are quite lucky to have access to such an amazing piece of open source software!
Check out Pitivi
Blender
Although Blender is primarily a tool for making 3D art renders, the software also features a built-in video editor which is no slouch.
It has a very professional-looking interface so that it feels premium while you are working in it. The software also features a variety of keyboard shortcuts which make working in it enjoyable, quick, and efficient.
That said, Blender’s video editor will not allow you to do more advanced things that other free video editors might, but it is a more than satisfying package for someone looking for the essential tools and interface.
Its features include:
- A variety of preview modes including live preview, luma waveform, chroma vectorscope, and histogram
- Ability to work with audio in many ways such as mixing, scrubbing, and waveform visualization
- It has 32 slots that you add video, audio, images, scenes, masks, and effects to
- Standard video-editing features such as speed control, keyframes, filters, and visual effects etc.
As the last entry in this list, Blender is awkward only because it is not completely dedicated to video editing.
Disregarding that, it is a great open source video editor.

Other Free Video Editors (Not Open Source)
DaVinci Resolve Video Editor
DaVinci Resolve is a premium piece of video editing software, but you can get a free version of it that is substantially packed with features—enough that you will not feel like you are missing any.
Resolve’s interface is intuitive and easy to use, its mastering options rich, exporting simple and flexible.
Across the board, it is a professional-level video editing suite, with a multi-track timeline for arranging footage and audio, tons of effects, and content-sensitive trimming.
The software has HDR support and one of its standout features is color correction. It allows you to adjust the colors of either the whole video or just one part of it.
Of course, as with any free version, some things are left out, including support for export resolutions up to 3,840 x 2,160. But these features are only really necessary for super advanced video editing, and the free version should be more than satisfactory for trimming videos and preparing them for YouTube.
Some of the features include:
- A very advanced array of color correction tools
- An audio editing interface which could bring some DAWs to shame
- Incredible 2D and 3D effects
- A simple and easy way to organize media
This is only a very rudimentary list of features, as the software itself has so many that we cannot fit even a good part of them here.
What you need to know is that DaVinci Resolve is definitely one of, if not the best free video editors around.
Check out DaVinci Resolve
Hitfilm Express Video Editor
Among the video editors that provide pro-level features for free, Hitfilm Express is another piece of software which delivers quite nicely.
The free version is quite loaded with features, including amazing video and audio filters, composition options, and even chroma keying for green screen effects.
Of course, as with all of these free versions, you can pay for further features including color correction, a variety of filters, screen masking, and exposure adjustment.
Be warned, however, that Hitfilm Express boasts quite the array of features, which comes at a price. That price is performance.
It takes quite a beefy machine to run Hitfilm Express to its true potential, so make sure to check the system requirements before installing.
In its impressive list of features, you will find:
- A revolutionary workflow which includes combined timelines, personalization options, intelligent search, and much more
- No limit to the number of tracks/layers you can have
- A host of different animation tools
- Has an available particle simulator add-on
- Effortlessly add fire and lightning, muzzle flashes, and lens flare effects
- Specialized effects
- Support for 3D models
And much, much more.
Even the free software version comes packed with features.
Check it Hitfilm
VSDC Video Editor
The VSDC Video Editor is one of those that is just brimming with pre-made filters and effects that you can use on your raw footage.
These can be added manually or with the provided wizard if you are not that interested in customization.
Just like Kdenlive, VSDC is a non-linear video editor, which makes it more complicated to use than simple linear video editors, but the results it yields are often of higher quality.
If you can bear VSDC’s slightly peculiar user interface then it is possible to make professional-quality videos with it.
The new version, especially, is faster and provides lots of new effects which will guarantee a premium-feeling finish.
On top of the standard features it boasts an array of extra ones:
- Change the way your videos blend colors and how those colors are rendered (similar to Instagram filters)
- Masking allows you to apply effects only to certain areas of the video
- Finished videos are easy to export to YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook etc.
- Position objects on the screen with buttery-smooth subpixel accuracy
- Supports all popular formats including HD and 4K
- Create videos for specific devices (phones, tablets)
- Create all different kinds of charts and diagrams
This video editor has many other features such as video stabilization, DVD burning, and many more!

Conclusion
