Windows Phone Internals 2.2 has been announced and it brings bootloader unlocking capabilities to all Windows 8 and 10 Mobile Lumia smartphones.
Those of you who are familiar with Windows Mobile phones may be aware of the Windows Phone Internals application. It allowed for the Android equivalent of unlocking the bootloader and rooting a Windows Mobile device as it allows for the ability to install a custom software on Windows Mobile phones. 2 years after the last update, a new update for the tool has been announced. Windows Phone Internals 2.2 is the latest version and can unlock the bootloader of all Windows 8 or Windows 10 Lumia smartphones.
Bypassing SecureBoot, the application allows users to upgrade their devices to an unofficial version of Windows 10 (as not many devices even received an official upgrade) and make many modifications and hacks to the operating system on the device. It may be possible for some devices to gain access to the Project Astoria system which allows for some Android apps to be run on Windows Mobile, or even for devices to flash ported versions of Android. This is all provided developers pick up support for any devices which become unlocked as a result of this, however. We’ll see the update to Windows Phone Internals released in a few days time.
This comes at a time where Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 is now being placed into maintenance mode on Windows Mobile devices, meaning no more new features will be developed, due to the somewhat dying nature of the platform. Only security fixes and stability fixes will be made. Relatively few users used the platform as a daily driver, and even fewer developed applications for the platform, which is why it had such little public attraction.
It’s possible to see a revival of the platform in a few years time, but for now, it’s officially dead and likely won’t be coming back. That doesn’t mean a group of dedicated and passionate developers can’t keep existing Windows Mobile devices usable for as long as possible, though. If you’re interested in unlocking the bootloader of your Windows 8 or Windows 10 Lumia device, check out the link to the announcement on our forums down below.

Windows Phone Internals
Windows Phone Internals (WPinternals or WPI for short) is a tool designed to unlock the bootloader and/or secure boot of select Lumia devices made by Nokia and Microsoft.
Thanks to specifically crafted exploits/techniques the tool is able to disable Bootloader Security/SecureBoot on select Lumia models.
After unlocking your bootloader you will be able to notably perform the following actions:
- Boot other Operating Systems
- Enable Root Access (on select OS versions)
- Flash Custom ROMs
- Backup your current Windows Phone ROM
- Access your phone internal storage over USB
Root Access
Root Access is a set of patches/hacks disabling security inside Windows Phone at its root. Kernel Security, Permission checks, application container security, deployment capability security and much gets disabled as part of enabling root access.
How to get started?
The tool contains all the documentation you need to know more about the tool, we invite you to read the getting started section of the tool to know more.
Where do I download the tool?
Here: https://github.com/ReneLergner/WPinternals/releases/latest
But there were also some people having trouble unlocking their phones. I collected logs and asked quite a few people to do tests for me. The result is version 2.4. There are no new features in this version. There are only fixes. Here’s the changelog:
FIX: Disabling Root Access could result in a BSOD on some phones.
FIX: Unlocking the bootloader on some Lumia 950’s and 950 XL’s could result in a BSOD on the phone. Windows Phone internals detected this and reverted the changes. This version will prevent this situation and should unlock all Lumia 950’s and 950 XL’s correctly now.
FIX: Sometimes the driver for mass storage mode fails to start properly on PC. This could stall the unlock process of Windows Phone Internals. This version properly detects the failing driver, reverts the changes and informs the user. The user can retry to unlock the phone after the phone booted properly again.
FIX: The commannd-line interface of WPinternals.exe is working properly now.
FIX: The «Restore bootloader» function can now properly restore the original bootloader, when the unlock process was interrupted for some reason.
FIX: While scanning for a flashing profile, Windows Phone Internals could end up interrupting the process due to an exception. The exception is handled properly and the process should finish correctly now.
FIX (experimental): Reset Protection Protection: The Reset Protection Response Data is backed up when the bootloader is unlocked. And it is restored when you restore the bootloader.
FIX: Regression bug: Restore Bootloader was not working properly anymore on Lumia x2x devices.
LIMITATION: After unlocking the bootloader, the iris scanner does not work anymore on Lumia 950 and Lumia 950 XL. This is a limitation of SecureBoot Unlock v2. SecureBoot Unlock v2 removes all policies and this also disables the iris scanner. Windows Hello does not work properly anymore. To fix the problem you can restore the bootloader.
LIMITATION: Due to the complexity of SecureBoot Hack v2, unlocking mounted ROM images is only possible for Lumia’s with bootloader Spec A. For Lumia’s with bootloader Spec B you can create Custom ROM’s with Root Access using the «Build and capture» technique, as described on the Getting started page. Many other improvements.
Windows Phone Internals
Lumia Windows.
Windows Phone Internals.
