Windows ultimate to windows professional downgrade

I was in a similar situation. I had «Windows 7 Home Prem OA HP» on a HP desktop I bought new and then upgraded the system to Ultimate with an Upgrade key. But now that I bought a refurb desktop with no OS (with a COA for «Windows Vista Business OEMAc») I needed to use that Ultimate license on the «new» refurb desktop. So my «downgrade ultimate to home premium» search brought me here, amongst other places.

I used the registry solution explained here, manually and without the use of a popular tool from a website called deviantart. I figured I was better off hacking the puter manually myself. I did however used it this way (notice upper & lower case matching the «Ultimate» entry format):

EditionID «Ultimate» changed to «HomePremium»
ProductName «Windows 7 Ultimate» changed to «Windows 7 HomePremium»

For reference, I also used the following posting on tomshardware (www.tomshardware.com/forum/13130-63-downgrading-win7-home-premium), specially the response by aquasystems.

Then, I needed to do the «in-place repair upgrade.» I tried using the windows 7 repair disk I had originally made with the HP desktop only to realize that it was not what I needed. What I needed was a Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installation disk. Since I was afraid to use the system recovery disks of the hp desktop (who knows, it might have worked but I did not want to risk a complete recovery), I downloaded an iso image from digitalriver. For that I followed the advice and links I found on a microsoft community post (://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-windows_install/can-i-downgrade-from-windows-7-ultimate-to-home/ca6cda9a-3c44-40aa-880f-45b12947a880). I burned the iso image to a dvd using imgburn.

To do the «in-place repair upgrade» I used the DVD I had made, pop it into the dvd drive and allowed autorun to start the process (you can navigate to the dvd and double click setup.exe if necessary). I then followed the process as presented by unawave (www.unawave.de/installation/downgrade-en.html?lang=EN) and here, although the german screen shot is just superfluous. This was a very good step by step site that helped me. I did not get a compatability report about the languages pack; only a small warning that the system needed rebooting before runing setup.exe (which I did before running setup.exe a second time). After the second time running setup.exe, then the rest of the process went as planned. When I was done, I was able to confirm that the windows version had been downgraded to Home Premium.

But, a brief warning about activation of the product key. Once I «downgraded» I needed to re-activate my Home Premium key (stuck on the side of the HP desktop). When I tried activating it, the system responded that it was invalid and that I could not activate it online and needed to do a phone activation process to get an confirmation id. I figured, I was already done with the deed and since I legally owned the license (aka product key) I had nothing to loose. The pop-up warning window asked me to call a toll free number and follow instructions. The call was answered by an automated system which asked me to enter on the phone a total of nine six-digit number groups which were displayed on the pop-up instructions. After this, the automated response indicated that my activation was valid and that I needed to enter eight six-digit number groups (A through H) it would give me to put in their corresponding spaces on the pop-up instructions window (see ://img.technospot.net/windows-7-activation-screen.png). The automated system allows for all the number groups to be repeated to verify they are entered correctly. I completed the phone verification process and there it was … the install was activated and fully functioning as it used to be. So, this was a successful «in-place repair upgrade» downgrade from Windows 7 Ultimate to Windows 7 Home Premium (HP original install).

My thanks go to everyone who contributed in this thread on this page. Also, my thanks go to the following websites and postings which also helped me to do this. Mind you, I used the advice in all of them as advice only and did not follow anyone’s instructions blindly or uniquely. Always do your homework before undertaking tinkering such as this … and of course, always backup backup backup

Например, вы можете купить Windows 7 Professional, а после приобрести лицензионный ключ для Полного издания и без переустановки ОС перейти на нее. Вы сохраните все установленные программы и настройки, но при этом получите дополнительный функционал. А можно ли сделать наоборот – понизить версию системы (даунгрейд)?

Возможно ли понижение редакции ОС?

Разработчиками операционной системы изначально предусмотрена возможность повышения редакции. Для этого можно воспользоваться установочным диском с ОС или встроенной службой Windows. Это распространенная практика. Однако изменить версию системы в обратную сторону, к сожалению, нельзя. Речь идет об официальных способах. В таких случаях техническая поддержка Microsoft рекомендует провести установку с нуля. Если у вас на ПК нет каких-либо очень важных данных и программ, или вы все сохранили на отдельный носитель и можете быстро восстановить, то чистая инсталляция для вас будет самым простым и доступным способом.

Нестандартное снижение версии Windows

Если же говорить о неофициальных способах, как изменить редакцию, то есть один вариант. Вам потребуются: диск с нужной версией ОС и ключ ее активации. При этом важно соблюсти одно из следующих условий:

• на диске установлен пакет SP1;
• ни на диске, ни в текущей ОС нет пакета SP1.

Если одно из условий соблюдено, то можно работать. Вам потребуется выполнить следующие действия, чтобы понизить Windows 7 Ultimate до Professional:

• запустите редактор реестра;
• перейдите в раздел «HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion»;
• поменяйте значение пункта «EditionID», в него необходимо вписать нужную вам редакцию ОС, в нашем случае – Professional;
• сохраните изменения;
• запустите установку системы с установочного диска;
• выберите в меню пункт «Обновление»;
• дождитесь завершения операции и перезапуска ПК.

Если все прошло верно, то вы получите необходимую версию ОС. Вот так можно провести downgrade Windows 7 Ultimate to Professional.

3. Высокие требования к ПК. Более старшие редакции могут требовать больше ресурсов от компьютера, что приводит к снижению производительности. Снижение версии может решить эту проблему.

You cannot downgrade to Windows 7 Pro without doing a complete re-installation, and you cannot use a Windows 7 Pro activation key to activate Windows 7 Ultimate. However, you should be able to use the activation key from an OEM copy of Windows Ultimate that you purchase.

If it doesn’t accept the Win7 Ultimate activation key when you enter it, you should be able to do a repair installation of Windows using the Ultimate OEM CD that you purchased and use that OEM CD’s activation key. It will activate Windoows 7 Ultimate using the OEM CD, but it should not remove any of your files or software.

You can downgrade Windows 7 Ultimate to Professional, or Home Premium.

A Windows 7 Ultimate Installation can normally not change into a minor version of «Windows 7 Home Premium» or «Professional». If you have installed a preview version of Windows 7 Ultimate (e.g. beta, release candidate build 7100 or RTM build 7600) and want to install a cheaper version Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional the installation is refused:

A re-boot after change of these registry keys is not necessary.

The version name to be entered must be identical to the version name on the installation DVD. See here the differences of an English and a German installation:

For downgrading do not boot from Windows 7 installation DVD.

Boot to Windows 7 and start «Setup.exe» from DVD; or after loading DVD the setup process starts automatically.

All data, documents, music and movie files, installed driver and programs, shortcuts, program and user settings are retained. Only in a few Windows 7 programs some settings are reset to the initial settings; e.g. in the «services». After the downgrade the Windows 7 installation, of course, must be re-activated.

Attention: In Windows 7 Ultimate Build 7100 (Release Candidate) the effort is greater. First the entire DVD content must be copied to a folder to the hard drive. Then open in subfolder «sources» the file «cversion.ini» and change the entry «MinClient=7233.0» to «MinClient=7077.0«. Then you can start the installation with «Setup.exe» (one folders hierarchy up). After the installation the entire folder can be deleted.

Can’t be done. When you install Windows 7, it installs THAT edition. You can’t go backwards. If you use a multi-disk with all the installations, it asks you during Setup, and tells you to make sure you chose the right one. You will need to reinstall Windows 7 Pro to get only the Pro features. If you already have OEM Ultimate, I’d say keep using it (unless it was pirated)

Windows ultimate to windows professional downgrade

Бывают ситуации, когда с установочного диска Windows7 22в1 установлена не та версия Windows, которая нам необходима. И хорошо, если это HomePremium или Professional, т.к. сделать update до Ultimate не составит особого труда. Достаточно просто изменить ключ продукта и Windows сама проделает все необходимые операции. Но что же делать, если нужно проделать так называемый Downgrade? Т.е. всё то же самое, но в обратном порядке. Получить из уже установленной Windows 7 Ultimate нужную нам Professional или HomePremium.

Итак, для успешного так называемого Downgrade во первых необходимо изменить 2 ключа в реестре на уже установленной Windows 7 Ultimate. Это ветка HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersion

В нашей установленной Windows 7 Ultimate эта ветка выглядит следующим образом:

Для того, чтобы нам получить Windows 7 HomePremium нужно изменить EditionID на HOMEPREMIUM и ProductName на Windows 7 HOMEPREMIUM:

После этого нам необходимо начать обновление операционной системы с установочного диска. Именно обновление, а не новую установку.

Для Downgrade до HomePremium выбираем из предложенных вариантов именно HomePremium:

Ну а если мы занимаемся Downgrade до Professional, то именно её и выбираем из списка предложенных вариантов:

В процессе обновления длительное время будет совершатся проверка совместимости компонентов и програмного обеспечения, после чего начнётся само обновление. Длительность этого процесса зависит от количества установленного ПО в системе.

После подобного процесса становятся недоступными функции Ultimate, доступные только ей и при старте Windows мы видим уже нашу «пониженную» HomePremium или Professional:

If you have ever tried to downgrade from a higher edition of Windows 7 to a lower edition, you probably know that reinstalling the Windows 7 with the desired edition is the only way to do it. You get only Upgrade option during the installation process.

Windows 7 users who would like to downgrade from Ultimate or Enterprise edition to Professional or Home Premium edition can use an excellent portable application called Windows 7 Downgrader that helps you downgrade from a higher edition to lower edition easily.

The Downgrader does the job by changing some registry values. Of course, you will need to go through some installation procedure to make it happen. The advantage of using this tool and method is that you will not loose your data or installed programs.

Procedure:

1. Download the Windows 7 Downgrader tool and run with admin privilege. Click the edition that you want to downgrade to and close the application.

2. Put the Windows 7 installation DVD into the drive and run the setup (.exe) file (don’t boot using the DVD). During installation, select the edition that you want to install (downgrade) and then select Upgrade (it’s actually downgrade option) option.

3. Follow the usual Windows 7 installation procedure to complete the downgrade process.

I’ve tried to downgrade from Enterprise edition to professional using this procedure but facing same problems as Larry.

It seems that SP1 conflict with this hack. So you need to uninstall SP1 first. But in my case, I installed from a DVD of Windows-7 that already included SP1, so I cannot uninstall SP1. I will have to bite the bullet and reinstall everything.

Дело не в легальности, такая ситуация в принципе легко может возникнуть у партнера который использует Ultimate для демонстрации в торговом зале в полном соответствии соглашением MAPS, а покупатель захочет приобрести компьютер с ОЕМ-версией более низкой редакции.

Там не просто подмена информации в реестре. Эта подмена используется для того, чтобы обмануть установщик и заставить его обновить Алтиму более низкой версией. Поэтому я и сказал, что получится гибрид. Ну а какие сюрпризы он сможет приподнести, можно только гадать.

Штатными средствами типа WAU понизить редакцию не получится, но есть обходной путь.

Чтобы не понижать редакцию предлагаю изменить изданию установленной системы на ту, которую Вы хотиту установить.

Затускаем установочный диск.

В пункте, где предлагается «Обновление» или «Полная установка» выбираем первый пункт (обновление).

Ожидаем окончание установки, выставляем необходимые настройки.

Издание системы изменено, все настройки и приложения остались нетронутыми.

Если, вдруг, что-то пошло не так всегда можно восстановить систему из созданой в первом пункте точки восстановления.

How to Downgrade Windows 7 Ultimate to Professional Without Formatting

Update: The latest Windows 11 is here, but if you are still using Windows 7 and want to change the version in the year 2022 or later, keep reading the below steps. Some users mentioned that the modifying registry trick does not work anymore. Hence, I’m including a downgrade tool that may do the job. Anyhow, I’m not able to verify both steps now since Windows 7 is out of support and it is not recommended to use anymore.

I installed/downgraded Windows 7 Ultimate to the Professional version without formatting or reinstalling OS on one of the computers. Even though both are the same Windows 7 family, it is not easy to switch the versions especially backwards. The following method is to fake the Windows OS and trick that we have the Professional version installed, then do an upgrade. The Ultimate version is the higher version of Windows 7 and it can’t be downgraded to lower versions officially without formatting and doing a fresh installation. Anyhow, I found a trick to downgrade Windows 7 ultimate to Professional easily without the new installation.

Steps to Downgrade Windows 7 Ultimate to Professional

Before starting the installation, do change two keys in Registry. In my case, I had to change the key to ‘ Windows 7 Professional ’. Make sure you are typing the exact OS version which is written on your installation DVD.

After you changed the registry key, insert the Windows 7 Professional CD/DVD and start the upgrade. It is required to enable the option to check the Windows update while doing the installation. So, the process will check the Windows update catalogue online and do the upgrade related to Windows 7 Professional. If the current state of Windows 7 is the latest build and update, then this method may fail because it will not find any updates from the Microsoft catalogue website.

Make sure you have enough space in ‘System Partition’ (usually C drive). Allocate enough time since this will copy your personal data first, downgrade the OS and then copy back your data. If the computer data is so critical, I advise taking a backup of your important data.

I suggest cleaning up (move to a different location) your personal data (such as Desktop, My Documents..etc) before starting the downgrade to save time.
