sudo apt-add-repository --remove 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ xenial main'
sudo apt-add-repository --remove 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main'
sudo apt-add-repository --remove 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ artful main'

sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main'
sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable

(xfce, KDE, cinnamon, mate) 4.

WWolf,

[SOLVED] The Wine conundrum
Wine has been giving me a headache from the very start a few months ago.
When following the official installation instructions, I was hitting the missing dependencies wall and was only able to complete the install thanks to these guidelines. From then on I was quite mindlessly installing updates every time they popped up in Update Manager.
Yesterday I ran into serious trouble, partially because of that.
The reason why I was trying to remove Wine completely and install it from scratch was because after updating to wine-devel-i386 (5.0~rc4~bionic) I could no longer run games on Lutris (but the Wine desktop was loading). And messing around with the PPAs didn’t help — I could not get past the ‘missing dependencies’ / ‘you have held broken packages’ wall this time. Fortunately, the snapshot I restored earlier today was from before the Wine update and my games are working.
But.
Every time I start a game Lutris is yelling: «Wine is not installed on your system».
So I’m checking:
1.
which wine
+ echo $?
yields 1
So Wine is not installed, right?
2.
wine --version
yields
Command 'wine' not found, but can be installed with:
sudo apt install wine-development
sudo apt install wine-stable
So Wine is not installed, right?
3.
dpkg -l "*wine*" | grep ii
yields
ii wine-devel-amd64 5.0~rc4~bionic amd64 WINE Is Not An Emulator - runs MS Windows programs
ii wine-devel-i386:i386 5.0~rc3~bionic i386 WINE Is Not An Emulator - runs MS Windows programs
So is it, or is it not installed?
And I can play the bloody games and I can see the bloody Wine desktop, so it bloody must be installed.
I don’t know why I’m on devel and not stable. The history of updates shows only devel, so I must have initially chosen this version. Can the errors be caused by the facts that these latest updates are RCs?
Or should I reinstall Lutris, similarly to the case with POL here?
What am I missing?

Hello, rodia77.
Tries 1+2 only show that the executable file wine
cannot be found following the search path $PATH
, no more, no less.
This does not prove that Wine has not been installed. Invalid conclusion.
Try 3 gives the correct result:
Code: Select all
dpkg -l "*wine*" | grep ii
ii wine-devel-amd64 5.0~rc4~bionic amd64 WINE Is Not An Emulator - runs MS Windows programs
ii wine-devel-i386:i386 5.0~rc3~bionic i386 WINE Is Not An Emulator - runs MS Windows programs
The command dpkg
reveals what might be an inconsistent state:
You have got the 64-bit Wine 5.0 release candidate 4, but 32-bit version Wine 5.0 release candidate 3.
No idea when, why and how you installed it.
On my systems, I have always only used and still use the default version, which Linux Mint «wine-installer» will give me.

Karl

If you’re using Mint 19.x, those instructions are wrong.
dpkg -l "*wine*" | grep ii
yields
ii wine-devel-amd64 5.0~rc4~bionic amd64 WINE Is Not An Emulator - runs MS Windows programs
ii wine-devel-i386:i386 5.0~rc3~bionic i386 WINE Is Not An Emulator - runs MS Windows programs
So is it, or is it not installed?
It’s partially installed; it should look more like this:
Code: Select all
$ dpkg -l "*wine*" | grep ii
ii wine-stable 4.0.3~bionic amd64
ii wine-stable-amd64 4.0.3~bionic amd64
ii wine-stable-i386:i386 4.0.3~bionic i386
ii winehq-stable 4.0.3~bionic amd64
Are you using wine ‘development’ for some reason? It’s more likely to cause problems that the more debugged versions.
If you’re using Mint 19.x and don’t need development version, undo everything you did (remove *wine* packages and the extra repos/ppas) and follow the instructions on the Mint ‘release notes’ page for your distro ( = install ‘wine-installer’).

Well, only one person to blame for that, and you can hardly complain about an unstable Wine when you expressly did not install the stable version…
As Linux Mint’s release notes state, the recommended way to install Wine 4 (stable) is via the official repositories by running
(or via Software Manager) and not by adding a third-party repository to install a Wine 5 development version.

Wine is actually rubbish (most programs fail) and, while I’ve never used Lutris, I’m a bit suspicious when they say they have a Linux platform/version and then it requires Wine.

Hardly. Wine works well, never had trouble with it, and even Steam integrates it as part of their Proton compatibility layer to allow you to run Windows games on Linux. These days I’m only using Proton instead of a stand-alone Wine.

I probably wouldn’t use linux if not for wine, which runs foobar, irfanview, photoshop, audition, mp3tag, convxtodvd, foxit-pdf, photomatrix, avidemux(+old version) quite nicely for me.

Thanks for the clarification, Karl.
I can’t remember the reason why I chose devel.
wine-installer isn’t working for me:
Code: Select all
apt install wine-installer
[sudo] password for xxxx:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies.
wine-installer : Depends: winehq-stable but it is not going to be installed or
winehq-devel but it is not installable or
winehq-staging but it is not installable
Depends: libsdl2-2.0-0:i386
E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.
This starts the trouble with the dependencies I mentioned and this is the reason why I had to look for a workaround like the one I mentioned.
In Software Manager ‘wine-installer’ is listed as ‘Not available’ — I now installed wine-stable-amd64, but Lutris is still yelling about no Wine and my games won’t run anymore. (I can roll back to a recent snapshot at any time, so it’s not a problem).

I suspect my choice of devel rather than stable had something to do with it, too — I would normally always go for stable, so I either couldn’t make something work or I explicitly read somewhere that it’s ‘better’ to go for devel, whatever that could mean.

There are no missing dependencies for the version distributed with Linux Mint, your article does not apply to Mint’s wine-installer package and wine version in the slightest.

Irrelevant, you’ve got third party wine repositories added and third-party wine packages added, so of course your install is a mess. A «clean» Linux Mint install does not have those problems. So remove those foreign repositories and packages first.

I gather that means you’re using 19.x. Why = it doesn’t mention ‘wine-installer’.
(FWIW, wine-installer is not listed in my dpkg output because that’s from ubuntu; I installed wine(-stable) with wine-installer on Mint 19.3 without problems)
Also, why would I need anything ‘i386’ if my machine is AMD-based?
Wine runs 32 bit programs. They’re much preferred, actually.

I ran that install after removing the two packages I listed earlier and after disabling (not removing) the ‘foreign’ repos.

I gather that means you’re using 19.x. Why = it doesn’t mention ‘wine-installer’.
(FWIW, wine-installer is not listed in my dpkg output because that’s from ubuntu; I installed wine(-stable) with wine-installer on Mint 19.3 without problems)
We’re running circles. The very reason why I had to resort to those ‘non-kosher’ guidelines was not being able to install Wine either from Software Manager or through apt install wine-installer
in the first place. I checked today, just like I did the other day, that removing what I currently have on my machine leads me to square one. In other words, I COULD NOT install Wine the Mint-recommended way even before I had this ‘mess’ on my machine.

Irrelevant, you’ve got third party wine repositories added and third-party wine packages added, so of course your install is a mess. A «clean» Linux Mint install does not have those problems. So remove those foreign repositories and packages first.I ran that install after removing the two packages I listed earlier and after disabling (not removing) the ‘foreign’ repos.
Then it’s other packages creating the conflicts, likely from a third-party source as well. For the full story, add -o "Debug::pkgProblemResolver=1"
to your command line.

Tried again.
Purged wine-devel-amd64 and wine-devel-i386.
Removed the additional repository and key.
Tried to purge add-achitecture-32bit, but it couldn’t be found.
‘Fixed broken packages’ in Synaptic.

Ok, so there is your problem, you’ve got a libpulse0 version installed that is not available from any of your configured repositories. In this case it’s not even your fault, it seems Ubuntu withdrew that version a month ago almost immediately due to packaging bugs and hasn’t replaced it yet. Very bad practice really, that shouldn’t ever happen.
Try this:
Code: Select all
apt install libpulse0=1:11.1-1ubuntu7.4
If that doesn’t go through or wants to remove anything, in case of doubt post the output before doing anything else, otherwise you should be able to
afterwards.

@gm10: Sir, you nailed it. Thanks a lot for leading me through it and I recognise it’s not the first time you helped me out. I appreciate everyone else’s input as well.
Code: Select all
~$ dpkg -l "*wine*" | grep ii
ii wine-desktop-files 4.0.5 all Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer
ii wine-installer 4.0.5 all Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer
ii wine-stable 4.0~bionic amd64 WINE Is Not An Emulator - runs MS Windows programs
ii wine-stable-amd64 4.0~bionic amd64 WINE Is Not An Emulator - runs MS Windows programs
ii wine-stable-i386:i386 4.0~bionic i386 WINE Is Not An Emulator - runs MS Windows programs
ii winehq-stable 4.0~bionic amd64 WINE Is Not An Emulator - runs MS Windows programs
And most importantly, Lutris isn’t yelling and my games run no probs.
Even though I started this topic as a general inquiry rather than a request for solution, I’m tagging it as solved, as the problem was diagnosed on the way and subsequently solved.

Wine > 4.2 and Ubuntu 18.04 (Bionic)
I notice some recent commits have added FAudio. This is great news imo.
However, there is a small problem with Ubuntu 18.04 (and 18.10) that building FAudio from GIT requires SDL2 >=2.0.9. Ubuntu 18.04/18.10 only comes with 2.0.8.
So, to try help out, i did a backport of the Disco SDL2 version (libsdl2-2.0-0_2.0.9+dfsg1-1ubuntu1 + libsdl2-dev_2.0.9+dfsg1-1ubuntu1) package for Bionic, and made a package for FAudio 19.03 (libfaudio + libfaudio-dev).
Those with Ubuntu 18.04 can grab it by:
Code: Select all
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:cybermax-dexter/sdl2-backport
sudo apt-get update
To install SDL2 2.0.9 + sdl2-dev :
Code: Select all
sudo apt install libsdl2-2.0-0 libsdl2-2.0-0:i386 libsdl2-dev
If you want FAudio:
Code: Select all
sudo apt install libfaudio libfaudio:i386 libfaudio-dev
Let me know if this does not work. I will probably add FAudio for Cosmic and Disco aswell if there is interest in that. Atleast until it gets added in some official repo’s.

FYI, the WineHQ packages can only be built with Faudio support for distros that provide the Faudio development headers in their standard or update repositories. At present, this is none of them.

vyo1993 wrote:Thank you! Can you, please, also make cosmic libfaudio? Thanks?
Also, where can I get sources for now? Can’t find them anywhere…
Added SDL2-2.0.9 + libfaudio for Cosmic.
FAudio git is: https://github.com/FNA-XNA/FAudio
I see wine-staging-4.3 reverts libfaudio patches with the reason «Fixes: Revert FAduio patches to package isssue with faudio not being availabe for most distro’s.»
ref: https://github.com/wine-staging/wine-st … definition
So if you want to build wine-staging-4.3 WITH the new faudio, you have to use:
Code: Select all
patchinstall.sh DESTDIR="wine-4.3/" --all -W xaudio2-revert -W xaudio2_CommitChanges -W xaudio2_7-WMA_support -W xaudio2_7-CreateFX-FXEcho
That ofc requires the usage of libfaudio library, and to build libfaudio without errors, you need SDL2-2.0.9.
Probably will pop up for various «souce-distro’s» like Arch and Gentoo fast if its not already there with some pkg-build

Running Ubuntu 18.04.2 LTS. Followed your instructions, added your ppa because I was getting an error when trying to upgrade from wine-devel from 4.4~bionic to 4.5~bionic. The output was that libfaudio0:amd64 is required. So, following your examples ran

Apologies for the noise. I did some more Googling after I wrote the above and found that by running sudo dpkg -i —force-overwrite and then sudo apt -f install I was able to get everything installed. Odd though that I’ve never run across this issue in previous upgrades of wine-devel packages though.
Linux.
История Wine
(Alexandre Julliard).
Название
Название Wine (W.I.N.E) является рекурсивным акронимом фразы «Wine Is Not an Emulator» — «Вайн это не эмулятор.»
Wine
Wine
Wine
wine program.exe
Linux.
wine setup.exe
Wine
Wine: Wine Application Database (AppDB) — https://appdb.winehq.org.
- Adobe Animate
- Adobe Photoshop
- Microsoft Office
- Total Commander
- Lingvo
- Final Fantasy XI Online
- StarCraft
- Warcraft III
- World of Warcraft
- Counter-Strike: Source
- EVE Online
- Half-Life 2
- Magic: The Gathering Online
- The Sims 3
WINEPREFIX="/home/pingvinus/.wine2/" winecfg
WINEPREFIX="/home/pingvinus/.wine2/" wine /путь/до/файла/setup.exe
Winetricks.

sudo apt install wine-stable
sudo apt install winetricks
sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
wget -nc https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key
sudo apt-key add winehq.key
# Ubuntu 21.04
sudo add-apt-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ hirsute main'
# Ubuntu 20.10
sudo add-apt-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ groovy main'
# Ubuntu 20.04 Linux Mint 20.x
sudo add-apt-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ focal main'
# Ubuntu 18.10:
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ cosmic main'
# Ubuntu 18.04 и Linux Mint 19.x:
sudo apt-add-repository 'deb https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main'
sudo apt update
sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-stable
sudo apt install --install-recommends winehq-devel
Winetricks:
sudo apt install winetricks
Ubuntu (LinuxMint)
sudo apt install wine-stable
ArchLinux (Manjaro)
sudo pacman -S wine
Fedora
sudo dnf install wine
Установка в openSuse
sudo zypper install wine
Gentoo
sudo emerge -a virtual/wine

(Wine Is Not an Emulator — «Wine это не эмулятор»).

Isn’t the difference between Windows apps and Linux apps just libraries asked by applications running? (see previous question) How is possible then to make Windows applications running on a Linux system by software which is «not an emulator»!

From here (archived version, because that Wiki page is currently missing)
Wine’s not that kind of emulator
When users think of emulators, they
think of programs like Dosbox or
zsnes. These applications run as
virtual machines and are slow, having
to emulate each processor instruction.
Wine does not do any CPU emulation —
hence the name «Wine Is Not an
Emulator.»Some people argue that since Wine
introduces an extra layer above the
system a Windows application will run
slowly. While technically true, Wine
is no different from any other
software library in this regard; even
newer versions of Windows must load
extra resources to support older
applications.Importantly, the combination of Wine
and Unix can sometimes be faster than
Windows itself. This is especially
true when the system has good drivers
and the application isn’t exposing any

An emulator acts completely like something else. These applications normally contain everything the original application or platform contains.
Wine however acts as a translator, by implementing only the required features of Windows and also translating these into instructions which can be understood by X-Windows.
A more practical example would be a virtual machine. When running Windows on Linux using a virtual machine, the virtual machine emulates Windows, as the complete OS is loaded and there is no direct interaction with the host.
However Wine talks to X-Windows for certain instructions directly when and if required, which is why it takes a period of time for applications to work in Wine.

Wine is not emulating Windows, but rather is the (or wrapper for ) win32 API for non-windows OS.

For practical purposes Wine is an emulator, or at least it does what most people would expect an emulator to do, even if technically it isn’t just an emulator. See the FAQ for a good explanation. This also follows great traditions in Unix naming, cf. GNU’s Not Unix.

I just upgraded my ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04 and I’m not able to install 32 bit version of wine. I did the followings:
$ sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
$ wget -qO- https://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/winehq.key | sudo apt-key add -
$ sudo apt-add-repository 'deb http://dl.winehq.org/wine-builds/ubuntu/ bionic main'
$ sudo apt update
$ sudo apt install wine32
