Aero Glass is a free program that, well you guessed it, restores the popular»Aero Glass-effect» in Windows 8 and Windows 10. The program uses Windows’ built-in Desktop Window Manager to produce the effect.

So, let’s see how it works. There are two options that are available during the installation:Â Windows 10 Acrylic Design and Windows 8 RP Aero Glass Design. You can also enable the «Protect Aero Glass by adjusting access permissions» option.

Once you have installed the program, you will see that application title bars will become semi-transparent with the frosted glass effect. In case they don’t, open the Task Manager, right-click on Explorer and select restart. You may want to restart some programs if they don’t have the Aero Glass effect. Here’s what the window looks like normally.

And here’s the one with the effect enabled.

Note: The program displayed a pop-up message which says that this is the free version of Aero Glass, and also shows a machine code. I didn’t find any use for this, but I’m guessing it may be required as part of the activation process for the donation license. The program seems to place a watermark on the wallpaper. Apparently, that’s what the donation removes.

Getting it to work

As a workaround, you’ll need to get the symbols yourself. You can do so from Microsoft’s website. The files you’ll need are for the dwmcore.dll and udwm.dll. Or you could do what I did, and use the open source PDB Downloader program. Props to SuperUser forums for the perfect solution.

Use the Downloader to navigate to the Windows System32 folder to select the DLLs. Don’t worry, your system files aren’t going to be affected in any way. They are just used for reference to get the PDB files that are required for Aero Glass to work with the DwmEnableBlurBehindWindow function.

After you have obtained the 2 files, go to the Aero Glass folder (by default, it’s at C:AeroGlass). Create a folder called Symbols and place the 2 PDB’s inside it. So, they should be at C:AeroGlassSymbols. That’s it. The error should no longer appear, and your windows should appear with a frosted glass effect.

Customization

You can customize the way the aero-effect looks like (blur, color), but for this you’ll need to do edit the Windows Registry. This isn’t recommended for normal users; advanced users on the other hand can refer to the official guide for more information.

As for how Aero Glass works, it works fine in most programs (Explorer, MPV, Notepad, Firefox, Skype, Irfan View, etc, but doesn’t have any effect in other programs like Firefox, Word, Telegram, Steam to name a few. It’s likely because the applications use their own UI elements and not the standard Windows title bar’s.

I remember when I first tried Vista, it was in 2008. Our workstations were being upgraded to the latest operating system, and we were being trained about the improvements it brought over Windows XP. Windows 7 hadn’t been launched yet, those were some crazy days. One of the features that I immediately liked in it was the Aero Glass effect of the Start Menu. It’s a shame Microsoft removed that from Windows 10. Well, we got that now.

If you’re interested in customizing Windows, I’d recommend trying FalconX to center the taskbar icons.

Too bad the developer holds certain files hostage just to ask for a donation. I gladly give money for projects that are well done and supported. But I would first like to use it for awhile before making up my mind.

My biggest problem with Winblows 10’s UI is the window border. They have a 4px radius but only 1px is visible. Some actions take into consideration those 3 extra pixels, while some don’t. For this I have to rely on the ugly AeroLite built-in theme. It will be a while until I worry about fancy effects such as transparency, first fix this usability mess.

With full respect to the developer for trying to fix what Microsoft should never have broken, this seems like a somewhat kludgey scenario. Hopefully it can be refined to be less clunky in future releases.

What I would like to see, is a way to use Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 without skinning. I do prefer the Windows Classic style look and usability.

You can @Q: Go to MSFN, and you can use Windows 8.1 with the classic “Windows 2000” style UI. No Visual styles. It turns off DWM.

One of the main good arguments against adoption of Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, was the forced theming that was inferior to the Windows Classic look and functionality. The second main reason came later, when Telemetry was provided via updates for Windows 7+. The third reason is the artificial system requirement for SSE2 instructions (a third-party patch is available to install the operating system without the requirement). For these reasons, my choice of WinNT6+ operating system to use when I had to use one has often been in the Windows Vista family.

Actually the Aero Glass effects (blur+transparency) looks best on Windows 7 with it’s rounded edge and thick borders. It’s the best version of Windows MS ever released (I’ve used Windows 10 for 3 years before switching back to 7).
Will switch to Ubuntu or one of it’s flavours after the support shutdown.

This piece of software has a solid history, and is very good. It is lightweight, especially if your system isn’t from the stone age. I highly recommend making a small donation for the key, as it will download the symbols for you automatically.

The developer has reliably churned out the releases throughout the years. Not sure why ghacks linked to softonic. The developers site glass8-eu (also linked) is the best source.

Lastly, there is a GUI app on the Download page of the developer site that will let you modify depth of blur and such, so you don’t have to mess with the registry.

FYI: softonic owns ghacks.

Dwm.exe Error Message At Startup Everytime and Classic Shell Configure?

I had this laptop for many years. About a few years ago, everytime I start up my laptop, i get a message that says

it has the classic shell needs to configure itself for the new OS. So i always just close this message, then the aero glass thing everytime. I believe this was when i did the upgrade from win7 to windows ten when we had the free upgrade a while back.

Now for over 3+ years, I did nothing to this. What I did was after the 2nd message shows up, i close it and it gives you this message and then i close it. Then i close the Dwm.exe and then go and do my thing on my computer.

A few weeks ago, while im playing online poker, multiple times my poker programs crashed and my 2 monitors basically turn off for a short bit. before turning back on and i get that dwm.exe aero glass for win 8.1+ incompatible issue.

I also have tons of speaker studdering as well. But not only that, my cpu usage is extremely high lately.

Now my question is. is the reason I didn’t do anything with the Dwm.exe message the reason for all of this? Just googled dwm.exe and i read about is it uses a lot of cpu. The moment i open chrome. yes i have about 10 tabs plus at least saved and opened each time, cpu always spikes to 100% in the beginning. Is this normal?

So how do i fix the dwm.exe issue and also the classic shell thing? I mean if i don’t want classic shell, i can just remove it? But the dwm.exe and program crashing is the big issue here. Im guessing this has to been recent windows updates i had to do?

If you open up Apps & Features, does it show a program called Classic Shell that you can remove? If you just click on it, it will give you the option to uninstall it. I do not install stuff like that precisely for this reason.

I would also look for something called Aero Glass here and uninstall it.

If there is nothing called Aero Glass, then right-click the desktop, select Personalize, go to Colors, and turn Transparency Effects off for now and see if the Aero Glass message goes away.

I prefer to get rid of all 3rd-party customization software, but the choice is yours.

Yes there is program called classic shell in apps and features. So do i uninstall it or not? Im pretty certain i installed this program myself years ago though. Buf if i uninstall it, then it won’t have the classic shell and look like how windows ten bar looks?

I look at the date of installs for both programs and these were a few days after i got this laptop i believe. But do i want this removed though? I think it might be related to how i want it to look or for poker. though i think its related to how i want it to look.

I would start by updating Aero Glass from the link I posted above. Then restart the computer and see if it stabilizes out.

If you open task manager and start playing poker, take note of what processes are taking up the most CPU percentage. If it is something like svchost, expand out that particular svchost section to see which exact application is using svchost.

That is the official site for the Aero Glass product. You do want the Windows 10 version.

Just to give you some background, dwm.exe is Desktop Window Manager, so I have strong reason to think that either the Aero Glass or Classic Shell is causing our problem. Hopefully the updated versions will help us out.

While we are waiting for the others, let me go into further detail on my rationale, and how I would approach the problem.

I would mark that down as an obvious problem that needs correcting.

The Aero theme was first introduced in Windows Vista, and it adds visual transparency to various elements of the desktop and other areas of Windows.

Generically, it is often referred to as «Aero glass.» So, we have to make a distinction between the generic use of the term «Aero glass» and this specific piece of software that you have installed (also called «Aero Glass») which enhances Aero and enables Aero to be used after its discontinuation.

More recently, Microsoft has abandoned Aero themes.

So far, we know that this Aero Glass program is generating an error.

We know from the error message that the Aero Glass program is tied to «dwm.exe»

And we know from research that if there is a problem with dwm.exe, that this can also cause Windows to crash. It is an indispensable part of Windows.

You have already mentioned that the software was installed on an earlier version of Windows.

We find legitimate links for the companies that have made this software, so that we can reinstall them later if needed.

If the crashes go away, then we can test with updated versions of the software, and see if the crashes come back.

If the crashes come back, even with updated versions of the software, then my professional opinion would be not to use that software anymore and remove it permanently.

Now, I always have a backup plan. Let’s say we remove both pieces of software and poker still crashes. Then we can look at other culprits.

You have already mentioned that the software was installed on an earlier version of Windows.

We find legitimate links for the companies that have made this software, so that we can reinstall them later if needed.

If the crashes go away, then we can test with updated versions of the software, and see if the crashes come back.

If the crashes come back, even with updated versions of the software, then my professional opinion would be not to use that software anymore and remove it permanently.

Now, I always have a backup plan. Let’s say we remove both pieces of software and poker still crashes. Then we can look at other culprits.

My professional opinion is to uninstall Aero Glass and Classic Shell completely first.

Okay so aeros seem to be the issue tied with dwm then obviously. Now i posted on poker forum, and someone said aeros might be needed for certain programs though. Also, do you know if i must have installed aeros myself when i got the computer? Or i just turned it on? Because i know for sure i downloaded classic shell from a website years ago. I look at the dates of the installations and both were a few days after i got this laptop years ago. So that mean i must have downloaded aero glass myself?

I use aero because when i didn’t have it on. i remember the poker tables when moving it. didn’t look the way i want it to. Like the glasslike make it look better with the windows. Does that make sense? It was how it was like with windows 7 so that is why i want it that way. But i could still install both these programs again if i uninstall them right? What is strange is why does the other poster say classic shell is discontinued? The thing is i dont mind getting that classic shell error message when i turn on laptop everyday. because well i want the start menu to look like windows 7. But you say just give it up and just go with what others use now with win ten right? I remembered. i didn’t like the start menu at all which is why i downloaded classic shell years ago.

But the aeros glass. i have three options right? Either remove it and see how its like. or just install from glass8.eu? Or just remove it and then install glass8.eu?

I just meant that Classic Shell and Aero Glass are still available, and the available versions are likely newer than what you had installed originally. It is true that Classic Shell has been discontinued.

I would uninstall both. Hopefully it will solve your problem.

If you cant stand the way it looks later on, you can just reinstall them and see if the problem comes back.

AERO Glass (прозрачность) для Windows 8.1 и Windows 10

Нам на компьютер скачивается установщик, запускаем его.

Принимаем лицензионное соглашение и устанавливаем программу

После установки программы Вы не узнаете своей Windows 8.1, Windows 10. Как видим Aero Glass (прозрачность) присутствует во всей красе.

Для 100% эффекта настроим один параметр. Щёлкнем правой мышью на рабочем столе и выберем «Персонализация».

Щёлкните правой мышью на кнопке «Цвет»

Выберите цвет окон и панели задач, также выберите степень прозрачности окон, она настраивается в пункте Интенсивность цвета.

Я хочу иметь тему aero на моем Windows 10, но это происходит.

Ok, вы не используете Glass8 с пожертвованием.ключ, поэтому инструмент не загружает автоматически отладочные символы (PDB) для всех библиотек DLL, связанных с DWM, если сам инструмент не имеет жестко закодированного патча для определенной версии DLL.

интерфейс Aero Glass для Win8.х+ работы инъекции повторно реализованы код в несколько функций DWM. Это может быть достигается только тогда, когда известно абсолютное расположение каждой функции. Эти расположения описаны в специальных файлах, называемых «программа база данных » и вы можете узнать их по их .Расширение PDB. Они содержат набор всех открытых DWM переменных и функций (которые вызываемые символы) вместе с их смещениями памяти (относительными мест) и другой информации. Интерфейс Aero Glass для Win8.x + способен загрузите эти файлы из каталога » symbols хранить в Аэро стекло каталог установки, найти соответствующий символ и вычислить абсолютный ячейка памяти.

Скачиваю последнюю вресию Aero Glass для 8.1 с официального сайта, по инструкции устаналиваю, а оно в итоге выдает ошибку:

«Your DWM is incompatible with Aero Glass! Do you want to retry symbols downloading?».

Но без этого Aero, тема Vista получается непрозрачная и с острыми углами, выглядит глючно, т. к. требует наличие установленного Aero Glass.
У меня на ноуте к сожалению, Vista не идет, только 8.1, лицензионная.

Windows 7 не включает сам эффект Aero Glass. Кроме того, вам необходимо проверить, поддерживает ли ваша версия Windows 7 Aero функцию или нет. Если вы обнаружите, что ваша функция Aero не включена или не работает в Windows 10/8/7, попробуйте выполнить следующие действия по устранению неполадок.

Aero не работает в Windows 10

1] Убедитесь, что ваша версия Windows 10/8/7 поддерживает Aero. Aero поддерживается в версиях Ultimate, Home Premium, Business.

2] Убедитесь, что ваша графическая карта поддерживает WDDM (модель драйвера дисплея Windows)
