How to get desktop icons in Windows 2008 R2.
Server Manager

Hello,
- Are you able to explore folders (check it by pressing window button+E)
- We can suspect that your server attacked by virus. So scan it once
- Check for the Grope policies anything applied to your server or not?
- Final try Login in safe mode with network and check for the difference

Check your eventlog to see if you have profile loading issue. You might fallback to the default’s profile of that server, and it use a temporary profile. Thus you loose all icon you have in your profile, and when you update your server you reload it usually,
thus your profile might come available again. If it’s the error, check the AV and such that might lock your profile.

I agree its probably a profile issue or the shell explorer.exe is crashing for some reason.

I have a Windows Server 2008r2 install. I have enabled the Desktop Experience Feature. Any applications that I install do not place icons on the desktop or start menu. If I create items in the pPublic/Desktop folder ot the programDatastart Menu folder they
are not copied to any desktops. this is a bare install with no GPO’s set. This is driving me mad!!! thanks in advance
